42 Replies to “Conservative Thought in B.C. Might Be “Dangerous””

  1. I’d label it under “damage control”. BC has always been the province of the NDP party and the not-the-NDP party. When the not-the-NDP party starts acting like the NDP party, a (or several) new not-the-NDP party comes into existence. If no one party can gather all of the not-the-NDP party votes, then the NDP wins. When the BC Liberals stray too close to the NDP by promoting things like, say, carbon taxes, draconican environmental regulations and massive governmental involvement in the economy, then the NDP will come back in because of a fragmented vote. Mickleburg seems to want either classic NDP or NDP lite (which would eventually lead to a new not-the-NDP party ruling), and so attempts to move the Liberals into the realm of sanity…er, in a more conservative direction, must be fought.

  2. The last poll I saw put the B.C. Conservatives neck and neck at 28%.
Non-locals don’t get the significance of that. NOW there’s some where to go OTHER than the NDP!!
Once the electorate understands that the Conservatives really ARE viable, there’ll be a firming of support for Cummins (Cons.)
The Clark (Campbell)’Liberals’ have worn out their welcome; too much baggage.
The Smart Meter program will be the coffin nail. Cummins is opposed to it.
    http://bcconservative.ca/2011/11/cummins-smart-meters-are-not-about-consumer-awareness-they-are-about-more-money-for-indebted-liberal-government/

  3. Some of the comments are priceless! One nut says PMSH is only cozying up to get the pipeline to ship AB tar to Asia.I asked him if the tar was any worse than Victoria dumping their raw sewage into the bay.Doubt if it will get by the Flop & Wail censors.
A bit O/T,but I love this…”If you see a typo or error on our site, report it to us. Please include a link to the story where you spotted the error.” I am surprised their site isn’t constantly down, with all the errors that should be reported to this commie rag!

  4. Christy is desperate. She’d invite Kim Jong-Un to a hockey game if it meant a few votes.
She is a “Paul Martin” Liberal, and she undoubtedly strongly dislikes Harper, but even she can see the writing.
B.C. voters have to show some maturity next election and NOT vote with their emotions. The Liberals DESERVE to be booted out in a landslide,BUT if ever there was a case of frying pan to fire, this is it.
Best case scenario, a 33% split evenly,so we can have a Conservative influence in a minority government of either the Dips or Liberals.
Some people have short memories, and don’t remember the NDP’s 1990’s rule. All our primary industries were in a state of shock ,many shut down mines and forestry operations, and many left for other venues that were more business friendly.
The Provincial economy was in the dumpster.
The NDP is not a Party of soft socialists, the B.C. version is as radical as any socialist Party outside North Korea. Vote these bastards in and watch the Province’s economy go down the tubes.
Hate Christy Clark? Can’t vote for her? Then vote Conservative,or Independent,or ANY other Party but the NDP.
Don’t put B.C. in the place of Linda Lovelace, with Adrian Dix playing Harry Reems.

  5. dmorris – the NDP mines minister of the day in ’94 came in to give a pep-talk to us graduating mining students. One of her lines was “We should be proud that BC is exporting mining professionals to the world.” We were all too gob-smacked to ask if that meant that she wasn’t doing her job. Approximately 36 mines in the province when they came into power, approximately 16 when they left. There’s a reason I’m an Albertan now.

  6. The story could have just as easily been an interpretation of the hockey game get-together as, Harper strategizing in a political environment where the NDP is the sole opposition. IOW, how far to the left do I really have to go?
Reading their policies, the BC Conservatives are another feel-good, status quo, leviathan maintenance crew in glitzy don’t-rock-the-boat jargon. If one needs a microscope to see the actual difference between the NDP and BC Liberals, an electron microscope would be required to distinguish the subtleties between the BC Liberals and BC Conservative Party platforms. For that, they would risk bringing back the NDP for a term or two?

  7. The first thing the NDP did when in power was to stop a mine from opening, then turning it into a provincial park?

  8. C_Miner, no kidding. Windy Craggy sent a chill through the Canadian mining industry that’s killed BC mining for a generation. There’s really not much choice but to get behind Clark because the alternative is so much worse.

  9. Just thinking, I am agast at your lack of green-screamer knowledge! Did you not know that the city of Victoria had another 12 miles of pipeline added on to their sh.t spewing pipeline after the condoms needles and tampons kept washing up in their bay, better to wash up on the Olympia peninsulas shores than the hallowed shores of our great saint of the CBC’s force of nurture Mr Suzuki. Get with it bud!

  10. And while we’re on the topic,we should never forget that the Mountain Pine Beetle infestation was spotted and about to be mostly eradicated by Bill Kordyban and Carrier lumber through an innovative logging and milling plan.
The contracts had already been signed, the Forest Licences granted when the NDP shut them down. In the end,the B.C. government had to pay $360 million to Carrier Lumber, and the Pine beetle devastated billions of dollars worth of timber.
The NDP DID create a lot of parkland,so we can’t ever exploit those resources either.
Yeah, vote NDP, IF you like the idea of being a have-not Province.

  11. “Vote these bastards in and watch the Province’s economy go down the tubes.”
Posted by: dmorris at January 21, 2012 4:18 PM
Hahaha!! How could anyone do worse than the BC Liberals?
Record deficits; forest industry destroyed; highest child and adult poverty rates in Canada; HST fiasco; etc., all thanks to the brilliant fiscal management of Gordon Campbell, Christy Clark and the BC Liberals.

  12. The lack of knowledge about sewage treatment, some of should recant what you don’t know.
    Some facts for you:
Sewage is 99% water. Long before it reaches it’s outsource/facility, your logs are no longer, and TP has been rendered to its fibers.
Anything of any size has been screened, typically, 5mm screens. “condoms needles and tampons” do not wash onshore in Puget Sound, Victoria beaches, or for that matter, “on the Olympic peninsula”.
In fact, the beaches are never closed for coliform counts, except for high rainfall/flood conditions on local beaches. And, the only reason for that, is because The Town of Oak Bay, has dual storm drain/sewers, with open pipes in manholes. High flood conditions cause contamination into the storm drains, which then drain direct to SHALLOW OUTFALLS.
The current deepwater outfall is an efficient system, that works, and works well, with -little, if any deleterious effects on the environment-. That is a proven fact. The only ones that find a problem with this are the environazis, looking for their perfect world, where none exist. These facts fly in the face of the emotional rhetoric of the envirofascists…..right bartinky?
Now to the topic at hand. Sure, the objective is to maintain the center-right coalition, to avoid the radical socialists of the NDP from gaining power and crippling the BC economy. The problem though, is the current crop of Liberals, are true blue Left wing Federal Liberals, the Paul Martin variety as was previously stated. The lines between them and the NDP are blurred, their policies are similar. That 23% Conservative popularity is not a fluke, it is a direct reflection of those like myself, who have as much disdain for Christy!, Falcon, Coleman, Bond and their Carbon tax, BC Rail, Smart Meter, Social Engineering policies as we do the NDP.
We can’t afford the Liberals, and certainly not the NDP. The last election we held our noses, but this time, the stink is no longer tolerable.

  13. “The Provincial economy was in the dumpster.
Posted by: dmorris at January 21, 2012 4:18 PM ”
The Provincial economy went into the dumpster, and still is. There. Fixed that for ya.
bartinsky. Thanks for the update.Time to talk to some of my yank buds and start a lawsuit for despoiling their beaches.

  14. Iberia
Yeah, BC was such a wonderful place in the 90s. /sarc
High unemployment, declining GDP, house prices in the gutter, net OUTmigration, higher and higher tazes, over-regulation, and, best of all, Glenocchio and his comrades turned the province into a HAVE NOT province for the first time ever.
And yeah, the Leftwing Liberals deserve to be tossed, all leftwing governments fail sooner or later.

  15. If the Conservatives in B.C. are at 23-28% popularity right now, I see light on the horizon.
Most conservatives in B.C. vote Liberal because that is the only place our vote could go.
The Lib coalition formed by Campbell which swept the province in 2001 was made up of libs, soc cred and conservative. It worked well for years and they fulfilled their promises, particularly on tax reduction. The last election victory was squandered by the fear of the HST backlash.
And now we have Christy Clark , as stated above, a Paul Martin Federal Liberal. She may play kissy face and pattycakes with Harper but she is not in his league in any way.
Those now making up the lib party are NOT the mostly conservative leaning as when first elected.
We have seen carbon taxes under this government among other atrocities on the taxpayer. Translink has the province by the short curlies and costs continue to rise. Nothing like what things would be like if the NDP get back in government.
I think this is why the conservative party in B.C. is surging, if you can call it that. We have another year plus before we go to the polls. Let’s hope the Conservative party of BC makes hay out of that time and over runs the B.C. Libs in popularity. It would not take much.
The HST fiasco with Van Der Zalm making hay out of an old vendetta against Campbell and funded by George Soros and the NDP taught a lot of us conservatives a serious lesson!-One we will not forget and the business community is watching closely as well.

  16. Actually it was a great place to live, danbc. I was here. Then the Liberals took over and they took BC from first place to last place in Canada almost every respect, except personal taxes . We even became a have-not province for the first time!
Much as I disliked Glen Clarke, he was crucified for a budget deficit of a few million dollars and getting a deal on his deck from a neighbour. Campbell got caught driving drunk with his mistress and then broke just about every promise he made, giving away billions to his corporate buddies (BC Rail, BC Hydro), breaking his own laws by running up the highest deficits ever, and yeah, the “Left-wing” media really held him to account.

  17. It is a real conundrum: on the one hand, a vote for John Cummins is effectively a vote for Adrian Dix; on the other hand, a vote for Christy Clark is directly a vote for Christy Clark! I blame the LPBC hacks who foisted Clark on us, and they can wear the consequence of electing Mr Dix – I will not vote for that empty-headed harpy under any circumstances.

  18. Carbon Taxes, 23% arbitrary increase in BC’s minimum wage, pulling support for Prosperity Mine, continued membership in the Western Climate Initiative, pushing the “2007 Greenhouse Emissions Reduction Act”, sucking up to the BCTF, HEU and BCGEU and disguising mandatory day care as “All Day Kindergarten”- there is very little between the NDP and Clark’s Liberals.
Window dressing in the form of “conservative” advisors and the odd right wing candidate doesn’t change the fact that Clark is a Red Liberal, from a Red Liberal upbringing – and that is the direction of her government.
A vote for the BC COnsrvatives is a vote for the NDP – but a vote for Clark is a vote for more NDP policies under her regime.
The ideal scenario is a revolt by the right wing of the Liberal party and the removal of Clark as leader – this is unlikely. A hopeful second case is a minority government with Conservatives in the Interior holding the balance of power – probably more unlikely.
The probable outcome will be a minority NDP government, the defeat of Clark in her own riding and a merger of the old Libs with the Conservatives to form a new party that rescues BC from a (hopefully) short NDP reign.
Whatever happens – Clark must go and the traditional Socred/Refrom base of the BC Liberals need to retake control of the party, whatever it is called.

  19. NOBODY in BC voted for the liberals because they wanted a liberal government. The original liberals were a protest against a foolish socred premier and a flat out rejection of the NDP. Since then, the liberals are the ‘for God’s sake not the NDP’ vote. We are very strongly divieded in this province and it is no surprise that a lot of folk don’t know just how bad the NDP was for the main wealth generating industries in this province. MY town did get 2 new welfare offices though….
As for Kordyban; he got screwed, plain and simple, but there was no way he could have stopped the beetle outbreak without access to the park it built up in. I have worked in that district for close to 20 years and i know there was no way that the beetle could have been halted in that particular district once it exploded from the park. You would think we would have learned from the previous bark beetle epidemic in the ’80’s.

  20. What the hell does the Glob@Plop know about BC politics? Nothing. Kristy the Klown is a flake of the highest order, Queen of the photo-ops with about as much substance as a piece of accidental fluff… perhaps even less. Klark has been a federal “Liberal” activist her whole life, she’s about as Conservative as Steve (the rocket) Dijon, and as intellectually capable as Trudeaus hairy faced kid. Kristy’s ex husband was Paul Martins “Liberal” point man out here in BC for gawds sake. This story is stupid with a capital STU! No one in they’re right mind wants Comrade Dix as Premier, but voting for the Kristy Party is like rewarding incompetence and corruption, and ignoring the myriad of ethical breaches and general douchbaggery of the BC Liberals. Kristy Klark HATES PM Harper, but if staging a photo-op with him could potentially gain her a few votes then Kristy’s ready for her close up. If British Columbians want a Conservative Government then they should vote for the BC Conservatives, but if they want more carbon taxes, “smart” meters and constant exercises in social engineering and corruption then by all means vote for Kristy the Klown or Comrade Dix. The choices are clear, no matter how much the media try and muddy the waters.

  21. It’s going to be interesting when then next BC election is called. Under no circumstances would I vote for a party led by the queen of the moonbats. Right now I see absolutely no difference between the BC Lieberal party and the BC communist party. In terms of statist tendencies they are equal. The BC Conservative party is the only rational choice at the moment.
Where I live is a working class town which has voted NDP in the past although I suspect it might go Conservative as there are a hell of a lot of people who work in mining and other industries that moonbats want to shut down. I’ll do my bit by mentioning to patients that I’ll probably leave the province if the communists get back into power again. 25% of the population here doesn’t have a GP and people know the situation will only get worse if there’s a communist government in Victoria.
Time to check out a few places in Alberta like Lethbridge and Medicine Hat to see where I might want to move in the next couple of years.

  22. Would agree with C_Miner above who pegs it as damage control.
Mickleborough is a nasty piece of work. Likes to approvingly quote other wackjobs who compare to Albertans to blood suckers.

  23. At the risk of feeding the resident troll, Iberia’s comment at 6:09pm is so far beyond delusional, it’s hard to know how to respond. But this verdict in 2001 by the voters of BC might provide some indication that his perception of reality is not exactly rational.

  24. Oh yea, all those millions Chinese immigrants that now own Vancouver were Liberals through and through, ready to throw their votes on the Liberals and the NDP because they love little Asian people.
Ha ha ha, what a bunch of pathetic ignoramuses.

  25. Anybody who’s ever listened to that Chisty Clarks radio program could never vote for her. A true liberal idiot. Never. Ever. Please God no.

  26. Hopefully Cummins and the BC Conservatives can keep rising in the polls. The BC voter does not need any more of George Soros or David Suzuki’s policies.

  27. “But there’s a danger you can go too far. The Prime Minister is a controversial figure. If you start to move a lot to the right, there can be leakage on the other side.”
This would be one of the silly statements

  28. @ Robert W. (Vancouver)
Which reality would that be? I’m no disputing that the Liberals won a landslide victory in 2001. That was thanks to Glen Clark’s arrogance, the Asian economic problems affecting the BC economy and the non stop media attacks against the NDP.
As an example of the latter, consider how the news cameras were set up and waiting for the police to execute their search warrant in Clark’s house. All because he may have gotten a discount on deck construction. Contrast that to the treatment Campbell got after being arrested for driving drunk in Hawaii. Aside from the joke of the breathalyzer indicating 0.149% when .15% was a felony offense in that state, the media only once mentioned the “women who wasn’t his wife” that was with him. This woman was actually his mistress, and the media dutifully kept it quiet for years. That, along with all the other criminal activity (BC Rail, etc) perpetrated by the Campbell government and white washed by the media has gone a long way in keeping them in power.

  29. I used to be a skeptic about
    ufo’s and ET’s but.
    ibera@5:17 made me a believer.
Campbell did nothing for the province that a monkey couldn’t have done (and probably beter).
Cristy is a step backwards from Gordo.
Next election should be about insamity or reality. I’m not holding my breath for reality

  30. Iberia, you are a typical communist Dipper supporter. It’s never your fault, everyone else is to blame, and its a giant conspiracy.
Revisionism from a Dipper, go figure.
77-2, remember? Only the most dull-witted agree with you. 77-2 attests to that. The NDP were in SINGLE digit territory.
And yeah, Campbell also got re-elected, AFTER the drunk driving incident. Sucks to be you.
    Get over yourself!

  31. Sorry to rile you DanBC but I have been in the business 36 years, while not familiar with the Victoria situation I can only go by what was on a TV documentary a few years ago, if the sewage is treated, to the degree Calgarys is, why don’t the BC people set the record straight? Is Halifaxs treated in the same way?

  32. I agree with some of what C_Miner says, more completely agree with SeanM.
IF we want to keep B.C. sane we need to push for Conservatives and conservative policies.
Just look at Vancouver. Gregor got re-elected with George Soros money. Dianne Watts is an excellent Mayor of Surrey, and she leans definitely right.
Anybody who actually takes the grope and fail seriously out here we chuck under the chin and roll our eyes. IF, and I say IF they could convince Dianne at some point to head the Conservative party out here, then we’d have a game plan. I am not discounting Cummins, but someone like Dianne would electrify and mobilize people to get enthusiastic. Our young people do not know what the NDP did to this province and it is up to us to make sure they understand.
There are games afoot out here politically. You have to watch for them, but they are there. Just like the re-election of Robertson. For the riots alone he should have been defeated. But, Vancouver is notoriously left and socialist. Cost a million to host the Occupiers. That and two deaths , yet everybody seems confused as to just what is going on… watch and listen closely and you will see emerging the same tactics used south of the border to get what they want. Recall? Look to Wisconsin where massive recall initiatives almost got the majority back at the state house and Governor Walker is under threat right now. Sound familiar?
As things move forward we all have to know where we stand and what we want out of government. We have been shortchanged federally for years and now have a decent government with a majority. Sask is perking along now with a decent government and great Premier. In order to effect that sort of thing for B.C. we have to support conservative ideas and help the fledgling conservative party here in B.C. continue to find footing and move ahead. We have some time, but not a lot. We all know the unions and the left are always working overtime to subvert and undermine.

  33. “At the risk of feeding the resident troll, Iberia’s comment at 6:09pm is so far beyond delusional, it’s hard to know how to respond. But this verdict in 2001 by the voters of BC might provide some indication that his perception of reality is not exactly rational.
Posted by: Robert W. (Vancouver) at January 21, 2012 8:57 PM”
    Robert has it exactly right!

  34. Simple!! The BC Conservative Party wins by a Landslide….and don’t tell me they can’t grow into the job.

  35. Top down has been ingrained in our political thinking to such an extent that accepting a revived Conservative Party becomes the only alternative. If that Conservative Party was out organizing ridings I might have more faith. The only people I see doing that are the NDP. Conservative BCer’s wait for the 5:00 pm news to get their latest info!
Reform and later the CP effort clearly shows that conservative thought agrees with the majority. The fact that Christy Clark and her ilk have gained power of the vehicle that weilds power is more an indictment of the political will of the members. Shame.
My concern with the provincial conservatives is that (1) I don’t see any organizing going on and (2) a significant number of federal conservatives have turned thumbs down on them and many have actively supported the provincial Liberals.
    (3) It benefits the NDP more than anyone to see the center right vote split. I fear that it is NDP operatives who promote this split more than any other.
Conservative supporters in BC should be joining local riding associations and ensuring conservative candidates are nominated. If infact the province is as conservative as we hope then the caucus can tell Ms Clarke what to do and not vice versa! But that takes work.

  36. Bartinky
If you are in the business, then, the points I brought up should be addressed. (I was in the business too, for 25 years).
IOW, recant the condoms statement, and answer the biggest question, where is the damage?
Basic biology, and my kids aquarium show, that fish poop in the water. They eat it too….
    How is that sewage different?
Granted, if you want to talk about Calgary, or other saltwater locations with minimal current action, you have a problem, and treatment is required. Enclosed freshwater systems get polluted from sewage, unquestionably.
But the biggest point in Victoria, is the complete misinformation that carries on regarding the issue. Costs will exceed a billion dollars, and knowing government, will no doubt be double original estimates, for the Cadillac system that governments always seem to favour.
Critics of the massive potential project, only want two questions answered:
1–Where is the damage, loss of habitat, and human danger in the existing system?
2–Would not that excessive amount of money have better value injected into our health or education systems? (Another debate for another day as to who really benefits).
Victoria is often criticized for the current system, but its usually the holier than thou, Greenpeace/Georgia Straight Alliance/Greenie types making it, without proof of danger, damage or deleterious effects, but full of hype, diatribe, and mis-truths (Mr Poopie anyone?)
The existing system is obviously working, and working very well, but its typical of government to try to fix a problem that either doesn’t exist or one that is over-exaggerated, global warming anyone?

  37. Bartinky, you have some points, but the aquarium analogy is pure crazy. If you swim in and drink sewer water you will get very sick, unlike your fishies. Not all species are the same.
As a disqualifier I admit i am not up to snuff on improvements that may have been made in the last 20 years. However, when i lived there the sewage flowed out onto the beach at low tide and in Caddy bay only a fool would go scuba diving. I found that one out the hard way. Further, in UVIC chemistry labs they were just trying, without much enthusiasm to curtail the dumping of seriously dangerous chemicals into the sinks. Those sinks led into the bay. WHile all this was going on, there were a lot of folks saying much the same thing that you are. As it stand, perhaps very few people are getting sick from raw sewage dumping (do they still do that) but the fact that being splashed by waves during a storm carries a health warning is not good for the cities image.

  38. One can only hope that Crispy gets tossed soon enough for the next leader/premier to gain some cred before the election. Clark is an Albatross around the neck of the LPBC and they know it. They could still attract the middle and right enough to beat the socialists, but only if they boot Mrs Clark back onto the airwaves at CKNW where she belongs. Too bad Chuch Strahl has quit politics. He would have made an excellent choice for premier with the BCLP. He is correct about the BC Conservatives — full of far right religious fanatics and has-been western separatists. They stand as much chance of getting elected in this province as the Billy the Zalm does!
PM Harper has shown that the path to govt is through pragmatic moderation and a slow, steady shift to the right. Let folks make up their minds to join the cause, rather than beat them over the head with extremism. One cannot effect any change from the opposition benches.

  39. “One cannot effect any change from the opposition benches.”
I beg to differ, TrueNorthist; Preston Manning and the Reform MPs changed Canada – from the opposition bench! PMSH was the mastermind behind the change but change happened that would have never happened via the establishment Progressive Conservatives (they were just like the Liberanos/Dippers/Blocistas).
DanBC – the shame of Victoria is the open raw sewage dump. A Capital City in the fruit fly’s area dumps raw sewage into the Pacific Ocean. It should be mentioned every day by us because it exposes the hypocrisy of the left wing zealots on the west coast.
