It’s easy to revel in the schadenfreude, but repeating the measurements of the Mawson expedition 100 years later is a worthwhile scientific endeavour. The danger that they are in is real; it’s windier than Saskatchewan there.

I agree – no matter the cost. The measurements in 2 points of time (100 years apart), on a planet billions of years old, is extremely scientifically meaningful.

The schadenfreude is something we should all savor as Gaia has outdone herself this year. Having to deal with the short dark days of winter here in Canada whereas these “climate” scientists are basking in the Antarctic summer makes me very annoyed.
CAGW, being a religion, not a science, will result in its adherents never giving up their faith regardless of how idiotic their “scientific” predictions become. Right now we’re in the analogous phase of the Catholic church piling epicycle upon epicycle to support the dogma that the sun rotates around the earth. It wouldn’t surprise me if Trenbeth were to seriously state that this is a prime example of his “missing heat” and that it was anthropogenic CO2 that forced all of the heat in the water around the ship to desert the upper levels of the ocean and head for the depths. Unlike the Catholic church which decided that empirical evidence over-ruled dogma, watermelons will never give up their religion and look for many more cruises to Antarctica to study the disastrous effects of “global warming” which “are far worse than we thought”.
So, lets all hope that Gaia isn’t finished with them yet and that a major Antarctic storm will blow for the next week or two. There’s likely a lot of potential Darwin awards winners in that bunch. What these watermelons have to worry about the most is not the weather but the mood of the Russian crew once they’ve drank the last drop of vodka on that ship.
The one disturbing thing in this whole picture is the presence of Chicoms far away from their home base. Presumably they’re interested in scrapping the century long prohibition against settlement and industrialization of Antarctica. However, I’m sure Greenpeace will sail south in order to storm any potential Chicom oil platforms to unfurl massive banners protesting the despoilation of the Antarctic. OTOH, the Chicom’s reasons for settling Antarctica much be far more mundane – a place to send their 20+ million young horny males who will be forced to deal with more urgent life problems than the inability to get a date.
It will be interesting to know the public reaction output reaction of the intrepid “scientists” should they survive this ice-capade.

Repeating old measurements and replicating old experiments is a valid part of science. They may have been expecting different results, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worthwhile science.
It might be worthwhile if the work is done competently. Will it be? And which gaps in knowledge will it fill in?
Low-information TV viewers may think that nothing has been done in Antarctica since 1913 but we know
that the opposite is true. What I see is a “Professor of Climate Change” conducting a PR exercise with some
tourists, and dragging – a few biologists? along for the fun.

According to one recent story the Chinese vessel itself is stuck in the ice, which would end the possibility of
helicopter rescue. Apparently the idea was to fly the Shokalovsky’s passengers to the Chinese vessel by air,
and then have the Chinese vessel move into open water and rendezvous with the Aurora Australis.
But do not fear – the Yanks are coming! Or may be coming, in the form of a serious icebreaker. If it were up to
me I might just tell the Chris Turney to go freeze in H*ll; i.e. leave him where he is.
And how much fossil fuel will be burnt up before these mannikins are saved? It is ironic that a Chinese
vessel would be involved in a rescue attempt, given the Chinese enthusiasm for air pollution.

Let there be no doubt, the mission was to document and record scientific changes in Antarctica and to broadcast that to the world. Most scientific missions don’t have a dedicated media team, but this one named a staff of five journalists. There is a journalist and a documentary maker from the Guardian as well as a senior producer from the Science Unit at the BBC world service. (See the media list.) If they’d discovered less sea ice, fewer penguins, or big cracks, we know the images would be all over the mass media and it would be evidence for “climate change”.
But with the MV Akademik Shokalskiy trapped by thick sea ice, the mission apparently is to call it a tourist boat. The BBC now tell us the mission was “to follow the route explorer Douglas Mawson travelled a century ago”. Don’t mention the climate. (Search for the word “climate” on the BBC story for example…). If there is any doubt this was a climate science crusade read about it here: SpiritofMawson –The Science Case. It tells us the full message of doom including that they are studying an ice sheet that would raise global sea levels by 52m (!) if it melted. It doesn’t tell us that there is no sign that could happen. The site doesn’t mention that temperatures on Antarctica have cooled in the last 30 years, nor that sea ice has increased to record highs. [This from the article by Jo Nova is probably closer to the truth]
And somehow, even tho the activists are tweeting endlessly, these 5 journalists are unable to provide the world with accurate and timely updates of the situation.

Ice moves with the wind, so such a change is not surprising. We were in a 1100 Class icebreaker headed around Pt Barrows, had we been 2 hrs later the ice sheet coming from Siberia would have blocked the passage and we would have to turn around and head back to the Eastern Arctic and Panama canal to get home to Victoria. A change in the wind could possibly change everything and free the vessel.
