  1. ” Rumors true: I’m leaving CBC soon but entirely on own steam. Not part of sad cuts at Corp. No regrets. On to new adventures.
    #hw #cdnpoli ”
Of course not, Mr. Weston, it is just a coincidence.

The rest of them can also take solace in the fact that left-wing activists are in demand all around the internet, maybe a high-paying job at Huff-po will become available.
Oh, wait a minute, she doesn’t have any of our money to pay you, oh well.
The CBC could have been much more.
Unfortunately, they chose to champion an agenda rather than being a news source.
The CBC was/is the voice for socialist causes in Canada.
You want to block a rail line, give us a call. We will get your story out.
You want to complain about the Conservatives, we can hype better than anyone.
You got an idea about global warming, we’ve got a page for you.
Don’t worry about ‘facts’, we airbrush opinions into facts.
And we will bury anything that does not fit the agenda.
The CBC is on their way out, not many working Canadians will care.

  2. Toronto Sun, Tuesday, Apr. 29. Ezra Levant makes a good point.
    http://www.torontosun.com/2014/04/28/ban-on-christian-values
“Until the 1940s, Jews were banned from the professions in Canada. Not completely banned – that would be unseemly. But universities like McGill had quotas.”
“And once those few Jewish students graduated, they were blacklisted by many law firms and hospitals.”
Ezra points out that the action by the Law Society of Upper Canada against Trinity Western amounts to a rebirth of this old prejudice, except now it’s targeted to Christians who still adhere to their traditional moral code.
The purpose of a governing body for lawyers is to deal with those who prove less than competent at their profession. It is not to enforce ideological compliance — which is what the law society’s stance amounts to.
The decree by the LSUC cannot be allowed to hold in a free society. I haven’t checked but presumably the LSUC is governed by legislation, and if necessary the legislation should be changed to ensure that it sticks to its proper functions.
And if ideological tests were somehow deemed acceptable, any lawyer caught wearing a t-shirt featuring the murderous psychopathic scum Che Guevara should be instantly disbarred.

  3. Globe and Mail, Monday, Apr. 28. Konrad Yakabuski:
    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-debate/dont-cross-canadas-health-care-ayatollahs/article18218869/
“The truth is that Americans without health insurance often have access to better and more timely ‘free’ health-care than Canadians with government-provided coverage.”
“Community Health Centers provide preventive and ongoing care for 22 million patients a year, including illegal immigrants. They operate with federal, state and charitable grants, as well as donations from ordinary citizens.”
“Heaven forbid, however, that anyone suggest using idle operating rooms to bring in extra money by treating foreigners now and then. The health-care ayatollahs will try to silence you in a heartbeat.”
The leftists (falsely) criticize capitalism for putting “profits before people”, but they put “the system before people”.

  4. Globe and Mail, Monday, Apr. 28. Andre Picard:
    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health-and-fitness/health/the-cure-for-hepatitis-c-is-upon-us-but-at-a-costly-penny/article18224668/
“There is a revolution coming to the treatment of hepatitis C.”
“But here’s the catch: The new treatment costs a lot of money. Sovaldi sells for $1,000 a pill …”
“The hepatitis C treatment revolution will come, but it can’t come in the form of a bomb that destroys health-care budgets.”
In one sense this is another way of saying “the system before people”.
The problem is that a person might have spent his entire life paying taxes that go to treat others’ health issues. What is he to think if he is then denied treatment himself?
Leftists are always yapping about things that might destroy confidence in the public system. Nothing will do it faster than being denied treatment after you’ve paid and paid into it.

  5. The news channels are full of the story: Mr. Donald Sterling, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, has been banned from attending any game played by the team he owns, or having anything to do with its management; and the commissioner will recommend that the owners require him to sell the team.

Sterling has been tried and convicted in camera by the Commissioner…. he is guilty of racism, not publicly espousing racism, not of any crimes against black people, not of refusing to associate with black people such as his mistress, but of being an inner racist at heart. There is a name for this: it’s called Thoughtcrime. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thoughtcrime

I suppose the bottom line is that in future it will no longer be sufficient to keep your Thoughtcrime to yourself. As technology improves it will become easier and easier to record everything you say without your knowledge, and anyone who thinks he or she can profit from making your inner thoughts public will be able to do so. And as technology improves again, perhaps you won’t need to speak your thoughts: they can be recorded as you think them.
I’m not depressed in sympathy with Mr. Sterling. For I have none. But I am depressed that we move closer to the reality of legal punishment for Thoughtcrime.

  6. Toronto Sun, Tuesday, Apr. 29. A further sad commentary on the drug issue:
    http://www.torontosun.com/2014/04/28/milton-woman-who-fought-for-cancer-drug-dies
Ms. Fletcher died on Sunday. The drug in question, Avastin, was not reimbursed by the government, so friends and relatives raised funds themselves. It was not a cure but merely prolonged her life a few months.
Here is another example of a person who very likely paid taxes to the medicare system for years, but when she needed it most, it wasn’t there for her.
I would argue that the health care system should be entirely private. The argument that Canadians “need” medicare really means they would be better off with an insurance policy of some sort, not necessarily the government monopoly.
I’m not going to claim that a fully private system would instantly solve every problem and allow every person to have full access to every expensive drug they need. The arguments about cost-effectiveness apply equally to public and private. But individuals have more control when they can shop around. Charitable foundations could help cover high costs for drugs, surgery, etc. At least when your insurance company goes back on a contract, you have legal recourse. The only way to get government to act is to plead for an exception, which columnists such as Picard (earlier post) don’t like, and they have a point.
In a capitalist system, productivity is always rising due to the efforts of individuals discovering and sharing new knowledge. This enables the standard of living to continuously rise — a “racing torrent of progress”, to use Ayn Rand’s phrase. Catastrophic medical costs would eventually become more manageable. But it’s this very productivity for which the leftists condemn it, as they would rather be slave-drivers in Hell than free men and women in Heaven.
Under the bogged-down mixed economy system, productivity and growth stagnate, and if governments spend too much money and intervene too much, it can decline. This is not good for the citizens and especially not good for medical costs.
A major reason for drug expense is the amount of testing required by regulations. How much of these are truly necessary, I don’t know. This is another issue that needs to be addressed.

  7. Happy Birthday Mr. Prime Minister!
Of all the drivel I saw on CBC and other networks today–nobody wished our PM a Happy Birthday!! (April-30-1959)

  8. Today in History for April 30th : Hitler commits suicide; Vietnam war ends; George Washington takes oath of office; Louisiana purchase; Willie Nelson & Stephen Harper born.

  9. Globe and Mail, Monday, Apr. 28. Sometimes you wonder why a reputable newspaper would print a scummy letter to the editor. Seventh one down:
    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-debate/letters/april-28-second-thoughts-on-the-senate-and-other-letters-to-the-editor/article18232590/
[Following the Palestinian-Hamas peace pact, we get] “predictable rants from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about Hamas being a terrorist organization that wants to destroy Israel”.
That’s basically Hamas’s own words, so calling Israel’s rational reaction a “rant” says volumes about the writer’s bias.
[And the right-wing Netanyahu government is] “piling on extra demands like insisting the Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state”.
Again, the Netanyahu government has a grasp on reality that the letter writer appears to be missing. Isn’t this recognition an essential precondition to the peace process, not an “extra”?
One can debate the idea of a state dedicated to a religion, and even the merits of Zionism in particular. However, Saudi Arabia might be a good place to start, given that Mecca is for Muslims only. Note that this is much closer to “apartheid” than any such nonsense thrown at Israel.

  10. By the way, why does the date at the top of this page above “Reader Tips” say April 27 rather than May 1?

  11. “legal punishment for Thoughtcrime.”
Only whites can commit thoughtcrime. If Sterling had been black he could have said anything he wanted without repercussion. He just forgot that he was a cracker.

  12. If any person of color had said the same comments about any race, especially whites, then it would be ‘high-fives’ all around. The MSM knows that most lefties are hypocrites, and plays on that to get more viewers. Racism is a one way street if you’re white.

  13. William Tell Overture, eh?

Scandalous allegations of ‘free’ cleaning at the homes of Liberal cabinet ministers and government employees also emerged in the OPP corruption probe.
The shocking claims were contained in court transcripts from a preliminary hearing for one government official involved in the kickback scam.”

  15. For any news org interested in hiring a journo with zero credibility, one who will say anything and change his positions, all for a paycheque, then Weston’s your man.
I still love reading this column from Weston from time-to-time, one that, according to the date stamp, was one of the last he penned for Sun Media on the topic of the CBC, attacking the state broadcaster’s unquenchable thirst for taxpayer dollars…. before he would then add himself to its payroll.

  16. “As a kid living in Manitoba I thought [The William Tell Overture] was ‘THE LONE RANGER & TONTOS’ invitational music, to catch the baddies!”
Al Feldstein, who headed up MAD magazine for nearly three decades, has just died at 88 and it seems fitting here to remember a cartoon from one of Dave Berg’s “The Lighter Side” strips.
Two small kids are watching a classical concert on TV. The conductor announces, “Now, children, we’re going to play The William Tell Overture. You know, it’s considered very adult and mature to be able to listen to this piece without thinking about the Lone Ranger.”
Just as the orchestra begins to play, Dad enters the room, dressed in his undershirt and clutching a can of beer.
Hearing the music, he yells, “Hi-Ho, Silver!”

“20 Years of Winter Cooling Defy Global Warming Claims”
“Winter temperatures throughout the United States are in a 20-year cooling trend, defying alarmist global warming predictions and debunking claims that warmer winters are causing environmental catastrophe.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data, presented by the International Climate and Environmental Change Assessment Project, reveal this winter’s exceptionally cold winter was merely the continuation of a long-term cooling trend. The trend line for the past 20 years shows more than two degrees Fahrenheit of cooling in U.S. winter temperatures since 1995.
The two decades of cooling temperatures defy alarmist assertions that global warming is causing warmer winters.”

“The removals, which were first reported on Thursday night, took place last Saturday, 48 hours before government demolition teams razed a Protestant church in the same city.
Wenzhou’s Sanjiang church became a symbol of resistance to the Communist Party’s draconian religious policies in early April. Thousands of Christians formed a human shield around the place of worship after plans to demolish it were announced but the building was eventually levelled on Monday evening.”

For more than a year, Walmsley said, public and press “have lived in purgatory, with the public simply not prepared to believe the word of reporters who have viewed material related to the mayor’s behaviour.” The story needed irrefutable proof, he said in an email Thursday, and “the proof was the images and the only way to get the images was to pay for them.”

  23. A billion a year for the opinions of progressives.
We cannot starve them quick enough.
The CBC has this article up.
” Report of 1,000 murdered or missing aboriginal women spurs calls for inquiry ”
They got the number from an APTN article.
The APTN article is from an anonymous source. I won’t link to either, they are easy to find and the filter seems to relish posts with multiple links.
The CBC does not link to the article that they based their story on.
However, this article from the CBC casts doubts on the old 600 figure. They rarely allow it in their comment section.
Today they did. Woo Hoo, likely because they did not bother to read the article before linking.

The CBC is actively encouraging unrest and the resulting violence to discredit the gov’t.
They were not the ONLY network to escape the wrath of the fracking protesters in NB last summer because of blind luck.
They escaped because of their ” journalism ” which only sees their agenda.
