Other than the money, expensive drinks and lack of Trump cheerleaders, it sounds like discussions on this site. The so-called establishment GOP included progressives, social conservatives and populists – the usual salad of modern conservatism and the full range of policy alternatives one will see from a Trump presidency, assuming he can beat Hillary.
Sort of on topic – history repeats itself:
Reagan- “Augustus” the man who ran the machine most effectively in the least odious manner to the Patricians AND the Plebs.
Bush the elder-“Tiberius” the inheritor who held the Plebs in barely concealed disdain…actually ran the Empire as well as Augustus but was unable to avoid the perception of indifference to liberty.
Bill Clinton = Caligula- was most generous of the heretofore but laid the groundwork for ruin and debauched the economy of the empire.
Bush the Younger as Claudius the seemingly inept and frivolous administrator faced with stabilizing the empire and recovery.
Obama as Nero the only person who could make Caligula seem sane.

“The last Great Hope for the Ordinary Sovereign American Citizen” That’s what I think. If Trump is a phony or a demagogue, then there is no hope. As far as saving Canadians, most I think don’t get it. They fail to realize what a risk JT is to their sovereignty. Canada strikes me as a country where people would willingly accept their demise if someone told them it would make them “better” than the Americans. I think that all the hoopla about accepting the 25000+ Syrian refugees had to do with wanting to convince ourselves of our moral superiority to the rest of the world (especially Americans). Nothing will save people from this sort of idiocy.

So Donald Trump is the hope of America.
So what exactly has he accomplished in his life to qualify him for presidency? Oh, he’s a successful businessman. I know lots of people who became successful once given the family fortune.
What are his core values? After 3 marriages and countless mistresses, I suppose someone out there still has confidence he is able to keep a most basic oath.
What’s his foreign policy? Defeat ISIS and build a wall. Pretty well everyone has said they will defeat the caliphate. Even Hillary. Good luck with that. I’m sure the Mexicans are taking a collection right now to pay for the wall.

blackfox, your description of Hillary Clinton is precisely spot on.
The reason why “the world is at peace with Hillary Clinton” is because SHE is like what most the world is and, as a result, most of the world can easily identify with her:
– greedy, stupid, reckless and depraved indifference to human life, resulting in the deaths of millions of people
– gross incompetence putting their national security at risk
– completely self-serving, lying as easily and casually as normal people breathe

It is easy to take pot shots and surmise about how he would neglect some areas of politics. Clearly, Trump could fail spectacularly. The reason people support him at this juncture, however, has to do with a belief that he intends to counter some of the decisions that have hurt the economy and destroyed jobs in recent years. Does not relate particularly to Donald having 3 wives and the rest of your blah, blah. In my view, Trump is the ONLY hope — OR — there is no hope as the US continues its march off a cliff.
Andrew Coyne: Trump is winning not in spite of his vices, but because of them http://www.montrealgazette.com/andrew+coyne+trump+winning+spite+vices+because+them/11784799/story.html?google_editors_picks=true Once, it might have been held against a candidate that he had no experience in politics or governing, had no serious policies, was unfamiliar with basic facts, slurred women and minority groups, issued public threats against those who crossed him, announced his intent to break the law once in office, celebrated and encouraged violence at his rallies, and generally carried on like a disturbed adolescent. But Trump has turned all of these into virtues. He is winning not in spite of these, but because of them.
So many worthless bastards from the BUSH era. A pollster producing fraudulent polls that would make
the Teflon Dan blush… The Mafia has a word for it’s members that seek unwanted publicity.. DOA
What about the “accomplishments” of Hillary, Obama, Cruz, Rubio? Kasich is the only GOP with a track record in actual governance, while Obama’s is abysmal, trying to twist the political culture to the left, like a socialist Gumby, to the taxpayers’ chagrin.
The American voter is signaling they are sick of professional politicians. For too long GOPers in Congress have sipped the good life and surrendered the voter to their self-interest. This resentment has been simmering to outrage for a long time; Trump seeks to boil the kettle.
Being POTUS means basically, bringing in the tools of experience one has, they begin what military terms as OJT (on job training) to learn and grow into the job, while able instantly to deal with timely and pressing issues. There is no POTUS school, except maybe the VPOTUS.
Trump brings success in business. Oh, right he’s a “failed” billionaire. What did Obama bring? A record of running with statist agitators with a nasty streak of partisanship and identity politics. No significant legislation, no participation in any national debate until he started his POTUS run. If these pro pop politicians are so smart, how come everything is so screwed up? Now the left is trying their act on Trump, where their radical socialistic views become “mainstream” so any retort is “extreme right wing,” so obviously racist, sexist and unintelligent. Can they continue to count on these false narratives courtesy of the 24/7 media slime cycle? I think not, but we will see. There is Fox, though Megyn Kelly does her best to stoke up a personal dislike of Trump that she lets affect her professionalism. I don’t see Trump turning turtle as Romney did in the debates, sideswiped effortlessly by Candy Crowley.
How ironic that Trump is not conservative enough for the GOP establishment and too conservative for the Dem establishment and unethical media.
Hopefully the first thing President Trump will understand is that governments can’t direct economies, they help with promoting civil society and ordered liberty, that is done through their efforts of the people. He understands that government must be limited, though he wanders off trail with his healthcare talk, but as I understand he essentially would privatize portable healthcare with some funding by government.
Then again, maybe he’ll get us all blown up. But, how much worse could he be than Obama, who oversees dangerous borrowing, authoritarian government with apparatchiks attacking Dem foes, and a blind spot a mile wide concerning Islamism, terrorism and the states that promote it, always blaming the victim, his countrymen, as the perpetrators, who wore too nice and too short a skirt and got assaulted.
How much worse could Hillary be than Obama is a better question. She witlessly allowed national secrets to be easily compromised (I wonder if intelligence operatives from China, et al routinely mine for traffic from high ranking politicians’ homes?). Anyone who says this is paranoid is hopelessly naïve in a world where espionage is routinely mixed with diplomacy. This woman, indifferent to her errors in judgment, who seems to suffer from chronic mendacity, with an ethos that would made Machiavelli hide his head in shame, would be a better choice as POTUS?
Well, those are the options, with Cruz at best having an outside jump shot. Which would you prefer?
I agree. I think Rand Paul is even more “anti-establishment” than Cruz but he (Cruz) is now the only conservative left in the ring and that’s a bridge too far for these cronies.
With those kinds of polling numbers among Republicans, it’s over. Short of some utterly spectacular disaster, Trump will get the nomination now. Every time someone drops out, he gains support far more than any of the others. Populist revolutions cannot happen in the Democrat party because of their corrupt system of super-delegates, but they can in the Republican, and here it is.
less than 40% voted for JustinTime. there are a lot of Canadian who are mortified at his actions and total lack of brain cells.
Shammy, you say it well. However…
Obama has trampled the constitution at every turn. Hillary is more diabolical than Bill.
But to think government does not direct the economy is somewhat naive. Do you think Rachel Notley is not affecting the economy? How about Wynne policies? Justin’s lack of support for the energy sector and threats of carbon taxes? Do you think the economy will be directed as a result?
So back to the U.S. of A. How is one prepared to be the POTUS? Serving in government? Well, see the previous paragraph for anecdotes.
To qualify to become the POTUS one must understand the constitution, believe in the constitution, and defend the constitution. After all, that’s the oath the victor must take. Anything less just gives us more of the same.
There is only one candidate that can remotely fulfill that oath.
compared to Obama?
He’s a lawyer with no briefs, a constitutional scholar with no recorded opinions, a law review editor with no papers, a college professor with no students, a senator with few votes and an executive who legislates with a pen and a phone.
I wonder sometimes if he knows who he is

I find it quite amusing that ones support for Trump is to contrast against Obama.
History will show Obama as the worst president ever. So that’s the standard?
How about setting expectations high and holding candidates to that? The best Trump has to offer when someone disagrees with him is to call them stupid.
Ya, things are looking up.
Clinton. They line up to kiss her hand and she will become nice and distribute goodies for good behavior.
In contrast to the liberal tactics being used by Megyn Kelly, Ted Cruz, John Kasich and Marco Rubio:
————-
On the Saturday broadcast of “Justice” on Fox News Channel, host Judge Jeanine Pirro responded to the protestors at GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s rallies, blasting them for attempting to stop free speech by interrupting rallies.
“Since when if you state an opinion are you responsible for someone else’s reaction? Since when if you verbally lean right, are you responsible for the left’s physical reaction? Since when do you have the right to interrupt my First Amendment right to listen to a candidate for the highest office in the land? This is America, not the Soviet Union,” Pirro stated. “This is America. You cannot prevent me from speaking or listening. You cannot censor speech. Free speech is guaranteed. It’s why our founding fathers made it their very first amendment to the law of the land. It’s what distinguishes us from communist countries and totalitarian regimes.” http://www.breitbart.com/video/2016/03/13/judge-jeanine-the-left-will-stop-at-nothing-to-prevent-free-speech/
Smitherenzes. “Do you think Rachel Notley is not affecting the economy?”
There is no doubt governments affect the economy. I said they can’t “direct” economies anywhere near the extent they give themselves credit, its levers too dynamic to control, but they can do a little good but more importantly a lot of harm. They use significant societal resources (half of GDP in EU nations), so their effects are unfortunately widespread, but their political goals lead to transactions of decline, with attendant loss of prosperity and liberty.
They help by facilitating prosperity using only limited government (fire, police, military, but not redundancies, useless and wasteful ministries like climate change or gender “issues,” or other such nonsense). They can also do serious damage to economies because of ideology, poor understanding of economics, and hostile to business anti-growth policies. They have potential to destroy economies – Zimbabwe, NK, and to a lesser but potentially similar effect, the EU, particularly Greece, with the final blows to Canada and US coming attractions – if the voter lets them in the case of democracies.
My point is it’s fallacy for government to think they can direct an economy to produce this many jobs, or products, or decide who winners and losers should be or what incomes should be. That is socialism that inevitably leads to totalitarianism and the obscene body counts we have seen with socialist/communist governments. Government has never created a job or any wealth without confiscating it elsewhere. The citizens set up of civil society and government, which only gains legitimacy through the people, not the other way around.
We are not a part of government, it’s a part of us. We did build that, and we decide what leadership we desire, and we can take it away because it serves at our discretion and favour. No government has ever taxed, spent and borrowed itself and the citizens into prosperity. Government by definition reduces wealth, so good government must always be limited government.
Statists have it backwards, they think business is evil and government virtuous. Neither is true but the reverse is more valid a conclusion imho. Governments that try to direct economies (think 5 year plans in the USSR & China) have consistently seen disastrous results, with elites doing well at the expense of the people, amid plunging standards of living, with the state controlling all public discussion. Sound familiar?
Eric Trump said that what his father hates most is stupidity. I get that.
“THE REAL anti-establishment, anti-crony candidate is Cruz – not Trump.”
For now Trump is the one that has shown he has the personal power to plot through the obstructionists. As I’ve said before, Cruz is the better candidate but, as can be seen in this GOP Establishment video, the system is too corrupted for Cruz to have a chance at success if he were elected.
Cruz will accomplish more for America under President Trump than if he himself were elected president. And he’s young enough to be President Cruz in 10 or 20 years.
These assholes aren’t the only power brokers worried about Trumps popularity… George Soros is not too happy about the prospect of a Trump Presidency either and has reportedly put up another 13 million for Hitlery… The Canadian Media machine hates Trump too and so does the Canadian Medias lispy actor portraying a PM, Trudozo the selfie taking clown… The Globalists are shitting themselves over Trump… How long before the Globalists Lee Harvey Mr. Trump… Go Trump!
Little Marco is FINISHED, he can’t win his own state.
Kasich has serious delusions. He’s popular is Ohio, big deal…..
Nice GOP commercial from the establishment, I’,m surprised they didn’t accuse Trump of having binders full of women…..funny, but its a commercial that the Dumbos might make, of, out of context remarks that The Donald has made about a small of handful of specific obnoxious leftist women, about 3 in total, including Rosie, baby.
Party of Stupid!
“But, how much worse could he be than Obama,…” As well turning the US into more of a socialist state. Actually Trump could not be worse than Obama. Even the incompetent Carter was less dangerous than Obama. Obama is not content to just implement more socialist policies, but to actually turn the US into a socialist state under the direction of George Soros, Alinsky and Ayers.
“…authoritarian government with apparatchiks attacking Dem foes…” Did you not mean Rep. foes?
The establishment of both parties is why the US is in the mess it is. May Trump win and may they go into the dustbin of history.
As far as character is concerned I would prefer either Cruz or Rubio, but Trump, if he follows through or can follow through, will do the most to shale up the rotten system.
national review fell off my reading list years ago.
Trump is a populist yes but he also has solid policies
and the establishment is trying to take him out.
that’s why he packs heat and wears a vest.
but a better comparison from history:
Trump is the new Andrew Jackson…
Ol’ Hickory took and beat up the old coastal Colonial establishment and championed the spirit of America…
–
and don’t tell me Cruz is an anti-establishment conservative – he’s a Trojan Horse.
he is hard wired into the Bush GOP establishment.
Cruz was an adviser to Bush http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/01/ted-cruz-2016-establishment-george-bush-213561
and until 2012, as liberal as you’d expect from a Harvard elitist:
As a law student at Harvard, he refused to study with anyone who hadn’t been an undergrad at Harvard, Princeton, or Yale. Says Damon Watson, one of Cruz’s law-school roommates: “He said he didn’t want anybody from ‘minor Ivies’ like Penn or Brown.”
Bonus: his wife worked for Condi Rice, the Club for Growth and Goldman Sachs.
I purged National Review just yesterday.
Trumpeteers very much dislike the comparisons of their hero with George Wallace (or Huey Long, or Lonesome Rhodes), but there is something to the analogy. In 1968, I had the opportunity to volunteer in one of Wallace’s campaign offices in Ohio. His grass-roots supporters in that state were very much the same sorts of people who were supporting Trump’s campaign there yesterday, people who saw themselves as powerless before elites who didn’t understand them, didn’t like them, scolded and patronized them, and ridiculed them for their patriotism and other backward attitudes. Like Trump, Wallace gave voice to concerns that other candidates seemed not to or to do in a dissembling manner.
Trump is a demagogue, but demagogues arise when large numbers of people have been alienated from normal politics. When no party is able to make room in the tent for them. they will either withdraw and pitch their own tent, or focus on burning down the tent.
The fine dining, service and martinis said it all for me.

Does not relate particularly to Donald having 3 wives and the rest of your blah, blah. In my view, Trump is the ONLY hope — OR — there is no hope as the US continues its march off a cliff.
Andrew Coyne: Trump is winning not in spite of his vices, but because of them
http://www.montrealgazette.com/andrew+coyne+trump+winning+spite+vices+because+them/11784799/story.html?google_editors_picks=true
Once, it might have been held against a candidate that he had no experience in politics or governing, had no serious policies, was unfamiliar with basic facts, slurred women and minority groups, issued public threats against those who crossed him, announced his intent to break the law once in office, celebrated and encouraged violence at his rallies, and generally carried on like a disturbed adolescent.
For those of you who think Trump is a new phenomenon:
http://www.nationalreview.com/article/432797/donald-trump-george-wallace-2016
compared to Obama?

It’s what distinguishes us from communist countries and totalitarian regimes.”

Cruz was an adviser to Bush
http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/01/ted-cruz-2016-establishment-george-bush-213561
and until 2012, as liberal as you’d expect from a Harvard elitist:
