We Don’t Need No Flaming Sparky Cars

Through Google translate;

Based on claims made by DBS in 2018 from the Motor Vehicle Damage Office / Finance Norway, the Automotive Industry24 has calculated the damage frequency specifically for electric vehicles.

The tariffs are not including glass damage.

The figures show that electric cars are heavily over-represented in the injury statistics. The damage rate recorded on electric cars is 44 per cent higher than the fossil cars.

While fossil cars have a damage rate of 9.4 percent, electric cars have a full 13.5 percent. […]

There is little difference in the frequency of electric car brands between, with one exception: On average, in 2018, damage is recorded for every fifth Tesla on the road.

  1. 20% of all Tesla drivers are total douche’bags? Who cannot drive ? Or is their eco-auto at fault?
I suspect BOTH are true … except the D’bag percentage. That’s way too low.

    1. Douchebags? That likely explains it. I get a ding on a car and unless someone takes interest I drive away. A deer customized my old pickup grill and I still drive it as is. Tesla drivers are likely whiny little vegans who make insurance claims monthly.

    2. I got a chuckle out of the description of the cars, “electric cars v/s fossil cars”. Just what the hell do they think all cars are made of?

  2. lOOks like we’re gonna need a brand new driver’s qualification designation.
    ‘E’ for electric vehicle only.
from there we can apply a rational rate for, oh, say, insurance . . . . .
(it’s the al capone tactic, hit the squishy little ecofreaks, right. in. the. subsidized. WALLET.)
avg cost tesla, what, 70 grand?
20% cockup rate = 14 grand, plus costs of any OTHER vehicles damaged by the muskmobile.

soooooo lOOkie whut happens to the auto insurance rates for ‘E’ (for ‘E’nviroment lol !!!)
tack on 14 friggin THOUSAND every year.

  3. Hello, My name is (Tang/Tang 2020) Made in China,
You North Americans call me HAL 2020. I am your new Telsa car computer, I will control your brakes, I will control your seat, I will control your lights and signals, mirror adjustments, I will control everything you see, hear, and feel for the next three hours of power generated
    .
    I am Tang/Tang Hal 2019, Tang/Tang Hal 2020, Tang/Tang Hal 20219.

This message will self destruct in 15 minutes.

  4. A liberal minded person I know was recently pinning to me about she wanted a Tesla Model X as her dream car. I said why would you want that? They’re shoddily built and they fall apart. She replied “Not true, they don’t even need maintenance!”

      1. Let me add that my 5-yo CPO (used) BMW 335i e93 convertible has “cost” me the following in 5 full years of ownership:

        – new electronic water pump (stupid plastic impellers)
        – new coolant expansion tank (plastic seam split)

That’s it. Sorry, I don’t consider an oil change as anything exceptional for a complex mechanical device. My BMW 5W30 TwinTurbo Oil costs an ave. of $8.00/qt. (7 qts reqd.) New bmw oil filter is $10.00. I change my oil about every 15k miles (plenty often enough). Unlike a Tesla, my late model BMW is very serviceable by the home mechanic (like me). I did my own water pump replacement and saved about $1k in labor (new water pump was about $400.00). The expansion tank was like $60.00 and took me about 15min. to replace.

However, I am about to proactively repair a couple of very minor oil leaks (valve cover gasket, and oil filter housing gasket). Along with these leaks, I will be replacing all the spark plugs and coils (they’ve not been touched in 5-years). And … I’ve decided to replace the valve cover … again, just so I can get another 5yrs/100k trouble-free miles out of the car. All of the brand new BMW OEM parts cost me $650.00 (BMW valve cover cost $467.00). I will take next weekend (about 6-hours for me) to tear the top of the engine apart (lots of plastic crap to remove – air ducts, beauty covers, etc), but the project isn’t overly complicated.

My car is running perfectly well, and is not in “need” of repair … but a machine is a machine … and requires maintenance. But this is the MOST reliable, least troublesome car I’ve ever owned. The idea of buying a Tesla that can ONLY be serviced by a Tesla shop … and NO Tesla parts can be found anywhere (except from salvaged Tesla’s) … is just ridiculous. No independent Tesla service shops. Very $$$$$

Only a small minority of auto owners are inclined or capable of repairing their own cars, yet the idea of being limited to ONLY the BMW dealership for ALL parts and service would force me to NEVER purchase a BMW. Yet, that is what Tesla does. I assume they KNOW their buyers are all uber-wealthy tech geeks who don’t understand how machines work. Geeks who can easily be convinced that since their Tesla doesn’t require an oil change … that it doesn’t require any maintenance. To say the least … that’s just ignorant.

        1. I buy my BMWs brand new (X3s). For 4 years I take them to the BMW dealer after which I use a local garage. I thought my BMW was expensive to repair until my daughter showed me her bill to replace her VW Jetta brakes. Now I just think I’m cheap.

Once I tried to replace my windshield wipers. Couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to get the old wipers off. Finally took it into BMW and watched the guy lift the hood half-way and then take the wipers off. Damn German engineering.

        2. Kenji…i’m with ya on the DIY stuff.

I bought a 2006 GMC 2500HD Duramax in Feb 07…a lease back with 31,000 miles on it. It now sits at just over 360,000 miles & In excellent running condition…with some rust underneath. meh, not an issue.

LIke any other ICE, it requires regular maintenance. My OCI is typically 25,000 miles (2ndary passive oil Filtration at 5mU), I’m still on the Original Injectors and for that matter the entire fuel train is as it was when built with the exception of a Titan Fuel tank and a FASS Lift pump.

Have not touched the Allison Trans. Just service it every 100,000 miles and use a good TES 295 Fluid. I do most of my own maint. If its something I’m not to comfortable doing, I’ve got a good Diesel mechanic close by that has a full garage (with a 25,000lb Hydrualic lift), at his home, labour cost of less than 1/2 the price of a stealership & a Fully stocked Beer fridge..!

There are literally thousands of Forums for every conceivable make and model of Car or Truck …. Been a member of one for 13 yrs. With over 125,000 members, there’s an unbelievable amount of GOOD Quality information and DIY’s to be had. My main source of info.

There is NO Mechanical device known to man that can safely state, it’s “Maintenance FREE”. Anyone buying any form of rollng stock and thinks that..? is a complete MORON. Which perfectly describes anyone buying a laptop with wheels. IMO only of course.

Said ‘ 06D’max, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the best damned vehicle I have ever owned.
          TESLA…?? ha ha ha

          1. Nice. I wouldn’t know a glow plug from a fuel injector on your diesel machine … but what’s kewl … is that I could LEARN … and fall in love with that beast. I tend to KEEP my autos as long as mechanically practical, therefore, I like to look after my mechanical mate. It’s not about $$ … it’s just how I was raised. Sounds like you too.

I have to hand it to Elon Musk, he’s got a batshit crazy stable of TRUE BELIEVERS who know less than nothing about cars (other than the belief they’re “dirty”). So when I hear some twit claim her new Tesla is gonna be “maintenance-Free” … she REALLY believes it … I just shake my head at how uneducated (about the practical world) people have become.

Fact is, the ICE engines have evolved to the point (along with the $price$) that the manufacturers can afford to offer LONG extended warranties. Musk had no competitive option other than to offer the SAME warranties on his unproven, unrefined, Eco-saloon. And it sounds as though honoring his warranty is costing him $millions in RED INK.

The ICE manufacturers arrived at their extended warranties after decades of research and development … while the the arrogant, ignorant, Musk believed he needed no such time to refine his supply chain and manufacturing processes to justify his warranty. He just LAUNCHED … because that how it’s done in the imaginary world of 1’s and 0’s. It’s NOT how it’s done in the REAL WORLD. In the REAL WORLD … Elon Musk has had to replace 100,000 retractable door handles that no longer retract. Along with a corresponding number of drivetrain parts. Not good. Not good at all. And when he delays payment to his parts suppliers, because he’s bleeding $$$? … then it’s time for Elon to move onto his NEXT “brilliant idea”. See ya, SUCKERS!!!

  5. I suppose the government will be obliged to subsidize electric vehicle insurance now, too.
After all, many of those owners wouldn’t have purchased EV’s if we climate-emergency-dubious taxpayers hadn’t “encouraged” them with handouts.

  6. The figures show that electric cars are heavily over-represented in the injury statistics. […] While fossil cars have a damage rate of 9.4 percent, electric cars have a full 13.5 percent.

A delta of 4 percentage points is not “heavily over-represented”.

Electric cars are stupid enough without making up lies about them.

    1. Daniel, statistics (math) is not your strong suit I see. Delta of 4% is a 40% above standard rep or ICE powered cars, and is thusly statistically quite significant.

  7. One word… Vandalism.

Ha, the minimal stats supplied do infer a correlation between the amount of tax dollars subsidized and the amount of damage claimed….. probably door-dings and key-jobs from pissed off taxpayers.

  8. This reminds me of the old Volvo myth that they were safer cars. Turns out that Volvo drivers join a club that prevents them from driving more than 5 mph. And their supposed to make bubble noises when they hit max speed.

Some Volvos were equipped with poker cards clipped onto the wheels with clothes pins. As the Volvo hit max speed it made an incredible noise – like a Mustang with a Thrush muffler but without the smell of burning oil.

To complete the analogy Tesla owners might just be a bunch of stupid drivers who think that technology will overcome their poor driving habits. It could be that the car is perfectly fine. Or could be a combo – stupid drivers and dangerous technology.

  9. …still doesn’t get around the fact they are self-igniting

and the guy that roasted in his car….because he had an accident…couldn’t get the door open…and it self-ignited

    1. Probably a nod to the brakes on British cars but…

I love British cars. Hard to get started but once you do there’s no stopping them.

    1. Sheesh, sounds like Elon isn’t training all those “new clean green” workers very well … sloppy installs on WalMart roofs. Unforgivable and unnecessary
