A video taken inside a secret Syrian facility last summer convinced the Israeli government and the Bush administration that North Korea was helping to construct a reactor similar to one that produces plutonium for North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, according to senior U.S. officials who said it would be shared with lawmakers today.
The officials said the video of the remote site, code-named Al Kibar by the Syrians, shows North Koreans inside. It played a pivotal role in Israel’s decision to bomb the facility late at night last Sept. 6, a move that was publicly denounced by Damascus but not by Washington.

Well I must quote Mcain “bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran”to the tune of Barbera-Ann apoligies to the Beach Boys.
So why is Iran allowed to proceed with their ambitions, and Syria can’t? What is the difference? Are the Syrians considered nuttier that the Iranians? That would be hard to believe. Just askin’.
I wonder what the video looked like from the nose camera in the bomb that removed this reactor from becoming operational.
Now that would “cool TV”. Wonder if they flew it in a window or through a door.
Or maybe they came in via the roof 🙂

Saddams WMD ended up in Syrian, this is so obvious even the MSM should have picked up on it.
“So why is Iran allowed to proceed with their ambitions, and Syria can’t?”
Darned good question, Sounder, and one that mystifies me.
Thrioughout the Global War on Terror, left-liberals have again and again offered up misleading and deceitful parallels with our national tragedy in Southeast Asia. But one parallel with Viet Nam that is apropos — and profoundly disturbing — is the extent to which nations around Iraq that connive to kill our sons and daughters are allowed to hide behind their borders while sending fighters, homicide bombers, munitions, and money to support those who wish the bloodshed to never end. Targeting training camps, safe havens, and transit points in Iran and Syria would be a powerful compliment to the Surge in annihilating these thugs. If we’d done in three years ago, the Surge might never have been necessary.
Sending the message that you can’t play Olly-Olly-Oxen-Free with your borders in attacking Americans is a message that desperately needs to be sent. Thug nations like Iran, Syria and North Korea cynically ignore diplomacy and peaceful overtures from the West. They are much more attentive when the F-16s are overhead and the Tomahawk missiles start to fall.
Syria is closer to Israel, Sounder. They can fly over there and bomb the hell out of any Syrian installation they want without asking mother-may-I from the Americans. Without re-fueling too, I think.
Handy!
syria being about 200 miles wide and next door, Id say yes
Did you know that Condoleeza Rice was against Israel bombing the site? It would “destablize” the ME she thought. She is a beneficiary of affirmative action, I feel.
Sounder: America is afraid of Iran. I keep reading rumours that the US is planning an attack. I LOL every time I encounter this rumour. After the enormous f*** of Iraq they don’t have the appetite for it.
Sadly, Bush may yet best (worst?) Carter as the worst president in US history. I still like the man, however.
I keep thinking Condi ruined his presidency. But really, he’s to blame for letting Condi ruin his presidency.
Jimmy Carter may have to go to North Korea and make a non-proliferation peace all over again.
“destablize” the ME she thought.”
That’s a good one, coming from her. She should have ‘thought’ harder. I can’t recall any region so unstable as this one is right now. Lets see… Islamic nutcases in Iran are in the process of getting the sshhhh, “bomb”, Israel is surrounded by rabid dogs, vowed to it’s destruction, being armed at an alarming pace by sshhhh, the Islamic nutcases in Iran, who stir and mix some more cocktails for the sshhhh, “bomb”, throw in a few billion US, Canadian and European guilt dollars, you know, to perpetuate all the previous stuff and what do ya got? Stability isn’t a word I would use.
File that under No Sh!t Sherlock ……
The US should have Bomber Iran to dust after the “revolution” and the hostage taking.
Thank Peanuts Carter for that !
This has more to do with Israeli concerns than US ones.
I guarantee that the Israelis will have built a comprehensive intelligence picture from a number of sources* before deciding to OK such an attack.
We will likely never publicly know some of that intelligence for rather obvious and academic reasons. It’s entirely probable that the Americans are also not privy to all the Israeli intelligence.
As someone else noted, this operation was well within the range of independent Israeli initiative and capabilities. They assessed the threat, then made the political decision to “go for it.”
More power to them.
* The video is probably but one source in a collateral intelligence picture.
Sounder,
“So why is Iran allowed to proceed with their ambitions, and Syria can’t?”
What makes you think an attack won’t happen on Iran?
Personally, if these big oil discoveries in Brazil pan out, the US will have a much smaller interest in the middle east so will be much less likely to be in there trying to keep the powder-keg from lighting.
The analysis I read went along the lines that the world will be a much more violent place when the US no longer has to care if the fools in the ME are killing each other. That will fall to China – who is currently attempting to deliver bullets to Zimbabwe.
“…That will fall to China – who is currently attempting to deliver bullets to Zimbabwe.” “AND bombers to the Sudanese Govt responsible for genocide in Darfur.
(Sudan is developing oil and coal deposits with Chinese money, for export to China. With China, no regime is too evil to support, when geo-political or economic interests are involved.)
Warwick, I don’t think the US will attack Iran, at least not under Bush. The Americans are shell shocked (media poisoned) into thinking they are the most evil nation on earth with the most horrific president in history and would impeach him given any opportunity. Therefore, I think it will be left to Israel. What I don’t understand is why Iran has got off for so long, while Syria was smacked so quickly (it appears).
I believe you are correct on your prediction if and when the US withdraws from the ME. These people were born of, and for, violence and war and that’s what there will be, as soon as Big Satan goes home.
My above URL on the Chinese bombers sold to Sudan doesn’t seem to be working. Try copy and pasting-

Israel is surrounded by rabid dogs, vowed to it’s destruction, being armed at an alarming pace by sshhhh, the Islamic nutcases in Iran
and shhhhhh, being armed [West Bank directly, Hamas who share in Fatah welfare, indirectly] by the US, trained by the CIA. Swinging door between Fatah security (sic) forces and al Aqsa Martyr brigades. Having considered his own ultimatum in the Bush Doctrine, Bush has chosen the “evil doers”.
The difference between Syria and Iran is addressed by analogy in this article, the difference between Iraq in 1981 and Iran.

The Israelis knocked out this reactor as it was within easy strike range and presented a ‘do-able target’ without refueling requirements.
The Izzys are not going to go down easily; and will dominate their sphere of influence without too much soul searching. In light of the Hezbollah 2006 attacks very much in the Israeli public mind, no one should be too surprised at this outcome.

Iran is very large and as noted not exactly right next door. Iran also learned from the bombing of the Iraq reactor by the IAF and have disturbed their nuke industry around and hardened those that they can’t hide. Funny enough it is the threat of conventional and unconventional forces that protect Iranian nukes. Anyone doubting Iran’s intent in becoming a Nuke power is smoking to much grass. But the Iranians have other targets in their sights beside Israel, Russia, US and Saudi Arabia being some of them. Iran wants to the regional superpower and use it’s geopolitical position, oil money combined with conventional forces, nuke missiles and unconventional forces to impose it’s will on the countries around it. The good news is that the Iranian economy is imploding and the average people there don’t want war as to many remember the 10 year war.
Now how Syria could have believed that it was going to get away with building a secret reactor is beyond me. If peaceful nuke power was their real goal they could have gone down a completely different and above board route. Mind you the Syrians live in their own little mucked up world.
if the chinless man from Syria says it is raining, you can bet the bank it’s sunny outside.
Believe in nothing, nothing, that comes from Syria.
just took a gander over to the media arm of the liberal party, CBCpravda website. this story is hidden down on the second page of world news.
On top, Liberals call for RCMP investigation of Conservative Spending, good to know nothing ever changes,
CBCpravda , All Liberal All the Time.
Syria was trying to fast-track its nuke program by getting nuke material direct from NK rather than relying on centrifuges. The Israelis took it out because they were thus a lot closer than Iran to having a bomb. Estimates vary as to how long it will take Iran to make enough bomb-grade meaterial but no-one I have read or heard says it will be anytime soon – ie. more than 12 months at least. As Iran gets closer to the bomb-capable point, rest assured that they too will be ‘dis-armed’.
When will the warm fuzzies ever learn how many ennemies we really have & who are TRUE friends are?
I don’t think until the sword is at their throat.
Isreal is our best buddy there. To go along with the “lets nuke the jews” party of Islam, is not only folly but crying out for death.
Thank G-D someone bombed the facility. One wonders where there are any more ?
let em fly
saddams extra treefort
material?….
or just more oil for food?
