Please, folks, support Arnie and Kathy. Kathy has had a really rough time of it the past few years fighting cancer, especially since Canada’s “universal health care” can make it very difficult to get treatment in a timely manner, and to get access to experimental treatment.
Kathy’s original “Five Feet of Fury” is legendary, and Blazing Cat Fur has been a mainstay of Canadian blogging for years. Please, please let them know that you care.
Amen.
Also, I thank people on this thread reminiscing about Kathy’s contributions to the Conservative Cause, and the fact that she was involved early on. Also, there is a fund raiser over at the BCF site.

hard to separate out her wittiest turn of phrase, but, “never an avalanche around when you need one”
is certainly in the running.

I always liked “you’re not smart enough to tell me how to live.” I use it all the time these days.
That’s my pick too. Praying for her and Arnie.
My dad got butchered earlier in this year with his ‘cancer surgery’ The treatment he received was grotesque and appalling. I’ll NEVER forgive Alberta Health Services and the 3rd world Peter Lougheed Centre for what they did to him.
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. What a feisty commentator and excellent writer Kathy is.
I’ve followed Kathy from her “Relapsed Catholic” days and then on to “Five Feet of Fury” era or was it the other way around? Matters not.
Loved her biting commentary. Those were the days Kathy made the Kinsellas and “Canadian Cynics” of the world lose their effing minds.
I don’t know what her illness is and it really doesn’t matter that I don’t know but it seems quite serious.
I honestly wish her nothing but the best.
I, too, go back to the “Relapsed Catholic” days (what a great name/title!). I loved when Kathy would post pin up girl pics; I could picture feminist heads exploding! I also enjoyed reading “Confessions of a Failed Slut.” We exchanged a few emails over the years, nothing she’d recall, but on occasion I’d see something and think, “Kathy would have a field day with this!” and I’d have to share it with her.
Keep fighting Kathy!! Best wishes to you both.
The University of Toronto have kept a few of Kathy’s poems online, and have not gotten around to cancelling her completely—probably because they know she was one of the very few Canadian poets of her generation whose work will outlive her.
Kathy Shaidle’s blog, _Five Feet of Fury_, was my introduction to the Canadian conservative blogosphere, for which I owe her a great debt of gratitude. I devoutly hope she’ll stick around for many years yet; her recovery shall be a daily intention in my and my wife’s nightly rosary.
Sorry to hear she’s in ill health. All the best to her and her loved ones.
One heck of a woman. One heck of a Canadian. Brave, smart, funny. Had the pleasure of meeting her a couple of times. There’s been enough information available over the past year through BlazingCatFur for me to think there is no real chance she can beat this. I hope she passes peacefully. It will be a terrible loss for Arnie, for those who admire and respect her, and for Canada and for sane oeople in our world in general. They don’t make them like that any more. The way our world is going, they won’t ever make them again. Huge respect and admiration.
God Bless her in every way, as she’s blessed us. Thank you.
Wow…so sad to hear this. I met Kathy and Arny a few years ago when she spoke at our REAL Women conference in North Bay. She was Five Feet of Fury for sure…an inspiration to all of us.
Good to know that she has faith in a loving God who will carry both of them thru this storm.
I am praying that she will be with us for Christmas.
as one who fought and won the “battle” I wish her the best, even tho I often disagreed with her, hope you eventually win Kathy!!!!
Yes, shot a prayer their way, the value of which is questionable. Palliative care is not indictive of winning. Sad but true. Read her material , maybe from the start, not sure. Five feet of fury.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
I believe God expects nothing less from us. As He gave us life, it is our obligation to fight for it. Suicide is beloved by the left … as their ultimate “triumph” against God.
Kenji, according to religious teachings, the god gave the ability to choose, and there are times when choosing one’s exit is a right god gave us. And NO, I am not being negative to your post, just instructive!
God certainly gave us the ability to choose–including the ability to choose wrongly (as Adam and Eve did [Gen 13])–but He also gave us guidance as to which is the right choice in the context of this discussion: life (Dt 30, 19-20). So, while we are able to choose, it does not follow that all choices are good in His sight. As the ancient Jewish prayer goes, “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
Her contribution to our community will live on, she is indeed a great lady, one of the few who has made a difference in our world. My thoughts are with her and her family.
Few lives are lived in perfect circles, yet many evolve in convoluted and adventurous ways. We are all so much better for her contribution to our world.
Sad news. Kathy (and Kate) have been my guides through this madness.
IMMORTAL SHAIDLEISMS:
“Come back Lufwaffe, all is forgiven”.
“We shoulda picked our own cotton”.
And – gasp –
“Come and get me fairies”.
First encountered this 5 ft dynamo at the same time as Miz. Kate in 2004 via Mark Steyn. God bless you Kathy and Arnie.
My favourite is the 5,697th stampede free day at Lourdes (similar words to that effect) whenever Mecca rolled around.
We laugh because it’s true.
OMGosh! I forgot that one. Thanks for the reminder.
Kathy also writes great movie reviews. Two that stand out for me are “Dodsworth” and “Make Way For Tomorrow.”
TCM is airing the latter this Sunday.
Other than her odd taste in music, I love Kathy’s columns and her feisty manner. Praying for her. Hang in there!
I had the honour of meeting Kathy along with Ann Coulter in London Ont a few years ago. The highlight of the event when a bad attitude muslim woman was complaining about their being banned from travel. She asked Coulter how she was to travel with all the bans. Shaidle stood up and said “Take a Camel”.
Much hilarity ensued.
Her quick wit was in the forefront that night.
May God Bless you Kathy.
When Kathy finally makes it to the other side, she needs to ask God to please send us more avalanches.
Kathy is an original.
Best wishes for your full recovery and ‘moar’ biting humour, Kathy.
May God Bless Kathy and Arnie.
Some wonderful comments here which I find hard to add to. I remember reading her blog from the early days and was saddened when she stopped posting at FFF. A great talent and wit. Film reviews at Steynonline are top drawer.
