Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Don’t know if you care, but there is confirmation today that you are doing a good job Kate. Kinsella has posted his top ten bloggers, and he has not included what might be the top Canadian blog out there, or at least very high ranking: SDA. Looking over his list, it appears to be purely partisan, although not devoid of good picks. Calgary Grit does run a good blog from what I have seen.
He also wails, moans, and gnashes the teeth about the lack of smart female Canadian bloggers. It is pretty obvious he was trying very hard not to look, at a number of blogs.

Resolved: that female Canadian conservative bloggers are generally better than their male counterparts.
We are more outspoken, less timid, less likely to buy into received wisdom. Too many of the guys seem to be angling for government/party jobs, so they don’t come out and saying much that’s really challenging or controversial.
Fewer of the male bloggers are true conservatives; they are better described as low-tax, pro-war libertarians.

a salute to an aviation pioneer:
just watched my copy of ‘the aviator’ fictionalized story of Howard Hughes.
5 oscars too, he would be pleased at that.
the real story was much more entertaining.
Hughes was indisputably an engineering genius, providing aviation with things like flush rivets which added significantly to speed and fuel economy and indispensible with current aircraft.
and he set records for distance, around the world in 4 days in mid 30s.
his ideas and designs advanced aviation considerably to the benefit of all involved.
I have *another* dvd with the footage of him in front of the senate hearing ripping into brewster who even looked the part of a slimy corrupt politishun.
if Howard had not suffered terribly from ocd we may have gotten into space 5 or 6 years earlier.
God bless you Howard, you are at peace and thank you for your emphasis on safe flying even if you didnt provide that for yourself all the time.

New Iraq Report Makes Case for Victory
A new report on Iraq was released today that covers many subjects not touched on by the Iraq Study Group. Titled Citizens Report on Iraq: Attainable Victory vs. the Propaganda of Defeat, the report was conceived, researched and authored by independent citizens with experience in Iraq who are concerned that the American people and politicians are ill-informed about the situation in Iraq. The 86-page report is available for download at the Free Republic website: http://www.freerepublic.com Citizens Report on Iraq. In the Citizens Report on Iraq, readers will learn that progress is being made in Iraq; there are large areas of…-
On ctv news last night, the reporter actually said, it is about time for someone to tell cdns what following Kyoto will cost each and everyone of us. That should be Harpers tactic. Cattle producers and packing plants are worried about the price of corn. Turning food into fuel is a stupid idea. The law of unintended consequences will cause those wackos lots of problems, and yes, even if they don’t like to admit it, everyone will be hurt, not just the conservative supporters. The Green Party, NDP and their gods suzuki and gore will eventually be vilified for their headlong dash into disaster, just to get votes. And, those voters will be starving in the dark.
“Politically Correct history is nonsense, as ordinary people have known for a long time.”
Ordinary people: conservatives know this. Furthermore, prejudice is a normal, human trait. Read Edmund Burke* …-
The Noble Savage is French Toast
Nicholas Wade is a science writer for the New York Times, who used to be as Politically Correct as anyone in that mob on 42nd Street. No longer. Wade has discovered the new anthropology, now informed by a radically improved understanding of the human genome. The new evidence is clearly explained in his recent book, Before the Dawn: Recovering the lost history of our ancestors.
It looks at the deep human past — tens to hundreds of thousands of years — combining written records, archeology, anthropology and the human genome. The result is spectacular. If this book is any indication, Politically Correct history is a goner. Rousseau’s Noble Savage is French toast.
Wade presents compelling evidence that humans appear to be genetically predisposed to warfare. Among ancient hunter-gatherers, “incessant warfare” was the norm, just as it is today among the Stone Age tribes of New Guinea and South America. Humans have a long history of cannibalism, so much that we carry genes to guard against the toxic consequences of eating human flesh (similar to Mad Cow prion disease). Modern humans are less aggressive than our ancestors were. The very fact that we can live in mass societies at reasonable peace with each other is an extraordinary advance.
Anthropologists have long tried to close their minds to the plentiful evidence for murderous tribal warfare. When they encountered tribal wars, they pointed out that not many people seemed to get killed in any fight — forgetting that raiding one’s neighbors is often a weekly sporting event, like Monday Night Football. So war death rates go to thirty percent over a lifetime, not counting injuries, rapes and ethnic cleansings. And it turns out that even the “peaceful” peoples, like Bushmen, boast of their human kills. They justify killing by explaining that they just get really mad.
Anthropologists have become famous by writing that cannibalism was just a slanderous lie invented by the West. It all fit the neo-racist myth of the White Man’s Guilt — as at Duke University. Such people peddle the myths of the peaceful Hopis and Bushmen, the Gandhi-esque Hindus, Buddhists and Sufis, and all the morally superior non-White cultures. (They somehow forget that Gandhi’s independence movement led straight to four million ethnic killings during the Partition of 1948).
Politically Correct history is nonsense, as ordinary people have known for a long time….-

*Burke:
The nature of prejudice, is a feeling or emotion which transcends reason. Burke claimed: “When our feelings contradict our theories….the feelings are true, and the theory is false”. Feelings are not easy to convey in rational terms. Some of the people who hold prejudices may indeed be ignorant and inarticulate. However the prejudices themselves cannot be ignorant, since they are never the product solely of one mind or time.
The function of prejudice is to act as a survival aid. It rescues us from danger when we do not have time to think from first principles. When humans are confronted by a lion they feel fear. Perhaps they have never met a lion before and its intentions may be entirely benign. But the collective experience of our species is that lions are hostile and so we have a prejudice against them. Burke’s conclusion, therefore, is that prejudices are wise. Men of understanding “instead of exploding general prejudices, employ their sagacity to discover the latent wisdom which prevails in them”.If they find this wisdom,”they think it more wise to continue the prejudice”.

kevin – Kate’s blog was actually voted in as The Best Canadian Blog 2006. So, it’s not ‘probably the best’, but ‘voted as the best’.
Kinsella doesn’t like anyone who disagrees with him and his love for the Liberals and above all, for Chretien.
Yes, I like Weston’s name for Dion: Dr. Did Little.
I think the Liberals are having a hard time trying to ‘imagize’ Dion because the real Dion is a public relations nightmare. He is incomprehensible, he is arrogant, controlling, insulted by every interaction and floundering in generalities and vague ideas.
He can manipulate the backrooms and make private individual deals but he can’t be allowed out in public. In public, his manipulative tactics move out of the hidden realm of private personal favours into full-blown malice.
For example, when he became leader his first statements against Harper were juvenile name-calling (Harper is far-right, he’s controlling, he’s…). That might endear him to a few private Liberal supporters but it doesn’t work well with the great mass of the public.
Then, his attacks against the West (they live well only because their money is ‘easy money’). That might work well in arranging a private economic deal, but it doesn’t work well with the public.
So- I think he’s a public relations disaster for the Liberal BackRoom Boys. That’s why they and their buddies in the MSM have been working like beavers to fictionalize a definition of Dion rather than letting the Real Dion images get into the public eye.
The CPC ‘ads’ focus on the Real Dion.
Kathy, I have noticed that there seems to be a lot of “yes man” type posts on the blogging tories forum, people supporting any and every action of the government. I don’t know if that kind of behavior is restricted to men though.

Forget ‘moderate’ Muslims. Here’s a rational and decent Muslim talking about 24, CAIR and fanaticism:
So if this drama hits too close to home, perhaps offended Muslims should use this TV program as an emotional stimulus for change. To this point, the Muslim community has been able to completely avoid any real debate over Islamism. In fact, we see now a movement in England and the West to blame the West’s foreign policy as a root cause of terror rather than the real root cause — theocratic Islamist ideology.
It’s time for hundreds of thousands of Muslims to be not only private but public in their outrage — and to commit themselves to specific, verbal engagement of the militants and their Islamism. We, as American Muslims, should be training and encouraging our Muslim-community youth to become the future Jack Bauers of America. What better way to dispel stereotypes than to create hundreds of new, real images of Muslims who are publicly leading this war on the battlefield and in the domestic and foreign media against the militant Islamists.
Condemnations by press release and vague fatwas are not enough. We need to create organizations — high-profile, well-funded national organizations and think tanks — which are not afraid to identify al Qaeda, Hamas, and Hezbollah by name, and by their mission as the enemies of America.
If Muslim organizations and the American Muslim leadership were seen publicly as creating a national, generational plan to fight Islamism — rather than searching for reasons to claim victimhood — then the issues and complaints surrounding such TV shows would disappear. The way to fight the realities of 24 is to create a Muslim CTU, a deep Muslim counterterrorism ideology and a national action plan for our security.

Kate…can you ignore the ‘fake and libelous quote’ part? Are they baiting you?
The temptation would be to resist the urge to give them 30 seconds of your time…they are not worth it…but they should be held accountable for that stupid statement.
The Saudis are becoming more compassionate about wife beating, at least in their opinion (from the NY Sun):
Less than two years ago, there was a priceless piece of Islamic jurisprudence that illustrated how disconnected talk of reform is from practice in the Arabian Peninsula under Saudi hegemony. An eminent, and very pro-Saudi, Islamic cleric, Sheik Abdullah Aal Mahmud of Bahrain, enshrined himself with a television broadcast on June 20, 2005, on the Bahraini government-owned network as he asserted that Islam indeed sanctions the beating of wives and instructed his millions of viewers on the “correct” way to do it.
“If the husband wished to use beatings in the treatment of his wife, it is essential, absolutely essential, to never do it in front of the children. The beating must remain between him and her and with the conditions outlined, which are that he does not draw blood nor leave a perceptible bruise on her body and avoid her face as well as dangerous [sic] parts concerning the body. If the husband violates these directives, he then violates the limits set by the almighty. … Because the woman is not to be seen as merchandise to which he can do whatever he pleases.”
Amazingly, the sheik was sincerely trying to show how humane Islam is in its prescriptions on how to treat women.
For the princess’s Western enablers at Davos, the same sick logic applies. To show a symbol of oppression as one of liberation treats twisted views as worthy of respect. It is irresponsible.

Long story short, a fire in a capacitor bank at Richview power station near Highway 401 and Dixon Road caused a voltage drop all across Southern Ontario and into New York State.
Not to be unduly alarmist, but this suggests to me a system being run on the ragged edge of functionality. Clearly they don’t have enough excess capacity to buffer these unplanned equipment problems.
So here we have one of the most important services in the country, one that we all rely upon for our very lives (does YOUR furnace work when the power goes out? Mine doesn’t, and its frickin’ cold out today.) Said service is in big trouble, capacity wise at the very least. What is the big big election issue being noised about this week by all parties?
The Environment!
Given the choice to focus on two problems A) people freezing to death this winter or B)computer model predictions of warmer weather 100+ years from now, the collective political/media apparatus of this country are going for B.
This level of anal/cranial inversion is dangerous to the general welfare of the public, particularly in our overly socialised state.
What’s more interesting and escaped my attention is the fact, that on the decline we are just approaching herd size of 1970 – about 100.000 species – after reaching 180.000 in 1989.

Oh, look – The Toronto Star Op/Ed page is weighing in on the attack ads – A great opportunity for the French Citizen!
“Regardless of what Harper does in the future, though, his image as a leader who doesn’t take environmental issues seriously is seared in the minds of most Canadians, according to recent polls.”
Doesn’t take environmental issues seriously, as opposed to what, doing nothing for 13 years? According to what recent polls? The one that shows the Libs at 16% and the Tories at 14% in effecting environmental change? That one?
“That’s why the TV ads avoid saying anything about what the Tories will do to improve the environment.”
You mean the Tories that have only been in government for one year and whose environmental plan is being forged in a by-partisan committee?
“For Dion, though (there’s that though word again), the ads can serve as a wake-up call, sending a message that he must strive to offer Canadians a solid, credible environmental program that they can understand.
It’s an opportunity that should not be missed.”
Except, but, isn’t Dion the leader of the opposition party? And, “they can understand.” Well, that’s the real problem right there, isn’t it. Hardly an opportunity, rather it’s a downright disaster.
Yet more proof that Liberals are mankinds retarded cousins.
Reorienting toilets to appease Muslim criminals in Britain?
All I can say is “WTF?”
You know, I seriously doubt that they’d do anything like that for Christians or Jews. Oh, no… only the Muslims need to be appeased. To hell with everyone else, right?

They’re also getting ready to reorient banks in order to allow Muslim only 0% interest rates.

“Khomeini slept with 4-year-old girl.”
An excerpt from ‘Hal Ataaka Hadeeth ur-Raafidah?’ by the late Sheikh Abu Mus’abaz-Zarqaawi
“The author of the book ‘For Allah, Then For History’ [1] mentions to us an event that took place before his very eyes, when al-Khomeini [2] was living in Iraq, and was visiting an Iranian individual by the name of Sayyid Sahib.
He says: ‘Sayyid Sahib was joyous with our visit, and we arrived at his house around the time of Dhuhr. So, he prepared for us a lavish dinner, and called some of his relatives, who came to see us, and the house became crowded in celebration of our presence.
Sayyid Sahib then requested that wespend that night at his home, to which the Imam agreed. When it was night time, we were given our supper, and the guests would take the Imam’s hand and kiss it, and they would ask him questions, with him answering their questions.
When it was time to sleep, the guests had all left, except for the inhabitants of the house. Al-Khomeini laid his eyes on a young girl who, despite being only four or five years of age, was very beautiful.
So, the Imam requested from her father, Sayyid Sahib, that he spend the night with her in order to enjoy her. Her father happily agreed, and Imam al-Khomeini spent the night with the girl in his arms, and we could hear her crying and screaming.’”
Footnotes
[1] This book was written under the alias Husayn al-Musawi, a former companion of al-Khomeini who later abandoned his previous beliefs.
[2] Ayatollah al-Khomeini was the leader of the Shee’ah Raafidah of Iran in the 1980s.
Sorry, here’s more:
One may reasonably ask, “But Pastorius, why do you believe this story? After all, it could be a lie, couldn’t it?”
Sure, it could. But, I don’t believe it is, and here’s why:
Let me begin with a quote from a fatwa by the late and unlamented Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran.
“A man can marry a girl younger than nine years of age, even if the girl is still a baby being breastfed. A man, however is prohibited from having intercourse with a girl younger than nine, other sexual acts such as foreplay, rubbing, kissing and sodomy is allowed. A man having intercourse with a girl younger than nine years of age has not committed a crime, but only an infraction, if the girl is not permanently damaged. If the girl, however, is permanently damaged, the man must provide for her all her life. But this girl will not count as one of the man’s four permanent wives. He also is not permitted to marry the girl’s sister.”

Why are Vladimir Putin’s opponents dying?
Issue of 2007-01-29
Posted 2007-01-22
Saturday, October 7th, was a marathon of disheartening tasks for Anna Politkovskaya. Two weeks earlier, her father, a retired diplomat, had died of a heart attack as he emerged from the Moscow Metro while on his way to visit Politkovskaya’s mother, Raisa Mazepa, in the hospital. She had just been diagnosed with cancer and was too weak even to attend her husband’s funeral. “Your father will forgive me, because he knows that I have always loved him,” she told Anna and her sister, Elena Kudimova, the day he was buried. A week later, she underwent surgery, and since then Anna and Elena had been taking turns helping her cope with her grief.
Politkovskaya was supposed to spend the day at the hospital, but her twenty-six-year-old daughter, who was pregnant, had just moved into Politkovskaya’s apartment, on Lesnaya Street, while her own place was being prepared for the baby. “Anna had so much on her mind,’’ Elena Kudimova told me when we met in London, before Christmas. “And she was trying to finish her article.’’ Politkovskaya was a special correspondent for the small liberal newspaper Novaya Gazeta, and, like most of her work, the piece focussed on the terror that pervades the southern republic of Chechnya. This time, she had been trying to document repeated acts of torture carried out by squads loyal to the pro-Russian Prime Minister, Ramzan Kadyrov. In the past seven years, Politkovskaya had written dozens of accounts of life during wartime; many had been collected in her book “A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya.” Politkovskaya was far more likely to spend time in a hospital than on a battlefield, and her writing bore frequent witness to robbery, rape, and the unbridled cruelty of life in a place that few other Russians—and almost no other reporters—cared to think about. One day at the Ninth Municipal Hospital, in Grozny, Politkovskaya encountered a sixty-two-year-old woman named Aishat Suleimanova, whose eyes expressed “complete indifference to the world,’’ she wrote in a typical piece. “And it is beyond one’s strength to look at her naked body. She’s been disembowelled like a chicken. The surgeons have cut into her from above her chest to her groin.’’ …-

Court upholds enforced divorce
RIYADH, (Reuters Life!) – A Saudi couple have been forced to divorce against their will by a top court because of arcane tribal customs which allowed the woman’s family to seek a split, the pair’s lawyer said on Sunday.
Abdul-Rahman Al-Lahem said the court had upheld a ruling from a lower court and backed the divorce on the basis of the man’s family background. “The appeals court in Riyadh has supported the divorce because of ‘inappropriate lineage’,” he said in a statement.
The family of the Saudi woman, called Fatima, began legal action in 2005, saying her husband was not of sufficiently prestigious tribal stock to marry her, and had lied about his tribal background.
The woman and her two children were imprisoned for refusing to return to her family’s custody after the lower court first annulled the marriage. Custom in the conservative kingdom requires women to live with their families until marriage. ”
