(1) Daniel Pipes, Iraq’s Next War:
A good historical perspective on the current tensions with Turkey.
(2) I found these musings on some strains of Christianity by an Australian Mohammedan quite interesting. Many Christians would agree with this assessment:
The Religion of Mammon
To be honest, religion-junkie that I am, I always found Hillsong etc. on the Christian channel quite boring, and I could never put a finger on why. I mean as a teenager (and a non-Christian one at that) I used to watch televangelist shows with some interest, sort of like as a bemused spectator. But Hillsong never does it for me. Now I know why. I’m just not interested in the Amway-cult: lots of muzak, a few feel-good words with no substance behind them and that’s about it. Hillsong sells you religion-lite. Apparently, they don’t even take communion anymore (surely that puts them outside the definition of a mainstream church???)
…I really cannot see what they have in common with Jesus’ actual teachings or mainstream Christianity. It seems to me, to be an entirely new religion that has co-opted some of the terminology and symbols of Christianity, but is based around American materialism – Mammon instead of God. So, it’s very scary when I see our politicians getting in bed with them.
Sorry, the hyperlinks don’t seem to work.

Anything India says about Pakistan, or vice versa, should be taken with a truckload of salt.
The bad blood between these two nations makes the Hatfields and McCoys seems like one big happy family.
From the Star:
“It has been said that taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society. Yesterday the Conservatives made this country a little less civilized by killing the hope of the poorest in our midst for a fairer society in which everyone has a roof over their head and enough to eat.”
Are people really this stupid today? Is Cuba more civilized than Ireland, Estonia and other countries that have slashed taxes and become more prosperous?
I wonder if the editors at the Star insist on earning no more than the median Canadian wage so as to be civilized and fair?
I saw that editorial earlier this morning as well. I wrote them this response:
Your editorial contradicts itself. You initially make the statement that “His mini-budget champions only big tax cuts.”, then go on to state that the mini budget contains not antipoverty strategy.
Here is a clue for you Red Star Castrophiles:
This whole of this mini budget is designed to help reduce poverty in Canada. Our high tax rates and high national debt load are THE cause of poverty in Canada. The biggest beneficiaries of this budget are the lowest income earning taxpayers
Illegal? Hmmm… does this mean that if the current governing party loses this election, that the incoming government will launch an investigation… and hold to account those who currently believe they are above the law and not accountable (because, of course, they exist on the higher moral ground, and therefore, nothing they do is wrong)…
Accountability, coming your way, and soon!
Charles M: regarding the Dervish post, this is nothing new it’s being going on for millenia, literally. Besides, until these people begin blowing up buses, pizza parlors, flying planes into buildings, beheading people, setting up rockets on the borders of democratic countries, stoning women and forcing wimpy western dhimmi, infidel PC beaurocrats to bow to them, what’s really the problem?
The Star piece had so many holes in it it’s not worth even going there but this one

is interesting. Connie Harrison says,”I don’t want to use this word, but I think there was some discrimination involved,”
Newspapers think they’re being young and edgy or something when they allow juveniles from the college papers to write their editorials. Nope, they just lose the rational adult readership.
Doc Brown,
I don’t think what is going on in Pakistan has anything much to do with India. It is Pakistan at war with itself over whether or not to become like Iran under fanatical religious whack jobs or continue trying to be a free democratic state. LIKE INDIA.
re: Things are not going well in Pakistan.
DocBrown, I also suspect there’s an element of wishful thinking in reporting the “Pak” army’s difficulties. Nonetheless, even Britain had trouble operating in the frontier areas — the offensives in Swat and Hunza are notorious episodes in Imperial history, although Chitral later showed what a “modern” army could accomplish in harsh terrain.
So according to the Star, Canada has “huge social problems”. Excuse me, but didn’t True Dough and his ilk not have roughly 40 years to “fix” these? Or is the unwritten paragraph that True Dough and his ilk were responsible for these problems?
Really now. Let’s do more of what we did before, because we got such excellent results.
What a convincing editorial!
“…this is nothing new…”
To what are you referring, Doug? Mohammedans taking a balanced, rational view of Christianity rather than preaching jihad? A view many Christians, agnostics or atheists would agree with? I was not implying that the criticism was offensive, or that the blogger is anti-Christian.
Should tell you something about the Pakistani army. They are getting whipped by the exact same Talibani weenies the Allied Force is beating.
Bottom line, the Taliban runs back to Pakistan to rest!

Dion’s credibility hangs by a thread
[…]
In his essay for the Star, Dion also said he wants to build “the richest, fairest and greenest country in the world.”
He cannot do that, though, by continually propping up the Harper Conservatives. And he cannot do it if he won’t tell Canadians what his bottom line is before his party will defeat the government. Is there one issue that will force him to act? Hasn’t Harper done enough already in his bid to reverse or discredit the progressive social policies introduced by previous Liberal governments?
These are questions Dion needs to answer immediately if he hopes to maintain any credibility with the voters. …-

The Toronto Star is full of BS and reflects the typical way of thinking that’s gotten Toronto and Ontario into the mess they’re in right now.
Yesterday, it was revealed that communism is the result of severe psychological problems (and the same goes for left-wing thinking in general and, of course, the Toronto Star).
And Dion, who loves Marxism above anything else, should see his shrink too and fast.

A rumour is spreading in the gun community, that a freedom of information request regarding the compliance to magazine capacity limitations under the Bill C68 revealed, that since coming into force in 1998 the government did not bother to collect a bit of statistics on effectiveness and level of compliance.
The Firearms Center now under RCMP did not have any numbers pertaining to the magazine capacity of the firearms used in crime, and whether there were any signs that magazines were ever properly blocked.
Great stuff from IPCC scientist John R. Christy on AGW alarmism in today’s Wall Street Journal:
—————————-
Mother Nature simply operates at a level of complexity that is, at this point, beyond the mastery of mere mortals (such as scientists) and the tools available to us. As my high-school physics teacher admonished us in those we-shall-conquer-the-world-with-a-slide-rule days, “Begin all of your scientific pronouncements with ‘At our present level of ignorance, we think we know . . .'”
I haven’t seen that type of climate humility lately. Rather I see jump-to-conclusions advocates and, unfortunately, some scientists who see in every weather anomaly the specter of a global-warming apocalypse. Explaining each successive phenomenon as a result of human action gives them comfort and an easy answer.

Perplexing poll shows Harper stalled
Tories failing to turn satisfaction into voter decision

OTTAWA -Almost unnoticed amid the hoopla of Jim Flaherty’s Halloween bonanza, a new opinion poll landed that has given Liberals hope and left Conservatives rattled.
The poll by Harris/Decima suggests the Conservatives’ lead over the Liberals is down to just four percentage points — almost within the margin of error.
Decima put the Conservatives at 33%, compared with 29% for the Liberals, despite weeks of media coverage in which Grit leader Stephane Dion has been portrayed as the Inspector Clouseau of Canadian politics.
———————–
It’s pretty clear why the Liberals are so low in the polls, but why do the Conservatives and Harper continue to have zero traction? Almost two years and at 33% they are still below where they were on election night despite a great economy, low unemployment, weak/no opposition, pliant press corps that regurgitates Conservative press releases, controlling the agenda in Ottawa, spending more than any government in the history of Canada.
Puzzling or not so puzzling at all?
Serious questions:
1. how do you define poverty?
2. does anyone here know anyone who is living in poverty (not as a lifestyle choice)?

Conservative MP Joy Smith will introduce a private member’s bill that targets human trafficking, the lucrative organized-crime racket that typically lures boys, girls and women from small towns and turns them into sex slaves.
“Everyone thinks this crime was stopped in the 1800s, but it has taken on a new form and targets children,” said Mrs. Smith (Kildonan-St. Paul). “We’re taking a closer look at halting the rights of pedophiles and making sure the rights of ordinary citizens are protected.” […]
To combat trafficking from the demand side, Mrs. Smith is also preparing a bill that would further monitor the movement of convicted pedophiles in Canada. …-

What do the Liberals stand for anyways? Aside from coming up with some good slogans to get back POWER!!!!
Last week Dion said that Scott Brison was writing the new Liberal platform. Here are a few quotes from today:
“Dion understands what makes good policy. But not so much about what makes good politics,” said one prominent Liberal.
On the policy side, the Liberals’ election platform is now undergoing a final edit from Dion and former leadership rival Bob Rae.
Those who have seen the latest version are raving that it contains innovative ideas about fighting poverty and climate change, and building a stronger economy.
One of Dion’s frequent critics in caucus said the platform is destined to steal votes from the NDP on the left, while sticking to a conservative projection of 2.5-per cent annual economic growth.
Ken Dryden stood up at a caucus meeting Wednesday after seeing the document to express his delight.
Okay now, so we have “fighting poverty” and Ken Dryden applauding – tells me there is state run day cares (provincial jurisdiction once again) going to be shoved down our throats with Federal boondoggles.
Climate change – hmmmmm- that means bashing the big bad oil and gas industries and sending billions to china for that dog Kyoto and ignoring provincial jurisdiction and climate change programs once again.
In my opinion any “poverty pimping program” MUST incorporate mental illness and addictions programs, parenting training and tougher stay in school restrictions by the provinces.
What would socialists like Rae and Dion come up with?
Any guesses?

You can be sure someone in the legacy media will take this tack: “The death toll from AGW continues to rise.”
Sydney man charged with ‘hose rage’ murder
Australia’s long-running drought claimed a bizarre fatality when a 66-year-old man was bashed to death while watering his lawn, police said.
Ken Proctor, a retired truck driver, was hosing his grass in the southern Sydney suburb of Sylvania at 5.30pm yesterday when he got into a row with Todd Munter, 36, over the city’s water restrictions.
Police said today that Mr Proctor turned his hose on Mr Munter after which the younger man punched and pushed him to the ground before kicking him. Mr Proctor was taken to hospital but died soon after of a heart attack.
…Most cities have banned garden sprinklers and made it illegal to hose down cars and pavements…But in fact Mr Proctor was complying with the rules in Sydney, which allow watering with hand-held hoses before 10am and after 4pm on Sundays and Wednesdays.
CM – Clearly Australia needs a garden Hose Registry then!
Lorraine – Clearly you are a woman I could love.
What else would the Liberals like to do To Us?
My sense is that they would like nothing better than to have most Canadians impoverished and dependent.
Worked so well for the East Coast and on Reservations! Soon Ontario Eh?
In news from the land formerly know as Great Britain:
More Dhimi-ism
High taxes and the national debt load have little, if anything to do with individuals living in poverty in our country.
Our high poverty (and especially troubling Aboriginal poverty rate (individuals who do not even PAY one of our taxes) are due to inaffordable housing, insufficent minimum wage and social assistance rates (which I realize are a provincial jurisdiction)
This tax cut and tax break are going to do little to combat poverty. Who do you think is going ot benefit most from this gst cut? the guy who buys his couch from the Salvation Army or the guy who buys a yacht? Tax cuts and tax credits mean very little for those without money.
We’ve got record surplusses, yet there is nothing in the proposed budget which will substancially help those with the greatest need.
In fact, counties that have higher tax regimes happen to have stronger performances. A study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives found that countries with higher taxes, such as Finnland, Sweden, Norway (ect) have significantly lower rates of poverty across almost all social groups. Not only that, income is distributed significantly more equally. (Brooks, Hwong (2006) The Social Benefits and Economic Costs of Taxation. Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives)

I’m inclined to agree with the commentors to the post who insist that it must involve a Democrat, because the Los Angeles Times would have published it immediately had it involved a Republican. I don’t dismiss the argument that it would be wiser for a leftie paper to hold it until after the Republicans nominate somebody, but I do believe that the lefties aren’t usually that disciplined.
Karli- the socialism/communism principals of high taxes and free food for all even if they don’t help themselves those who DO give give give that you would appear to espouse lacks a very important element:
In Canada you are equal to your own ambitions. There are rewards for making the right choices; there are rewards for following the rules and working harder or smarter, taking advantage of all this country offers us all – equal opportunity.
We also are a genourous and compassionalte country – for those who CANNOT help themselves we gladly give help to.
BUT, for those who WON”T help themselves and who made the wrong choices do we ALL then pay for their laziness, addictions, poor choices, antisocial or criminal behaviours because their PERSONAL CHOICES put them in some little box called “the poor”?
Try that in your own community. Go take half your paycheck and hand it to the drug dealers and addicts hanging out at your kid’s schools; take some more to give to the welfare MOm as she leaves the casino or bingo hall and then take the rest to dole out to the midweek drunks at the nearest saloon.
That’s what socialists think “helping the poor” should be.
Dear Partisan Ted: regarding the poll results you were harping about, I posit that the polls are not accurate in the least. Ipsos-Reid on October 20th claimed 40% for the Conservatives and 27% for the Liberals. Either the country is filled with outrageously fickle people who keep jumping back and forth in their political choices on a daily basis (highly unlikely) or the polls are not nearly as accurate as they claim (plus or minus 2 points 19 times out of 20 or whatever they claim).
Your pathetic attempt at smear just reinforces your image as just another snake in a $1000 suit.
Ted,
So why didn’t you post the last poll which had the Conservatives at 40%?
Even Duffy commented that the poll you’re referring to is confusing, if not meaningless, when others have the Conservatives at 39 – 40%.
How about the just released poll in Quebec that has the Conservatives tied with the Bloc at 31%, with Dion’s Liberals at 16%?
Oh, pardon me, I forgot, you’re not rational or balanced, you’re a leftist buffoon.
“It has been said that taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society. Yesterday the Conservatives made this country a little less civilized by killing the hope of the poorest in our midst for a fairer society in which everyone has a roof over their head and enough to eat.”
“Are people really this stupid today?”
Yup Chip, some are. They’re called scum sucking parasites, or leftists.
One letter writer to the star sez: “…the only approach these two neo-conservative ideologues can come up with is to cut taxes, benefiting mainly the top 10 percent of earners.”
To which I’d say, you’re right worthless moonbat, it’s the top 10% that pay 90% of taxes. Further, lower tax rates always increase government revenue by stimulating the economy, attracting business – resulting in more employment and an increase of tax dollars to government. Then they’ve got more dough to stick into rational social programs.
But then, these idiots go along with Layton and his jonesing to tax corporations big time. Never considering the result of mass unemployment and diminishing tax to government as the corporations rightfully decide to look elsewhere.
The war against stupid, continues.

Grits blast Tory reversal on death-penalty policy
OTTAWA [CTV] — The Conservative government’s announcement that it will no longer stand up for [murderous] Canadians who face the death penalty in the United States is drawing fire from the opposition.
The Tories have announced a change in Canada’s foreign policy when it comes to Canadians on death row.
Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day has said his government will not plead for the life of Alberta-born Ronald Allen Smith, who faces lethal injection in Montana for the 1982 murder of two men.
The government also announced that it will not attempt to save other Canadians who were given the death penalty following a fair trial in democratic countries like the U.S.
Perfected: The Ann Coulter Song
The Canadian Ctr for Policy Alternatives is highly suspect as a research group considering their strong ties to the NDP. And as for those wonderful high tax regimes in Scandinavia, check your data.
Finland is ranked 16th in the world in terms of economic freedom. Their highest income tax rate is 32.5% and the top corporate rate is 26%.
Sweden’s disposable income is worse than Mississipi’s. Almost half of the market cap on the Swedish stock exchange is controlled by one family: the Wallenbergs.
As for Norway, it has 4 million people and is awash in oil so hardly an ideal barometer. Yet the cost of living is 30% higher than in the US.
Chip,
You’re bang on with that one.
The “Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives” is a euphemism for NDP HQ.

NEW YORK Tom Curley, president and CEO of The Associated Press, who was honored at the annual Knight-Bagehot Dinner in New York tonight, said in his keynote address, “We — the news industry — have come to that fork in the road. We must take bold, decisive steps to secure the audiences and funding to support journalism’s essential role in both our economy and democracy, or find ourselves on an ugly path to obscurity….
“The portals are running off with our best stuff, and we’re afraid or unable to make or enforce deals that drive fair value. Revenue lines in a good month are flat. In other months, they inspire the merchants of debt to imagine how they might take us over and show us how much smarter they are….
