Green Melts Steel

J.J. McCullough;

As the preferred party of the fringe and alienated, the Green Party of Canada has had a long and complicated relationship with the Truther community.
On the one hand, among the deranged subcultures of the extreme left, Truthers represent a constituency who are organized, energetic, and (in their own way) politically informed - precisely the sort of highly-motivated go-getters any self-respecting kook party would want onside.
On the other hand, their preferred cause is undeniably toxic from a PR perspective, championing, as it does, stomping on the graves of the nearly 3,000 souls slaughtered in New York and Washington by absolving guilt from the fundamentalist sadists who have repeatedly claimed responsibility.
The Green’s preferred solution to this dilemma, it seems, is to utilize the gifts of Truthers so long as they remain quiet and unseen, while simultaneously engaging in high-profile purges of those whose prominence crosses that thin line separating asset from liability.

  1. The real truth is that Global Warming and Climate Change are the biggist lie thats ever been perpatraited on the world and carried out by those watermellon eco-freakos(Green on outside red on inside)they want to CONTROL OUR LIVES

  2. It’s interesting that during the 2008 presidential election, the Truthers were quietly tolerated by the Democrats essentially as “useful idiots” because they squawked on endlessly about “Bush and Cheney”.
Once Obama was safely installed in the White House, the Truthers were quickly dumped.

  3. I don’t quite see how trying to get at the truth is “stomping on the graves of the nearly 3,000 souls slaughtered.” Ridiculing those who ask questions is one strategy for manipulating the masses.

  4. I am sure you’ve heard it before, but there is a subtle difference between “Ridiculing those who ask questions…” and ridiculing those who ask the same stupid questions over and over regardless of how many times they have already been answered.

  5. “……the Truthers were quickly dumped…..”
    Easy…to discredit the BIRTHERS……
The BIRTHERS are the logical result of the deliberate black hole of OBOLO’s past….
I must address the noise about the collapse of building 7…..not really that suspicious….tower 1 & 2 like #7 were in principle just upward extensions of what was basically 1 building. The seismic damage to the foundation/base doomed #7…it didn’t really collapse like the twin towers but fell into the common basement….

  6. Easy…to discredit the BIRTHERS……
Very true, but remember. This whole idea came from Hillary’s people.

    Agreed 100%!
From what I can gather there are so called “truthers” on each side of the political spectrum, with the majority of them being politically neutral.
For the rest it’s whatever they’re dear leader in power happens to be as to whether they ask questions or not.
I don’t believe the George Bush Jr. Administration was directly involved with 9/11. But I do recognize along with thousands of sworn experts from structural engineers, to retired intelligence personnel, to emergency eyewitness’s etcetera ……….that something in the “official story” is not true.
Whatever that truth may be the ridiculers have certainly buried it for their own political ideologies and lazy intellectual dishonesty.

  8. Excellent column by J.J. McCullough.

“..it’s hard to avoid viewing her actions as anything but a dog whistle endorsement to a certain faction of her partisan base.”

That was my first thought when I heard about May’s petition: that it’s a practical, and highly cynical, recruitment of human energy. The Lower Mainland in particular has a lot of people – more than most people might realize, I think – whose pot-addled leftism, when combined with a sense of ’empowerment’ by proxy that comes from having somewhat like-minded kooks elected to office at various levels of government, serves to ensconce their happily paranoid views about 9/11 conspiracy theories, and Bilderberg, etc., and makes them motivated and energetic about such topics. Elizabeth May’s call for a 9/11 commission makes (cynical, desperate) sense as “a kind of proper care and feeding of this valuable constituency”, as McCullough put it.
McCullough’s been around in Vancouver for years in the arts/music scene – including in East Van – so he definitely knows what he’s talking about. For the radical constituency that May is courting, workaday retail politics and real-world economics and the fine print of policy decisions, etc., are dull compared to the feeling that they and a select few understand, man, what’s really going on. May is clearly tapping into the energy of this long neglected constituency.
It’s not like they’ll be spouting their Truther beliefs door-to-door, but at least some of them (and like I said, it’s a surprisingly large constituency) will be grateful for her legitimization/ acknowledgement/ validation of their beliefs – a first, in federal party terms – and will become motivated campaign volunteers.

  9. Some of our MPs apparently have time on their hands, one thinks of the amorous (or were they?) duo. Like any good kindergarten teacher, Ms May has thought of a fun project for them to occupy their minds. They should throw in the JFK assassination to get more value for money.
And I for one would accept whatever this Ottawa committee had to say about these distant events, forgetting in a rush of patriotism that they could have no possible useful knowledge of those events upon which to base their conclusions.
Another plan might be this — ask for volunteers to look into this pressing matter, then drop those same people from all other committees. That might lead to some improvements all round.

  10. J.J. McCullough: the best hair in journalism!
EyeCrazy is putting together a petition for May to read in the House: that cats be allowed to be MPs. You might want to sign it.

  11. Well, I see some here took the bait, but Peter O’Donnell wins the “Stir The Pot” award for bringing up JFK. Brilliant.

  12. actually the structural design of #7 pretty much dictated how that sucker was going to come down. I told my SIL (a card carrying Conserative “truther” )when I read about it’s design, and subsequently read several articles about reports that stated the same. And yes you pointing out about the damage by seismic waves is relevant.

  13. I had an argument with a truther over how little aircraft wreckage was found anywhere and how because of that aircraft never actually hit the buildings.
The person was arguing that it was holograms (I kid you not) of aircraft hitting the buildings. I told that person, there is no wreckage to be found because aluminum shatters into grains of dust when it hits a solid object at high speed. There has been enough testing done to prove this. The Pentagon is probably the most reenforced building and the worst thing you could ever try and plow an aluminum framed aircraft into.
Aircraft hitting solid buildings + jet fuel + 110 x 2 buildings collapsing = very little recognizable debris left.

  14. Glad to see something from JJ on the site. I enjoy hearing his opinions on SUN on a regular basis. As for the Green’s apparent support of the truthers, why should we be surprised since the Green party has never seen a wacky idea that they didn’t like.
