China Telecom, the large international communications carrier with close ties to the Chinese government, misdirected big chunks of Internet traffic through a roundabout path that threatened the security and integrity of data passing between various providers’ backbones for two and a half years, a security expert said Monday. It remained unclear if the highly circuitous paths were intentional hijackings of the Internet’s Border Gateway Protocol or were caused by accidental mishandling.
For almost a week late last year, the improper routing caused some US domestic Internet communications to be diverted to mainland China before reaching their intended destination…
“It remained unclear if the highly circuitous paths were intentional hijackings…”
Who writes this crap?

Meanwhile here in Sunny Ways Canada, another economic success story for Groper. After billions of taxpayer dollars have been poured into Bombardier, the company has announced five thousand people will be layed off in Ontario and Quebec.
And in related news, the LRT in Kitchener Waterloo, manufactured by Bombardier, has finally entered the testing phase – no cars running, but it is being tested. And high speed buses are a big success ().
Yes because the street cars in Toronto were such a success story.
And at least five thousand and one of those laid off will vote, next chance they get, for parties that promise to give more taxpayers’ money to Bombardier, hoping it will mean they can get their jobs back.
The Globalization of Canada is well on its way – Chinese style Marxism to replace our constitutional Monarchy.
Stats Can demanding our personal Financial Records.
“Thow Shalt Pay Carbon Tax”
Castro was such a good guy eh.?
I do admire the basic Chinese Dictatorship
CBC Touting Huawai Cell phones….Really..? Lets have a good look at that particular deal shall we.?? Seemingly a Direct line for all to Bejing – How nice.
I thought I read recently the Lieberals allowed China to put a listening device in Canadian waters which is near a US sub base on the west coast
Try to stay on topic, folks.
So they nicked $150k from some obscure “e-wallet, e-payment” system I’ve never heard of. In what is suspected of being a “trial run”. The potential disaster to our “e-world” should China (or any other bad-actor) hijack a critical system would surely precipitate a world war. I expect the nukes would start flying as all “talk” would be worthless.
MY President is treating China exactly as they deserve to be treated … as a foe. A respected foe. Sadly the bobble-head leader of Canada, treats China as a … “friend”. I weep for China’s serf State called Canada.
I DO hope the intelligence services are not as naive and inept as some of our politicians on the China file. I realize Kate’s headline means the exact opposite of what it states, and I hope to hell our government agencies do too.
China has so effectively used the icon of “the smiling Chinaman” to infiltrate every important sector of government and industry in the West since the 1980’s,it is astounding anyone fell for their subterfuge, but they did.
I don’t know what in hell is wrong with people that they detest “those Russian thugs” and have absolutely no trust in anything Russia says or does, but with China,it’s “oh,they’re so friendly and courteous, always smiling,of course we can trust them, they are our friends now”.
Even some of our highest ranking politicians whose names shall be unspoken have fallen for China’s theater for the stupid Western politicians. China has always had a plan to dominate the world by whatever means necessary, their belief in Chinese manifest destiny (without the assistance of a deity) makes the American version look amateurish.
China has only one goal: what is best for China, period. They have no friends, only people or countries they can exploit, for China. China is not a Boy Scout nation like Canada, they quietly go about their business while most of the world is unaware of their activities, our media seems blind to China’s machinations while every time Israel farts it makes world headlines.
Is China evil? No more so than any other nation that looks out for itself, only difference is they are better at it than most, especially sweet Little Canader and it’s sjw government.
This story of the move by China Telecom, who apparently “have ties to the government”, which means they are completely under the control of the government, doesn’t seem to have made it’s way to National Newswatch of CBC yet, so I guess it’s nothing to worry about. Go back to sleep, folks.
Everything in China has ties to the Chinese government. It’s a Communist country, communist governments operate on the principle that everything and everyone is owned by the collective, and the Party is in charge of and controls the collective for the good of the collective, and the good of the collective is whatever the Party says it is.
That’s why PM Castreau admires their system, and why his father was a Marxist. It’s so much easier to be heroically good to the people when you get to decide what’s good for the people, whether they like it or not.
People in the West really can’t comprehend the level to which the CCP is integrated with everything below the central-committee level. It’s insidious and almost complete. It’s actually quite a beautiful country to visit in most respects, but our concepts of “nanny state” ain’t got nothin’ on what happens over there. One visit is generally enough to see the level of top-down control going on, but at the same time, in an odd dichotomy, individual Chinese have certain levels of freedom that we’ve lost over here. It almost explains why Chinese immigrants have little respect for our laws when they come here, because they have that same level of respect for their own: whatever you can get away with won’t hurt you or the state, and if you get caught, well, that’s just the cost you have to bear. By the same token, there’s a soft-caste system in place, and the concept of voluntary cooperation is almost non-existent, but the family-obligation levels are almost off the charts. Despite legislated equality, sexism is rampant and largely accepted, and don’t get me started on other special-interest groups.
But it is a total-surveillance state. They watch you everywhere, but there are holes. They take notice of everything. If your smartphone was made in China, it likely has something extra inside it that you’re better off not thinking about. If it was made outside of China to be used in China, something was likely added after it left the factory, if not during production (viz. Google and Facebook’s willingness to neuter themselves to get into the marketplace). There is no such thing as privacy or personal data. You frequently need your passport or Chinese ID just to get into museums (the grander the scale, the more likely). Security checkpoints are everywhere. Police will randomly stop pedestrians to check their papers (they mostly ignore foreigners, but it happens to them too).
There is no part of your life that the state does not touch, and that’s our current government’s wet dream. Our freedom has been slipping for decades, and I think they feel they’ve waited long enough.
Is China evil? No more so than any other nation that looks out for itself
Really? China = US?
Why not invite them in, then? They will be noble masters, and you, their slave.
“It remained unclear if the highly circuitous paths were intentional hijackings…”
Is anyone stupid enough to consider this a question? Nothing China does is unintentional.
scar: Nothing China does is UNINTENTIONAL is right!!! Our PM Tru-groper is so in love with China that he can’t see what is happening…China works slowly building up our (PM Tru-groper) confidence baby steps moving slowly into Canada. China Telecom spying starting with the Huawai Cell Phones. China has already been buying property in Vancouver inch by inch then before you know it we are a Communist Country. I do NOT trust China as far as I can throw them and that isn’t far! PM Tru-groper on the other hand is in love with their Socialist Communist country and how they can change their economy on a dime!!
“It remained unclear if the highly circuitous paths were intentional hijackings …” but comparing this to the frequency and duration of cases of Chinese internet traffic diverting through Canada, Rwanda, Sweden one might be inspired to jump some conclusions.
old news folks, old news. in some circles anyway.
when looking @ Chirer, one needs to keep in mind they are THE experts at adopting proven technologies, be it by buying or stealing it. it has been the way for a couple thousand years in some cases.
we had some Nortel eqpt in the mainframe room 30 years ago, I thought, hmmm, thats nice, our OWN stuff for a change. then this year I found out Nortel failed because the Chirese stole the technology via hacking the designs and ran with it.
pm groper is delighted by these developments.
when is enough of khadr’s 10 mill going to come home to roost in the form of a suicide vest positioned close enough to render him into ity bity pieces?
then this year I found out Nortel failed because the Chirese stole the technology via hacking the designs and ran with it.
Correction: Northern Telecom failed because of an arrogant attitude and an incompetent management. (I never did like the name Nortel.)
During the 1980s, I was interviewed several times for jobs at different NT locations. One thing that immediately stood out was that NT employees thought they were not just the smartest people in the room, but also better than everyone else. They truly believed that they could do no wrong. (Remember its public ad campaign some 20 years ago?)
That attitude led to the staff believing they were accountable to no one. I had an interview with Bell Northern Research at Bell’s Corners at one time. A bunch of NT kids saw my CV and simply wanted to chat with me and see what I looked like, so they called me, and arranged for me to fly to the Ottawa area. That’s it. There wasn’t a job for me, as such. At most of the companies I used to work for, spending money like that could result in one getting skinned by the boss.
At the same time, its upper management consisted of a collection of pompous asses. I began following NT through the financial papers during the early 1980s, and I was never impressed by the bosses. In my opinion, the last one who was worth anything was Walter Light. Once he left his position, and was succeeded by Paul Stern, things started going downhill.
The share price was held artificially high by BCE holding a large block of NT’s stocks for several years. Once it dumped them, the price began to slide. I know about that because my father used to have some in his portfolio. He got burned because, contrary to traditional wisdom, he bought high and sold low.
I never invested in NT. I never liked the company and my broker at the time didn’t recommend it.
That’s not to say that NT didn’t produce a good product. I have an old NT touch-tone telephone designed nearly 40 years ago. It’s a beautiful piece of equipment, robust, solid, and functional, using discrete components rather than surface-mounted technology. If something goes wrong with it, I could probably repair it.
It’s a pity that the company wasn’t the same way.
That’s journalists’ way of saying:
“We know as well as you do what’s going on here, gentle reader, but exposing the crimes of the Chinese communists is only wise if you want to get drummed out of the industry for good, or killed by Chinese intelligence, or both.
“We didn’t come clean on the crimes of Soviet communism till the higher-ups were ready to pull the plug on the USSR. We valued our lives. The KGB were on the ball in those days. Trust us, we covered for them on the rare occasions they dropped it.”
Who writes this crap? The same people who write (after a Muslim kills a bunch of folks going about their every day life)…”a motive was not readily apparent.”
