Y2Kyoto: The Rain In Spain

Falls mainly in sheets of snow and ice;

Spain registered its coldest temperature in recorded history on Wednesday, January 6 with the Catalan Pyrenees logging a bone-chilling -34.1C (-29.3F).

Yesterday’s reading busted the all-time low temperature record for the Iberian Peninsula–which also includes Portugal. The record had stood since February 2, 1956 (solar minimum of cycle 18) when a reading of -32C (-25.6F) was observed in Estany-Gento, located in the province of Lleida.

  1. Yawn. Again, intentionally or otherwise, you’re confusing global CLIMATE change with local WEATHER patterns.

I realize that the distinction can be hard for some folks to grasp. The first thing to understand is that different words can have different meanings.

    1. I guess you’re not clued in enough to know that climate is the long term aggregate of weather. When weather is unusually cold for a prolonged period, that becomes the new normal climate at that location. Right now this is an isolated event. But we were promised that British children would no longer know what snow was by… when was that supposed to be… 2014? 2020 at the latest. So far all model predictions over 15 years old have been wrong, and reality continues to “warm” at 1/3 the predicted rate of the models (that are based on “CO2 is the only variable that affects temperature”).

If the mathematical models I work with performed as badly as the climate models I’d be fired. If I tried to take a mine design to the stock market based on a model that is as wrong as the climate models, I’d no longer be an engineer and would be in jail for fraud.

And in terms of long-term norms, how about the Alps being at near the high glacier volume over the last 10,000 years? https://wattsupwiththat.com/2021/01/07/very-inconvenient-alps-glacier-historytop-glaciologists-alps-were-ice-free-6000-years-ago/ The max extent of these glaciers was around 500 years ago, and they’ve been shrinking ever since.

        1. Open pit, so no. A pit wall collapsing because of an error at that level would kill 5-100 though (depending on the depth of the pit at the time).

(for non-miners – an adit is an open to surface on one side, it’s a primary access to an underground mine. Think “a tunnel that’s only open on one end”.)

    2. And when the whole Media complex is freaking out the next time there’s a hurricane I’m sure you’ll be back to comment?

      1. Sure, Boots, happy to come back to call out the media whenever they commit what we apparently both agree is the either ignorant or willfully dishonest conflation of weather and climate.

While we’re here now though, are you willing to comment now about Kate committing the same type of error in this very post?

        1. If every heat-wave or dry spell is called out by some media folks as an example of global warming, why is it that the countervailing examples are only weather, Kathy?

    3. Next time some liberal uses a weather event as proof of global warming I’ll be sure to come back for your immediate rebuttal.

      1. “Next time some liberal uses a weather event as proof of global warming I’ll be sure to come back for your immediate rebuttal.”

Sounds good, John. I’d be happy to do that, in precisely the same way that you’re now going to rebut Kate for trying to use this Spanish weather event as proof of the absence of global warming. You are in tendering to do that, right? Because you also believe in staking consistent positions on issues, holding yourself to certain standards of intellectual integrity, and not resorting on whataboutism and hypocrisy, right?

    4. Translation: It’s only “weather” when it contradicts your bullshit narrative.

      1. And it’s only “climate” when it supports yours, Edward.

So, now that we’ve agreed that everyone is capable of hypocrisy, shall we all agree to try to behave better? Or would you rather just continue this pointless cycle of demonizing and talking past each other forever?

          1. I’m thinking of a different “c” word; and it isn’t charming.
But I’m having fun looking at my frozen Margarita.

    5. Climate change = When it fits our narrative and we can’t change the data
Weather = When it does not fit our narrative and we can’t change the data

      1. Climate change = When it fits our narrative and we can’t change the data

Climate change = When it fits our narrative and, when it doesn’t, we change the data.

    6. With you Watermelons, the SAME words can have DIFFERENT meanings whenever it suits “the narrative”.

    7. Hey! I have an idea! Why doesn’t President Fraud of the USA sign on to the Paris Accord … and intentionally cripple the US economy and unleash energy poverty across the American middle class? And then … the seas will stop rising … weather … WEATHER … will never become “EXTREME” anymore … Right?

Yes … the Faux-greenies have “educated” us about “weather”. And we’ve been taught … that when weather turns “EXTREME!” … it is really climate change. If the weather is “normal” … then it has nothing to do with climate whatsoever. Right? That’s the narrative?

    8. Kathy – Thank you for your smarmy reply. So let us talk climate change. I live on a glacial plain. Here in a good year we might get 120 frost free days. 90 is not that uncommon. Some summers are warmer , some are cooler. Same with winter. I am a little long in the tooth and have worked outside a great deal and tend to take notice of these things.
So lets talk about the long term , which is as I can best decipher from the ever changing rhetoric designed to make people appear ignorant is “climate”. Eleven thousand years ago was the end of the last period of glaciation known as the Wisconsin Ice age. This began about seventy-five thousand years ago . There is some controversy as to whether this was the fourth or fifth period of glaciation. At this time Hudson bay was covered by a thickness of about 3.25 kilometers of ice and that ice extended nearly 1200 kilometers into Wisconsin. Any hint here that the climate changes significantly and at times rapidly?

Now nearly every climate model has totally missed the predicted result. The only one I am aware of that was close was Russian and it did not predict catastrophe. in fact the original recorded data from the thirties shows higher average temperatures than what are now claimed to be the warmest years ever. But of course the rapid change predicted spells imminent doom!!!

Now. as I sit looking at my neighbors solar panels 1/2 covered in the inch of snow we have had in the last 3 weeks { in spite of far above average temperatures}, I am wondering what is your point ? To imply Kate and the rest us are ignorant? That it is wrong to point out that in spite of incessant narrative that it is hotter than ever and doom is imminent we continue to have record low temperatures and often cooler than average periods. If you have some hard non manipulated or non modelled facts present them. If not keep your baseless nonsense and smarmy attitude.

    9. The first thing to understand Kathy is that weather and climate are kind of codependent. You can’t have one without the other. I think that is a verse to a song.

  2. 4 years ago tomorrow I was at the Alhambra in shorts at 8 am for opening on a private tour.

  3. L- The Trudeau Liberals Climate Crisis *Team must investigate this event, personally A.S.A.P. !
Their *masks will keep them safe.
Deputy P.M Freeland can act as their Sherpa guide.
Climate Barbie can be in charge of the sled dogs.
If Just in can learn a snow dance, he’ll drop the average global temperature, immeasurably.
If he can learn the snow dance really well; he can return when you know what freezes over.

  4. They’d be wearing snowshoes during the running of the bulls and they’d still twist it as a climate change emergency. Face it – They’ve got it going all their way so fuggedaboutit.
We had the chance to punch their teeth out when it really mattered but we were too nice.
So here we are and let that be a lesson.
In the meantime…let the carbon tax flow through you.

  5. I have noticed that the TV and phone temperatures ( the low temperatures ) are always 2 to 5 degrees warmer than my outside temperature gauge. Whats up with that ?

    1. Probably location near a heat vent, or in the sun. Theirs that is. My outside thermometer is in my mail box, in the shade. It’s pretty accurate. Minus -3 C right now @ 19:44 MTN time. Humidity 55%. Inside we’re 20 C with 30% humidity.

Last I checked we had three seasons on this planet. Here it is winter now. For us at 1044 meters ASL, in the shadow of the Rockies, it’s been mild so far this year. I’ve been living here for a few decades. We’ll probably experience “winter” in March this year. Minus -30 C and a stiff breeze. Not unusual. It rains in June. We are considered as “semi desert” climatically. It ain’t Tronna where everything weather wise is decided in this country, that’s for sure..

  6. I have it on good authority that because the arctic is warming so fast, all the cold air has to go somewhere so it is heading south. Or something like that. I am assured this is science, real science.

    1. I’m old enough to remember when the “science” said that the Arctic ice was going to thin to the point where open ocean developed across the north pole or near offer. The resulting moisture would be sucked up, distributed further south as snow, and would be so much that it would trigger the next ice age.

That was before “science” decided mankind was evil and so chose CO2 as the villain because it is released when fossil fuels are burned. Forget the fact that H20 (good old di-hydrogen oxide) is a much more potent greenhouse gas, and that CO2 is plant food rather than pollution, it made a good story to scare folk.

Now we seem to be heading into a ?Maunder minimum, it’s going to be interesting to watch “science” as crops fail because of the cold.

  7. This is just another rare event that the leftist partisan operatives masquerading as media will omit from any coverage as it conflicts with their assigned policy imperatives. Climate hysteria is policy number one as it seems to work well on the mindless masses and has extensive corporate and academic buy-in for all the readily available rent seeking bounty. Besides, it has worked wonders at distracting the mindless from the reality of the governing psychopaths who have bankrupted the treasuries of all the welfare states while buying votes.

    1. Dead right John.
They, the media idiots, claim they do not lie to us,they just omit so much of the story,if it defeats the Narrative.
I am still waiting of two promised archives to be digitized and report in,the first being the British Navy logs, that took daily weather conditions, where ever Navy ships were, for the duration of the Empire.
Second The Hudson Bay journals,as each factor was requested to record the daily weather..
Both were announced as “to be done” over a decade ago..I think they FUBARed the narrative.
Also remember the Climate Research Unit fiasco?
They “accidentally” destroyed the particular data set they claimed was the base data..It was to be recreated within 3 years of the Enquiry, the one that never did examine the science, cause they did not have that data..
Funny how that never got done.

The Cult of Calamitous Climate has done us all a favour, through their hysteria, dishonesty and madness, they have helped to identify a group of parasites I refer to as Gang Green.
Who are as beneficial to the society they live off of,as gangrene is to a wounded man.

Life is good when the people who hate you, self identify.
As our American Citizens are discovering.

  8. Every weather event changes the climate since the climate is the aggregate of all past weather events. Therefore the argument about weather and climate being two different things is inherently false. If a theory proposes a paradigm that climate will shift in a certain direction, then any event in the opposite direction is a contradiction of that theory. Climate change proponents became aware of this potential problem for them, and changed the goalposts by claiming (almost entirely without evidence) that the climate was becoming more variable, a paradigm that could only be refuted by long intervals of bland weather, something the media and general public would be unlikely to notice or comment upon.

Frauds of the modern left are quite sophisticated. That’s why they fool even intelligent people from time to time.

  9. It is 10:20 PM here now. We are about 4 miles from the Red Deer Air Port where they get the temperature from ( I think ). 981 m elevation. My temperature gauge out in the tree says – 17 C. The phone and TV say, – 12 C. My question is, are they messing with the low temperatures to make it look warmer than it really is ???

    1. Hi Car, because you’re so close to the airport, it’s unlikely to be the urban heat island effect. (a logarithmic temperature increase, as the population of a city grows from 10,000 to 100,000, there’s about 1 degree of background temperature increase. 100,000 to 1 million is another degree increase. ) It’s much more likely that it’s a microsite influence.
      https://wattsupwiththat.com/2019/05/03/mosher-microsite-bias-matters-more-than-uhi-especially-in-the-first-kilometer/
Anthony Watts entire involvement in the global warming debate came about because his family was running a long-term station, and he wondered what happened what the difference in the readings would be when they painted the stevenson screen.

  10. “” microsite influence “” I will set up a temperature gauge one click away and check it every night walking the dog. I will let you know. Thanks C_Miner.
