The story is from 2017, but the fact that so-called conservative legislators aren’t getting out in front of this creeping insanity with protective legislation for agriculture and related industries is a study in incompetence. They’ve learned nothing from the attacks on the fossil fuel industry, and they’re sitting on their hands as agriculture is being taken apart piece by piece.
Call your MLA and tell them to get moving on right to farm and anti-animal rights legislation.
The vegans are upset that the calves are taken away from their mothers shortly after birth [and slaughtered]. I have no idea whether this is true or not but if it is, where on earth do dairy cows come from?
The male calves are slaughtered after they have been fattened up to make veal because they are otherwise useless to a dairy farmer.
I figured that. I also figured that not all the female calves would be slaughtered because that would not bode well for the dairy industry. I guess my question would be do they fatten many of the female calves for veal as well – equal opportunity and all that.
In a country like Canada with a “supply managed” dairy industry they probably do. A farmer can’t just go and increase the size of his herd unless he has millions of dollars to spend on quota, so I imagine there are excess females that go the veal route as well. As an added bonus, the milk that would get dumped in ditches because it is “excess” can be used to fatten them up.
So, I am not absolutely sure, but I believe that all heifer calves would be kept to either replace the herd, sell to other farmers, or especially sell to US farmers. In the US, dairy farmers can use bST hormone in their cows to essentially make them produce milk forever, more or less. This means they depend on other cows to produce the heifer calves they need to keep production going, since the cows receiving the hormones are not going to be producing calves.
I believe one thing Canada did right (under Harper I think) was ban the use of this hormone in Canada in dairy cattle. My opinion.
Not true. Only a tiny percent of male calves are raised as veal. Where do you think beef comes from? Neutered male calves that are raised to 800 – 1,110 pounds body weight.
Are you sure that’s true? I understand that the vast majority of the dairy herd in Canada are Holstein cows. Holsteins aren’t typically used for meat are they? Aren’t beef cattle typically Herefords or Angus or such types of breeds?
A good percentage of males are raised for veal and another portion are grown out for beef, not as good as beef breeds for the finer cuts but just fine for ground beef and processed meats (A&W hormone free?).
A lot of hiefers are keep for replacement cows (here or sold into US as noted above) but some end up with the males for different reasons. The worn out cows are processed for ground beef and processed meats or pet food.
All of the calves (male and female) are removed from the cow either immediately after birth or a few days after and are bottle, pail fed milk. The cow is producing way more milk than the calf needs and the dairy farmer wants to sell that production to you.

Dairy cows are necessarily bred so that they continue to lactate. A cows milk production drops off and she will eventually ‘dry up’ if she doesn’t produce a calf. That is why she is bred. It has nothing to do with sentient beings or ethics. It’s biology – nothing more.

I ONLY consume dairy products from cows that have been milked under strict supervision of the LeLeche League. Only THOSE cows that have been advised of their milking rights, and handled with the utmost of consultant care. According to what I’ve read ALL cows end up dead and either on your table or in your dogs bowl. Dairy cows aren’t very tasty compared to beef cattle, partly because of age at which they are slaughtered (about 5 yrs). So think of your favorite mass-produced hamburg joint. That might be a dairy cattle burger.

No, the only exception being the health of the mother. Possibly rape but I’m not sure about that exception.
I only know of one worldview where humans are understood as separate from animals. This being the case, in this worldview humans are responsible to care for animals and not cause undue harm, but neither are they on the same ethical plane. That is, animals do not have rights (and there are no charters or constitutions in any functioning governments who assert animal rights), but humans do, and these rights always have priority over animal rights.
Other worldviews confuse human and animal, and this is why we’re in this conversation. It is also why the future does not look so bright, as it is a worldview in ascendancy.
