A Life Well Lived

With Reagan and Solzhenitsyn, John Paul II represents the three forces of opposition to communism that shattered the evil empire, the Soviet Union –the American-led West, the Eastern European resistance, and the Russian dissident movement. They also represented the three spheres of opposition: political, artistic and spiritual. Each man came into the field of his greatness later in life, and each has endured hard circumstances in their later years. I hope Solzhenitisyn is able to and inclined to write about his colleagues in the struggle that triumphed.Hugh Hewitt

April 2, 2005: I’ve moved this earlier post to the top for the remainder of today, in memory of John Paul II and his service to humanity.

  1. The names Andrei Sakharov, Natan Sharansky and Lech Walesa should be mentioned too.

  2. According to a friend of mine who watches cnn (I don’t) they announced the Pope dead early this morning. They later retracted it (unlike cbs and Schiavo, where they just pulled the story). Amazing how eager they are to report deaths.

  3. Jay, Fox News in fact reported yesterday that the Pope had died. (Apr 1) based on an Italian report. I think they got it right on the third try.

  4. The MSM is trying to give the Pope sole credit for the demise of communism, when he was very close to the “Better Red Than Dead” school of thought. Had this Pope prevailed, Saddam would still be in power. Had the Catholic Bishops prevailed, all our convicted killers would be back in the street. RIP, Pope, but I pray for a new Pope who knows from upright.

  5. Please consider the Pope’s encyclical “Centesimus Annus” and then explain how he was philosophically close to the reds (not possible to do).
If you are going to pray for a Pope who is not so dedicated to peace, try also praying for an American government which does not bankroll madmen like Saddam Hussein.
