“I owe you nothing”

Via Newsbusters;

HOLT: It’s a fair point you make; you don’t engage in it. But you were the victim of some rumors on this subject of your viability and questions if you would drop out. How much did that hurt you?
THOMPSON: Well let’s think about that. It did hurt me, and the media lapped it up. It was put out by another campaign; made no sense at all.
HOLT: Which campaign?
THOMPSON: A few days before the election and made no sense at all, and I was coming strong, and the media took it up, and spread the rumor, and probably cost me two or three points in Iowa. So the lesson there is not, you know, politicians being politicians. The lesson there is that the news media really ought to check these stories out and come to me, and ask me, and take my word for it.
HOLT: Senator, fair shot against the news media, but what candidate were you mentioning that put that out there?
THOMPSON: I’m not gonna. I owe you nothing, frankly, in that regard and I’m not going to say anything more about it right now.

  1. No point in “checking for factuality” when your “mistake” is an integral tool in your agenda of pimping for a opposing patron.
I had predicted MSM partisan/patronage influence pandering will be intense and transparent in this campaign and we will have almost a year to study and record this new “outing” of “presstitution”.

  2. “We’ll end it there”
Read : “Senator Thompson, you are not playing fair, so I am taking my ball and going home”
Any more transparent and it would be Windex clear. Well what would you expect from NBC. (I acutally typed CBC first, habits……)

  3. “Back in Iowa, Thompson famously refused to respond to the debate moderator/school marm’s demand for a hand-show on global warming.”
And this is one of Thompson’s most admirable characteristics, refusal to dance to the tune of the MSM or, as in the above quote, unfriendly moderators determined to make him look bad.
I think Thompson recognizes most members of the MSM for the psuedo-intellectual under achievers they really are, and treats them accordingly.

  4. “Back in Iowa, Thompson famously refused to respond to the debate moderator/school marm’s demand for a hand-show on global warming.”
THAT will go down in history as Thompson’s equivalent to Ronald Reagan’s historic:
“I PAID for this microphone” comment in his first run in the 80’s.
    Don’t change a thing Fred.

  5. I read that and immediately thought of my favorite scene in “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”. Sidney Poitier responds to his parents telling him he owes them with the following:
“You listen to me. You say you don’t want to tell me how to live my life. So what do you think you’ve been doing? You tell me what rights I’ve got or haven’t got, and what I owe to you for what you’ve done for me. Let me tell you something. I owe you nothing! If you carried that bag a million miles, you did what you’re supposed to do! Because you brought me into this world. And from that day you owed me everything you could ever do for me like I will owe my son if I ever have another. ”

  6. PMSH dismissed the MSM especially our socialist news agency a long time ago. that is why we have CBCpravda asking questions thru go betweens and constant reports of weather in Nfld or Trona and not much else.

  7. Yeah, appears PM Stephen Harper has disabled the MSM enough to set them off to blabbering about mush.

  8. “Yeah, appears PM Stephen Harper has disabled the MSM enough to set them off to blabbering about mush.”
Well Liz this is the nornal state of affairs for the trudeaupian press corp…natter about mush while the Librano regimes pillage the treasury, sack the west and lay waste to accountable democracy…..shhhh nothin’s happening…don’t worry, be happy, nothing to see here go back to chewing your cud…we’ll lull you to sleep nattering about….. mush.

This was Trudeau’s great (only?) insight, and, knowing that he had their measure, fell over themselves in abject sychophancy.

  10. @Roseberry:
The trouble is, America and Canada differ profoundly regarding the level of “media sycophancy,” or at least they used to. If Fred Thompson manages to get back up through media-bashing, then American culture has really changed.

  11. It’s looking more and more like there will be no clear winner in NH and perhaps even super Tuesday.
Mitt has the $$ to stay on indefinitely and McCain will probably accept fed funds that will paralyze his support level.
While it looked like Fred was going to drop-out to make himself a more attractive VP candidiate, it is increasingly likely that he will stay on in hopes of being alive for a brokered convention.
The scary part is that the likes of Ron Paul in that event could hold the balance of power.

Even Fox News is scared of Thompson, because he’s an equal opportunity media basher. As a result, you have a “100% conservative” candidate who can legitimately claim, in a debate with a Democrat, that he doesn’t take marching orders from Fox News, and he has the lack of media coverage to prove it.
Personally, I hope he stays in as long as possible, because watching him do what Dick Cheney did to Wolf Blitzer over and over again is the only type of entertainment allowed in Canada that isn’t subject to some form of punitive taxation.

    FTW!!!!!!
    LOL, I just had to…

  14. Rosebery, I think you’ve got the cart before the horse. Trudeau knew that the Liberal party controlled the press, and that as a result they had no choice but to be sycophantic to him. As a consequence, he held them in contempt. That contempt didn’t prevent him from relying on them, or motivate them to let him down in any way.
Thompson’s position is quite different. He holds them in contempt because they’re contemptible. Like Trudeau, he has nothing to lose by expressing his contempt, but Trudeau knew the press would support him whatever he did, and Thompson knows they will oppose him.
