“This yearโs Oscar goodie bag contained gift certificates representing 100,000 pounds of greenhouse gas reductions from TerraPass, which describes itself as a ‘carbon offset retailer.’ The 100,000 pounds ‘are enough to balance out an average year in the life of an Academy Award presenter,’ a press release from TerraPass asserts.”
“Years ago I saw this teriffic short film on Showtime called The Price of Life, about a dystopian future where at birth each baby was assigned life credits. These credits were to be used in a world of dwindling resources for everything from food to recreation to luxury, and once your credits were spent you dropped dead. Well, of course the rich exploited the poor in their quest to live forever. And these carbon offset credits are exactly that.
“This reminds me of the clause in the Civil War draft law that allowed the wealthy to pay $300 for a substitute. Once again the poor take the punishment allowing the elite to la-de-da guilt free…”

Grifters, scammers and con men prowl the lucrative urban climate-guilt bunco game….what better place to sell climate “penance” than the decadent consumptive trendoid cult in Hollyweird.
This whole carbon footprint thing takes on a new dimension when you actually see the fallacious vaporous wares of the carbon redemption hucksters being gobbled up by climate-porn hedonist buffoons with more money than brains….in some desparate attemt to purchase green morality as they sin away in their non-sustainable decadence.
Reminds me of the monopoly on selling absolution from sin and relief from eternal damnation the Church had until a honest monk named Martin Luther called BS on the church con men.
A little Hebrew poetry for you. I read Psalm 37 this morning, and I could not help but think that the Psalmist must have had Al Gore in mind when he wrote these verses (I submit this somewhat tongue-in-cheek):)
12 The wicked plot against the righteous
and gnash their teeth at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming.
14 The wicked draw the sword
and bend the bow
to bring down the poor and needy,
to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,
and their bows will be broken.
16 Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,
but the LORD upholds the righteous.
Mr. Gore is going to get his – we just need to be patient.
Seems like wishfull thinking to me Eric.
Besides, why should the “lord” have all the fun and hog all the satisfaction of punching out a con man.
Lots of people he’s setting up to be robbed would like to do a little “smiting” too…there’s enough smiting of the wicked to be done on this Kyoto file that I think the “lord” may need some help “smiting” all the “wicked” involved ๐
Has anyone actually checked out this looney toon company to see what it does?
Five bucks says its some office in Los Angeles with a granny answering phones at the front and a printing press putting out worthless certificates in the back.
On recycled paper of course.
Your $5 got you in the correct state: Menlo Park, California.

I don’t care if some retard lefty hollywood ingrate buys “credits” or any other waste of their own money. In, in their narcissistic stupidity, they think they’re saving the world, let them have their foolish delusions. Just so long they don’t inflict it on me.
I just don’t want my tax dollars doing the same.
If the government EVER does that sh*t it’ll be time for a revolution. If “cap and trade” becomes government policy, a “slice and dice” French revolution policy will follow.
I went to this “Terrapass” site and calculated what they claim the average household in California uses. They claim 11,990 pound of CO2 per year.
The release says that “100,000 pounds ‘are enough to balance out an average year in the life of an Academy Award presenter'”
Soooo, offset or not, the average Hollywood lefty uses approximately 10 times the energy that the average person in California uses. Notice also that since there are tonnes (pun intended) of Hollywood people (and other super wealthy) in Cali driving up the average, the number that the average Joe uses would be even less that the average overall.
Yet they pontificate about what the rest of us are supposed to do…
The Grits and Greens are trying to RAISE YOUR TAXES!
The “Carbon Tax” is back on the Lieberal agenda:

We need a lotto on how long it will take before one of these carbon selling credit companies have their ceo is up on charges for pocketing the money, and not one tree has been planted. I think it will happen and someone will be required to repay millions.
Supreme Court made a great decision today, but the ss couples are not happy. No pension benefits back to 1986.
Some fire department will no longer hire white men, as they don’t have enough women or minorities on staff. Stupid decision. Who do you want to respond to a fire, someone who is there because they are a women or minority,(who will always be looked at with are you qualified or there because of sex and color) or a qualified man.
Call me crazy, but how does paying a fine in the form of carbon credits reduce pollution?
We should definitely try to clean up our act, look into developing new technologies, etc, I agree with that.
I just don’t get this carbon credits thing.
Only question I have is: what happened to “action?” I know, I know, it’s such an interesting topic, but the environment is not a problem that you can just throw money at. It certainly makes celebrities and the wealthy feel better about themselves, but until someone actually DOES something about it, we’re in a terrible state of limbo.
I understand that companies are using some of this money to put in “green” policies and practices that will better the environment, but environmentalism as an object of business is not a smart move. If environmental companies are after money, they’ve missed the point.
I a sitting here doing a chemistry course, studying the enthalpy of freezing and the enthalpy of fusion (melting). A great idea came to me. Why don’t we ban the microwave oven? It is so ecologically irresponsible for people to thaw meat quickly when they could have had the foresight to leave it out to unthaw slowly. Better yet, why don’t we just ban any kind of refridgeration???? I guess that would mean no air conditioning in those California mansions, so its a non-starter.
I am still waiting for someone to buy our credits for the car that has not moved for months. Should be worth something. People are starting to get the message that the 10 billion dion wants to use to by credits from china is a very stupid idea. I notice the Terror law fiasco has disappeared from the news. Jane Tabor has an article in the g&m today, and commentators are accusing her and the paper as being pro Harper. Something to do with Kennedy and Finley being paid by the liberals.
The protests coming from Kennedy re dion being bought for votes is, I think, tells me there is something there. Dion is off on a 2 week cross-country tour to improve his image. Sorry, the soft on terror will stick like glue to him and all liberals. Any polls out since the vote. Must be a sign the libs are in big trouble.
The elite can buy their carbon credits and go to hell. I’m not giving up my chainsaw, my lawnmower, my vehicles, my bulldozer, my snowblowers and other items that use fossil fuels just because some washed-up ex-politician who can pass for a robot says so. Hollywood once again demonstrates that it is out of touch with the average person.
Viewership of the msm evening news in the US is going way down. One network lost 590,000 viewers and another 120,000 while ABC gained 500,000. Poor Katie isn’t credible. Wonder how much their love with algore, anti-bush, pro defeat of America has to do with it. Fairness and honesty in reporting would help get these viewers back, but no, they fire a producer. Same with the cdn networks. They all remind me of that comedian who used to say, I get no respect. Fits dion also.
M1 Garand, use that money you don’t spend on carbon credits to put a little more ’06’ aside. It could come in handy later.

If these bastards are going to try to force any aspect of this whole agw thing down our throats, the carbon tax, levied at the final consumer, is the least of all evils. Hit the consumer where they make their consumption decision. At least with a carbon tax, the sheepfold of Lib/Dip/Bloc/Green voters will see that it does have to affect them directly, it can’t be solved by buying “carbon credits” or forcing the burden on specific industries in Alberta. Once they see clearly how it affects them directly, it will maybe get into their noggins that they should start questioning the whole drama. Judging by the reaction in southern Ontario to the current gas shortage, maybe a carbon tax will actually motivate them to think a little harder.
Dream on….
And too bad the rest of us..
remember that hollowwood is in the business of ILLUSION.
they give themselves prizes every year for the newest gadgetry to create ILLUSION.
keep that in mind dear MSM when you give them yet another avenue to spread their ILLUSIONS.
How much carbon was prodused while all those including AL GORE arived in their gas guzzling 4 mpg limos?
That’s why all the Wendy Cukier’s disarming of Canadians – this baloney idea of sending our taxes to China and Russia is the next logical step. Disarm, pillage and burn. One finger salute to ya!
Seeing these “Gift certificates” for global carbon credits reminds me of George Costanza handing out fake Christmas cards at work saying “a donation has been made in you name to the Human Fund”.
Yoop: “M1 Garand, use that money you don’t spend on carbon credits to put a little more ’06’ aside. It could come in handy later.”
If you haven’t a life time supply of this already or have stored the materials to roll yer own, it’s too late now as any effort to “stock pile” triggers a bureaucratic response from your paper trail.
Think “preservation”, think subterranean “sus-teen-a-beel-ity..think globaly and act individually…I learned that from greenie ๐
Did somebody say “Oscars”?

Al Gore profiting from global warming!
Gore, who uses more energy in a month than the average American uses in a year, justifies his high carbon footprint by buying offsets… from HIMSELF.
That’s right – he is the chairman and founder of Generation Investment Management, the company from which he buys carbon offsets. So he’s not buying carbon offsets, he’s buying stock in his own company.

So, let’s sum this up: Here we have a major American politician who is calling for policies that would impose huge costs on society but appears to be profiting handsomely himself; who is leading an extravagant lifestyle while demanding sacrifices from ordinary people; and who is calling on the media to suppress the views of those with whom he disagrees, while at the same time urging more government regulation in the name of “fairness” to his partisan and ideological allies.
Mary says: we should watch for “carbon selling credit companies have their ceo is up on charges for pocketing the money.” This is interesting. It looks to me like the TerraPass people are quite upfront about being a “for profit” company. Essentially they allow themselves to be a conduit for other people’s money into selected environmental-friendly projects. It’s harmless, more or less — except that I would have thought that doners would want to be reassured about how much of their money goes toward environmentally friendly . . . whatever. It’s quite ingenious, really — they collect the money and then don’t have to deliver that much. How the money is spent seems to be at the total discretion of company execs. It’s seems legal to me — I see it as a bit like selling pet rocks . . . pay your money, get a sticker, feel good.
