EUROPE’S flagship environmental policy has just been holed below the water line. On April 16th the European Parliament voted by 334 to 315 to reject proposals which (its supporters claimed) were needed to save the emissions-trading system (ETS) from collapse. Carbon prices promptly fell 40% (see chart). Some environmentalists fear that the whole edifice of European climate policy could start to crumble.

Besides, with Germany’s emissions skyrocketing because of their shutdown of eight nuclear plants, no one in Germany wants a suddenly effective carbon market right now. Eight nuclear plants is an extra 40-50 million tonnes of CO2, and German excuses about this will be interesting to hear at the upcoming COP/MOP conference in December.

What do you expect when you setup the equivalent of a private enterprise version of an “escort” service where you deal with the problem of finding enough willing female employees by enlisting the assistance of a large number of female swine and putting lipstick on them? The average drunken male, despite the beer goggles, is still going to notice lipstick on a pig. Only the perverted or delusional are going to be fooled.
Given that carbon credits have about the same value as multicolored unicorn farts in a free market system, they will asymptotically approach their true value which won’t reach 0 until the last watermelon ideologue dies. Combine that with a statist strangling of free enterprise resulting in any energy intensive industries leaving the Eurozone for the capitalist havens maintained by the Chicoms, and one has the situation of a corral full of bleating swine desperately hoping to be picked out by the lone drunken customer who’s much more interested in the female attendant of the corral. Continuing the insanely mixed metaphor, the Eurozone carbon markets are in the same position as the corral full of lipstick wearing swine about to be sent to the slaughterhouse given the marked failure of Merkel’s “escort” service.
The eurocrats who created this surreal “market” have probably still not learned the lesson that if you trade in something which has zero value, you make no money. That probably explains why human feces futures aren’t traded on various exchanges. CO2, when in the form of dry ice or large tankers full of liquid CO2 has value. CO2 in the atmosphere requires massive amounts of energy to concentrate into a form that people are willing to buy. If it were cold enough, CO2 would fall out of the air as dry ice crystals, but if the planet got that cold we’d have a lot more problems to deal with before considering a career of becoming a CO2 billionaire. I have no sympathy for the BBC’s employees whose retirement funds were invested in unicorn farts. I also want to see the day when Manbearpig is reduced to a single 20,000 square foot hovel being able to only afford a few servants and a single buxom lesbian massage therapist and only being able to afford the electrical energy equivalent of a small village instead of a medium size city.
