Canucks in Afghanistan

Celestial Junk has started doing a daily roundup of Afghanistan news. You may be surprised at how different the perspectives are among the various coalition partners. The one thing they all do, is trumpet their own troops. Reading Canadian news, you’d think we were doing it all alone. Reading news from the UK, you’d think that the Brits were all alone. And of course, reading American news gives you the impression that nobody is helping out the US troops. But, if you go to all sources, you will get a good picture of things on the ground.

  1. Why don’t we just buy the poppy production? Give the farmers a fair dollar for it, use some to refine for legitimate opiates, and destroy the rest?
This is a golden opportunity for us. Sure it will cost millions; but seriously, think of the benefits. The afgan farmers get on-side, we deprive the warlords/drug cartels of their chief souce of large funds, we secure a source of raw matrials for Canadian companies to refine codine/morphine/other opiates (which I understand are in short supply in the world market).
    The downside seems pretty small.

  2. Thats one of the ways their talking about to deal with the problem.
Did you know that the Prohibition of drugs causes more harm to communities then their use?
Organized crime and corruption of police and elected officials is what you get. Keeps people from legal work because they make more selling the illegal. Violence from having no laws dealing with the products. You end up with drug dealers setting up shop in communities, using violence to deal with their problems. The shinny lure to attract the youth, they like the money.
All this does is waste money one side spends to catch the other to avoid. What happens if you arrest a drug dealer? Do the drugs stop? What happens if you arrest a bank robber? Bank robberies stop once he’s gone. Rapists, once you arrest them the streets are safe again.
Drug Dealers once you arrest them then you open up a job for someone else who’s just waiting.
All those drugs they got in Regina but that weekend if you went to any popular nite spot you’d see people smoking pot. Didn’t even dent the supply.
If the Taliban were left in power there’d be no poppies growing, because if you want to get rid of drugs you have to kill a lot of people.
Look how many people stopped smoking and we didn’t arrest one for doing it.
