    “Slowing economy, real estate risk, and continued budget deficits among factors for downgrade.

    Reuters is reporting that Dagong Global Credit Rating Co – one of China’s largest credit rating agencies – has downgraded Canada’s sovereign credit outlook to negative.

    According to the report, Dagong made the decision “citing a slowdown in the Canadian economy and relatively high risks in its real estate market.”

    Additionally, “A persistently high fiscal deficit was also one of the reasons for the downgrade.””

    2. It’s common business practice to push down the value of an asset you wish to acquire by any means possible. There are lots of Western Canadian assets China would love to buy at cents-on-the-dollar. It’s only a matter of time before Turdeau sees a sale of Western Canadian assets as “a way out.”

    The appropriate analogy is to a massive publicly-traded business corporation, wherein the management is fighting with its officially-appointed external auditors, the latter of whom have taken the position that there are material misstatements of financial position in the, you know, financial statements, and projections thereof for future years, upon which information investors (both equity and debt) will make decisions about the enterprise.

    In the normal course of media coverage, given the size of the enterprise involved, there would be front-page/headline news in/on the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, the National/Financial Post, CBC, CTV, BNN, blah, blah, blah… And, in said circumstances, of course, the character, motives, and, indeed, “alleged” criminality (by which I mean, already charged, tried and convicted in the court of public opinion) of the management team would be luridly described, whether or not those descriptions include unsubstantiated innuendo and rumour. Chief among the assertions, of course, would be the contention that the greedy and self-serving capitalists involved were caught, red-handed, stealing from many unsuspecting small investors, including untold numbers of defenceless widows, etc., etc. There would ensue calls for immediate police and securities regulatory investigations.

    And, I might add, this depiction (forget the analogy) would also be entirely accurate if the “culprit(s)” involved were anybody other than the leadership element of the Ontario Liberal Party.

    Alas, not so, in this case, except for a few columns by Toronto Sun journalists.

    Regardless, there are a couple of other points that need to be made (the misstatement of deficit numbers is only the “half” of it, and almost misses the point):

    – As I understand it, the rate buy-down costs of the so-called “Fair Hydro Plan” are being loaded into revenue deferral accounts of the major electric utilities — Ontario Power Generation Inc. and Hydro One Networks Inc. — for eventual dispensation by rate order of the Ontario Energy Board. In the absence of legislative prohibition, the dispensation of so-called “regulatory assets” has to start almost immediately, which would mean, of course, that the so-called “rate relief” Ontarians are receiving would have to start to be recovered, with interest, very shortly, and not on the multi-year (or -decade) basis Ms. Wynne has indicated.

    – In addition, why, exactly, would the Wynne government be claiming the value in the public sector pension plans (which are so-far performing pretty well on their own) as deferred revenue of the provincial government, unless there were a hidden plan to change the law so as to allow it to be used as revenue for a purpose for which it was not intended?

    Let all of that sink in: surely Ms. Wynne, as business unsavy as she is, cannot believe that all of us are that financially brain-dead.

    I would add, finally, that the public sector unions in Ontario have much to account for, given their duplicitous and treacherous performance last time round. Hopefully, for their own sake, there will not be an encore performance.

    I encourage people to vote accordingly, and to send a message that won’t be forgotten.

      The Divine Right of Kings is what comes to mind, here, and the assumption that taxpayer money shouldn’t be treated the same as a profit-centred, regulated enterprise in which people invest their own money willingly (and knowing the risks). What’s always baffled me is how readily people accept it. How did I get such a different message during my formative years than did my peers to be able to see the lack of imperial clothing?
