Lukiwski – Stop Apologizing

In today’s Ottawa Citizen yours truly has a few comments quoted near the end.

Almost everyone has a skeleton or two inside their closet. But keeping them there, locked safely in the past, has never been more difficult for people in public life, as Tom Lukiwski discovered this week.
The Conservative MP apologized again yesterday for the anti-gay screed he uttered on videotape, 17 years ago, in a political backroom in Saskatchewan.
“I will spend the rest of my career and my life trying to make up for those comments,” he told the House of Commons.

In other news, Svend Robinson was released on parole this week.
Lukiwski, shut up – you’ve said enough. Stop being a chew toy. Give it a month, and even Google will have trouble remembering your name. You’ve spent enough years in political life to know the truth behind “there, but for the grace of camcorder…”
Charles Adler and I are on the same page;

Do I want to spend hours chatting about what a couple of drunken hacks laughed about in private 16 years ago? No. They were getting stupid with each other and some other fellow travelers. They were stupid to tape it and stupid not to trash the tape years ago.
Would it be a stupid move for me to get into public life? Yes it would be.
My honest approach to such stupidity would be covered by certain media types as enabling sexism, racism, homophobia, etc. Why would any intelligent person want to participate in such an intellectually dumbed-down environment as today’s political circus?

Indeed. The chances that anyone who has survived the eyeball-scratching of internal party politics to rise to a position of national prominence without uttering a few politically nuclear epithets is near zero.
This type of indignation is highly selective. For example, I’m described in the Citizen as running a controversial blog, yet there’s a NDP riding association president in Saskatchewan who lists among his “daily reads” the Number One Source On The Progressive Net For The Word “C*nt”[TM].
To date, the NDP’s official party net nanny hasn’t noticed, You’d have thunk he’d have found it whilst surfing. Someone ought to tell him before Lorne Calvert hears about it in the Leg.

  1. The Canadian political scene is a Gong Show. While the NDP were in power in Sask. instead of jailing Marc Emery for 2 months for passing a joint they could have set up a province wide compassion club network to help the chronically sick and dying, many from aids. Instead it was War on Drugs as usual, yet they had a policy nationally to decrim or even legalize cannabis! Shame on all of the Sask NDP for allowing the sickest to suffer in agony and silence!

  3. Trying to figure out if this story will “have legs” as the MSN says…I’d accept his apology, and he seems sincere in his commitment to continue to set things right. A very responsible attitude, accepting responsibility, be accountable in the next election. One item that bothered me on the news yesterday was Mike Duffy, CTV, stating that he knows of more than half a dozen gay MP’s who refuse to come out of the closet because of this kind of attitude in Canadian society. Why would anyone tell Mike Duffy they were closeted gay? Why is he keeping track?

  4. Ohhhh poor Robert Fife , perhaps he just had a bad day , and in frustration blurted out “knuckle draggers” … you know … perhaps finishing up at the urinal , he was late for the interview with Lloyd Roberts and was in such a hurry that he accidentally peed on his shoes … you know how it happens and you know how terrible that would be … kind of like a bad hair day !

  5. The National Press Gallery has declared war on PMSH and the Conservative government, if that isn’t obvious. He dared to usurp their control of his press conferences, and they’ve been after him ever since. The Liberals provide the spin and the national media parrots it.
Expect more mountains to be manufactured from mole hills and the parade of trumped of “scandal” to continue. Meanwhile, most Canadians look on and wonder “why is this even news”?

  6. Oddly enough, the Ottawa Citizen hasn’t published my comment yet. Just like CTV hasn’t. Isn’t that odd.

  7. Two points: 1)would it not be simple courtesy and gentlemanly behavior to return the videotape unviewed, as you would a misdirected letter, rather than calling a press conference 2) Joy McPhail has been prominent in calling for blood on behalf of the NDP. One recalls, not so many years ago, Joy and some other leftist haridins put a wind up dancing prick on the desk of an openly gay Liberal member of the BC Legislature. Oh, but that’s just girls having fun.

  8. I like this site, I like the conservatives, and so on. But I think Lukiwski should be turfed. He is clearly a complete ass, and is not someone who should be in caucus. It doesn’t matter how the story was dredged up. It doesn’t matter that the NDP are hypocrites. I’d rather they reinstate that lunatic Garth Turner than keep the homophobe Lukiwski.
Kate can go on and on about how they should ignore Lukiwski because he’s on the right side, everybody does bad shit, whatever. Sooner or later, when you use that argument too often, you don’t stand for anything anymore. Well, for me it’s all not about us vs. them, and to me the guy crossed the line. It’s about doing the right thing. It’s not the usual mindless “Conservatives good! NDP bad! Liberals bad! Grunt.”
    set you free :
‘Let those among you without sin cast the first stone.’
Give me a break. Talk about overkill. Now you guys are sounding like Liberals. Nothing is wrong, we cannot judge, everything is relative, there is no right or wrong, bla bla bla. What horseshit. Lukiwski should not be stoned or shunned or whetever. But he should be tossed out of caucus.

  9. Let’s see here.
Christian’s,Americans ,Jews, Muslims, Paki’s,Chink’s, Indian’s, Commies,Blacks, Retards, are all made fun of on a daily basis.
    My question is this.
If all the people of the world are made fun of on a dialy basis depending on where you live, why should homo’s be any exception.
Homosexuals are just like everyone else, aren’t they?
Then they should take the comments of people just like everyone else does.

  10. Tom Robinson:
“Then they should take the comments of people just like everyone else does.”
    1. Not when coming from a minister of parliament.
    2. Nobody says that Christians,Jews, and others are spreaders of disease, except for the Palestinians talking about Israelis. And isn’t this the site that mocks Palestinians for these types of comments? Ha ha, so funny, let’s all joke about gay filth! Ha ha!
    3. Nobody is advocating that Lukiwski be attacked, prosecuted, or hounded in any way. But he should be tossed from caucus. The guy is supposed to be representing Canada and representing his consituents. I can just imagine what the gay people in his riding are thinking.
You guys will twist yourself into pretzels to defend the indefensible.

  11. I gotta agree with Kate though, Lukiwski should stop apologizing. Doing it once is enough. After that, he is just playing into this political ploy that the Sask. NDP have engineered.

  12. I was in Toronto last summer when a colleague asked me what I’ll be doing in T.O.When I said something to the affect that I’ll be catching up on some sleep she responded with,”oh you should go to the parade”.What parade? The gay pride parade,it’s only the biggest one in Canada!I politely responded that I didn’t know this but I was staying in my hotel room anyways. This is where her lefty intolerance kicked in.Oh, you’re just scared.Scared of what, that I might find that I’m attracted to men, that the next time I see a man wearing a some short shorts on the beach I’m gonna say, look at that hairy ass,I gotta get me some of that. These are the things I wanted to say to her.Instead I told her that I’d prefer to watch the hockey game in my room than watch scantily leather clad men necking on floats.I got a homophobic sigh in return.

  13. “It’s good to hear from a perfect human being such as yourself.”
I agree with sf. I’ve just stepped out of a bath of bleach, my sins are cleansed.
Jaysus, I would never run in politics. I’d have every minority and gender trampling the media to hang me for what I said SIXTEEN years ago!
I apologize if I’ve left out any person or persons that I probably slagged or made fun of, my memory isn’t what it used to be.

  14. I’d agree, if his antics were caught on tape since being elected. But that’s 17 years ago. If we start holding politicians to that standard, we can just frog march all of them out of the commons right now.
It’s an unattainable goal, and in addition, an undesirable one, to invite only the completely pure of PC sin into the public policy debate. In fact, it’s dangerous. Those are the very people who will extend their puritan viewpoints on what is allowable thought even further than they already have.

  15. Right, he’s apologized to all the homosexuals who may have been offended and all the perfect people who never uttered a discriminating word or offended anyone in their lives so it’s case closed. There’s nothing more he can do or needs to do.
We’ll sit back and listen to Goodale, Brison and Company calling for his head until they find some more stuff in the garbage to rave about.
Goodale and Brison together reminds us of Income Trust leaking so it may not be wise for those two to team up on this one.
    Talk about PERFECT hypocrites.

  16. There have been a few times when i was watching the news or Mike Duffy that bubbly bob seemed a bit wobbly . On one occasion he appeared to have a bit of a hard time weaving around on his stool.I have worked in a few bars. The expression ” a glow on ” comes to mind.

  17. Here’s my prediction … Monday’s Question Period goes something like this:
Dion: “Mr. Speaker, on this side of the house, we believe in tolerance … blah blah blah … Will the Prime Minister do the right thing, and fire the Parliamentary Secretary to the House Leader ?”
Harper: “Mr. Speaker, the Parliamentary Secretary to the House Leader has tendered his resignation, which I have accepted”
Questions 2 to 8: “blah blah blah, do the right thing and fire the Parliamentary Secretary …”
Harper or Van Loan:”Mr. Speaker, the member opposite must have a hearing or comprehension problem. Or else he can’t think fast on his feet …”

  18. We don’t have any Hollywood “stars” in Canada so Fife and the Ottawa Press gallery are simply paparazzi who glom onto our politicians instead of movie stars.
Lukiwski is our Brittany Spears (except he said he’s sorry) and this is really a story for The Enquirer. So likewise Canada’s Enquirer is CTV et al.
Competent people will indeed be saying “”there, but for the grace of camcorder…”. Competence will avoid politics and public life. Incompetence will grow in government by default. Thus we’ll be getting more and more grist for the paparazzis, it’s a vicious circle.
The solution: shrink government as fast as possible. The less government becomes involved in our lives, the fewer stories for the paparazzis. That’s why paparazzis like Fife want the Liberals back, they want more grist … even if it’s Grits. They know our hidden agenda is to shrink their sleazy story sources.

  19. sf:
How may gay voters live in Likiwski’s constituency?
During the next election, would they step into the ballot box and before casting their vote, say: ‘I’m voting against this candidate because of the future my natural-born children will face?’
    Just wondering.

  20. Not only should you vote in the poll at Global National, but you should write a little note to the writer of the story
    ( mdesouza@canwest.com )
and point out some of the homophobic remarks some of the liberal MP’s have made much more recently than 16 years ago.
Thanks to Tony at Tony’s viewpoint for pointing them out to me.
“Homosexuality is statistically abnormal, it’s physically abnormal and it’s morally immoral.” Liberal MP Tom Wappel – 2006
    ——————————————————————–
“It’s sort of corny, but a constituent phoned up and said, ‘God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.’ “If it’s two adults, where do we stop? What about a grandma that wants to marry her grandson or an uncle that wants to marry his niece? Where do you stop?” – Liberal MP Roy Cullen – 2005
We need to call these idiot MSM story writers on their biased – one sided stories.

  21. Tory Watcher
“when a University dropout with no professional experience or qualification like little Pierre Poilievre is a “rising star” in the governing party.
    God help us all.”
Considering the crap coming for our beloved Canadian Universities the past few decades I would see this a s quite a positive
You’re right, god help us but for an entirely different reason.

  22. I note that Kate a few posts above called the Left’s oppressive viewpoints “puritan”.
My, but isn’t it ironic? Now it’s the Left who’s “puritan”. Decades of use of that slur against non-Leftists and the religiously devout is already turning on them and biting their arses.

  23. I see above that commentors are now providing examples of Liberal MPs uttering “anti-gay” remarks publicly.
Like hell the MSM will make a stink over this.
They could have chosen to ignore the NDP’s providing that old tape of the drunken rant of Lukiwski. But they took it and went all moonbatshit with it.
What about all the “hateful” utterances against “gays” by Liberal MPs? What does Scott Brison think of all that?
And like hell Robert Fife will call Liberals “knuckle draggers”.

  24. “The guy is supposed to be representing Canada and representing his consituents. I can just imagine what the gay people in his riding are thinking.”
    They’re thinking:
Fantastic! I hated the fact that the CPC won my riding during the last election because they wanted to re-vote on the issue of gay marriage. And, although I’m too proud to be seriously offended by a comment made by a drunken idiot 17 years ago, this is a perfect opportunity to call for him to step down as an MP and have another chance at electing someone who is more palatable to me.

  25. KS…and the rest of us will collectively yawn.Do you speak for the gay community,if not, then, just like Fife you’re spreading your opinion as fact.

  26. Sean S. is a riding assoc. president? Gawd, no wonder the NDP lost in Sask.
Sean thinks three quarters of every dollar in the universe should belong to the government, and it shines in everything he posts.
Way to link to that barf bag Canadian Cynic there Sean. If that’s a daily read for you, you should shut the hell up about anyone else.

  27. 319.(2)Wilful promotion of hatred
Every one who, by communicating statements, other than in private conversation, wilfully promotes hatred against any identifiable group is guilty of
(a)an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years; or (b) an offence punishable on summary conviction.
    Defences
No person shall be convicted of an offence under subsection (2)
    (a)if he establishes that the statements communicated were true;

  28. Actually, ks, it’s incorrect to assume that because the MP is ‘representing his riding’ that he is merely a mirror of ALL opinions. That would be impossible.
After all, in his riding, there are people who both support and reject gays/lesbians. How can anyone support both since they are contrary? There’ll be some who are Liberals and some NDP and some Conservatives. Is he just someone to pass along their beliefs to parliament, contrary though they all are?
An MP is not an empty pipeline along which the opinions of his electorate come tumbling along, in all their contrary nature. He’s supposed to make informed decisions, within his party platform. And listen to the diverse debates within his riding. That’s as much as we can expect of an MP.
Tony – thanks for the information. The santimonious leftism of the Liberals/NDP and the MSM has moved into the totalitarian stage, where they consider that they have the right to purify the people – because they have self-defined themselves as pure.

  29. Kate’s comments where dead on target in the Ottawa Citizen.
As for the NDP releasing this Tape. They had better learn how to dig bunkers. They have birthed a monster with this new slump towards a more vicious neo-Puritan purge, with them caught in the very ruse inflated climate of their own making. One that will haunt them long after this.
I think Lukiwski should resign just from suffering from a limpness factor alone. Not to mention being a boot licker willing to beg his manhood away, cringing before his enemies . Denouncing his own to placate the liars.
Remember Jimmy Cartier. It was all over for him when the Rabbit swam across a pond to attack him & he cringed too. How much more so will this do to him? When you become a joke, your dead politically.
It would have been so much easier to have stood up for himself? Dead man walking. (In the political sense.)

  30. A couple of points.
    1. Hopefully the lesson learned (like the boys who were in Somalia)is that you never keep video or pictures of anything that could be used by leftarded bigots. NEVER!
    2. If I hear one more liberal blather on about what a big deal this is(their caucus has as many, if not more “homophobes”, whatever the f@#$ that means), I am surely going to lose it.
    3. In all actuality, he said nothing wrong, and the choice should be left to his constituents come next election(and if the idiot libranos are truly upset, bring down the gov’t, and let’s get it on!)

  31. I was going to email Mr. L. yesterday and say, No more apologizing, but thought his inbox is most likely already full of suggestions like that.
Hopefully he will know after reading the article in the Citizen that most of Kate’s readership agree with her.
If he knew the support he has, do you think that would help him to stiffen the old spine? He over-apologized and heavens it was sad to hear him grovelling.
He has nothing to be sorry for. It was a time now gone and due to PC, gone forever. Like all free speech. (Unless the targets are Jews or Christians, of course.)
Speaking of the misnomer “Gay Parade”, has anyone seen what the San Francisco nutcakes did at Easter? If that doesn’t show that they are mental cases, nothing does. So, Tommy Douglas was right after all and no abject apologies can be expected from Jack et al.

  32. RD “As for the NDP releasing this Tape. They had better learn how to dig bunkers.”
Good point. I think maybe we are seeing the influence on Dipper style by Thomas Mulcair here. He’s a new breed of Dipper. He is a very malicious individual.
As Mulcair goes after Layton who is stalled and the party membership wondering about an NDP wasted vote, we are about to see significant change. Mulcair left a Cabinet position with the Charest government. This guy has bigger plans for himself in Ottawa. More cannibalism on the left as the scraps dry up.

  33. “Every one who, by communicating statements, other than in private conversation…”
Of course the law breads the ‘I’m sensitive, and you have offended me’ whiney complaints.
However ‘private conversation’ should include the private parties, at the office or the home.
Mr. L should have some backbone and use the law itself to fight back against this stupidity.
    OT
Kate you do have a sense of humour…
    “less forest gump…more team america”
    lol
Anyone who has errors trying to post knows what I’m talking about

  34. Will the NDP please let us know where they get their haloes and where they get them polished.
Joy McPhail was involved in a prank in the BC legislature which was vulgar so perhaps she should apologise for that now, again and again.

  35. ndphags are desperate for a scandal trying to clean their devices to escape Tommys agenda. The homos in the msm slurp it up. Lefty politics in Canada.

  36. So, when are we getting an apology from the criminally corrupt Liberal Party of Canada for the uncounted millions they stole from the taxpayer? It’s all nice and well to castigate a CPC member for idiotic comments made two decades or so ago, but how about the liberal filth fessing up for their unmitigated and proven thievery? Funny how the left will bay like hounds at the slightest mistake of their adversaries but refuse to admit the proven criminality in their own midst. Enough already.
I hope all the leftists are proud of their representatives – monkeys flinging their own feces have nothing on the Libs and the NDP.

  37. H.Ryan I don’t speak for the gay community, but I don’t personally know any who weren’t somewhat vocal in their non-support of the CPC last election. Although expressed somewhat poorly my last post was intended to express my complete lack of surprise for those who do claim to speak for the gay community (Egale Canada) calling for Lukiwski to step down.
    Sorry for any confusion.

  38. “H.Ryan I don’t speak for the gay community, but I don’t personally know any who weren’t somewhat vocal in their non-support of the CPC last election.”
Ah yes, KS. Would these guys be the same brainwashed types as you who believed what the Dippers/Fiberals told them during the last election that one of the CPC’s “hidden” agendae was to re-open the SSM debate? Oh. And did you also know that Stephen Harper eats kittens??? With soldiers? On our streets? In Canada?

  39. Sean S. is a riding assoc. president? Gawd, no wonder the NDP lost in Sask. [The Phantom]
    ==================
And in the recent by-elections. Sean in Saskatchewan. Taleban Jack in Ottawa and, I presume, kindred spirits in every other place. I really think their days are numbered. Their bankrupt, sanctimonious crap is so phoney.

  40. Apparently if one points out that the meaning of “phobe” is “irrational fear” and that therefore the term homophobe is a bit stupid, one is branded a racist or some such vile thing, which is just another pointless, baseless, meaningless attempt to cast aspersions which renders the vile thing rather inocuous. Certainly, there are some mental midgets who have foolish ideas about homosexuality, but precious few of those are extremely fearful of those of our fellow citizens whose erotic impulses are directed at persons of the same sex. Some may hate gays, but hate and fear are not the same thing.
Twenty years ago there were still a lot of people who equated homosexuality with pedophilia, but their numbers have drastically declined. People do learn. Attitudes do change. But leftards have difficulty grasping such facts and they have a chronic incapacity to detect nuances, so on and on it goes.

  41. Why do you move out of a place and leave a bunch of video tapes behind?
    Lazy and stupid?

  42. I’d agree, if his antics were caught on tape since being elected. But that’s 17 years ago. If we start holding politicians to that standard, we can just frog march all of them out of the commons right now.
Unless its Robert Byrd or Tommy Douglas. Such consistency.

  43. I am trying to figure out the political dynamics on this one — of course, Libs are going after CPC presumably to gain political points. But — CPC is not likely to lose many votes over this as the gay community are (for the most part) not supporters. It was interesting to see the balanced and objective response by the NDP on Duffy (Friday?) (even the journalists commented on their nuanced response.) Meanwhile the Libs were foaming at the mouth. What comes through for any thinking person is that they are not so much enraged by the comments, but using the incident for their own political gain. I think this is in very bad taste. It is also pretty transparent. They are definitely overdoing their outrage. It makes them look bad. So — could the NDP’s hidden agenda in releasing this tape to make the Libs look like fools. If yes — clever them — looks like it’s working.

  44. VonRock – You don’t really believe that this tape was “left behind” do you? No one is that naeve. The Dippers came into possession of this tape by other – shall we say – mysterious means.
