  1. Paying for information that a left wing conspiracy fantasist like Greenwald has in his possession?
    Just a few bucks.
Embarrassing the Harper government in any way possible?
    Priceless.
CBC and its taxpayer credit card. Don’t leave home without it.

  2. With the CBC losing HNC revenue and the PMO refusing to make up the shortfall, look for this chequebook journalism to increase as getting dirt on the CPC is imperative.
The CPC is no longer an ideological foe for the CBC but an existential threat. The next two years will be a fight to the death, welcome to Thunder Dome…

  3. You people apparently think that the CBC should reflect the views of the “hand that feeds” it.
So much for press freedom. And I thought the people of Canada paid.
And the fact that you are not angered by our government hosting U.S. spooks to spy on G20 members & canadians is a sign that privacy is not really a concern.

The NSA versus “Issue-Based Extremists” Posted on November 28, 2013 by emptywheel
The CBC has a Snowden-based story about how the NSA helped Canada’s Communications Security Establishment Canada in advance of and during the G20 held in Toronto in 2010. That isn’t all that surprising. As the story notes, it’s consistent with other stories of NSA spying surrounding international diplomatic meetings.
But the story does note that the Snowden documents make it clear there was no specific al Qaeda threat. Instead, the “threat” to the meeting came from “issue-based extremists.” Much of the secret G20 document is devoted to security details at the summit, although it notes:
“The intelligence community assesses there is no specific, credible information that al-Qa’ida or other Islamic extremists are targeting” the event. No matter. The NSA warns the more likely security threat would come from “issue-based extremists” conducting acts of vandalism. –

So the 1.2 Billion & the imaginary laws are to protect the nation from people blowing bubbles.

  4. Alistair MacDonald @macdonaldajm
Clarifying, @cbc tells me it paid @ggreenwald as freelancer not paid for access to NSA documents

  5. Clarifying, @dizzy tells me it paid @thehooker as freelancer not paid for access to piece of tail.
Fixed it for ya, diz. (hypothetically speaking, of course)

  6. Ideally, the CBC would not exist but if it must, then by all means help Snowden in every way possible. Spend ALL of the money to this end.

  7. “And the fact that you are not angered by our government hosting U.S. spooks to spy on G20 members & canadians is a sign that privacy is not really a concern.”
You and CBC has something in common: hyperbole and innuendo.
    1. Our government “spying” on foreigners shouldn’t concern Canadians one iota. On the contrary, we should be concerned if our government doesn’t “spy” on them.
    2. Any proof that our government hosted “U.S. spooks to spy on” Canadians? Didn’t think so.

  8. Apologies!
Some poor editing on my part. That should have read: “You and CBC HAVE something in common.”
    Mea culpa!

  9. @Dizzy….I’m all for freedom of the press. I am still awaiting the in depth CBC report on Jean Chretien’s shenanigans during his reign. Shawinigate etc. Also waiting to see if they’ve found out where the Liberal Government of the day “lost” 1 billion dollars of HRDC money.
Yeah, the CBC is like a dog on a bone over 90G’s that has been paid back(frankly I don’t care how or who paid it as long as it was) but I haven’t seen or heard of anyone involved in the LPC while in government under Chretien and Martin who was fired, charged with theft or convicted of fraud. Yet, there was plenty of it.
I fear I – and every other Canadian living now – will be long dead before the CBC does any thorough investigating of the thievery of the Chretien government.
