Christmas can be a difficult time for some people, a seasonal reminder of dearly loved ones now departed or of hard financial circumstances. In tonight’s sweet but somewhat melancholy Christmas song, the singer, struggling to keep real-world trouble and loss at bay, consoles her younger sister with such promises as her heart can provide, and tries to reassure herself, too, that persevering kinship and love will rise to the spirit of the season and somehow hold the day. From the 1944 film Meet Me In St. Louis, here’s Judy Garland’s touching performance of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.

  1. For those who may be interested in this sort of thing, I have added my new Beef Noodle Soup recipe to The Sagacious Iconoclast. It includes labeled input & output photographs, a components manifest which includes both weight & volumetric measurements, a detailed list of processing methodology instruction steps, and a temporal chart showing how the processing steps can be easily overlaid.

  10. More on the very, very special hypocrisy of the very, very hip, from Justin Paulette’s Washington Times article Defining art down:
    “A good share of conservative commentators have avoided remarking on the Smithsonian scandal involving the gay-themed ‘Hide/Seek’ exhibit featuring a video of ants crawling over a bloody, crucified Christ, among other lewd, sado-masochistic porn displays. There was no need to comment because it all had been said before. The cowards and hypocrites who constitute the chattering-class activists of the art world dogmatically avoid offending those corners of society deeply in need of critical reflection, such as Islam and the Middle East, or considered sacrosanct, such as feminism and racial/ethnic/sexual minorities, under the banner of tolerance and diversity. Yet these same noble paragons ruthlessly and intentionally insult Christians and everyone with a modicum of taste and decency, all the while praising their double standard as speaking truth to power.”
    When the Smithsonian pulled the exhibit after a complaint by the Catholic League, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts released a statement:
    “Such blatant censorship is unconscionable … we cannot stand by and watch the Smithsonian bow to the demands of bigots who have attacked the exhibition out of ignorance, hatred and fear.”

Let’s test their sincerity: I suggest the Smithsonian proudly present an exhibition intentionally offensive and deeply degrading toward women, gays, blacks, liberals and the like while praising the Catholic Church, conservative leaders, the military and religious morality. Let’s call it a socio-psychological reflection upon modern perceptions of diversity or something meaningless like that. Then let’s see the Warhol Foundation rush to its defense when the offended groups demand removal and accompanying mea culpas. Today’s anti-censorship warriors would have to be roused from their slavering frenzy just to reverse their ‘mission to defend freedom of expression wherever and whenever it is under attack.’ They would claim it wasn’t really art or something equally foolish, call for censorship (under a different name) and immediately begin feeling superior again…”

    With more barnacles on hulls, the ships will burn more fuel so the ministers then get to whine and drip about the increased emissions of ships and the increased cost of goods from the extra fuel that needs to be burned.

  24. Vit, I love good homemade soups. This is the one I have been preparing a couple times a month for my wife and I, and only to be enjoyed once the girls are asleep. The bones are the special ingredient and I fortunately am able to get the right ones from my butcher with the kindest demeanor on earth.     Remember that video I made for you where I was urging Larry King to look past your hideous problems and think of you as a human being, however hard that may be to do at times? You should be grateful for people like me.
    And it’s actually the “process step” arm of the chart I’m having a problem with. I don’t see why #5 shouldn’t be #3. Also, they sell soup in cans.

Technically, Black Mamba, I used a can of Campbell’s beef consommé and a box of Campbell’s chicken bouillon in that recipe, as can be clearly seen from the labeled inputs photograph, so you won’t get any complaints from me about canned soup. It’s just that, the way I see it, canned soups are just another ingredient, so then to be further combined with whatever other lovely munchies and flavours as may tickle one’s fancy (as Jennifer Paterson might say).

    Isn’t it interesting that when the democrat journalist says that the unemployment dollars that are doled out (4 billion I think he said) gets spent in the economy, he neglects to consider that it was ‘stolen’ from the very same people before it was given back?
    It is so silly. It’s like saying that if you take ten dollars out of your wallet and put it in your pocket you will be ten dollars richer.
    There is no logic in the Liberal mind whatsoever. That is why when we call them stupid, it is actually true and not just a random insult.

    I’d like to expand upon what you said and take it a step further. Consider for a moment a successful businessman who built a company from the ground up and then repeated the process again with another and another. A perfect example of this out here in BC, where I live, is Jimmy Pattison. He was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth but worked hard, made some tough but correct business decisions, and now is one of the richest people in the province. I have no idea how many people his many companies gainfully employ but I’d bet it’s in the tens of thousands.
    Now, imagine Pattison were to become BC’s Premier. He’d want to do the right thing for the long-term financial health of the province so I imagine he’d carry out similar steps as he has done with the companies he’s acquired: Cut the fat and make sure every remaining employee works efficiently and productively.
    Would the liberal journalists here give him ANY credit for that? Not a tiny bit, I’d predict. ALL they’d be concerned about is how much more each Ministry was being given each & every year. If he “dared” to keep budgets the same or even cut them, he’d be slaughtered by these same journalists as being cruel, ruthless, and “only concerned with big business”.
    The sad fact is that ALL politicians are in a trap from Day 1, because the news reporters are anything but “reporters”. Instead, they are news MAKERS, who have a very specific Leftist world view. And if you don’t spend, spend, spend and redistribute the wealth (killing people’s incentives by the way) then you are a bad person.

  49. I love ‘Meet Me In St. Louis’.
    Every year, the Mrs. and I sit down on Christmas Eve and watch it after the crowds go home. It goes back to our first Christmas away from home up in Whitehorse when we were both feeling a little lonely.
    I can’t wait until my little one is old enough to watch it with us.
