CHANGE – we can believe in,
WE ARE THE ONES WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR,
Not since the days of JFK and Martin Luther King
have we been inspired to hope and dream this way!
So you have to look at yourself,
Have the cynics thrown you astray?
We’ll be the voice to determine our fate.
We’ve got a chance, We can make it,
With your support,
We’ll be patient,
GET OFF THE COUCH – JOIN ME IN HARMONY!
(sing it with me)

Been there done that with Tommy Obama Douglas and Pierre Obama Trudeau.
Remember when Oprah endorsed him? Saw this over and over on TV:
“HE… IS… THE ONE!!!
HE… IS… THE ONE!!!
HE… IS… THE ONE!!!”
Cringe-inducing. But I have to admit it’s hard not to like the guy.
I’m all teary-eyed! Reminds me of that old 60’s song:
“I’d like to sing the world a song,
Of perfect Har-mo-nee…”
randall g,
I don’t want to be overly hyperbolic, but the 1920s-30s Germans said old Adolph had an incredibly magnetic public personna and speaking style…
I’m not saying that Obama’s a psycho fascist, but that magnetic personalities and speaking abilities don’t necessarily translate into character, substance, wisdom or even knowledge.
IMO, Obama is a glib, facile Empty Suit. (And Hillary is the female equivalent, a glib, platitudinous Empty Dress, if I may invent a word.)
Obama is campaigning on the promise of “change” and if he is elected that’s all that Americans will have left in their pockets – “change”….
He’s good enough to be Prez on The West Wing!
In real life? Not so much
What’s really scary is that the left is so devoid of substance they’re giving Obama the full Monica when they don’t have a clue in hell what his stand on any actual issues are.
Obama is the casebook study of style over substance.
He has no platform except that he’s not white and he speaks well. It’s a meld of identity politics with the personality cult.
I find him very personable but I’m not voting for personable. I want issues. I want answers. Why don’t the left?
Oh c’mon. You people are just upset that Thompson had the worst campaign in recent political history.
Thompson blew, Obama rules.
Actually, Obama has some very clear platforms as can be gleaned from his love-in in Virginia:
1. Universal Healthcare
2. Negotiate with Iran, Syria, etc.
3. Put the Unemployed to work in “green” industries
4. Bring troops home ASAP
5. Reduce CO2 by 80% by 2050
6. Nail the rich with increased taxes
7. Punish corps which invest overseas
8. Give $4000 tuition rebate based on performing specified number of hours of community service.
… You nailed it on the Head Gypsy; he’s the new American Utopian.
Throbbin,
Describe his actual platform. Idiot.
I don’t say he’s not a good candidate. I’m just saying that since we know jack sh*t about the guy I have no reason to think he’d be a good one. I’ll change that opinion once there are tidbits of intel about what he actually stands for one way or the other.
You clearly don’t need this sort of info. You couldn’t decipher it anyway.
Dave, I’ve seen Triumph of the Will. There are some rhetorical similarities but I’m not worried about a fascist resurgence in the USA.
Throbbin, nobody cares about Thompson, he’s history. Why don’t you jot down a few of Obama’s specific policy ideas that you like most?
Paul,
If that is his platform, no wonder he isn’t talking much about it (and his media fan club isn’t either.)
Beware the political youth molester!
Beanie Obama
A a chicken in every pot, a windmill in every yard.
The only change this guy is really after is whatever is in your pocket to redistribute to the meek, the mild, the duped, the lazy, the criminal, the stupid, the less-motivated etc.
If this guy gets the brass ring, the American public has no idea what they are in for.
Dave in Pa.
I thought Hillary was a PIAPS, if I may use an acronym somebody else invented.
Laura Ingram just played some clips from an Obama speech – the guy is an entertainer, he really works the crowd, but he says nothing of substance.
I saw a video clip the other day that showed a number of Obama supporters being unable to give one example of an Obama accomplishment, not one. But they were rabid supporters. Apparently, it is common for females to faint at his rallies – the emotion is too much for them, and it is all about emotion with Obama.
It’s true Obama and Clinton are ga-ga for universal health care and unsurprisingly they have the support of national healthcare proponents here in Canada.
The problem of course is that once the US goes single payer they won’t be accepting Canadian patients. Currently the US is a massive safety valve for Canadian care. Without it we will suffer medically and financially.
This is the kind of intellectual disconnect that’s all too common in Canada.
This guy kind of makes one pine for the straight-forward decisiveness of Paul Martin…
Dave in PA: Hillary is the female equivalent, a glib, platitudinous Empty Dress…
Yeah, like anyone’s ever seen the Hilldebeast in a dress! :o)
In other words he’s a standard-issue, bone stock, off the shelf DemocRat.
Hey, you vote DemocRat you get what you deserve. Now, if only McCain weren’t a DemocRat too…
Barak H Obama
A Haram Kabob
Notice the guy didn’t say he’s for gun control? He is, he just hasn’t said it yet. Gun control isn’t on The List Of Things We Are For this year.
It the democrats try to implement the same gun control in America that the Libs did here there will be a civil war.
Beware the Rock’N Roll candidate.
Trudeau the Maoist.
Obama the Marxist.
-Regular increases in minimum wage
-Expand head start program
-$150 billion in clean energy funding
-Reduce middle class income taxes
-Universal HealthCare
-Guarantee rights of employees to organize
-Create centralized internet databse containing all public information regarding lobbyists
-Publicizing all regulatory processes (remember Cheney’s Energy Task Force?)
-Creation of Global Energy FOrum for G-8 plus China, Brazil, India, Mexico, South Africa to address Climate Change
You need any more?
FYI – rather than just coming off as lazy, you could go to http://www.barackobama.com
paul2, that’s just the tip of his socialist iceberg
Throbbin, I’d love to see the costing of those and other promises. He’s all over the map, but at least now I have idea of where he stands. His speeches are quite non-specific and full of utopian platitudes. Not that I care who becomes President – no big deal to me. He has as much chance of enacting most of those promises as First Lady Clinton did bringing in universal health care.
Anyway, his promise to bring China, India and others into Kyoto is laughable. Time and time again, the developed world, particularly China, has made it clear the only interest they have in Kyoto treaty is collecting carbon credit revenues. To think he can succeed where everyone else has failed is arrogant and utopian in the extreme.
I will never support any politician who supports Kyoto, and back home here, thinks we can comply and tells us we will get rich in the green economy. This is a scam of epic proportions waiting to happen.
Obama is in for a rough ride. He speaks in riddles most of the time, and his “platform” so far is decidedly left wing. There is nothing essentially wrong with that, except the American people won’t vote for it. He is far too inexperienced to handle the rough and tumble machinations of Presidential race, IMO; much like our Stephane Dion in Canada.
Like I said Throbbin’, off the shelf DemocRat all the way.
What in hell is good about “universal” health care? We have that already. You have to drive to Buffalo to get away from it! You want to fix the biggest problem with health care in the USA you go with tort reform, not single payer madness.
Minimum wage hikes? Genius! Crank up the press, we’re going to print our way out of recession! Because that’s working so well for Mugabe and Chavez.
Right of employees to organize? Dude, they’ve had that for like seventy years.
Come on, you think we were all born yesterday? Give it a rest already.
Whatever anyone thinks of what Obama’s doing, it seems to be working. I think it was Kim Campbell, who learned the hard way, that said “elections are no time to be discussing the issues”.
If you don’t appeal to people’s senses first, nothing you say will amount to much. I’ve been mis-quoted as saying or suggesting that “feelings trump facts”. While I never said it, I will say that, when it comes to elections, for the vast majority, feelings, indeed, do trump facts, whether anyone likes it or not. People vote with their hearts, not their heads.
Obama is talking like a leader. He’s refreshing, inspiring, encouraging, and uplifting. Everyone else looks tired and out-dated by comparison. He’s doing a great job, and I hope he makes a great president.
Fast fading now are the memories of the great depression. Studs Terkel wrote a pretty decent account of the smell of that era. Canadians had a book to read called, “Ten Lost Years”.
Those who cry for “change” scarcely know what change they want. If their grand parents and their great grand parents could have forseen the America of today as far as food and consumer goods were concerned.
They would say “Change, What change? you fools”.
Beware the charismatic personality as it usually has no substance behind it. Who will be pulling the srtings to make this puppet talk. Be very afraid when you get the lemmings following the pied piper. You know what happened to them and I am afraid that this will also happen to America.
The Republicans are going to define Obama.
How can lower middle class taxes and UHC go hand in hand? Tax the corporations? So even MORE jobs can go off shore? Corporations won’t put up with it cause it’s ‘global’ out there in the real world and they’ll go where they find fair treatment.
No one in the US goes without basic health care in any State. You know… public health service and all that. While it may be true that 44 million (or what ever number is being tossed around this week) have no “insurance” that does not mean they cannot get basic health care for the asking.
Parkland Hospital in Dallas, TX treates hundreds of uninsured people every day. Now breast augmentation is not on the menu but basic care is on it.
Speaking of PArkland Hospital…. they really appreciate all those Canadian nurses sent their way because they cannot find full time work in Canada. ASK any of those nurses why. Perhaps it’s the two tier system that attracts them so much.
I can easily imagine Obama intoning this in front of a warbling gospel choir. Takin’ it to the streets and puttin’ one up on The Man:
DETERIORATA
You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here…..
Deteriorata! Deteriorata!
Go placidly
Amid the noise and waste.
And remember what comfort there may be
In owning a piece thereof.
Avoid quiet and passive persons
Unless you are in need of sleep.
Ro-tate your tires.
Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself
And heed well their advice,
Even though they be turkeys.
Know what to kiss…..and when!
Consider that two wrongs never make a right
But that THREE………do.
Wherever possible, put people on hold.
Be comforted that in the face of all aridity and disillusionment
And despite the changing fortunes of time,
There is always a big future in computer main-te-nance.
Chorus
You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.
Remember the Pueblo.
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle and mu-ti-late.
Know yourself.
If you need help, call the FBI.
Exercise caution in your daily affairs,
Especially with those persons closest to you.
That lemon on your left, for instance.
Be assured that a walk through the ocean of most souls
Would scarcely get your feet wet.
Fall not in love therefore;
It will stick to your face.
Gracefully surrender the things of youth:
The birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan
And let not the sands of time
Get in your lunch.
Hire people with hooks.
For a good time call 606-4311;
Ask for “Ken.”
Take heart amid the deepening gloom
That your dog is finally getting enough cheese.
And reflect that whatever misfortune may be your lot
It could only be worse in Milwaukee.
Chorus
You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.
Therefore, make peace with your god
Whatever you conceive him to be—
Hairy thunderer, or cosmic muffin.
With all its hopes, dreams, promises and urban renewal
The world continues to deteriorate.
GIVE UP!
Reprise
You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.
Obama Ben scares me too, eliza. I remember when he won his senator seat and the media was gushing over his ‘potential’. Never, in my worst nightmare, did I think that the flash in the pan would morph into a full scale cult type
‘Oh! Bama, Bama, Lama, Baaama, Bannana bana bo lama, Oh!’ thingie.
Most people here will be too young to remember that catchy little tune that made a person’s feet want to dance….the campaign of this seemingly empty man reminds me of that song…Scary indeed.
“WE ARE THE ONES WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR”
I’ve heard that phrase before. It’s pretty memorable. Google and it turns out it’s by a reknowned American poet June Jordan and is the last line of her “Poem for South African Women” written about 15 years ago. It seems dishonest that he does not acknowledge that and a commentor on this blog would agree:
http://donklephant.com/2008/02/05/obama-speech-liveblog/
Good luck to him. He is going to have his hands full.
I saw an estimate that put Obama’s promises at $775 BILLION dollars, for one term. These are brand new dollars, $775 BILLION, of them. Any American with any income will have it ALL taxed away by Obama. But, only the most naive fools think he is going to implement any of his ‘promises’.
Obama will say whatever he thinks will make him win the election, and some fools will actually believe him. After all, Obama makes them FEEL good, so he must be real, truthful, and, most importantly, HOPEFUL. So they are HOPEFUL that Obama will give them lots of other people’s money.
hey Jimbo,
re: “feelings trump facts” i elections. We can go back to Hitler once again, as he said pretty much that in Mein Kampf. He wasn’t wrong 100% of the time, and this appears from what I’ve seen to be a case where he was right.
all sizzle
no steak
Obama is not an empty suit. He is a very talanted, handsome, clever con artist and snake oil pusher.
Not to worry too much. Right now the real battle, with exceptions of a few side shows, is between the Clintons and Obama. The challenge is to see who can out liberal the other at this stage.
Together they are writing the ads for the Repubs come the general election.
Once the race is down to one Dem vs. one Repub things will become slightly more pragmatic. McCain will pound Obama into the ground. McCain knows how to play rough and dirty in the mud.
The Obama Campaign theme song should be “Candyman” sung by Sammy Davis Jr.
But is Sammy Davis black enough for the Democrats and of the right faith?
Eventually the mice will realize that there is no difference between the black cat and the white cat.
