Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here are The Middlecreek Swingers, from Mt. Pleasant Mills, Pennsylvania, performing some excellent Square Dancing ¤ at the Pennsylvania Farm Show (5:00). Mable and Alice are hilarious, and the split and swing at 04:20 just cracks me up: “ooh my goodness” 😉

    So, here’s my question – as a westerner born and raised, I feel a strong affiliation with flag, (and in a secular way) queen, and (in a real way) country.
    I don’t think I’m alone – probably many of us out here
    What is the situation east of the Manitoba/Ontario border?
    I remember talking to a guy in Halifax once – he was a conservative – a pretty lonely guy (politically)

    Nice precision, I must say!
    What did this remind me of? Well, going to the Western Deveopment Museum in Saskatoon back in the 1970s – and thinking as a young whipper-snapper – who cares about all these old machines? And who cares about these old guys driving them around?
    I am much wiser now, thanks.
    And thanks to the “old guys” who drove those machines around . . . .

  19. Thanks, vitruvius – I loved it. Square dancing is great – a very special part of the great American life – of community, sharing, farming, slogging through the hard times and then..that celebration in the barn dances.
    Yes, the umbrella was special. But pink tractors – ahh, that was neat.

    Say, you know, I wonder whether or not the umbrella shtick is a tool they use to provide a “center of gravity”, that is to say, a planar geometrical reference point, constant across multiple discordant stages, for coordinating their performance?

  23. ET and Viruvius – I stand in awe of my relatives – who are farmers
    They accept what the “gods” small g – will deliver, through rain, hail, etc
    I work hard too, but maybe not as hard as they do.
    if someone told me – “they will put your yearly salary on a truck on the wrong side of your mountain range – and it has a 30% chance of reaching you” – I wouldn’t view my profession too kindly
    Yet that is what farming is!!!!

  27. As a young lad I loved to stop by the ‘blacksmith’ shop in town. Old time farmers would gather and swap tales of driving old farm equipment. Case steam engines that turned left when you steered right. Old combines pulled by horses. Of course these conversations took place at coffee while the men worked on the old John Deere ‘one lungers’, Stout green Olivers, bright red International Farmalls. Even brighter yellow Minneapolis Molines. Some spoke fondly of their Field Marshals that were started with a shot gun shell and were unique because the engine could run forward or backward. Few spoke of the new tan coloured diesel Case and deep red Massey Fergusons, their dealerships were competition to the blacksmith. Anyone mentioning Allis Chalmers, Fords (except the little Ford 9N) or Deutz’s were laughed at as those weren’t real tractors.
    Did I mention I am an old farm tractor fan?

  28. Not just an NDP government in NS, but an NDP majority. The PCs got knocked all the way to third place, a resounding rejection of that clown Rodney MacDonald.
    Could be a very long four years for the Bluenose province.

  29. That’s old Stan Reynold’s place, Syncro, god rest his soul. I used to hang out there as a little boy. I think, maybe, his tiny three-cylinder dozer was my favourite, but my dad loved the ’38 Cord. I’ve got pictures of me there, 45 years ago, somewhere. Anyway, it’s a heritage site, now.

  30. Bernie: the green tractor with the enclosed engine is an Oliver. Most farmers removed the engine cowlings which allowed the engines to cool more effectively on a hot day. The Olivers also had a roll up canvas ‘blind’ that could be raised up to cover the front of the radiator during real cold weather operation.

    We flew down from Fort Mac when I was a kid to look at Stan’s stuff….before it was a museum..
    I guess you got the up close as a local. Lucky bugger. That is a superb collection of pioneer innovation and engineering.

    it was a worthy addition to SDA’s Late Nite Radio.
    I think the idea is… get taken to see something out of the norm, just stretch your legs a bit, take a walk outside your comfort zone…
    That big big big pipe organ, Spiller/ live, stuff you just don’t hear here everyday. however, I tried, I failed, I can’t do the old time detective series.
    I just tune out, and head straight to my favorite latina store.

  38. Yer right Synco, I didn’t mention the Cockshutts either for fear of untoward sniggers. My family was Oliver bound. Dad told me that one day in the mid ’30’s Grandpa got the car stuck in a snow bank and so they decided that they would fire up the old Oliver 88. It had not run all winter and the temperature was -40. The tractor was in a shed and it was so stiff that Grandpa and Dad stood on the crank and pushed against the shed rafters just to get the engine to turn over. When the crank hit the bottom of its first swing the old tractor roared to life. Grandpa went on to own a couple of Oliver 99’s as well. I once tried to drive one but my boyish muscles didn’t have enough strength to turn the steering wheel.

    For some reason I took that to mean that you were saying that there were old guys and girls.
