That is higher than 130 currently fighting and the 80 who have returned from fighting abroad, that being the most recent CSIS numbers publicly quoted.
500 sounds like an estimate, the lower numbers would be the confirmed or identified ones. As they identify the others the official number will grow and so will the estimates as more are “inspired”.
Estimates will always be higher as not every foreign jihadi has a facebook page advertising what they are up to.
I’d wager there is a voice print record of all the monitored electronic communication.
One of the moderate(as in rejecting jihad) Muslims wrote to the local paper saying that only about 1 percent of Muslims would engage in violence against innocent civilians.
If true the potential jihadi pool is high, in Canada, it is 10,000.
This would explain why Western governments are so concerned about ISIS.
ISIS has now so many enemies in the West and the Middle-East, they’ll be the target of choice for some time.
Casualties will shrink their numbers faster than recruitment.

I propose a big, fat, expensive but oh-so-worthy government program to help Canadian jihadis and their families to do their sacred duties.
The program will include funding for a new Air Canada livery “72 Virgins Air”, with deep discounts on one-way, jihadi fares and group rates for the family.
If you can’t deport them, and you can’t strip them of their citizenship, oblige them with martyrdom.

Every time I hear about Canadian discovered fighting for ISIS they mostly come from Calgary. What is going on in Calgary anyway and why is it devolving into a hotbed of Muslim extremism.
