Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Assuming they would be able to successfully take over, I wonder if the MB/AQ types would attempt to level the Pyramids, like with what the Taliban did with those Buddhist things carved into the side of mountains in AFghanistan. Would be quite an undertaking.
Wonder if the CBC thinks this insignificant incident is worth reporting?
Not just Muslims have destroyed antiquities. The Communist have been particularly good at it. Cambodia. Laos, Burma and let us not forget Mao in China.
I concluded a long time ago that most of the religious upheaval in the ME is based in economics. People in Egypt cannot feed themselves. Government does not have the resources to deal with it. Islam in some cases can care for people and are the only alternative. The Muslim Brotherhood gained traction in Sadat’s time when he tried to shift the countries hiring policy to a qualification basis rather than a waiting list of applicants. Some had been on the ‘list’ for 7 – 8 years and were having their spots taken by more qualified people. The protests led to many being imprisoned and radical Islamist took over. Many suspect it was the Brotherhood who had Sadat shot.
I think many westerners take comfort in writing Muslims off as savages. I think we all would become savages if we could not feed our families. I am not an apologist for Islam simply trying to understand. Once incorporated into an ideology breaking free can be difficult. I have little doubt that Islam’s long term objective is world domination.
Sid, I do believe that at least one of the contending groups in Egypt made noises about doing exactly that after the Morsi government took power. Unfortunately I have no link, just the memory of the news item.
A war between a 7th century and 21st century civilization is going on, and many political and religious leaders in the west have not yet figured this out, especially the leftist ones that hate liberal democratic capitalism even more than they might fear radical Islam.
Everyone’s long term objective is world domination. If your ideas (including the idea of not seeking world domination) don’t dominate, someone else’s will. We all have to choose which ideas we want dominant, or choose to just leave it up to someone else’s. The latter course seems initially benign, but if there aren’t enough of us choosing to support ideas that we think are good, we leave the field open for those pushing ideas we will think bad.
The current occupant of the White House seem to be more than a teflon coated.
The way he operates, is throw troubles into the out. Then sits on it for a period as if nothing happened.
The mass media will play pretend upset, run a little interference (they teach this in the school of “journalism” you know).
As time will pass, things get back to normal.
Then it becomes old news.
There is nothing new to see.
And everything is well with the world.
Just like magic.
Sorry, wrong place.
Muslims and communists have to destroy all other religions and ideologies because what they believe in cannot compete with anything else in the marketplace of ideas and they know it. Hence their need to destroy religious symbols and suppress freedom of speech and worship.
I just realized that islam may be an acronym for …
Ignorant
Stupid
Liars
And
Murderers
Egypt is murdering it’s golden goose.
Instead of tourists coming to view the magnificence of Egypt’s past, they will be lamenting it’s demise at the hands of it’s heirs and go somewhere else to spend their money. How truly sad.
If I said what I really want to say about these idiots I would be banned from here for life.
I believe a lot of the leftists have figured it out, but because they don’t like how the 21st century has turned out they are trying to harness the 7th century’s forces to destroy it so they can put up their own form of barbarism in its place. If they succeed, they will find they are not actually as clever as they think and they will be overcome by the evil they will have unleashed.
Yup. I call it the Unseen war. We see flare up with terrorists acts once in a while or civil wars. In the ground part of this conflict. Though the real battle is Ideological. From soup companies becoming halal, or foot baths in schools.
From mosques replacing churches to mosques in schools.
The attitudes toward Women. To the submission of our Doctors to the idea of mutation of Women’s parts.
It is a secret war of infiltration using Western law to undermine Judeo-Christin culture.

Everything pre-Islamic is pagan and evil to these guys. Even the minimal grudging respect theoretically accorded to “people of the book” is not a factor here. The Ayatollahs came very close to destroying the ruins of Persepolis; luckily, however, the Iranians know that they have a magnificent pre-Islamic history, and they’re proud of it. They are Persian; they speak Persian languages. The modern non-Copt Egyptians are the descendants of Arab invaders and have no organic connection to their country’s antiquities. And some of them are so nuts that destroying the tourist trade is nothing to them, shattered economy be damned. (CT @10:11 might want to take note of that.)
It makes me sick to think about.
While it is true that the communists have destroyed antiquities and that people are hungry, I think there is a deep-rooted hatred of anything not Islamic, hence the desire to loot museums, cover or destroy the pyramids and burn churches.
A priest who visited the area once said that the Muslims would not look after these treasures. How right he is (sadly).
Oh we’ll guess there’s no excuses to go to Egypt anymore.
Conversely no reason to bring them here as well.
Osumashi, didn’t muslims in, I believe Mali, destroy ancient muslim buildings as they were a different sect or something?
We can only hope that more of the antiquities were looted than stolen. At least the looted antiquities may find their way back to the light of day, albeit without provenance. It’s a good argument for getting antiquities out of Egypt.
As for the fundamentalists, the Egyptian military has the right solution: shoot them.
As is commented above, the fundamentalists in going after ancient Egyptian remains are indeed killing the golden goose. But of course they can’t stand the comparison with a system that (provided the annual Nile inundation was good) kept Egyptians reasonably well fed and happy. Furthermore, to add to the Islamists’ sense of inferiority, the ancient Egyptian religion in its later forms (say the 18th dynasty before the Aten heresy) seems to have been quite sophisticated.
There was a reason the Pyramids had built in security when they were built. They have been looted down through the ages. Some might blame religion or politics but I suspect a cash grab more than anything else. Many people cannot feed themselves in Egypt.
Tell me how hunger drove the Afghans to dynamite the Bamiyan Buddhas.
