Tim Thorstenson, North Dakota State University;
As a scientist, I find the current strategy of the global warming crusade to be fascinating. Particularly because I am a scientist, I also find it insulting. Everyone should find it very disturbing.
I am referring to the fact that the global warming issue is now regarded as a “moral” matter by its advocates.
[…]
The message of these pseudo-moralists is that “good” people must start by accepting the pre-ordained orthodox conclusion and then work backwards through the claimed facts, making not an intellectual assessment of whether they are indeed true, but rather a “moral” assessment of whether or not they agree with the conclusion. Things claimed as facts which are “good” (in this moral sense) should be embraced and those which are “bad” (in this same moral sense) should be discarded, not because they are factually false, but because they are “immoral”.
In all honesty, this should scare the heck out of everyone. This is an atmosphere in which scientific inquiry is steered not by factual truth, but by a pre-ordained “moral” position. What is at work here is exactly what the liberals have always claimed to condemn. How is this any different from the decree of a radical theocratic dictator who will allow only those scientific conclusions which are approved by his church?

It’s not a good day. The planet has a fever and I’ve got a hangover.

The Kyoto Conspiracy (Gore, Enron, Carbon Trading, Global Warming)
Not one single day goes by in New Zealand now without a reference somewhere to global warming, and New Zealand’s requirement to comply with the Kyoto protocol. But few people realise that Kyoto was the brainchild of a corrupt multinational energy company, looking to make a buck out of the green movement. KEN RING explains
Amidst the talk about the benefits that Kyoto Protocol is sup-posed to promote, it is perhaps forgotten especially amongst the greenies how Kyoto was born in the corridors of very big business. The name Enron has all but faded from our news pages since the company went down in flames in 2001 amidst charges of fraud, bribery, price fixing and graft. But without Enron there would have been no Kyoto Protocol. […]
Enron then started to finance everything related to the global warming hype, including grants to scientists – but asking for results favorable to their interest – “proof” that humans were responsible for the excessive emissions of CO2 through fossil fuel burning. The fire of malaise, now lit and kindled, only required feeding.[…]
As the movement to establish the Kyoto Protocol developed momentum, it was necessary for Ken Lay to build up alliances with the green movement including Greenpeace.[…]
Despite all the handwringing and increasingly desperate hysteria, where global warming is concerned there has been a failure to force this paranoid religion onto the world. Since the Rio Conference in 1992, the greens have tried using the threat of global warming to induce Protestant guilt in us all, to cap growth, to change lifestyles, to attack the car, industry and the Great Satan of America. They have lost. …-

NASA Extinguishes
Global-Warming Fire
By Patrick Michaels
The Cato Institute
2-9-2
It really happened.
The NASA scientist who lit the bonfire of the global warming vanities with his flamboyant congressional testimony 14 years ago, has turned the hose on its dying embers.
There is now no reason for the Bush administration to give an inch on climate change. Sure, energy efficient technologies (like my Honda hybrid) are worth exploring. But there is absolutely no scientific reason for any expensive policy like the Kyoto Protocol on global warming. Mr. Bush led the world by being the first to walk away from Kyoto, and science has proven him correct.
NASA’s James Hansen now predicts precisely the same, small amount of warming in the next 50 years that the much-derided “climate skeptics” predicted all along. According to both the skeptics and Mr. Hansen, the planet is destined for a mere 0.7 degree Centigrade (1.25 degree Fahrenheit) warming between now and 2050. It’s a good thing “W” listened to those skeptics before he decided on Kyoto. If he had waited for NASA, he might have committed the United States down the road to an unwarranted economic disaster for no good reason.
How did Mr. Hansen, once the darling of the green apocalyptics, come to adopt the scientific position they detest? Nature compelled, and NASA disposed. …-

Notice the non-stop hyping of the recent IPCC report. With a lot of stories there is an attempt at a professional, neutral attitude, but not when it comes to this crap. They ooze drooling credulity, they report every word as if it’s absolutely the final verdict.
Sensible climate change article from New Zealand-worth forwarding I think:
Shouldering the burden
The Dominion Post | Thursday, 5 April 2007
OVER THE FENCE – JON MORGAN
The cynic in me can’t resist seeing the climate change issue as being mainly about votes.
Labour has sensed a rising concern about the way we treat the environment and gone green. National has joined in.
Suddenly, the debate about the causes of climate change has ended.
It is too important to wait for more science. We have to act now to save the planet.
All very laudable. But it is farmers and foresters who, so far, are being told they will have to shoulder the burden.
Understandably, they are getting pretty irate.
The policy has taken over and science has been left behind. Farmers who try to argue the science – and conclude that our Kyoto Agreement commitment is fatally flawed – are told they have missed the bus. And I have been upbraided for saying so in a recent column.
But can the bus be stopped? Should it be? It would take a brave politician to repudiate an international agreement.
The United Nations-linked Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports a 90 per cent certainty among the scientists it consulted that humans are responsible for rising global temperatures.
An unhealthy hysteria has taken hold – anyone who doesn’t agree is a loony of the flat earth variety.
But sufficiently large numbers of scientists remain to argue the reverse.
In New Zealand they include such luminaries as Dr Vincent Gray, of Wellington, an expert reviewer for the IPCC and most recently a visiting scholar at the Beijing Climate Centre; Dr Gerrit van der Lingen, of Christchurch, geologist, paleoclimatologist and former director of Geoscience Research and Investigations New Zealand; Professor Augie Auer, of Auckland, past professor of atmospheric science, University of Wyoming, and previously MetService chief meteorologist; Professor Bob Carter, a New Zealand-trained geologist with extensive research experience in palaeoclimatology, now at the Marine Geophysical Laboratory, James Cook University, Queensland; Warwick Hughes, a New Zealand earth scientist living in Pert; and Roger Dewhurst, of Katikati, a consulting environmental geologist and hydrogeologist.
As leaders of the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition they have formulated seven “pillars of wisdom”.
Purely in the interest of bringing balance to this debate, here they are:
1. Over the past few thousand years, the climate in many parts of the world has been warmer and cooler than it is now. Civilisations and cultures flourished in the warmer periods.
2. A major driver of climate change is variability in solar effects, such as sunspot cycles, the sun’s magnetic field and solar particles.
These may account in great part for climate change during the past century. Evidence suggests warming involving increased carbon dioxide exerts only a minor influence.
3. Since 1998, global temperature has not increased. Projection of solar cycles suggests that cooling could set in and continue to about 2030.
4. Most recent climate and weather events are not unusual; they occur regularly.
For example, in the 1930s the Arctic experienced higher temperatures and had less ice than now.
5. Stories of impending climate disaster are based almost entirely on global climate models.
Not one of these models has shown that it can reliably predict future climate.
6. The Kyoto Protocol, if fully implemented, would make no measurable difference to world temperatures.
The trillions of dollars that it will cost would be far better spent on solving known problems such as the provision of clean water, reducing air pollution and fighting malaria and Aids.
7. Climate is constantly changing and the future will include coolings, warmings, floods, droughts and storms.
The best policy is to make sure we have in place disaster response plans that can deal with weather extremes and can react adaptively to longer-term climate cooling and warming trends.
This huge global warming – climate change – hysteria is out of control. As earlier commentators suggested – it has become a vested interest – politicos/mediamighties/superscientists/etc. have to save face – big money has already been spent on this stuff.
The delayed IPCC technical report (supposedly delayed by the US, India and China according to the BBC – which is a not so thinly veiled shot at the US – and conjecture I might add) is due out shortly.
Let’s see the real evidence and the real data.
If there really is a groundswell of opposition amounst scientists ,which is the most likely reason for the IPCC technical report delay, then they need to band together as a group and present their case – that is how you have to battle this stuff.
(The thing that bothers me is that this IPCC stuff is probably funded by the US – because they fund most of the UN.)
Is the earth warming? – probably – you can measure this easily.
Is there more CO2 in the troposphere? – probably – again easy to measure.
Why? – we haven’t got a clue as to why – let alone predicting what’s going to happen in 50 years – lets see the real evidence.
Yes, it is a moral issue.
It is the global warmengers who are immoral in their slight of logic, rhetoric and abuse of science.
We should all pour scorn on these charletains.
Sammy, you must be one of the few still even bothering to watch the CBC. I even gave up ion the radio 18 months ago.
Hans Rupprecht-
God Bless You.
Kate et al,
I must point out to you the self-interest that the government bureaucrats have in all this by a personal story.
In the early ’90s, I was working on satellite image display technology, as a contractor, consultant, for what is now environment canada. When, after much effort and delay and overcoming technical problems, we delivered, the government project manager was not interested, the delivery was confined to the basement. We still got paid though, because we had delivered.
The reason was that, to paraphrase this enviro bureaucrat: “Our focus is now on global climate change”. Through the IPCC, etc.
They knew where the next motherlode of money was coming from – a good scare scam. Global Warming.
AKA Global Fearing.
It was clear to me at the time that this project manager guy had figured out where to put his effort for further money.
These people say if you are against global warming, you are in the pay of Big Oil. However, it is those in favour of Global Warming that are in the pay of Big Government.
Hans, Amen and thank you.
DID YOU KNOW!!!! I have heard from very reliable sources that global warming is a HUGE SCAM!!! It was invented by gun-hating marxist FEMINAZIS!!!! All the money the government is spending on the environment is actually going to the TALIBAN!! oh wait, you already knew that. i’ll just be on my way now…
A real offset would be more CO2 for more Oxygen
Carbon “Offsets” means that you will pay money to some environmental clearing house, to buy off whatever guilt you may be suffering for living like Al Gore or David Suzuki.
A better term for this activity would be “Carbon Penances” or forgiveness for being alive on planet Earth.
This will do ZERO to clean up the environment. It will make guys like Al Gore rich since he owns the leading environment clearing house himself. The hypocrisy boggles the mind. There businesses popping up everywhere to cash in on this stupidity.
What will lead to a clean up of our environment is to reduce the real toxins and pollution that cause health problems in our society which are being belched from smoke stacks all over the planet mostly to provide electrical power and produce consumer products … Hellooo?
CO2 is plant food and that is what is being targeted. This is lunacy! We need more CO2 to help plants grow bigger and faster so they can produce more Oxygen so we can breath easier. That would amount to a real offset … more CO2 for more Oxygen.
Carbon offsets are not offsetting anything but personal guilt. This plan is about appeasement to the self. It is no different than a Catholic going to confession, tossing a few twenties in the basket and having the priest forgive him, then going out and doing more of the same. When you can simply buy forgiveness, why bother changing anything?
This environmental (emphasis on ‘mental’) movement may leave most of us as money-free as it will guilt-free. What will the environment matter if you cannot afford to eat?
There is no big problem with our environment other than it needs a good clean up and a change from coal fired to nuclear energy. Plus, a lot more research into alternate sources and methods of generating power.
The global warming part of it is not our problem since it is the sun and earth going about their business as they would with or without us around to capitalize or go broke on it.
dr. smooth, it’s a free country: if you want to make fun, that’s A-OK. But at least make it intelligent fun. Thanks.
CNN, of all networks, had a segment on today with some man who basically said Al Gore was more dangerous than global warming. Gore is starting to get a lot of negative press and coverage in the US. His refusal to debate or take questions might have something to do with it. Cdns still have to wake up to his scam. Of all the pics, I think someone could put horns on the one of him screaming. What a side by side those would be, Gore as the devil and moses.
Avery good friend iof mine who is a devoted church goer said that his church was aving a special good Friday showing of Gore’s climate terror opus. I also see it scheduled on Canadian cable tonight.
I wonder if the “great Global Warming Swingle” will get the same exposure or see political road blocks in its distibution?
Whaddaya think? Think things are still not screwed up enough that the counter gire film will get a fair showing too?
I’m with you smootie. No doubt about it, Gorebull Warming is the real deal.
Yoop, that’s quite a list of celebrities you’ve assembled. Not a credible scientific qualification in the bunch. They are puppets using their well-known names to focus attention to a problem and I suspect simply mouthing the words from a script. I’m sure a person like Johnny Depp has someone in the know writing the stuff for him.
I also hope they are giving of their time to the cause and not expecting pay for the use of their names for a global problem. That would certainly put a question mark on their sincerity. Do you happen to find out if they were paid for their time in your search of information on these people?
To be honest I have not heard what any of them are saying about climate, so I can’t tell whether or not what they are saying is fact or fiction. All I can say is good on them if by using their names they can spread the message, as long as the message they are spreading is true.
But come to think of it, they are all just as credible as Tim Ball. Now there’s a guy who get paid to spread his message. Paid by oil companies.
Warming not behind hurricane activity-forecaster_( environazis cult will burn him on a stake)

Sonnet on the Goracle’s Spring Visit to Regina
O ye Reginans, soon shall ye be most blest,
That with the warming spring and the Day of Earth
Shall wing the mightiest Voice since Lenin’s birth
Into your Centre Brandt in the windy west.
Then by His apocryphal words address’t
To the carbon curse of which there is no dearth
And summoning all the pow’r of His mighty girth
He shall tell how thy burning fate might be suppress’t.
Then shall ye cheer him long with great applause
And ring him about with sycophantic hand,
Begging indulgence for all thy profligate ways.
And weep ye shall on the altar of His Great Cause
And waste thy gold in many a foreign land
That Kyoto may rule to the end of thy penance days.

Oh you’re talking about Encana aren’t you? Well there is a distinct difference between jumping through the hoops of your masters the way Ball is doing and what Suzuki is doing. I don’t see Suzuki promoting Encana or suddenly denying global warming, do you? Are you seeing the differences between the two yet?
Suzuki tells fibs, on the John Oakely Show. In fact does recieve major $$ from oil & gas.

Thanks, Kate, for the great picture of Algorithm on Mount Doom. I hope lightning strikes! (Sorry!)
And I wish every blessing of this holy season to everyone at sda.
Colder than a witches heart here too at least 10 degrees below normal. Oh my God does mean we are now entering another ice age……will it ever warm up again……..we will all freeze to death………eeeeeeeeeee…..we will starve to death cause we can’t grow crops ………..eeeeeeeee.
Wait…..wait….. crisis over the temperature is up one degree.
Wait…..wait……the temperature has just climbed 2 degrees……….global warming……eeeeeee its global warming……..what to we do…..help help.
This stupidity plays itself out over and over. All one has to be is old enough to remember the panic of the global cooling hype of the 70’s. That why arses like Albatross and his hero Gore(the inventor of the internet) sound like nothing more that shrill Chicken Littles.
Barbara,
Thanks for your encouragement and Easter blessings on you and yours.
I was really just trying to have a little Petrarchian sport with the AGW hysteria phenomenon. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrarch) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonnet)
And to my friends in Saskatchewan, I was not really suggesting that you folks are any more susceptible to the bluster than folks anywhere else. If anything, my fellow citizens here in the ‘Peg seem to have more of that propensity.
Thanks, Albertaman. What a lark and a lot of laughs! Your tongue-in-cheek fearmongering reminds me of Joe Flaherty’s “Blood sucking monkeys from Buffalo” routine.
R-E-A-L-L-Y SCARY!
But, the present situation, where the Joe Flahertys–who are real people with real power–are now taken seriously REALLY IS scary!
The West really needs to smarten up.
Looking at the picture and AlGoreWarm*s oratory, we hear his sermon. . .
Suspect ye not the GM of auto who were shocked that their rudimentary electic car of 1993, the EV1, was a wild and addictive public success. Indicating the death of the ICE engine. So much so, that they gathered every last one and crushed them in a secure GM compound.
Suspect ye not the Chevron / Esso / Texaco of oil who gained control of patents for the large format NiMH battery. The ideaL BATTERY FOR AUTO-MOTION. For nay, they have no wish to keep us dependent upon products of their 8 to 12 Billion$ refineries and distribution networks.
Suspect ye not the governments who, [at the moment], have no idea how to bring in tractor trailer loads of money on the 8 to 16 cents of charge demanded by EVs that can plug in anywhere anytime.
No, ye sinners. Look within thyne own black souls, guilty of tossing tetra-packs and disposable razors with no sense of guilt.= TG
There was an interesting column, “We want Free Kyoto” by Licia Corbella in the April 4th edition of the Calgary Sun regarding Kyoto.
We want free Kyoto
The premise of it was that Canadians were all for Kyoto, as long as it was not them doing the sacrificing.
An excerpt:
The Angus Reid Strategies poll released yesterday found 64% of Canadians believe Canada should live up to its Kyoto commitment, which involves cutting greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) to 6% below 1990 levels.
But when asked if they’d be willing to pay an additional 25c per litre tax on gasoline to help reach that goal, a whopping 71% of Canadians opposed this policy.
Be interesting if Angus Reid asked us if we would buy an EV with a limited range of 50 or 100 miles with a $4,000 rebate. No gas to buy ever!
Ideal for those who work near home.
Never fly for those who risk their lives twice daily on the freeway. You know,.. the smart ones. = TG

Nope. Both receive funding from sources that wish to prove their side of the issue.
One refuses to debate, even though he claims the science is overwhelmingly on his side.*
*Yes, I know, you’ll claim that David Suzuki doesn’t have to debate Ball or Lomborg or anyone else because they lack scientific credibility. Yes, I know you’ll ignore the part where it’s pointed out that Suzuki’s credentials are just as debatable as anyone else’s, because that’s the way you roll in these debates. Pronounce, Exaggerate, Discredit, Mock, and Leave. Go back to class, Alby — I think the professor is taking attendance.
Ok Yukon Gold, so who is this other source of cash you are talking about, if not Encana? Suzuki hasn’t changed his message in years and I remember him warning about the problems of a warming earth in the early ninties. So if this funding you are talking about was supposed to influence what he’s saying, then it has to predate when he started talking about it.
Er, “Fake but moral”?
Tony. You can be sure Layton and Dion will present Kyoto as cost free; indeed we will make big green profits.
I’m also sick of the Albatross garbage of maligning anyone who dares question the moral imperative of combatting climate change. The double standard is frightening.
Suzuki can collect donations from energy companies, Gore can ride his hoax of a movie to the US presidency; but, oh God, Tim Ball receives money from oil campanies.
Suddenly, the methodology of proponents’ science isn’t the issue, it’s some moral issue of stopping big, bad oil, while letting the earth go to hell in the swill of pollution, AIDS, malaria, and deforestation.
Sheesh, from a theory to a reality to a crisis to a moral requirement.
Spare me. The worsening of the crisis is in direct proportion to the next IPCC summary, followed later, of course, by the scientific evidence.
Of course, by all means, its OK for China and India to pollute AND emit. Of course, let’s fine Canada for not getting rid of its 2% emissions of this minor greenhouse gas.
We have to show leadership, like we did in Afghanistan? The only problem with this NDP argument is that these dodos don’t agree with Afghanistan.
Logic is not the order of the day on either side of this debate frankly, and I don’t trust either to be environmentally productive.
Don’t argue Kyoto will be profitable, that’s all. Be honest.
Oh yeah, it’s Dubya’s fault.
Shamrock, Bang on with your comments.
Albatross is the typical leftist born into upper class elitists who loathes his himself and others like him for having so much so easily. However, this type of personality will never give up their cushy life style because he has no clue how a comfortable life style was created in the first place and to do it on his own is too scary.
Depending on how much money mommy and daddy has he will search for meaning in self-righteous causes that will ultimately deny developing countries from succeeding because he arrogantly thinks he knows what right for them.
The only hope for this type of personality to see the light is if mommy daddy’s money runs out and learns first hand that wealth is not a bad thing and those that create wealth are usually the first to help. (Leftist are usually cheap because they expect government to pay for everything.)
However, if he doesn’t learn these lessons he will become the poor of this country and those from developing countries worst enemy.
People like him will work to burden industry and developing countries with ridiculous and harmful restrictions that crush economies and that ultimately keep the poor exactly where they are.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions and when the intentions are like those of Albatross’s and Gore’s the road to hell is that much faster it becomes a hard push off a steep cliff.
Albatross,
I’ve declined asking this earlier, only because I’ve wanted to believe it has no bearing on your contributions to our discussions, but it’s the question that won’t go away – how old are you?
Albertaman, sorry but you just struck out in guessing who I am.
I come from an average middle class family. Everything I have, I earned.
geocities.com/albatros39a/Albatross39aPage2.html?1172305340781
It doesn’t really matter what albatros’s real age is. He’s what I call an “adult toddler”: I coined that phrase about eight years ago when I noticed how many entitled, immature, unprincipled, generally ignorant (education has nothing to do with it) adults I seemed to be working with and meeting in my job.
These people are full of themselves and, like toddlers, have very little self-control. In administration, they’re the incompetent ones who do their job very poorly–Rubrics? What rubrics? I don’t acknowledge those.–while harrassing, bullying, and undermining their hardworking staff, whom they beat over the head with every rubric going. They’re the parents who park across the entrance to the parking lot “because there wasn’t any place else” or answer their cell phone during an interview without a by-your-leave. These people are ME-ME-ME, “Don’t confuse me with the facts” all the time. They make a big deal of “tolerance” and fairness, except for themselves.
Albatros seems to fit the bill. So, no matter what his chronological age, he seems to be stuck in an arrested state of development. A society can function with a few of these individuals, but we’re now churning them out at an alarming rate. Too bad for them. Too bad for all of us.
So instead of being upper middle clas he is middle class. This personality is still the poor of this country and the developing world’s worst enemy because he supports the fruit fly guy and Gore’s plan to stiffle ecomonmic growth for little or no gain.
