It’s Probably Nothing

At our request, William Bernstein, an investment manager at Efficient Portfolio Advisors in Eastford, Conn., reviewed Rep. Paul’s portfolio as set out in the annual disclosure statement. Mr. Bernstein says he has never seen such an extreme bet on economic catastrophe. ”This portfolio is a half-step away from a cellar-full of canned goods and nine-millimeter rounds,” he says.

  1. “This portfolio is a half-step away from a cellar-full of canned goods and nine-millimeter rounds,”
    aaand, what’s your point?

  2. That is pretty much the same portfolio I have right now. I am however more diversified in my shorts. If he were elected I would have to reconsider this plan.
One question: does this portfolio indicate that he can’t get elected and therefore not institute the structural changes that are required to prevent the pending economic meltdown or is he admitting there is nothing we can to to stop it?

  3. If he gets the nomination watch the left bring this to the forefront. Pelosi gets a pass but he will get raked over the coals for making a sure bet.
Gold has been ‘money’ for thousands of years. Time after time someone comes along with a ‘system’ to replace it and to everyone’s shock and amazement that system collapses like a dying star. I am guessing during each of these other trials there were the ‘crazies’ like Ron Paul pointing out the obvious falicy all they way to the end.

Ho ho ho, if you could find a speck of rust or grim on one of my guns, I’d give it to you.
I was way ahead on preps the month Obamba took office, and have spent outrageous amounts of money and time since then dedicated to what’s coming.
Only recently (last month), I pulled every stock and equity I own and have redistributed in safer positions for the interim, at the time I was largely invested in Europe, and included Canadian markets. I got 90% out of the US and Asia in 2009. Today it’s 0%!

  5. Me No Dhimmi’s Law:
The longer this thread continues the higher the probability that someone will observe that “you can’t eat gold”. LOL.
Um, Dan Tappin, me too. Altho I do have bonds which have continued to generate returns long after I thought they should have tanked.
WOW, 5%!!!!! in those micro stocks!!!!!
Notice the WSJ mentions the recent 20% drop but not the possibly 1000% gain on those stocks since 2002.
And laugh-out-loud about the risk — and notice the language — that “deflation could occur”. Nope. That would require bitter austerity tonic which is simply not on. In Jim Sinclair’s words, it’s “quantitative easing to infinity”. [read: continuous counterfeiting].
Nope, we don’t need to look at Ron Paul’s portfolio to demonstrate his CRACKPOT NUTTINESS.
(Those newsletters, Alex Jones, conspiracy theories, 9/11 troofer supporters, young Dem-voting activist supporters).
And I’ll say it again: Ron Paul’s animus about the Fed (which I share) is rooted in good old fashioned anti-semitism: Jew-banksters trying to take over the world.

  6. There are lots of valid opposition to Ron Paul’s ideas but the “he’s crazy” smacks of desperation. Most of the complaints about RP are along the same lines as the attacks against the Reform Party by the Canadian MSM- crazy, racists, zealots, dangerous, unpatriotic (remember “Do you love Canada, Mr. Harper?). The racists newsletters are the exception, RP and his vague answers about them deserve the scrutiny they are getting. But his portfolio?
If the GOP had found even one candidate that had the boldness of RP’s economic policies and sincerity of his beliefs then they US voters would not have to witness this perverse display of the GOP candidates ripping each other apart like a bunch of hyenas. By the time they are done destroying each other and pissing off opposing candidate’s supporters, will there be anyone left who wants to vote for the winner? Maybe voters do need a third party option.

  7. See, here’s the issue:
Ron Paul IS batshit crazy, and there’s nobody better in the primaries.
If Ron Paul is the nominee, every inroad into the Jewish communities will evaporate. Every independent will run for the hills, and every blue Dem will hold their nose and vote for Obama.
And then, Ron Paul’s portfolio will really pay off.

  8. This all ties in With what has happened to police departments in the States.
You could call this “The Death of a Republic”
Local Cops Ready for War With Homeland Security-Funded Military Weapons
    Dec 21, 2011 4:45 AM EST
A decade of billions in spending in the name of homeland security has armed local police departments with military-style equipment and a new commando mentality. But has it gone too far? Andrew Becker and G.W. Schulz of the Center for Investigative Reporting report.
    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/12/20/local-cops-ready-for-war-with-homeland-security-funded-military-weapons.html

  9. Mr. Bernstein says he has never seen such an extreme bet on economic catastrophe.
So if America didn’t have a economic catastrophe then RP’s bet/portfolio wouldn’t pay off the way it’s designed to.
Would that be a conflict of interest if RP was elected POTUS?
    hmmmm

  10. james >
“Ron Paul is a bat shit crazy truffer”
Nah, he’s not crazy. He’s a little eccentric maybe and has unfortunately been forced to use “alternative media” sources to find any public exposure whatsoever.
Had he not, no one would have a clue who he is today, which in fact bodes well for his tenacity and credit.
His extreme libertarian views obviously don’t fit well into a Corporate Capitalist dare say Neo Con economy, nor do they fit well with the nanny state, gun grabbing, big government leftosphere. Therefore he is mocked and shunned by both sides of polar US politics. Both parties have allot to lose if Ron Paul ever became president, and only a very slim margin of Americans could agree on losing one side of the American Fascist government scam or the other.
Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton are genuinely bat-shit crazy, yet half the nation loves them, goes to show……

  11. His extreme portfolio is up over 600% percent since 2000. Yes he invested like this back then. So basically he is crushing any traditional investment portfolios which tend to be heavy stocks and therefore flat since 2000.
If this is the result of bat shit crazy then I want to be crazy too.

  12. Ironically, Ron Paul must be listening to Glenn Beck.
Except, of course, for the part where Ron Paul thinks the US should primarily concern itself with US interests, as opposed to Israel’s.

  13. The article stated that Ron Paul has held many of his positions since 2002.
Take a look at the gold price since 2002 (it has gone up fourfold)
    http://www.kitco.com/scripts/hist_charts/yearly_graphs.plx
…now take a look at the Dow Jones for the last 10 years (up 50% since 2002)
    http://www.google.ca/finance?q=INDEXDJX:.DJI#
…and now ask yourself if you knew then what you know now would you not have done the same thing.
And now who is the crazy one…the person investing in the mainstream recommendations in that article, or the stocks that Ron Paul owns.

  14. nothing wrong withg the Paul that a frontal lobotomy wouldn’t cure
I remember his nonsense from the last time, batshit crazy is an understatement

  15. Ron Paul is an American Patriot. He doesn’t believe in propping up Israel, with dollars and American lives.
Since the end of the cold war, there is NO American interest in supporting Israel and alienating energy producing Arab countries.
Realpolitick and self interest would dicate that the United States shift to a pro-Arab or neutral position.
And now, domestic politics would favour a pro Arab stance.
And I find it really ironic many of the biggest special interest group supporters of Israel are also behind the change in immigration policy which has produced the dramatic demographic increase of people of the Islamic religion in the West which have made the continued support of Israel in the West a doubtful political plus in domestic matters.

  16. For those so inclined (relatively few judging by the comments) you may want to give a read to “Human Action”, by Ludwig Von Mises, the deceased “dean” of the Austrian School of economics. Pay particular atention to the the Austrian Business Cycle theory and pay really close attention to the parts on currency and gold.
That would be RP’s economic Bible, don’t let the fact that “these crazy theories” accurately descibe the state of the global economy and why it is toast. For further reading I suggest mises.org for economics and understanding and lewrockwell.com for general libertarian essays. To all the trolls, a very Merry Christmas. As an over taxed father of three I have never been able to save enough to take advantage of the Austrian ideas…but I do admire elegant reasoning, validated by observed behavior and events.

  17. Ron Paul. Hell of a patriot. He thinks Bradley Manning is a patriot, too.
Just the kind of guy you want in charge of the nation.
Someone remind Ron Paul that it’s no longer 1880, and foreign affairs matter in a world that you can cross in a few hours.

  18. My belief is that we must defend Israel no matter what the cost, it is a primary moral obligation that we bear, and to reject it would be essentially the same as rejecting God. Now it could be argued that our society has been gradually rejecting God for two generations and so abandoning Israel to their enemies would be a logical conclusion of that trend.
I have no argument against the economic logic of Ron Paul in this regard, but I view the security of Israel as a non-negotiable responsibility.
Ron Paul stands for a very limited world view that is survivalist and which lacks any sense of community responsibility. It is a me-first philosophy that seems almost totally incompatible with national political leadership. As a voice among many, it has some merit perhaps, but as the commander in chief of the leader of the free world, it could be a disaster of unimaginable proportions. But I can’t see Ron Paul being electable. I doubt that he could ever get more than 20% of the national vote as either the GOP or third party candidate.
Also he is 76 years old and even his supporters must have some doubts about his mental agility. I don’t agree that he is “batshit crazy” but I do find that his ultra-libertarian philosophy is better suited for perhaps being mayor of Twin Falls Idaho rather than President of the United States of America.

  19. Amen, Yukon Gold. Isolationism was a dead end in 1914, let alone today. It’s worth remembering that building walls didn’t help the Soviet Union that much in the end.

  20. Well..Jimmah Carter has sent condolences to Kim Jong Un (link to Wash.Times story over at Drudge) First comment,’and may I be the first to send a hearty F*#k you Jimmy Carter’ pretty much says it all!

  21. And you know what , all i hear about is how no one is good enough or far enough right to be POTUS , when Cain was running everyone cried and slammed him yes even conservatives like you , and when someone even mentions the name palin everyone moans and wimpers stupid, uselss and so on.
Some one say’s ron paul and you hear “that guy is crazy , someone say’s gingrich and you get “yeah sure if he can keep it in his pant’s , and just wait he will flip flop on everything, perry same , romney same, bachmann crazy bible thumpin …birth control makes you retarded, so on and so forth.
You all did it with harper, and the cons here oh the are CINO, blabla bla.
Now here we are not even 7 MONTH’S into a four year term and they have gotten rid of or are in the proccess of getting rid of , the long gun , the wheat board , they have awarded navy ship building contract’s, and the f-35 program (still waiting on the yank’s to get the lead out) They HAVE shown there determination to stick to there promisies and people in here still cry and whine that they are CINO’S.
I am begining to wonder who the CINO’S are sounds like alot in here, but i digress ,the americans have made there bed plain and simple.
    DO YOU GUY’S UNDERSTAND THAT?
OBAMA may be the worst in histroy but it is not like russia or the U.N. , he was not just put there ,people asked him,YES LITTERALLY ASKED HIM!!! , by voting to be their leader do you get that?
Do you all understand that? No matter who is on the stage nothing will change no matter what. It has nothing to do with the leader of a country and everything to do with the people especially in a democracy . If the people can’t muster up anything better than ron paul or gingrich or who ever Palin, bachmann , perry , romney then that is that, let it be worry about yourself now, because no matter who they put in there now they will either have to be as feerless as jesus with balls as big as coconut’s to stand up to the wall-mart families , and to the union thug’s.
It is not all unions who have ruined the country it is crony capitalism just as much , still everyone is blinded, they need a leader who will not allow himself to be a puppet on a string, they need someone who will not be swayed by any lobby group of anykind, but they (the people ) will only get what they deserve no matter what .
Most conservatives / republicans only bother to look at politics now between period’s and quarters.
So yeah this is it , it is done does anyone in here think RON PAUL,OR GINGRICH OR ANY OTHER CANDIDATE can fix in 8 years what has been piled on by almost 300 million americans for the last 40? .
Every decision they make will divide the nation now no matter who it is. America is done . finished . The america i know (born in 78) is So different from america now ,and americans don’t even get it they are still ASKING the govornment to down size the govornment!!!
People do you not see this NO ONE can stop it now so it MUST take it’s course , but yes i still beleive there are enough americans that can put it back on track but not before she falls completley off of it plain and simple.
Sorry KATE I GOTTA STEAL YOUR QUOTE!!!
“WHAT WE NEED IS A GOOD FAMINE”, one hell of a good famine one that will make the depression look like a walk in the park ,and no i am not even remotley prepared for one but who ever is? only the few.
But while america goes in for surgery that will be the most crucial time as she must not be tainted or tampered with while she is being operated on , the constitution must be upheld at all cost’s and all POTUS in the future must be forced to learn from this comming derailment.
America nailed it with it’s consttution the forfathers nailed it but what has happened is all of that success and hard work and determination freedom and liberty has been unattended and left to rot (crony capitalism, lawyers on everystret corner willing to sue anyone for anything), Not corporations but individual leaders of corporations becoming so greedy that they pack up there own factories and ship em out over seas ,while forcing middle america to suffer and shrink al because of one persons greed(crony capitalism).
It’s not enough for the walmart family to each net about 21 Billion nope they need more ,and i say let em because it is there company let me run it how they wish but the problem is they end up selling the very country that allowed them to become that succesfull down to the highest bidder and right now that is china.
It is lost on mega corporations leaders now they only worry about themselves not about there employees or america or americans if they can make themselves a few hundred milllion more then why not put americans out on the street’s (this applies to all western nations as well but i am focusing on america) .
Anyway that’s my rant to you all because you all are missing the biggest picture of all , we all say that the insite poeple are enabling and actually doing a diservice to the druggies by helping them kill themselves they need to hit rock bottom before they can start a recovery , everyone was mad at the gubmint for bailing out the auto industy because it needed to fail before it could start a recovery and rightfully so i totally agree, but now everyone is trying to stop america from failing do you see the pattern here?
America has to fail(i don’t want it to, i am worried as much as the next guy) now.
All in all if america was to pay back everysingle debt it has to everyone in this world balance it’s budjet, and pay it’s national and state debt off i bet it would be arount the 50 trillion mark , now tell me is america to big to fail?
    I don’t think so!!!
I am not for OR against Ron Paul to be quite honest i don’t know enough about him ….some say his age IS an issue ..me not so much , i am also in the bachmann camp as well she is a good woman and does know the constituion..(she’s a constitutional lawyer)
I would like to quote MIKE IN CALGARY FROM A PREVIOUS POST . About RON PAUL cause i think it bears some relevance here .
    “Gun control? Gone.

*Real* right-wing conservatives vote for Ron Paul. The rest vote for Obama-lite: Newt or Mitt.”

  22. peter, co-incidentally, I’m re-reading LvM’s Human Action and have more or less promised myself to re-read it every 5 years or so.
    Bat-shit crazy / Ron Paul / Gold.
MY portfolio bears a striking similarity to RP’s except that I also have physical gold and bonds, holding them long past when I thought they would tank.
HOWEVER, that changes my view of Ron Paul not one whit, for he truly is bat-shit crazy notwithstanding his investment acumen, at least since 2002.
Read that Weekly Standard piece about the company he keeps; his newsletters from the 90s; the conspiracy theories, his frequent guest appearances on bat-shit crazy Alex Jones’s radio show. Etc.
I’ll say it again: Ron Paul’s anti-fed feelings are animated primarily by his virulent anti-semitism. Yunno, jew-banksters conspiring to take over the world. That’s Ron Paul.
AND, he has zero understanding of the threat of sharia law and believes that all our problems are the fault of America and NONE due to that vicious totalitarian ideology which out-nazis nazism.
FINALLY, it doesn’t matter that some of his ideas (economics/monetary) are sound. He has zero leadership qualities. Zero.
    DO.NOT.BE.FOOLED.BY.RON.PAUL.

  23. paul in calgary >
Sums up my view of Ron Paul.
The only issue is that he’s be assasinated by either party before he passed his first bill.
They’ve already done it in the media, the SDA conservative comments have proven it.

  24. The conclusion of the article (how many of you read the whole thing?) says it all for me:
“A spokeswoman for Rep. Paul didn’t respond to requests for comment. But you can say this for Ron Paul: In investing, as in politics, he has the courage of his convictions.”
If ‘it’s probably nothing’…then Paul is crazy.
But the writing is on the wall folks.
Paul has even convinced me a born again, Bible thumping Christian, that legalising marijuana as a controlled substance is the way to go.

  25. Paul has no chance of winning the GOP nom – that’s obvious to even a large majority of those who are voting for him.
But his real impact will be felt if he decides to run as a third party/independent. By doing so the odds that obama wins a second mandate grow enormously.
And if obama wins a second term, the likelyhood of Paul’s investments paying off big grows enormously as well.
Thus his portfolio could be seen as a fomr of insider trading and a foreshadow of his running as an independent.
And that is the story that the WSJ should be focussing on…

  26. Let me counter this smear with some factual analysis, if I may.
The Paul portfolio, they sneer, “doesn’t own stock in any major companies at all except big precious-metals stocks like Barrick Gold, Goldcorp and Newmont Mining” while it holds “no Apple, no ExxonMobil, no Procter & Gamble, no General Electric, no Johnson & Johnson”.
Simply put, the major gold miners cited outperformed the blue chips over the last ten years by more than a significant margin. The three golds had ten year compounded return of 11.3 % for Barrick, 13.7% for Newmont, and an impressive 22.2% for Goldcorp.
This contrasts to 7.7% for Exxon, 5.1% for Proctor and Gamble, a scant 1% for Johnson and Johnson, and a NEGATIVE 8% for GE. The only one that outperformed the golds was Apple at an impressive 32.8%.
It seems that Ron Paul has beat the street handily in his picks. He seems to me like presidential material. It is certainly not a disqualifier.

  27. Some thoughts on a more libertarian US foreign policy, while struggling to keep on the topic of Ron Paul:
Given that the US hasn’t “won” a war (even though they haven’t lost that many military battles) since WW2, I don’t see anything wrong with a principled stance of a strong defence without becoming sucked into nation building failures and international circle-jerks (UN).
I’m not sure exactly what Ron Paul would do but immediately after kicking the UN off US soil, I would break the nuclear non-proliferation treaties by arming Japan, Taiwan and South Korea with Nukes (paid for by them) as I withdrew ground troops from Asia.
Private citizens could pay for aid to Israel, Hell, Glenn Beck could arrange events to do that himself. I think Israel and her nasty neighbours (collectively) each get around $3 billion a year from the US. The collapsing EU won’t be throwing money at Palestine any more and Egypt will be lucky to be able to feed its army in the future without Western aid.
The US Navy could and should keep shipping lanes open and destroy any international/privateer efforts trying to impede them.
Europe and the UK would see US ground and air crews come home as well. Anti-missile defence would become the highest priority (mobile or situated mostly on Naval bases/ships). What ever scares the hell out of Moscow and Beijing is likely a good idea.
Iran appears to be a geostrategic nightmare for any ground forces (even if one were predisposed to another ground war/nation building failure) and other than keeping the Straight of Hormuz open with extreme prejudice, I would leave them alone in the knowledge that their efforts at delivery of nukes, once obtained would be met with low probability of success as well as the certainty of nuclear retaliation from Israel or the US, if targeted.
In short, don’t tread on me and I won’t tread on you.

  28. Ron Paul is already past the expected age of death, and he has a guaranteed portion of his portfolio in his Congressional pension, Social Security, and unleveraged real estate.
In his financial condition, it makes little difference whether his excess savings are invested in Greek bonds, an S&P Index Fund, physical gold, cash under the mattress, TIPS, or beans and bullets.
Putting his money where his mouth is is an empty gesture. Wind back his life 50 years, and then see where his money is. Of course, we can’t observe that counterfactual.
Ron Paul supporters are deeply disturbed – not because they are paranoid, ill informed, hopelessly idealistic, or unwaveringly principled. It’s because they claim to know everything about the Constitution but still can’t count electoral votes!

  29. Rule #1: if it is advertised, you don’t want it.
Spend a day at home watching TV, and you’ll see dozens of commercials trying to sell gold. It is a market for suckers. The people selling are cashing in on your fears. Gold is overpriced. Volatility might keep it high a while longer, but it is going to fall hard.
The issue isn’t whether a gold bug happened to be right in the past ten years. What was their risk adjusted rate of return? Take a look at other ten year periods when gold tanked.
Diversify and play for the long haul. Rebalance to safer assets when you get older. Nobody consistently beats the market wihout taking on higher risk and getting lucky.
The fact of the matter is that if Ron Paul predicted this, he should have bought real estate in 2002 and sold it in 2006, then sell everything short in 2007. It is easy to play Monday morning quarterback in finance.

  30. Alex Jones is bat shit crazy.
If you apply that same logic to the loony left anyone that has interview on CNBC in the past 5 years is a communist.
What conspiracy theory has Ron Paul publicly endorsed?

  31. canned goods and nine-millimeter rounds
And in addition I’d suggest… .223, 7.62×39, .45 ACP, .38 SP +P+, .357 Mag and some .380 ACP as well so as to have a ‘balance portfolio’.
    .

  32. Lots of comments here saying Ron Paul is “crazy”.
I’m gonna repost Mike in Calgary one more time as some of you can’t seem to get how “crazy” this guy is:

    I’ll add one more:
    War of drugs = Gone

I think I’m with crazy Ron Paul.

    War on drugs = Gone
    ————-
People who think those are the actions of someone who is ‘batshit crazy’ are simply demonstrating their ignorance of the true meaning of the term.
Sounds more like they’re threatened by the truth.

  34. You’re not batshit crazy if you want any of those things.
You’re batshit crazy if you think you’re going to get and keep most of those things.
The fact of the matter is that more than half the nation is plugged into the Matrix and they are going to resent being unplugged. Oh, and did I tell you they vote too?
Obama, Pelosi, and Reid overreached their grasp. Some of their moonbat laws will survive Republican control, others won’t. But we shouldn’t return the favor by giving back the House in 2015 because we tried to enact this laundry list.
Abortion is abominable, but too many people either want it or don’t care to change the law.
Gun control has never had much teeth except in places where most of us don’t live.
PBS, sure. UN, sorry but we aren’t going to leave or defund them. We are having too much fun spying on them in NY.
Bureaucracy ain’t going nowhere. It’s a fact of life that all governments are filled with bureaucrats. Ours has laws protecting it.
Cradle to grave welfare is already gone. It’s been gone.
In case you missed it, both parties seem to want the votes of immigrants. We rather like avoiding those onerous minimum wage and OSHA laws, and they work hard.
We are not going to legalize drugs in your lifetime. Do some drugs and you care less about all of the above.
It’s damned easy to say “gone.” It’s quite another to get 51% of the House, 61% of the Senate, the President, five members of the Supreme Court, the majority in each of 50 state legislatures and governors, and an angry electorate many of whom don’t share your ideals to make them “gone.”
Why, it ONLY took a civil war to end a minor disagreement over slavery!
Yes, if you believe you or Ron Paul can make government swallow this sunshine and shit these rainbows, you are batshit crazy.
I’m not being cynical. I just recall learning to count in second grade. We live in a representative republic where we occasionally do this thing called “voting.” That “voting” thing frequently goes horribly wrong. And sometimes when it goes right, it unexpectedly goes horribly wrong. And then it goes horribly wrong again.
Or would you rather live in North Korea where decison making is easy?

  35. I’ve supported Ron Paul for years but find it curious when I bring this up in a political discussion with other physicians. Then again, they probably think I’m crazy as well as Libertarian physicians seem to be quite rare in Canada. I don’t think Ron Paul has a chance if he ran for president, but I’m glad that his ideas are out there.
The basement full of 9 mm rounds is a very unbalanced portfolio. I balance mine with 7.62×35, 7.62×51, 30-06, .223, 6.5×55, .303 British, and a bit of .50 cal. And of course there’s the 30,000 rounds of .22 LR for target practice. Working on the cellar of canned food bit. Also, ones portfolio shouldn’t be in one spot but rather geographically distributed with strategic portions buried where the Gestapo can’t find it if we enter a SHTF scenario.

  36. Reginald: Paul didnt need to jump in and out of hot sectors to get a return. He was in on gold when gold was stupid and no one wanted it. That takes some serious balls my freind. (go bet the farm on RIM today if you have them)
    And he was proven correct.
As for his ME policy, I tend to side with Beck. As Israel goes so goes the West. Israel must be defended – Paul is wrong on that critical account.
