This Is Not Your Grandma’s Humane Society

First they came for the carriage horses.

I have been writing and reading about the Central Park Horses ever since I became aware of the massive, well-funded and highly organized effort on the part of people who call themselves animal rights advocates (and who the media call animal rights advocates) and the political and bureaucratic power structures of New York City to ban the Central Park Horses from Central Park and New York City, and exile them to the rumored but so far largely mythical “rescue farms” waiting to take in all 200 of them.
The horses have been in the park since 1858 and are loved all over the world, but it seems there is a pervasive idea in urban New York City that their lives are grim, filled with too much work, abuse and dangerous traffic. That their time is come, the mayor says the discussion “is over,” no point in any more. Apparently, the mayor of New York City has more power than I thought mayors generally have. The Mayor and City Council President and a broad array of activists have made it a major priority of the new administration to get rid of the horses, above just about everything else.
This is evolving into one more well-meaning tragedy visited upon animals by people who believe they know what is best for them. No one who knows anything about horses believes these active and engaged working animals will be alive for very long, this is a campaign to kill and banish animals so that they can be rescued from meaningful work and connection with human beings.

  1. Its more corrupt than that. The barns that house the horses, heritage all that stuff. that’s what its about developing that property near central park. the left doesn’t give a f**k about animals they are just props.

  2. Animals were created to serve man. That’s their purpose. This is just
another attempt to pervert God’s purpose for His creation by those who
    wish to assume His role.
This has been going on since the Garden. Nothing new, including the people
too Biblically illiterate to realize where this originates.

  3. De Blasio’s donors want the rights to develop the land where the carriage houses and barns are at. It is several acres of land in Manhaatan near Central Park. 200 dead horses and a few hundred lost jobs will not stop them.
Just another reason to never visit NYC.

  4. C’mon, as soon as you bring in the old ‘god created this and that for this and that’ you enter the realm of unicorn. You may be on the good-guys team, but you are still spouting fantasy. I know that the concept of a creator is held strongly by many, but that is not evidence that there is a omnipotent magician who can create stuff out of empty space. So, best you try to concentrate on the rights and wrongs and motivations that people hold here in the real world.
We will never win another election by flogging social or spiritual issues. Those are lost arguments. Abortion, Gayness, Pot …. etc … all won by the left, so we must let those issues go at least for now. We must stick you the economy, security, immigration (slow it down), infrastructure and jobs …. we can win on all of those because the left doesn’t know anything about that stuff.

  5. ” we can win on all of those because the left doesn’t know anything about that stuff.”
Yeah, I can see you’re winning. One step foreward and two back…heh

  6. Now we have your OPINION! Sorry for the shout but many times you present your opinion as fact.
Try my opinion on this; could it just be the ongoing difficulties for humankind is the necessity for evolutionary pressures for the development of civilization is impeded by “vested interests”?
Might all of the so-called human tragedies be the necessary steps to move the evolutionary process beyond self interest and control of the existing vested interests. I do not know! But have seemed to come to this conclusion over the decades. Also; please wait for it and start your rant when you finish reading.
Is it possible there is an evolutionary cultural benefit enhanced by the ongoing development of human understanding of the physical and psychologically development of some developed cultures.
    Just wondering if you have any facts stradivariuos or possibly an opinion for a change. Cheers;

  7. Well, what do you expect from a city that elected an out-and-out Communist as mayor? Moonbeams?

  8. And the poor horses will be shipped off to a PETA death camp, er, ‘shelter’. Hey, isn’t this all pretty much what happened to the poor nag in Orwell’s “Animal Farm?” Oh wait, they shipped him off to the glue factory.

  9. The horse farm isn’t mythical, Kate. It’s the Cotroni Farms site in Quebec.
    /very, very old news reference

  10. It’s hard to feel sorry for New York, they knew what they were getting when they elected this radial left wing nut ball and he’s living down to everything we could expect from him. And all this in only his first few weeks of power one can only imagine what other hell he’ll bring to N.Y. by the time his reign is over.

  11. It’s happening for the same reason all the other BS is: people who know better are too lazy/too chicken to take any real action to stop it.

  12. Andy…Obviously you didn’t read the story because the author used that statement…not Kate. And if you believe one farm or a few are going to take in 200 horses you are as bad as the idiots (led by the moron Mayor) who think its a good idea to get rid of the horse drawn carriages because it’s mean to the horses.
But based on a number of your comments on the site you are an “elite” who knows much better than us peons about these things.

  13. Big mistake to consider these freaks as concerned with animal welfare. I thinks it’s more about depriving some humans pleasure from carriage rides – you know, the ” haves ” , who the left bear nothing but hatred for. After all, do these people have any concern for wild animals? I don’t see them conducting wild animal rescue to help crippled or ailing wild animals.
For the radical left ” the issue ” they publicly sell is never the issue they truly wish to pursue. What thy proclaim to the public is a bs marketing line.

  14. So not only are pro second amendment, pro life, and generally conservative people not welcome in the lefty fascist State of New York, neither are horses… sounds about right. The tolerant left? LOL! New Yorkers vote for these intolerant maggots so I guess this is want they want… Bye bye America, it was great knowing ya.

  15. Always and forever FOLLOW THE MONEY. This has NOTHING to do with animal welfare and EVERYTHING to do with real estate high rise “development” of the property where the horse barns are in Manhattan. A major NYC developer has been lobbying to “get rid of the horses” for more than a decade … he donated millions the recent campaigns of DeBlasio and his commie fellow travelers … and now DeBlasio will be ‘thanking’ him by getting rid of the horses.
Like I said, left right or center, in politics ALWAYS follow the money. Endless delays to the Keystone Pipeline? … FOLLOW THE MONEY > Santa Fe Railway, owned by Berkshire-Hathaway = owned by Warren Buffett, major donor ro Obungler’s Dumbocrats, is making zillions delivering oil by train … Buffett doesn’t own any pipelines, but he’s #1 in North America for trains, so oil will continue moving by train. This entire post is a matter of public record such as The Wall Street Journal, not some sort of conspiracy theory.
Tattoo this on your foreheads > FOLLOW THE MONEY!

  16. Property value, political position, for the good of the animals….much talk that hides the desire to kill these animals. No self respecting Commie would go for a ride around the park….therefore….kill all of the horses, they are a sign of the rich and need to be destroyed. Poor horses.

  17. You speak of “one more well-meaning tragedy visited upon animals”; but why
well-meaning? Green kills; greens kill. And they know what they are doing.
Just think back to the falling polar bears video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxis7Y1ikIQ – produced by sadistic creeps for sadistic creeps.

  18. Teams of unemployed college grads could pull the carriages, the more Arts PHD’s the better, it would be a good use of credential power if they can’t use horsepower.

  19. That’s a well done video. I think the producers should have won a free trip to Ft. McMurray. Including field trip with a unarmed Hollywood “expert” guide sponsored by Coke. They deserve it and it’s the least we can do to show our appreciation.

  20. That was a joke, Sporty. And seeing as you’re a youngster I’m guessing, in the (IIRC) late ’70s the Cotroni Montreal Mafia family were involved in a scandal about selling horse meat to restaurants as beef. Aislan had a cartoon about it that I couldn’t find online with a Shriner and his wife at a fancy restaurant saying, “The cheval mort à la Cotroni looks good, dear” as the scandal broke at the same time as the Shriners were visiting Montreal.
