  19. Remember a discussion here around June about flood threats to the Three Gorges Dam? That came and went, no breakage.

    But now there’s another period of heavy rain and rising water levels. Could be trouble looming with some flooding and evacuations upstream from the reservoir already. The report I read suggested a week to ten days for a time frame of this threat reaching a higher level. Seems like a moderate alert rather than worst case scenario. Apparently there’s a stalled frontal zone between warm subtropical air over south China and cold arctic air over the northeast, similar to what sometimes happens around Tennessee and Arkansas or southern Missouri in late winter. You can get heavy rains in several pulses over a long period that way.
