The Latest from Iowa

Here’s a summary of what happened in Iowa Tuesday night. The big question is, does this give Rick Santorum enough propulsion to dramatically change the Republican presidential candidate race?
Here’s the voting schedule. What are your predictions for New Hampshire on January 10th?

  3. Langman did you read what you just quoted? That poll is a slice and dice of different demographic groups. Who cares how people over 65 feel about Ron Paul? Let’s see the nationwide numbers for all voters. That’s a different story. That’s what’s needed to win. Romney can win, Ron Paul can’t.

  4. Thank you for the compliment ET. Some day I hope I have the pleasure of getting to discuss politics in person with you. I am a big fan.
Btw I would highly recommend you read the recently published biography in Steven Jobs. Next to Obama and maybe Larry Ellison he may be the greatest narcissist of our era. A fascinating biography.

  5. Who cares how people over 65 feel about Ron Paul?
That’s the demographic with the highest voter turnout. That’s why pollsters and politicians care what they think.
The GOP will likely have to beat an Obama/Clinton ticket, and that’s gonna be a lot tougher than beating Obama/Biden.
The emotional conflict between GOP candidates seen here is indicative of a bigger problem in America. Instead of working together to beat Obama, it’s all about “my candidate is perfect, and your’s is an asswhole”. If the GOP looses in November they will have nobody to blame but themselves.

  6. Oh, and for the record, Romney is very similar to PMSH. He politics and governs as far to the right as he possibly can. This when he is potus he will govern much further to the right than he did in deep blue mass just as PMSH is governing much further to the right now that he has a majority than when he had a minority.
Romney is also a doer – he likes to achieve stuff not just engage in rhetoric which makes him come off as borIng rather than bombastic at this stage of the campaign. Ditto PMSH. Not that long ago many Canadian conservatives were enraged at the lack of action by PMSH on several policy issues near and dear to the base. That bleating has almost completely ended in just three months of parliamentary action. They get it now and thu have PMSHs back. Expect the same result in the months after MR becomes potus.

  7. Mitt Romney is a centrist who will govern on behalf of paymasters and big corporations. While he might be an improvement on Obama, so would be almost anyone picked at random from a Walmart parking lot.
Which describes Ron Paul fairly well. The guy is about eighteen cans short of a 2-4 and for every good idea he had (twenty years ago) he has five others that might signal an alien invasion of earth.
We’ve got to pray hard that Santorum, Gingrich or Perry win the nomination. Huntsman is crazier than a loon and could be a Chinese double agent.
Sorry to bust in here with frank, honest talk, but that’s just the way I roll.
Ask yourselves in a month how much you admire this “conservative” government we have. Problem is of course they are bound to be better than any alternative. Just change Walmart to Cdn Tire, same deal. It’s turning into a freak show, just watch the front bench.

  8. @ james:
Seems you didn’t read the link. North of 60 did and explains it well so I won’t repeat.
There are lots of other polls if you cared to look for them.
Face it, all the hype about RP being a loon is hype. All the things he supports are constitutional, and if that is loony then you need to go and think about all the stronger intellectuals than yourself who designed the constitution.

  9. someone: “Huntsman is crazier than a loon and could be a Chinese double agent.”
Why would you say that? Initially, I thought he might be a globalist, until I listened to him being interviewed. He seems pretty sensible.

  10. Funny how all the Ron Paul critics repeat the “loon” meme because of a lot of “his ideas” and “his positions” but none of them seem to elaborate on the details…I ask these MSM regurgitating vox boxes to please explain why you think R.P. is so coocoo.
Let’s start with your Iran seeking a nuke:
Israel has enough fire power to blow up Iran 10 times over is my answer…So why should the US be involved? Is Israel a state of the union?

  11. So what you’re saying Terry Tory is that because Israel has nukes it’s OK for Americans to vote for a loon?
In a rational world Ron Paul wouldn’t be running for office he would be running from the guys in white coats who are carrying a straight jacket with Ron’s name on it!

  12. Langmann:
Joe doesn’t have anything besides invective and platitude.
Joe likes consecutive trillion-dollar deficits. Joe likes kicking cans down the road. Joe preaches the importance of “don’t spend any more than you bring in”, but of course he doesn’t mean it. Joe likes having big governments take care of him and pack his lunchbox. Joe is unwilling to do what MUST be done: cut.
Joe is not a *real* conservative.

  13. “Joe: got some proof of RP being a loon?”
Yeah pretty much everything he has published over the last few decades.
The problem with drastic action such as that which is proposed by RP is that it inevitably elicits a drastic backlash. The method most successful is taking the long view and inch by inch pushing your agenda forward. A prime example is the incremental conservatism as practiced by PM Harper. He is going to get the job done and it will be much longer lasting than as an example that which Gingrich was able to bring about when speaker. Yes Gingrich got a lot accomplished BUT everything he brought in was tossed right back out by the next duly elected congress.
It may feel good to have Ron Paul say “Withdraw from the middle east” but when the desired results are not realized the US will be back in the middle east with a vengeance. Sudden drastic change never works in politics. Slow steady incremental-ism will get you to where you want to go much faster and keep you there much longer.
