In the spirit of Henry Livingston’s famous poem, this evening we learn how to build a sleigh.  And from our families here at SDA to yours, we heartily wish you all a Very Merry Christmas!

Don’t worry about sharing any tips this weekend.  Instead, paint a word picture of how you are are enjoying this special time of the year!

  2. For some reason, watching the movie Gremlins became a Christmas Eve tradition for me and I’ve got that on right now.

    My mother once asked me if I’d ever seen it. When I replied that I did, and liked it, she went on to say that she and my father had one of their own, referring to my canine step-brother. He was quite impish when he was a puppy.

      1. The first time I saw the movie was the day before I was to return to Armpit College after the summer break. I roared with laughter because the critters reminded me a lot of my students.

BAD – Re: “the critters reminded me a lot of my students” – I had a colleague who came from Texas during the boom years (i.e. any time BT, Before Trudeau) and he said that when he went out in the evening while visiting Fort McMurray the patrons of a certain watering hole bore a striking resemblance to the creatures at a Star Wars bar. I think I was at that bar once and I know what he meant. He had completed several tours of duty in Iraq. I wonder if he had a similar experience at a Hookah bar. Jabba the Hutt almost always had a hookah. And Epstein is alleged to have enabled Clinton to always have one… as I digress. Merry Christmas, Ho Ho Ho (as Clinton might have said when arriving at Little St. James Island*) and happy Gremlins viewing.

          1. I recall being in places like that at one time or another in my younger days.

            As far as my canine step-brother gremlin is concerned, I hope he liked his present. However, since it was made from cloth, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s destroyed it by now. I once gave him a lamb squeaky made from cloth and, according to my mother, it took him about 20 minutes to not only have the stuffing all over the place but wreck the squeaker.

        2. BAD – Re wrecked squeaker – our tiny pup (6 pounds) kept chewing on a superball that just fit in her mouth until she had bitten chunks out of it…

  7. Thanks Kate and friends. 12:30 here. Just looking at SDA one last time. The loyal golden has chewed a couple sticks and me the dad had a couple drinks. Kids are older and Christmas morning will be at around 9:30 not 3am lol.

    Hopefully 2021 is better Not sure though.

    Our family lost a couple since last Christmas Eve in 2019. These family get togethers will never be the same. Nor will any future ones be taken for granted.

      I know the feeling. After my father died, I paid an annual Christmas visit to my cousin here in the city. He was in poor health and bedridden, living in a care home.

      A year ago, he caught the bug, but recovered from it. Three months later, he died, though from other causes. I’m now down to one immediate relative in this country and she’s in her 90s now.

  11. I’ll spend Christmas Day as I have spent most recent ones: sleeping till noon, watching footage of the Romanian Revolution, and praying that our Saviour will return soon to finish the job of redeeming the world.

    I have no family in Ottawa and none elsewhere worth traveling any distance to see, much less buy gifts for. Christmas Day is the one day I insist that corporate capitalism leave me in peace.

    Certainly has been an interesting time with our mainstream media and political antics going on.

        Had some long tall old (70+) clown walk up to me yesterday to declare in a loud voice in WaklMart: “you’re not wearing a mask..!!” The Abject look of pure HATRED emanated from his face…? simply unreal. I said yep, have a nice day….buddy replied “:outside right now.!!’ I just laughed at him…”..go get your 5th booster sonny…”

        Only thing missing was a German Accent and a Jet black uniform…shades of my Dads Experiences…just surreal.

        The idiocy force & latent wannabe NAZI is strong among many.

    Serious question since I’m not a dr. If omicron is contagious but not deadly (25,000 cases in Africa with no deaths), why try and control it? Why not let it go and let people get it and develop immunity? Especially for those who won’t get vaccinated? Pls, no hate, I’m just curious.

      1. My daughter works with kids. She got sick a couple of times and got tested each time. Both times she had mild covid like symptoms. Both times she was told that she did not have covid.

        It’s not that the cold and flu have gone away. It’s that they are not as interesting as covid so they don’t get mentioned in the media.

    Our own world is affected this year, with our daughter now caught in the germophobia world, declining dinner this year, because our 2 year old grandson has been nagged by earaches….and somehow that makes him at high risk for Covid……..so they wanted us to wear masks in our own home for a visit. Not falling into that paranoid trap.

    She knows nurses, and they’ve seen sick kids in the hospital….FFS. The nurses I’ve known in the past were neurotic know it alls, smarter than doctors, including an aunt that fits that description.

    Making the best of Christmas anyways, we’ll see what happens, and enjoy our day any way we can, it’s not a day for discord. If they don’t want fresh Turkey, stuffing and all the trimmings and dessert goodies, well, they can settle for TV dinners or McDonalds. Their choice……sad to see the level of paranoia that otherwise normal people are falling into, willingly.

    So what if it isn’t Christmas music? It’s great stuff to listen to.

    Attended mass this morning at a parish in southern Colorado, that was the most multi-cultural church community I’ve ever noted.

    In so many ways, I think progressive attacks on working class Americans are rooted in envy. We are so many things that they are not: integrated, accepting, loving, and happy.

    I’m proud of us.
