The Snows Of Settled Science

WUWT;

Global average temperatures over land have plummeted by more than 1C since the middle of this year – their biggest and steepest fall on record. According to satellite data, the late 2016 temperatures are returning to the levels they were at after the 1998 El Nino.
The news comes amid mounting evidence that the recent run of world record high temperatures is about to end. The fall, revealed by Nasa satellite measurements of the lower atmosphere, has been caused by the end of El Nino – the warming of surface waters in a vast area of the Pacific west of Central America.

  1. I get the feeling that because they pushed the narrative of global warming so hard its not possible or plausible to change it to man made global cooling now.

  2. They just told us 2 weeks ago the 2016 was the hottest year ever. I’m sure they will be issuing a retraction that will be all over the news any day now

  3. “They just told us 2 weeks ago the 2016 was the hottest year ever. I’m sure they will be issuing a retraction that will be all over the news any day now”
Just as soon as my unicorn learns how to fly, along with his buddy ET!!!

  4. Climate Change has some confusion with metrics, the Global freaks are sure that in a 100 years we will be extinct… Sorry but you are out by an order of magnitude (X10). Stephen Hawking’s prediction IS/WAS 1000 years that we humans will find ourselves in a quandary… I think Hawking is short by at least another 1000 years.. The robotic world will need endless updated non-sustainable versions…. Nothing on the planet is sustainable, including Humans….

  5. Last night, TCM showed the movie Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. The premise is that the van Allen radiation belts suddenly catch fire (huh?) and surface temperatures rise dramatically to the point that there’s only 3 weeks left. The problem is solved by detonating a carefully placed nuclear warhead launched from the sub and blowing the whole mess out into space.
The “science” in the flick is pure hokum, but it makes me wonder if that’s what inspired the “climate change” movement. Yeah, it’s that dumb.
And, no, the movie wasn’t worth watching. Older SDA readers, though, might remember the mid-1960s TV series based on it.

  6. The climate is evolving. It has been doing so ever since it existed.
If it had not evolved we would never have existed.
A few millennia ago the high priests insisted upon throwing virgins into a volcano to stop the solar eclipses. Well the solar eclipses happened and everyone moved on. It was a means to control the population. Step out of line and you or your daughter may be needed to appease whatever caused eclipses.
Today the high priests of government are pulling the same crap and the media is eating it hook, line and sinker. Again, for the same reasons.

  7. // Global average temperatures over land have plummeted by more than 1C since the middle of this year //
“middle of this year” Let’see. That would be from about July to November.
Most of the land on this here globe is in the northern hemisphere.
In that hemisphere, the days are getting shorter, it’s late summer, it’s Fall, it’s winter.
    Wotta shock.!

  8. “…you or your daughter may be needed to appease…” As the people of Ontario are discovering and the people of Canada will discover under PM Butts, the current sacrificial virgin is the standard of living of those who are less equal.

  9. Actually off by 10X the other way according to this genius.
Guy McPherson, a biology professor at the University of Arizona, says the human destruction of our own habitat is leading towards the world’s sixth mass extinction.
Humans ‘don’t have 10 years’ left thanks to climate change – scientist

“I can’t imagine there will be a human on the planet in 10 years,” he says.
“We’re heading for a temperature within that span that is at or near the highest temperature experienced on Earth in the last 2 billion years.”

This from a perfessor “emeritus” (guymcpherson.com) so it must be true.

  10. // So, has the geography changed for all of the previous observations? //
    +
The land is cooling in the North, as it tends to do with shorter days that start around “the middle of the year”.
And since most of the land is in the North ….
Since you invoke geography, why didn’t they include the other 70% of the earth? Well one reason may be the recent temperatures 20 degrees above normal in the the eastern arctic and the fact that ocean atmospheres don’t cool as quickly.
The declining El Nino conditions mean that next year will probably be a bit cooler — but, after all, 2016 is still the hottest in the record books.

  11. Those are satellite measurements. Satellite measurements (which cover more of the globe and are thus more comprehensive)don’t show the warming that they want. Starting last year they discount the satellite measurements because that’s the only way they can have both 2015 & 16 as the hottest year on record.
So what will the warmists do about this data? They’ll ignore it as flawed, just like they have been.

  12. The ‘warmest year’ scam is a bogus fabrication of he media and politically motivated ‘scientists’. The calculated temperature difference that makes any year the ‘warmest’ is considerably smaller than the level of accuracy the temperature data can be measured. It’s like measuring the height of a group of people to the nearest foot then claiming the calculated average was accurate to a tenth of an inch. It’s an important mathematical concept called ‘significant figures’ and it’s conveniently ignored or misunderstood by the media and the general public. “Don’t confuse us with facts; we know what we believe.”

  13. Er, Dizzy, you did notice that the referenced data is from satellites?
El Nino and La Nina are aspects of the Pacific Ocean heat pump. When the heat pump leaves more hot water at surface, the whole atmosphere heats. When the heat pump sends the water deeper, the atmosphere cools (like now).
It’s not surprising. If the energy needed to increase the atmosphere by 1 degree were applied to the top portion of the ocean, the top 10 feet of the ocean would be all that would be heated by 1 degree. The liquid water in the oceans has a much higher heat capacity than the atmosphere. Which warms the other? Well, when you go to use a stove, does it have a heat source touching the pots from below or do you shine a warm light on them from above? If you think that the oceans have a lot of heat capacity, just imagine the volume and temperature of the magma in the mantle, and the effect on surface whenever some of it comes to surface (hint – it’s called a volcano).
Hah. Captcha “mountain mephisto”, demon from the mountain. Apt description for the effect of a volcano…

  14. @dizzy:
I see your point and agree …. the graph while it has some value as a metric it is not that the entire picture. I think it’s important that we stick to facts.
Pointing out that these are land temperatures and land temperatures are primarily northern temperatures and that winter is coming in the north does not imply that carbon taxes are critical, that we must build more windmills, etc, etc. Rather, it is a statement of fact.

  15. You don’t seem to be able to understand simple English……ALL of the observations were taken under the very same conditions and so in a relative sense, the graph is fine. And then you wander off to the ridiculous “2016 is still the hottest in the record books” B.S. I guess that depends on how tortured the data is in the “record books” and which ones you use and how many adjustments have been made to come up with the “desired” result. In any event, it is bunk.

  16. A bit of context:
But in autumn 2016 in the northern hemisphere – which has been a zany year for the region, with multiple records set for low levels of monthly sea ice – something is totally off. The Arctic is superhot, even as a vast area of cold polar air has been displaced over Siberia.
