Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

…I don’t care what the facts say, my mind is made up…
No,no,no…..this is just all wrong! The evil Canucks have killed all the seals,so the polar bears must be starving. Whoever took this census must have mistook great danes for bears! After all, they can’t swim (the bears) and are all drowning!

Pete the Polar Bear boasts: I never met a man I didn’t like.
Why didn’t he or she post where that chart came from?
I hope this means the polar bear hunt is back.
Are you a polar bear reality DENIER?

She thought before she left that she would hit open water, not so far. Nevertheless a very special person.
The Enviro-wackos, Al Gore, Suzuki and especially the World Wildlife Fund who are raising hundredsof millions to “Save the Polar Bear” will never let the facts get in the way of a good con job!
Excerpt from one of about 100 sources I found debunking the GW polar bear scare:
Indeed, since the 1970s — all while the world was “warming” – polar bear numbers increased dramatically from around 5,000 to as many as 25,000 today (higher than at anytime in the 20th century).
And historically, polar bears have thrived in temperatures even warmer than at present — during the medieval warm period 1000 years ago and during the Holocene Climate Optimum between 5,000 and 9,000 years ago.
Polar bears have thrived during warmer climates because they are omnivores just like their cousin’s the Brown and Black bears.
Though Polar Bears eat seals more than any other food source at present, research shows that they have a varied diet when other foods are available including, fish, kelp, caribou, ducks, sea birds, the occasional beluga whale and musk ox and scavenged whale and walrus carcasses.
In addition, Dr. Mitchell Taylor, a biologist with Nunavut Territorial government in Canada, pointed out in testimony to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, that modest warming may be beneficial to bears since it creates better habitat for seals and would dramatically increase blueberry production which bears gorge themselves on when available.
Alaska’s polar bear population is stable, and Taylor’s research shows that the Canadian polar bear population has increased 25 percent from 12,000 to 15,000 during the past decade with 11 of Canada’s 13 polar bear populations stable or increasing in number.
Where polar bear weight and numbers are declining, Taylor thinks too many bears competing for food, rather than arctic warming, is the cause.
That’s right, the problem confronting polar bears may overpopulation not extinction!
Bear with me while I figure out what is going on here.

This is true for ALL life forms in nature. Increase your population to the point where you outstrip your food supply, and, golly gee, guess what? You start to starve off. Maybe this is what the fat pig Goracle is afraid of. He’ll have nothing to eat if we don’t enforce Kyoto and kill off a few million 2rd world peoples!
opppssss…..3rd world…can’t read to well from lack of food..:)
Here is just one example of the World Wildlife Fund Save the Polar Bear scam targeted at CHILDREN.
Shameless isn’t it?
Children to learn how to help save polar bears
Monday, 7 May 2007,
Press Release: World Wildlife Fund
WWF and Canon Europe launched today a “Save the Polar Bear” website as an educational tool to teach children about the environmental impacts of climate change.
The site a microsite hosted on the enhanced WWF-Canon Polar Bear Tracker (www.panda.org/polarbears) will have a variety of activities suitable for children aged from seven to eleven.
In fun and engaging ways, and with the aid of two animated polar bear cubs named Auro and Borea, children will learn about threats to polar bears’ habitat, about the issues and challenges of climate change, their own impact on the environment, and how they can each make a difference.
Thanks to Canon’s support, WWF is now able to increase its support for polar bear research and to gain valuable information on how changes in sea ice affect this charismatic species.
Due to global warming, the sea ice on which polar bears live melts earlier and earlier every year, leaving them with a smaller area in which to find food.
Though pollution and hunting are other threats to polar bears, climate change is the biggest of them all.
Unless humanity takes radical action to reduce its emissions of global warming gases such as carbon dioxide, we are unlikely to be able to save the polar bear.
As some who majored in biology, it irritates the hell out of me when the media or left-wingers talk about science as if it’s beyond a Conservative’s understanding.
It’s insulting – these people (whom, I might add, don’t know the FIRST THING about science) presume to lecture me on Biology?
A couple of weeks ago even the cbc reported the polar bear overpopulation ‘problem” [yes! it seems amazing they could get this straight but they did!]
check this:

It seems that the Inuit elders know better than the dumb territorial government.
Polar Bear Health 101
Global Warming = Less ice
Less ice = more water
More water means Polar Bears must now swim to their favourite destination. Swimming is much more excercise than walking. The Polar Bears become more healthy as a result of the excercise and a healthy diet rich in anti-oxidants from fish as opposed to those trans-fatty seals.
A healthy Polar Bear is a horny Polar Bear. Therefore, the population increases.
After debunking the last two links from “captaincapitalism” I don’t think I’ll even bother visiting the link this time. Do you just link to him to heap embarrassment on him Kate?
Polar bear populations aren’t stable… but that means everything is in balance and doing fine. Problem solved.
A recent study found that…???
Ok then, what is the name of this recent study? It would be nice if they quoted their source.
I shouldn’t have to point this out but I have to consider who I’m talking to.
We have to remember that Hudson’s Bay is much shallower than other arctic waters and is influenced by the climatic effects of being surrounded by the continental landmass, the bay is therefore far more susceptible to any changes in climate. The disappearance of the ice around Hudson Bay affects the Polar Bear population before other bear populations in the Arctic. This doesn’t mean these other populations are immune to man made global warming as their environments will eventually be effected with the disappearance of their Artic icepack, threatening the survival of all polar bears.
Could this be the source of the info?

This article also doesn’t talk enough about bear genitals.
I once lived in Churchill on the Dudson’s Bay. The polar bears came through there on a migration route every year around Halloween.
They did not travel by “ice pack” – they walked on the Canadian Shield; lived at times in the rocky caves of the sheild and fished in the OPEN waters of Hudson’s Bay.
In those days the polar bays hunted the beluga whales in the baby alongside the inuit.
Urgh- lots of typos in the previous post. Sorry-my cat is on my lap.
The polar bear population is increasing? Abundant prey? What the hell are they eating? Environmental activists?
Fer christ’s sake you seal huggers, quit feeding the bears!
Or is this the result of inbreeding as packs of polar bears live and propogate on tiny ice flows?
Now that’s just what we need…a burgeoning population of retarded polar bears. All this when we had the huge fury buggers on the run.
*sigh*

This isn’t the first time the Kyoto polar bear population fraud has been mentioned here.

ya just can’t fool mother nature and if by “saving” the seals you increase food for polar bears (good) while decreasing the fish stock the seals devour (bad) somethings gotta give
Feed the enviromentalists wackos to the polar bears. SAVE A PENGUIN EAT A LEOPARD SEAL. SQUAWK SQUAWK
Has anyone had a polar bear roast? Are they tasty?
This is a great party conversation piece…
Well, it breaks the ice, anyway…
🙂
“As some who majored in biology, it irritates the hell out of me when the media or left-wingers talk about science as if it’s beyond a Conservative’s understanding.”
The AGW debate doesn’t break down strictly upon left/right lines. Plenty of righties have bought into it, and plenty of lefties haven’t. You can’t get much further left than Alexander Cockburn, and he’s an AGW denier.
Science fantasy seems to be in vogue with all the “feelers” these days. Of course left wing crusades always play to tragedy.
White bears come and go dependent on prey numbers and infant mortality (most cubs are killed by male bears not starvation). The bear is an omnivore and White bears will eat anything from whale carrion to fish to birds to seals…pretty much anything that swims, crawls, flies or crows is on the menue…it’s why this bear species is so successful…it’s diet is nit limited.
Last time I was goose hunting in the Churchill region our Cree guide said the geese were down that year because the bears had been feeding on the young because small fish stocks were down. When I was there I was seeing groups of 2 to 5 bears in hunting/family ggroups whic indicated the good times were rolling even with a mysterious prey fish decline.
I don’t think you can find a more adaptable species.
I think the scammers have appropriated the so-called “polar bear” as a wildlife welfare species because of it’s remoteness of terrirory….most people will never see a white bear outside the zoo or a Disney-esque film, so it seems wild and exotic and rare to urbanites south of 49… like the African elephant it garners emotion and romantic feelings that open wallets and pocket books to the scammers.
Lloyds of London has a few things to say about your denials:
http://www.reuters.com/article/environmentNews/idUSN0737930020070507?feedType=RSS&rpc=22
Lloyds, jumping on the bandwagon to sell you even more insurance you will never make a claim against.
Yes, leftdog the climate is changing, in fact, warming (BTW you do know this means Lloyd’s premium income goes up). We also know that continued use of carbon fuels in worldwide modernization will create ecological disaster, so alternate fuels must be developed soon.
Whether or not humans have caused warming is now immaterial. All forms of carbon pollution must be phased out. Kyoto, international carbon credits and increased taxation will not get us off carbon fuels.
Developing the new technologies, here in the modernized world, so we and the developing world can use clean energy, is a better solution. I would rather develop the technology here and give it away than provide credits to Russia or China, hoping they will develop clean energy technology.
The new environmental movement has to drop its “let’s put it to the man” mentality and obsession with CO2, rather than their previous holistic approach.
We need to ditch the doomsayers, who multiply sea level rises just for the fun of it, and those who want an endless debate of AGW theory, while understanding this is a long-term venture, requiring the cooperative efforts of our best minds. That is how we will save our planet.
Many people asked about a source for the figure. To these people, I have two words : Google images.
Here is a page from the United Nations Environment Programme showing a nearly identical graph with, in addition, details about the areas where populations are decreasing or increasing.
“while understanding this is a long-term venture”
It’s a long term venture, which would be helped along by setting short term attainable targets and meeting them. We’re into the second Summer of Conservative rule now, and there’s still no Made In Canada solution passed through the House let alone acted upon.
More sources for the image: here is the original, used in an article by AP back in January. AP credits the group IUCN for the figure but I could not find it in their web site.
Even if humankind runs out of fuel for their vehicles, there still be humankind. We are even more adaptive creatures than polar bears. Somehow we managed to survive and develop ourselves using horse powered carts and wagons. If we’ll have to resort to that again, there will be no catastrophe. There is no need to get so worked up just because someone claims, that the future generations will be in trouble – I frankly don’t give a rat ass about the troubles of future generations – I won’t be around to feel sorry or happy. I just know for sure that we as humankind managed to survive bubonic plague, Mongol hordes and sinking of Atlantis and still arrived at today’s society of blogs, laprascopic surgeries and hybrid cars. Take away those and there still will be no tragedy, just inconvenience. It’s as if someone promised that you will live 150 years and never get sick and you found that it was false! No, you were born into this world on the ‘as is’ basis without your consent – deal with it.
Aaron, your lack of empathy for other humans is appalling.
“Somehow we managed to survive and develop ourselves using horse powered carts and wagons. If we’ll have to resort to that again, there will be no catastrophe.”
You could note that society has progressed beyond animal powered carts, and so our society relies upon the speed of transportation to feed us and provide medical attention. Undoubtedly if there was a gasoline shortage next month and people couldn’t fill their cars, more than just jobs would be lost. The period of adjustment would include wars, and riots, and people WILL die. You admit as much, even though you skirt that issue like a coward with your bravado about not really caring about those lives.
And although “we” survived the black death, about 1/3 of Europe didn’t. Humanity is more than an organism, we’re “adaptive creatures” with thoughts and feelings.
How about a little more “thought” and a little less “feelings” when discussing science, then!
A funny picture showing two penguins and a polar bear one of the birds stands on top of the bear with cymbals ready to bang them together the other stands near by with suit cases MUMBLE. HEY GLORIA WATCH ME MAKE THIS POLAR BEAR JUMP TO THE MOON GLORIA.WOW THE FIRST PENGUINS TO LAND A POLAR BEAR ON THE MOON GO FOR IT
….ummmm?
Wow, something I actually agree with Kate on.
The Polar Bears are not starving or dieing off.
And yes, the Inuit elders up there know ALOT more than the territorial government (which is pretty dumb).
Ask any Inuk whats happening to the Polar Bears, and they’ll tell you there are too many, and not only are they endangering themselves through overpopulation (on a limited food supply), but they are endengering Inuit hunters and campers as well, as they compete for food and have to move into areas that were known to be Polar-Bear free for centuries.
