  1. BMI w/o gender, body shape, age is useless.
Covid outcome higher @20% vs 18% with asthma?

    1. They do ask age and gender. However, I question the BMI calculator. I’m 5’10”, female, and currently weigh 135. I am definitely under weight, and a lot of people remark on. This thing says my BMI is “healthy” and says I would be a healthy weight down to 129 pounds. If I weighed 129 I would look skeletal. I’m on the verge now. That’s kind of crazy. (They say my BMI is 18.5.)

Though I’m 69, have asthma and Crohn’s disease (and rheumatoid arthritis) they give me a 10% chance of testing positive for Covid (I gave “fatigue” ad a symptom. Actually, I agree with that. I do a number of thongs to boost my immune system, but just had a long bout of bronchitis, ear infections, fatigue. And still have swollen neck glands and a near constant sinus alike headache. And loss of taste and smell (which can happen from numerous viruses, sinus inflammation, etc.) Can’t easily shake that stuff.

But no Covid. I refused to be tested until recently. Now I’ve had two rapid tests. My husband has a hospital procedure tomorrow so they did a PCR test there a few days ago. Nothing. I’m of the Dr. David Martin school of thought when ie comes to Covid.

  2. weird calculator…

adding in NSAIDs reduced my probability from 30% to 26%

also, not really sure if the BMI is at all useful since it’s largely not used for what its original purpose was, and the bands were reduced sometime in the 90s

  3. Defenders of BMI say that it only gives poor results for top-level athletes.

Garbage. Walk into any gym or fitness centre and you’ll find people who have low body fat but are technically overweight according to BMI. Putting on muscle isn’t rocket science.

The modern emphasis on core strength makes this even more so, as the core includes your largest muscles.

    1. As my mother always told me … I’m “big boned” BMI … SMH … Not quite the same thing as fat and sedentary.

  4. My risk for severe Covid after testing went from4% low when I put my income at $60,000 to 21% High when I put it at $260,000. Go figure.

  5. I wonder what that calculator would show for Kim Mi-soo, 29, Disney actress, fit and healthy.

Just suddenly died. Like that. Hmmmmmmm. Odd, no cause of death was clearly expressed on the story. And of course, our dear friends in the media tell us that it’s not nice to speculate either.

It’s pretty normal for healthy 29 year olds to just die. Right? Amiright?

  6. Hmmm….apparently I am overweight. Strange, considering I have very little fat anywhere on my body.
