3. I never read about smoke up the anus actually being used until this year, (though I’m aware of the expression). I did read accounts of people being resuscitated with tobacco smoke blown into a bellows by the rescuer, then blown into the mouth.

   The early 19th century was home to a lot of quackery, especially among the barbers and surgeons who preyed on the poor, but this doesn’t have the ring of truth.

   1. I would argue that the 21st century is also home to as much quackery, and in the same was 150 years ago, people see it as normal or even cutting edge.

14. I am afraid Nicotine ‘In the Out door’ Was a Thing a couple hundred years ago.
    I was a lecturer on 18th & 19th century medicine for the US NPS even before I became a Critical Care RN.
    In their defense, it was the best “science” they had and in 200 more years, (assuming we get back to real science as opposed to ‘social science’), we will look most barbaric. Also, to be fair, about 20 years ago we returned to the practice of using Leeches on my ICU.
