Al Gore will be so disappointed. Mother Gaia has let him down once again.

where would you want to be stuck, icefloe or aeroporto?
They sure are packing them in down south…
Reminds me of that age old question – if you had limited resources, what would you rather save:
1) Stupid whales
2) Stupid humans
The whales, of course.
Further proof that all that CO2 trapped heat is sinking to the bottom of the ocean. By the way, those aren’t volcanoes that scientists recently discovered in Antarctica; they are heat drains warming earth’s core to millions of degrees. Now where’s MY global warming research grant and Nobel peace prize?
The LS media are carefully avoiding the fact that it’s the peak of Summer in Antarctica.
I was kinda hopin’ this would end up as Franklin Expedition, Part Deux.
It’s easy to revel in the schadenfreude, but repeating the measurements of the Mawson expedition 100 years later is a worthwhile scientific endeavour. The danger that they are in is real; it’s windier than Saskatchewan there.
“but repeating the measurements of the Mawson expedition 100 years later is a worthwhile scientific endeavour”
I agree – no matter the cost. The measurements in 2 points of time (100 years apart), on a planet billions of years old, is extremely scientifically meaningful.
Do you thing that Mawson would have been stupid enough to go on his expedition if he had access to satellite data?
It will be interesting if this goes on a bit to see the cracks apear amidsr the warmies. It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
Given the weather the helicopter route is looking doubtful.
Two weeks of this, with summer drawinf to a close and fresh food, much less vegan food, running out and the tweets will be fascinating.
While I hope all the nitwits survive it would be grand if the “winning ice” kept them locked in for, say, three months.
If everyone idles their car for a few extra minutes tomorrow morning, the ice may break up. Act locally, think globally.
In the spirit of christmas , I hope the ship gets crushed and they have to resort to cannibalism to survive. Maybe run out of food and fuel with bad weather ruling out rescue of any kind. Frozen toilets, burning anything and everything to try and stay warm , the sound of crushing steel, weather forecast for at least 4 more weeks of 40 below and high winds. Movie coming out in 2015 as told by the only survivor, the skinny kid no one wanted to eat. The movie could be called “Ship for brains” or even “Murder IPCC”. Imagine Al Gore in a leading role and how he fed 70 people for a week on his frozen corpse. Suzuki as the skinny kid (good makeup)who was just too ugly to eat. This has blockbuster written all over it. If the next Icebreaker fails and the weather stays bad for at least 4 more weeks we will make Hollywood very very happy. Remember that you heard it on SDA first. All royalties go to Kate and Joe (for his cross Canada quest) Mohlner.

The schadenfreude is something we should all savor as Gaia has outdone herself this year. Having to deal with the short dark days of winter here in Canada whereas these “climate” scientists are basking in the Antarctic summer makes me very annoyed.
CAGW, being a religion, not a science, will result in its adherents never giving up their faith regardless of how idiotic their “scientific” predictions become. Right now we’re in the analogous phase of the Catholic church piling epicycle upon epicycle to support the dogma that the sun rotates around the earth. It wouldn’t surprise me if Trenbeth were to seriously state that this is a prime example of his “missing heat” and that it was anthropogenic CO2 that forced all of the heat in the water around the ship to desert the upper levels of the ocean and head for the depths. Unlike the Catholic church which decided that empirical evidence over-ruled dogma, watermelons will never give up their religion and look for many more cruises to Antarctica to study the disastrous effects of “global warming” which “are far worse than we thought”.
So, lets all hope that Gaia isn’t finished with them yet and that a major Antarctic storm will blow for the next week or two. There’s likely a lot of potential Darwin awards winners in that bunch. What these watermelons have to worry about the most is not the weather but the mood of the Russian crew once they’ve drank the last drop of vodka on that ship.
The one disturbing thing in this whole picture is the presence of Chicoms far away from their home base. Presumably they’re interested in scrapping the century long prohibition against settlement and industrialization of Antarctica. However, I’m sure Greenpeace will sail south in order to storm any potential Chicom oil platforms to unfurl massive banners protesting the despoilation of the Antarctic. OTOH, the Chicom’s reasons for settling Antarctica much be far more mundane – a place to send their 20+ million young horny males who will be forced to deal with more urgent life problems than the inability to get a date.
It will be interesting to know the public reaction output reaction of the intrepid “scientists” should they survive this ice-capade.
DO GW scientists pray?

Loki, you may not realize how prescient your comment was:
“…Chris Turney, a professor of climate change at Australia’s University of New South Wales, said it was “silly” to suggest he and 73 others aboard the MV Akademic Shokalskiy were trapped in ice they’d sought to prove had melted. He remained adamant that sea ice is melting, even as the boat remained trapped in frozen seas.“We were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”- Professor Chris Turney, leader of trapped expedition”We’re stuck in our own experiment,” the Australasian Antarctic Expedition said in a statement. We came to Antarctica to study how one of the biggest icebergs in the world has altered the system by trapping ice. We … are now ourselves trapped by ice surrounding our ship.”Sea ice is disappearing due to climate change, but here ice is building up,” the Australasian Antarctic Expedition said in a statement.Turney later told FoxNews.com the ice surrounding his ship is old, rather than recently formed, and likely from a particular 75 mile-long iceberg that broke apart three years ago. Climate change may have prompted the iceberg to shatter and float into the previously open sea where the mostly Australian team finds itself stranded, Turney said.“The ice was swept across to this area by the South-East wind, its pieces creating a knock-on domino effect,” Turney told FoxNews.com, speaking from a tent erected on the stranded ship’s top deck. “We were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”…”
Thanks wallyj!
I’m on it – nice to know we all can contribute in some small way to these idiots’ well-being.
They are just drifting further into the ice. Shut up! These are scientists and a former Vice President you are mocking. Heathen.
I cannot stop laughing and nominate peterj as thread winner.
Turney and the media should take some time to explain what ice and snow are. Anyone under 20 living south of the Arctic Circle can’t remember ever seeing the stuff.
The story should read “Russia and China rescue invaluable biological weapons from Antarctic ocean”.
Notice that the enemy’s of western civilization are the ones quickly airlifting them back into civilization to be re-established as enemy insurgents.
Turney’s claim that they are trapped in debris from an old broken-up iceberg is ridiculous. The photo shows the icefield is much too uniform to be that. Does he think the “bergy bits” all go through a sieve to be sized?
And these are the same people who would shake their heads and roll their eyes and tell you how stupid Franklin was.
∞² comments reminded me of an old MIL-lawyer joke which has been amended for this current Antarctic event. QUESTION: If a BBC media darling and an Australian “climate” researcher were both drowning or freezing to death in the Antarctic sea ice, and you could only save one, would you A) read a book or B) go to a movie?
I hope they get out, but I hope they suffer first … of course with no bodily harm. What I hope suffers the most is any credibility they ever had. Yet, MSM is bastardizing the facts of this story to reduce damage to the CAGW mantra.

Getting strange tweets out of Antarctica…..”just going out on the ice for awhile”, “for Gods sake, look after our people”, “who put the lattes in lead soldered tins!?”….stuff like that all morning.
If there’s an ice breaker only ten miles away, and the ice is solid, the solution is obvious: start walking!
And you measure salinity and deep-ocean temperature via satellite… How, exactly?
Repeating old measurements and replicating old experiments is a valid part of science. They may have been expecting different results, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worthwhile science.
It might be worthwhile if the work is done competently. Will it be? And which gaps in knowledge will it fill in?
Low-information TV viewers may think that nothing has been done in Antarctica since 1913 but we know
that the opposite is true. What I see is a “Professor of Climate Change” conducting a PR exercise with some
tourists, and dragging – a few biologists? along for the fun.
Thanks,peterj! Excellent! 😉
The intrepid explorers can eat each other if they want, but touch ONE of them damned cute little penguins and I’m calling PETA.
Every movement needs it’s martyrs, Turney and company should think about that.
As it stand now, they’ll be forgotten in two weeks, but we STILL remember Franklin!
According to one recent story the Chinese vessel itself is stuck in the ice, which would end the possibility of
helicopter rescue. Apparently the idea was to fly the Shokalovsky’s passengers to the Chinese vessel by air,
and then have the Chinese vessel move into open water and rendezvous with the Aurora Australis.
But do not fear – the Yanks are coming! Or may be coming, in the form of a serious icebreaker. If it were up to
me I might just tell the Chris Turney to go freeze in H*ll; i.e. leave him where he is.
And how much fossil fuel will be burnt up before these mannikins are saved? It is ironic that a Chinese
vessel would be involved in a rescue attempt, given the Chinese enthusiasm for air pollution.
Read a movie or go to a movie? I’d see if I could find the movie Scott of the Antarctic and watch
that. Then I would really feel Turney’s pain.
Whos is Sousa?
Pardon me…who is De Souza?
Never heard of him….must be another self important media twit.

Let there be no doubt, the mission was to document and record scientific changes in Antarctica and to broadcast that to the world. Most scientific missions don’t have a dedicated media team, but this one named a staff of five journalists. There is a journalist and a documentary maker from the Guardian as well as a senior producer from the Science Unit at the BBC world service. (See the media list.) If they’d discovered less sea ice, fewer penguins, or big cracks, we know the images would be all over the mass media and it would be evidence for “climate change”.
But with the MV Akademik Shokalskiy trapped by thick sea ice, the mission apparently is to call it a tourist boat. The BBC now tell us the mission was “to follow the route explorer Douglas Mawson travelled a century ago”. Don’t mention the climate. (Search for the word “climate” on the BBC story for example…). If there is any doubt this was a climate science crusade read about it here: SpiritofMawson –The Science Case. It tells us the full message of doom including that they are studying an ice sheet that would raise global sea levels by 52m (!) if it melted. It doesn’t tell us that there is no sign that could happen. The site doesn’t mention that temperatures on Antarctica have cooled in the last 30 years, nor that sea ice has increased to record highs. [This from the article by Jo Nova is probably closer to the truth]
And somehow, even tho the activists are tweeting endlessly, these 5 journalists are unable to provide the world with accurate and timely updates of the situation.
Sure speaks to their agenda, conflicting with their reality.

Here’s actual coverage of Mawson’s expedition when it arrived 100 years ago.

Strange, wouldn’t that one little observation alone discredit their global warming meme? http://bit.ly/1bApeY7
Ice moves with the wind, so such a change is not surprising. We were in a 1100 Class icebreaker headed around Pt Barrows, had we been 2 hrs later the ice sheet coming from Siberia would have blocked the passage and we would have to turn around and head back to the Eastern Arctic and Panama canal to get home to Victoria. A change in the wind could possibly change everything and free the vessel.
