This latest [in the carbon cap-and-trade] comes on top of a) plants being closed in Valencia and Zaragoza for lack of a Kyoto permit and b) Acerinox’s CEO announcing his (steel manufacutring) investment would all go outside Europe now (the US — so far, 175 jobs in Carroll County, KY — and South Africa)..
Ceramics are an industry that Spain seeks to protect from Brussels like Germany (ideally) would its chemicals — they tried, e.g., in the REACh debate — and they require a bit of energy to make their products. Now, in Galicia, a manufacturer announced that last year it earned more from selling credits than ceramics (reminding me of an email I once got in which a French pharma company announced that selling credits was where its future lies, not pharmaceuticals).
Their statement was couched in terms of thanking the government for generously (that is, “over-“) allocating ETS credits to them (for free, as industry lobbyists already demand of Congress), and noted that with the credit price having skyrocketed (before collapsing) they were able to reap a windfall by selling what the government had given them. They lamented that the price collapse, however, indicated this wasn’t, er, sustainable.
Buried in this however was the phrase that, taking that price spike into account, they had decided to “equalibriate” their operations so as to maximize profits with an ideal mix of selling allocations and using them by, well, using electricity to make stuff…which is to say they also went into the business of making nothing, dedicating more of their operations to the task, which is far less labor intensive. That is, they found it more profitable to partially shut down, to idle workers.
Emphasis mine. That said, it’s been proven possible to reduce C02 emissions on a national scale. Indeed, the US has accomplished it twice the recent past;
In modern times, according to the Department of Energy, CO2 emissions have dropped only twice _ during the recessions of 1981-82 and 1990-91. The 1981-82 recession, the deepest since the Great Depression, reduced CO2 emissions by 8 percent.
Read the whole thing and note the date.
Breaking… The world’s leading* geneticist on economics responds: “stop listening to the goddamn economists,”
“Because if you don’t do what I say, the economies of the world will suffer a collapse larger than the great depression and both world wars combined and the polar bears will drown in boiling seas, Vancouver will be under 20 feet of water and all your grandchildren will die.”.
“And besides, Baird is just scaremongering.”

Excuse me missed a ‘cannot’ text shoud read “in areas of the world that people cannot sustain themselves in.”
Onw way that Kyoto will improve air quality in Canada is by greatly reducing the number of people driving to work.
Well, I for one am going to do something for Earth Day. I plan on hosing down a hippie. Then I’m gonna make him get a haircut. Nothing better than a nappy-headed Hippie for Earth Day.
Earth Day was originally about cleaning up pollution, a worthy cause…..now it is about this mania regarding CO2
pundit
it has nothing to do with it- dork.
the whole place was covered in water 50 years ago and for thousands of years before that, and for 25000 of the past 50000 years it was covered in ice.
Jeff said earlier…..
“I would respect the enviromentals sooo much more if the focus was on pollution, clean water and presevation/replanting of both rain forest and boreal forests.
This, on a world wide scale, is a far more pressing environmental concern, in my opinion.”
I agree. We can also add overfishing of the oceans to the list.
There are many worthy issues being ignored for the anti-science cult of man-made global warming.
Just trust us,says steffette, lizzie, and davey boy,it is the only way to save the planet.A vote for us is a vote for the future.Ka-ching.

-Hmm… that sounds familiar. Goes with the violin music I’m imagining…
“We are progressive. Never mind what that means; it’s something good. Trust us. Never mind that you’ve found that you can’t. This time, just trust us. Harper’s the boogeyman. Tories are banshees. Liberals are flawless and can do no wrong.”
Fugeddaboutit. We trusted these guys too many times already, and each time they betrayed our trust.
Pundit,
Have you ever been to the area in question? This is nothing new, except that the water is not receding at a “normal” pace due to to higher than “normal” snow pack, higher than “normal” ground water levels, and a rapid thaw.
Better to be silent and be thought a fool, rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt.
I am celebrating earth day by cutting my grass with an electric mower. Also cooking a roast in a slow cooker. Later I will be golfing 18 holes and driving around in my electric golf cart.
I have some carbon credits to sell; was wondering about e-bay.
When you start looking at the parallels to the ramp down of 1929, especially about market strength built on empty paper, one had better be advised to keep your investments liquid and tangible. There’ll be a lot more people looking for a lot fewer jobs, and fewer still able to live off the land, and you know the EI benefits won’t be there…
My “earth day” celebrations started by reiterating in public ( thanks to SDA) that :
1) Kyoto is a self destructive economic policy not a environment policy
2) Bought charcoal for the Bar-BQ this evening
3) Raked the yards and burned the leaves and deadfall
4) put some fresh methane-producing sheep poop on the garden beds and worked it in as the crops are 2 weeks behind due to ground frost hanging on too long this year.
5) Drove the 1/2 ton to the store and bought “carbonated” beverages (to serve with the Bar-BQ beef)
6) Enjoyed the first sunshine and shirt-sleve warmth we have had here in 5 months.
7) Relaxed under my slow-to-bloom peach tree where both I and the tree looked forward to the extra degree of warmth promised by the global warming apostles when it arrives in the next decade. 😉
No question … Kyoto will be the answer to Canada’s growing labor shortage.
Also the answer to the promoters of world government who want the West’s money evenly distributed around the world so that everyone on the planet has about twenty dollars and a gray blanket.
Of course they themselves .. the Gores, Suzukis, Stongs, Demarais, Cretiens etc. along with the the rest of the UN crowd will keep their whisper jets and heavily secured air conditioned homes.
And enjoy that great day there WL M Redux. I will do something similar.
There is much talk out there that we have to control population, and as humans expel c02 every time they breath, I think stopping immigration to reduce co2 is a good start. Then, lets ban all tourists, they expel that dreaded pollutant, and use energy in all their activities. Think of the water saved by hotels not having all that laundry to do. Also all the flushes not flushed. The energy not used by hotels to cook and clean, tremendous. Many litres of gas would be saved by workers not having a job to go to. Some idiot in Ont is talking about using clotheslines instead of dryers. Think of the trees needed to make those clothespins. Today DS has a column in the Leth Herald, complaining about the fishing trawlers and the fact when a boat goes over the water it is disturbed, mud is racked up and takes ages to settle. My contribution to earth day, washing 6 loads of laundry and using the dryer, leaving the lights on in the laundry room, using the computer for my accounting backlog and tax returns for clients. Constant pot of coffee on, dishwasher going and 3 tvs going.
Let us know how gore makes out tomorrow.
Saw dion imitating Judge Judy today on QP. Have not seen the ad anywhere but on newman/qp. Is it running anywhere. Those conferences are planned years in advance. Who set the date for the one in Montreal and when was it done.
How big a footprint did dion leave phoneing, faxing, e-mailing people in 182 countries to come to montreal. How much energy was used by all the planes to get them here. What did it cost the city to protect all those dictators. Did he buy offset credits to pay for it. We deniers need to know.
new Survey over at CTV: would you be willing to pay a carbon tax 70 oercemt,
Yeah, EarthDay plans = Non-polluting everyday plans, including a big fish and chips with creampuff dessert at restaurant later.
Sundays are so demanding. = TG
well, I started off with a breakfast of kippers. Then off to the dive site, 100km yon, in ye olde trusty Jeep 4 x 4.
Nice dive, although I certainly don’t want CO2 buildup in that situation. Then back home. Fire up the Barbie for a T-bone. Do much the same as WL REdux in the garden.
The only Earth I thought about was that in my vege4table garden, and how to improve itas quality and the appropriate spray to rejuvinate the lawn.
Oh, also came up with the slogan “Save the planet – Collect the set!”
O/T Did Monsieur Dijon vote today?
But, wait, David Suzuki assures us Canadians willing to pay carbon tax. After all he has checked with all his moonbat friends.
On other hand, CTV poll disagrees:
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/HTMLTemplate
Oh yes, moonbats, this is an UNSCIENTIFIC poll. But, so is Suzuki’s “argument.”
Funny how Dionsky and his fellow moonbats are so sure Canadians don’t like Harper and want to save earth just like him; but, of course, we don’t want an election, which will decide issue, over this. And anything else for that matter.
I guess we’ll have to wait for Dionsky’s ninth position on Kyoto and the environment. Let’s not forget either his “Marshall plan for Afghanistan.”
Maybe he and Layton should go to Afghanistan instead of France (2 weeks late), and actually talk to the troops, so as to be sure they are supporting them.
Please, please, let’s have election as soon as possible. I’m sick of Dionsky, Mayday, Taliban Jack and Dr Fruitfly telling us what Canadians think. I for one am willing to take a chance and find out for sure. Why aren’t they?
More sightings of Moonbat-Alien reported.
Fruit-fly moonbat on the loose. Dangerous enviro fanatic intent on despoiling your wallets, your youth, your country. Alias: Drosophila Gaiaus Moonbattus. Last seen/heard in CTV’s Executive dining room despoiling escargots, snails, and earthworms.
Suzuki: Take your carbon tax and shove it where the fruit flies can’t reach it.

Canadians Ready For A Carbon Tax: David Suzuki
(ctv via national newswatch)
The thing with the whole “Carbon Market” is that it’s total hypocrasy and the reason why all these “Chicken Little” environmentalist are full of crap. How do you justify a Carbon Market when it’s sole purpose is to allow industries or countries to continue increasing their emissions at a cost. If the sky is falling then the only answer is reduced emissions and technology leading to that. No other cost is acceptable, nor should it be.
The truth is that the Goracles propaganda is really just an overblown advertisment for his own carbon trading business …. and no sees this!!!
These guys have brainwashed a whole generation of kids and young adults … That’s scary!!!
Surely Suzuki meant to say Gaia-damned economists. Why is Baird wasting his time to talk to that egomaniac?
I was thinking of starting a weight-loss clinic where the clientele could purchase food credits, but Algore looks as if somebody beat me to the punch. But just imagine it: you could have your cake and eat it.
I will mark Ulyanov Day by not excercising and downing Beano. http://ajpgi.physiology.org/cgi/content/abstract/272/5/G1028
Interesting blurb over at Bourque(in Heard at Hy’s section) Mentions possible merger between Greenies/Libs,Suzuki and May are playing Dion like a fiddle, and he’s blissfully unaware.Theory is,that Dion will get all green party support, increased numbers for Libs.will get the non-impressed Dion detractors on side. This would cut off Iggy/Rae at the knees!Interesting..but how many Greens/Libs would support this.Lizzie would get Deputy Party leader.Hmm,wonder what reward Suzuki would get?
Speaking of reducing emissions through technology.

Hey Wimpy- Fer God sake kippers???
Jesus, whenever my mother would cook those for my Dad, my brother and I would literally have to leave the house! I have never smelled anything so bad in my life until I came across a cadaver that had been roasting in the sun for several months. Kippers and dead bodies have something in common, believe me.
On the other hand, T-Bones are sweet.
Check out the poll on CTV today – would you be willing to pay a carbon tax ????
The whole Carbon Credit nonsense is another Dutch tulip bulb frenzy/South Sea Bubble waiting to happen. I highly recommend “Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds” — written in the 1840s; nothing has changed.
Purple Avenger, you must have been at Suzkuki’s home for dinner!
Suzuki won’t be happy tonite!According to G&M,this Earth Day,that shows canadians #1 issue is environment..turnout for the BIG parades,sit-in’s whatever..in Quebec, few thousand turned up..to hear Duceppe say ‘Canada is getting rich off oil..and Quebec pays’..HUH???
In Ottawa-approx.300 show up to the Hill..mostly ‘youth’..meaning moonbats.
In center of universe(TO)complete with Jack and Olivia on bicycles..250 turn out for parade!
don’t the Gay Pride parades do WAY better thann that??????????
AL GORE why dont this wussie want to debate over this global warming is it the fact he,ll be proven a liar and all time jerk
David Suzuki assures us Canadians willing to pay carbon tax but that is rather a regressive move. Instead, Canadians should be encourage to buy carbon credits. To that end, I am offering genuine Texas_Canuck Carbon Credits to all Canadians at a reasonably price. Plus NO GST or sales tax! I pay the shipping too. Order within the next 24 hours and I’ll throw in absolutely free an unauthorized biography of David Kowasaki titled: “Everything I Learned About Economy, I Learned From Fruits (Flies)”. Operators are standing by.
Key Words: Find Earth Day’s Dirty Secret*. Hint: Ira Einhorn and corpus delecti.

‘nother comment:
*Did Ira Einhorn show up with his dead girlfriend in the truck? He is the one who started Earth Day.
(Google can find all you need to know.)
The arrogant self proclaiming god – Susuki said today on Question Period that “Canadians are ready for a carbon tax”.
“We met over 30,000 Canadians. They recorded over 500 personal statements about what they would do if they were minister for the environment,” Suzuki told Question Period co-host Craig Oliver.
“And I’m telling you, they want carbon taxes.”
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20070422/green_qp_070422/20070422?hub=TopStories
Well if anyone sees this man, Suzuki, can someone please tell me that born and raised Canadian DOES NOT want carbon tax!
His 30,000 canadians were school children, who Suzuki likes to scare.
Shame, shame on Suzuki. He is a vile monster.
This man, Suzuki, uses tons of fuel to travel in order to spread his propaganda.
I guess he is too arrogant or too stupid to realise that in today’s modern world we are in a digital age.
He could have used Video Conferencing, telephone, computers, and send his press release via email.
Someone should inform this ignoramous of our vast digital technologies.
I would like to toss my hat into the ring to receive carbon credit $$$’s; if anyone would care to send me some filthy luchre I promise to desist from an activity that could potentially generate millions of tonnes of green house gases annually. Furthermore I would make sure that they receive a handsome e-mail certificate with my firm and verifiable estimates of how much they’ve offset.
What do I offer as an offset to any CO2 that my enlightened donors may be generating?
I am a volcano worshipper and have spent considerable psychic energy recently in trying to generate my own local object of reverence here in southern Alberta. Given that volcanoes produce large and measurable quantities of green house gases and precursors to acid rain and can disrupt weather patterns worldwide and given that psychic powers have as much validity as many climate model (algore)rithms; I would promise to restrict my focus of worship to the link that Kate so kindly provides to the webcam of Mt. St Helens ( last major eruption on a May 18… my birthday; coincidence? I think not). Given the sure probabilities of my worship and rites being able to grow a volcano here in Canada and the harm that it would do to our Kyoto targets (for all those real effects would be anthropogenic after all) my restraining, at great personal spiritual anguish, from this potential for catastrophe must be worth millions of dollars per annum and the adoration of peoples everywhere.
P.S. I promise to use my newfound wealth only for good.
P.P.S. I will even share some with you Kate for your service in providing me with an alternative to creating my own personal volcano here in Forest Lawn.
P.P.P.S. If Maurice Strong is on the gravy train, why not moi?
But then, I’m no expert (except for this)
Sincerely,
Robert Albin

I was out riding my bike today, listening to FM radio, the announcer said, “this is Earth Day because it’s the equinox and the day is split evenly between 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness all over the planet”.
Rattfuc: ” … Hey Wimpy- Fer God sake kippers???”
It’s rumored that Homer ate these when he wrote the Iliad.
Just as an adder to the whole Kyoto dialogue. I am a retired executive from the PotashCorp and one of my responsibilties was the Kyoto file. I personally negotiated with the Liberal bureaucrats of the day and I can tell you that their whole stratgey was to meet its Kyoto requirements was through buying hot air from Russia and other nations. Their whole plan was geared to Intensities not total emissions.. Ie so many tonnes of CO2 for each tonne of Potash. Of course if we produce more tonnes of potash if out intensity raio was OK we were good eventhough out total emissions went up.
The Liberals as a government and ultimately you as a tax payer were willing to backstop our energy requirements to $ 15.00 MT of Co2. For the Potash Corp at that time meant about $750,000 per year which we would just add to the price of a tonne of Potash. Who pays for this… The Farmer and ultimately you as a consummer of food.
RL
anon…you’re joking, right??? Please tell me you are

There were approximately 10,000 delegates in Montreal for the ‘Beyond Kyoto’ meeting November 24 -28, 2005.
Delegates attended from all over the world.
A simplified estimate:
IF we assume the average one-way distance travelled by delegates is 1/4 of the circumference of the Earth; and the average weight of a delegate (with baggage) is 91kg or 200lbs (they tend to be a rather well-fed lot) then, if all come by scheduled airlines, we have an interesting computation:
10,000 delegates by 200lbs = 1000 tons.
Average distance of return trip = 1/2 the circumference of the Earth = 12,451 miles.
12,451miles by 1000 tons = 12,451,000 ton miles.
The average fuel consumption per ton-mile by commercial jet aircraft is 1.25 US gallons or 4.725L of kerosene.
Estimates vary depending on the C and H content of the fuel but burning 1L kerosene yields approximately 2.7kg CO2, or 12.75kg CO2 per ton-mile.
12,451,000 ton-miles of delegates → 158,843,632kg CO2 (158,843 metric tonnes or 174,728 short tons) or ~15.88 tonnes (17.47 short tons) of CO2 per delegate.
This ‘contribution’ to the CO2 content of the atmosphere didn’t seem important enough for them to stay home!
Perhaps they are all secretly aware that the GW effect of CO2 ‘maxes-out’ at less than 1/10 the current concentration of ~380ppmv, but can’t admit it because that scientific fact conflicts with their scary message.
anon wrote…I was out riding my bike today, listening to FM radio, the announcer said, “this is Earth Day because it’s the equinox and the day is split evenly between 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness all over the planet”.
Well, I’ll be hornswoggled!….didn’t know there were two vernal equinoxes (equinoxii?). FM announcer must have gone to dipper school.
Nope I wasn’t kidding, that’s what the radio jock said, I was on my bicycle so I memorized it as best I could to subsequently immortalize the words on the internet. Let’s face it, it was only a disk jockey on a pop music station, perhaps bucking for a CBC job some day.
Pd — I do not believe they will ever be exposed in our lifetimes. We will be duped into paying tons of money — likely tumble into a recession or depression — but the perpetrators will slip out of town. When the temperatures start going down (as they are predicted to do in 2012 if not sooner) environmentalists will congratulate themselves that we have stopped the climate disaster in time. Actually — I think the whole scam will be discovered, but not until we are all long dead.
Looks like the Kyoto stuff is really coming to a head. I am wondering if this is an appropriate issue on which to bring down the government. I think it is a particularly meaninful one. The Cons have the only common sense approach to this, in an election context people might seriously listen — and heaven knows there is a lot at stake. Dion could possibly come through with a substantial number of votes if there is any sort of unite the left thrust . . . but if Dion were to actually win, then I would find a degree of perverse pleasure in seeing the economic disaster that unfolds as we meet our Kyoto targets. I know this sounds awful, but I am so sick of the Suzuki crowd mindlessly carrying on about this stuff it would be good to see them get what they are asking for. (Better, of course, to see them thoroughly exposed and appropriately trounced.)
The only thing the greens have to sell is carbon credits and fear.
Anybody who has spent any time at all studying the pros and cons are not fearful and anybody who wants to buy ‘carbon credits’ having fallen for the lies of the likes of like Al Gore and Suzuki deserve to go broke! ( and isn’t Suzuki sounding strident these days. WHO is paying for HIS mouth-What’s Moe Strong got on HIM!?) ( For that matter wonder if Moe and George [as in Soros] have joined forces to scare the beejesus out of everybody.
More people should be listening to Baird and Baird and the government should be spending less time on this nonsense and more on getting tax cuts right and much more plentiful.
But that would be too damned easy, wouldn’t it.
Somebody pushes ‘Global Warming’ buttons and like parrots around the world all of a sudden it is THE most important issue ever.
I wonder how those vessels lodged in the ice off the Grand Banks and Labrador feel about all this ‘warming’ .. I am willing to bet most people don’t believe this assinine nonsense nor are they willing, as Suzuki says, to pay for it.
We absolutely must not fall for this fraud. It will be the absolute death of not only the Western economy but our entire way of life.
And THAT ain’t NO lie!
A couple of things come to mind, “deisel Davey” has a “gut feeling” does he? Perhaps a visit to the john and a nice big bran muffin every morning would help. If anyone hasen’t noticed “ordinary canadians” that is tax-paying folks who haven’t spent their whole lives either in a very privelaged tenure in a university, or sucking on the crusty teat of the C B C have had about enough of “the sky is a-gonna fall unless you-all start writing cheques to my foundation” You are just a whiney little pain in the ass Davey and this hard working canadian whishes you would get a real job.By the way the sea is rising?? have you sold your waterfront Davey???? Just asking.
Bubba the hard working boilermaker wrote this.
If you want to see what the enviro-sleezemongers and liars are really up to, ask them if they’d agree to a dollar-for-dollar income tax cut for carbon tax trade off.
If they care more for the environment than socialism, they’d be happy to trade income tax for targeted consumption tax.
Consumption taxes are more economically effiecient than income taxes. They harm the economy less.
I bet the “greens” are more like watermelons. Green on the outside, red on the inside.
Pukie Suzuki should celebrate earth day by keeping his mouth shut and cutting off all that HOT AIR and the same to AL GORE and the rest of the green cry wolf wacks
