  1. There’s a remedy in that tank for conservatitis.
Lift the lift and stick your head in then take a deep breath.
All the cobwebs and anti-liberal nonsense will leave those dusty old brain cells.

  2. You know, I’ve never banned two people in one day, but as the suggestion you just made would be fatal, I think I’ll make an exception for you. Or would you like to leave of your own accord?

  3. I got a 4 page ad for Macleans magazine today in my Vancouver Sun Newspaper. On the front it states “Maclean’s gets inside the most secretive government in decades.” Also, glowing endorsements from The Globe and Mail and Toronto Star! Wow! I won’t be subscribing.

  4. And, in the latest act of UN insanity, IRAN becomes Vice-CHair of the Disarmament Committee…

  5. Blogwell Fray:
Anhydrous Ammonia is stored in pressurized vessels. It is knifed into the soil where it reacts with and is then held by the soil moisture. And yes, Kate is correct…it would be fatal.
It is a dangerous product to work with, but crop producers use this product as it is the lowest cost source of nitrogen….all in the effort to bring the consumer the lowest priced food in the world.
Being under pressure, there is no “lifting the lid” with this product. But then if you had ever worked a day in your life instead of “feeding at the trough” you might have known that.
    And Kate…be careful

  6. Interesting that you’re talking about ammonia tanks the day after S. Harper issues his daycare dare. I imagine his wild and crazy behavior has got even his supporters spooked.

  7. looks like an anhydrous ammonia spill under the bridge , the troll just came out.
“none shall pass!!! without a payoff to the Liberal Party of Canada”

  8. Actually BCL, I believe Harper’s strategy is nothing short of brilliant. It is not as though his daycare plan wasn’t clearly ennunciated during the campaign.
By placing it in the budget (and thereby making it a confidence vote)he’s firing a shot across the bows of three parties that simply cannot afford an election at present. And further, I’m reasonably sure that the Harper daycare plan could not be advanced without it being in the budget.
Had he not included it, opposition supporters would be setting their hair on fire about “broken promises”.
If the matter passes, we’ll at least get some care spaces, as opposed to the mythical Lib plan that resulted in NONE.

  9. Actually, it isn’t clear that the Tories can afford an election right now either, especially if it is one they precipitated from pigheadedness.
And the “spaces” created are at least a couple of years down the road, after all sorts of “consultations”. Right now there’s just a cash handout. I don’t think anyone believes that they will ever materialize.

  10. There’s a lot of divisions in this country — between the French and the English, between the east and the west. Shouldn’t there also be one between the Catholics and the Protestants?
    Done.
“Only 63 percent of Canadians said they’d vote for a party leader and potential prime minister who is a Catholic, even if they liked the party and its views…Canadians appear slightly more accepting of a prime minister who is a Muslim..”
Just kidding. Sort of. The article in the Ottawa Citizen is real, but I inserted “Catholic” where they used “evangelical Christian”, which pretty much means “American” up here. It’s interesting that they didn’t describe the Protestant Stephen Harper, who was raised in the United Church, Canada’s largest Protestant denomination, as a Protestant, but as an “evangelical Christian’. You can almost imagine the poll question — “How do you feel about an evangelical Christian administration ruling Canada?”
In the 38 years between Trudeau’s election and Harper’s, every PM — Kim Campbell excepted — has been Catholic. In other words, we’ve had a Catholic PM 99.9905% of that time. Now that we have a (gasp!) Protestant PM, suddenly religion is a strong negative, and is being brought up in poll questions.
    Hmm…
    USA: Protestant 52% Catholic 29%
    CAN: Protestant 29% Catholic 43%
Push-polls are going to be the weapon of choice for Liberal media-embeds. We’d better get used to it.

  11. Kate,
Since lifting the lid on a pressurized tank is impossible and the only people with access to such a tank are trained and understand safety precautions there is no chance whatsoever this could happen.
FYI, a breath of ammonia vapour is not fatal and is actually equivalent to using smelling salts (a medical procedure). Long term effects from overexposure are asphyxiation and the burning of moist body tissues like the interior surfaces of the lungs. I did not get this information from the internet rather I am a trained ammonia refrigeration mechanic and to relive boredom we make ammonia jokes all day long.
It is my understanding that the purpose of blogs is to create a better understanding through the airing of views and lively spirited debate. Threatening to ban is like censure and should only be used as a last resort in the case of someone who is beligerent and disgusting.
If you wish me to leave I will do so voluntarily.

  12. Kate, are “bigcitylib” and “blogwellfrey” one and the same? When you threaten to ban one the other one resurfaces?

  13. “And the “spaces” created are at least a couple of years down the road, after all sorts of “consultations”. Right now there’s just a cash handout. I don’t think anyone believes that they will ever materialize.”
BCL: You are describing, perfectly, the day care plan finalized by Ken Dryden under the Martin administration. Good to see you have come around on the issue.

    Gun Registry
    Insider info: system easily hackable
“Late-breaking news has surfaced as we go to press that should make the government move more quickly to kill the registry. John Hicks, former Web master for the Canadian Firearms Centre (CFC), approached the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and reported that anyone with a home computer could easily access names, addresses, and details (make, model, serial number) of millions of registered guns belonging to millions of unsuspecting licensed firearms owners.
“It took some 15 million dollars to develop (the firearms registry system),” said Hicks, “and I broke it inside of 30 minutes.”
The cost to date is almost 2 billion and escalating.

  15. billyboot,
Make no mistake I am not bigcitylib and honestly don’t agree with much he says.
If you dissect the posts you’ll find that my posts are far more intelligent than his.
Tarring us with the same brush is naive and exposes the vulnerable underbelly of conservatism.

  16. Anhydrous Amonia draws itself to moisture. Your eyes will burn and your lungs gasp for air.
    Been there done that.
I had a hose coupling unhook and the safety valve stuck open. My tractor was covered by a blast of gas and I was lucky to get out ofthe cab and run around to the side of the tank and shut off the valve.
That was the LAST time I used it.
I went to 28% instead….more money, but a lot safer.

  17. Not to mention there is no money till the year is up and all the money that PMPM flushed down the provincial toilets called general revenue is freed up for use.
I am glad that Harper’s built so much strength in his first 3 months that he is able to put this in a budget. It’s the one promise of the five I was always afraid he would have trouble implementing.
    And welcome back BSL.

  18. Liberal Childcare “plan”
Throw some money at the provinces, enough to fund day care spaces for 1 in 16 Canadian children. The other 15 are left out in the cold. Liberals will decide who are the “most deserving” 1 in 16 children
CPC Plan – fund ALL Canadian children under six.
    Support choice in childcare.
    Support equity in childcare

  19. Did anyone catch the (other) gay Vancouver NDP MP on Mike Duffy yesterday?
He’s representing a gay and lesbian bookstore (I think it’s called ‘Little Girls’) that’s suing the federal government for funding in order for it to overturn a ban on allowing it (the bookstore) to import obscenely pornographic material involving children.
The basis of their law suit is ‘discrimination against a minority’ of course.

  20. GL1800,
You are absolutely correct. A blown hose or line is what I fear the most. Another point to make here is that when liquid ammonia is pressurized in a tank then pressure-temperature laws apply. This means for every degree the tank or hose warms there is an increase of pressure. If sufficient space is not left for expansion a violent explosion could occur.
    Have a safe day.
    I used to own a GL1100. A great bike!

  21. EBD — I totally disregard any and all “poll results” articles in our MSM. It is just so much make work crap. The Vancouver Sun litterally has one a day, usually on the front page. Depending on how the questions are worded, I think you can pretty well manipulate the answers to get the results you want.

  22. Tory Daycare plan. 1) Give everyone with a kid under six enough money to go for a single diaper run per month, 2) have no way to ensure that it is being used on diapers, 3) get the Theocons to come out and argue that this is the daycare system mandated in the Bible.

  23. liberal ‘plan’
HUGE money pit! Professionals raising children who are too sensitive to play musical chairs.
Can you imagine the power the unions would have if daycares went this way? How long would it be till those careing, loving early child dvelopment professionals went on strike?

  24. BCL: Assuming Harper’s proposals pass, the results should be better. I quite like the idea of money going directly to the parents; I trust them to spend more wisely than distant officials. Also, I really like the idea of the $500/year for kids’ sporting activities, given the lack of PT in schools and the whole obesity problem among the young. When my kids were young, it was a strain to support the hockey etc., although we did manage. And finally, the tax incentives for businesses etc to develop care spaces again sends the money to the provider rather than having it filtered through the bureaucracy.
And once again, I don’t see how spending of this magnitude could be introduced without the proposal being in the budget. So, Harper’s choice is either dropping the idea entirely for now (breaking a major campign promise), or playing chicken with the opposition.
I personally think he’s making the right choice and that the opposition will fold on the issue…interesting developments ahead in any event.

  25. Or, Bruce, he could negotiate. Bring up the space creation part of the plan so its not an afterthought pushed down the road a couple of years and probably forgotten.
Cut the tax incentives nonsense (which have, historically, not worked) and invest directly in spaces.
I don’t think Harper’s move is particularly wise politically, since the Lib approach is far more popular in the country and since there are already municipalities like The Soo who see themselves losing spaces because of the Harper plan.

  26. Iraq the Model: Death in the Family

Kill us, but you won’t enslave us.
Last week we stopped writing for a while and we apologized to our readers saying that we lost a close friend but we didn’t want to give more details as we were overwhelmed by an exceptional situation and a huge shock. We also were afraid from writing more about this subject for security concerns but now I think I must share this with you as it’s part of the pain and suffering my nation is going through.
Last week our little and peaceful family was struck by the tragic loss of one of its members in a savage criminal act of assassination. The member we lost was my sister’s husband who lived with their two little children in our house.
He was a brilliant young doctor with a whole future awaiting him, the couple were the top graduates in their branch of specialty. They had to travel abroad to get their degrees and the war started while they were there but months after Saddam fallen they decided to come back to help rebuild the country and serve their people.
We welcomed them with all love and care, we would sit and talk everyday about our hopes and dreams for a better future for the new generation and for their two little children. We realized that time is needed before they could have a secure and prosperous life and we were satisfied with the little we could make because we believed in the future. + more

  27. Hey lib who won the election?
The Liberal plan was panned. The conservatives have the right to implement their promises and then go back to the people for another judgement. You’ll get your chance soon enough.
Of course 13 years and no childcare spaces created. Great record.
Millions stolen, envelopes filled, nothing for candada’s kids…

  28. I have seen in the press that comment to the effect that tax incentives have not worked in the past. I just do not believe it.
I have a couple of businesses. I pay close attention to the implications of the various tax incentives that are open to me, and, where applicable, take advantage of them.
Although my employee mix would not likely cause me to set up an in-office day care facility, if the demographics were suitable, I believe I’d do it in a heartbeat. For the tax incentives…well, that’s a motivation. The biggest attraction, however, would be on the basis that it would have a positive effect on employee morale to have their children in a quality facility proximate to their place of work.

  29. Life Of Glamour
Winds have been gusting to 50 mph, and we’ve been suffering through a dust storm all day.

Those pics of you painting the tank are right out of a movie where some John Depp type pulls up and asks for directions. Takes a double on you and sticks around.
The glamour in your life is you Kate. And a really great set of brains too.
Flattery without a purpose. Just really glad you exist.

  30. The Liberal daycare plan is crap.
Instead give the money to the parents and the marketplace will respond with private daycares.
These daycares will find their own level and have to answer to parents if things were to go wonky rather than a bunch of it’s the government’s fault or that’s the policy nonsense.

    Going Nuclear
    A Green Makes the Case
    By Patrick Moore
    Sunday, April 16, 2006; B01
In the early 1970s when I helped found Greenpeace, I believed that nuclear energy was synonymous with nuclear holocaust, as did most of my compatriots. That’s the conviction that inspired Greenpeace’s first voyage up the spectacular rocky northwest coast to protest the testing of U.S. hydrogen bombs in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. Thirty years on, my views have changed, and the rest of the environmental movement needs to update its views, too, because nuclear energy may just be the energy source that can save our planet from another possible disaster: catastrophic climate change. +

  33. Gabby,
What’s beligerent and disgusting in my posts? Specifics please.
Thanks for defining a true liberal. Encouraging by challenging someone to bring up the level of their communications.

  34. I don’t necessarily agree with cutting a cheque for $1,200 per kid…I would have preferred tax relief for valid daycare receipts totalling $1,200 per year. But, then again, that wouldn’t have addressed the stay-at-home parent issue. So, maybe the $1,200 per kid isn’t so bad.
As for the Fiberal’s promise to fund daycare, Colin’s right…they’ve been promising daycare funding for years and, “gosh, how could that have happened”, they just weren’t able to find a way to do it in all that time.
“But THIS time, really, honest-and-for-true, we MEAN it THIS time…just vote for us, okay?”. We’re not ALL suckers like you seem to be, BCL. “Fool me once, shame on you…fool me twice, shame on me”…what number were we up to with the Fiberals? Four? Five?

  35. Man, it’s tough to be poor and have to pay taxes.

  38. I love the Conservative daycare plan. Let the PARENTS decide how thier kids get raised, keep big government out of our homes. Its a nice, simple to administer plan that will take very little beurocracy (apologies for spelling, I’m not well today) to enact.
And then the Liberal plan, big brother knows best social engineering nightmare that ate MILLIONS and created nothing.
I’m a father of two, and I’ll pick PM Harpers plan any day of the week.
BTW, in the short time they’ve been in power, its amazing how many promises have been kept, and how many decisive decisions the Conservatives have made. Canadians are starting to believe again. Heck, my brother quit referring to going to the washroom as “Making a politician”

  39. BCL said:
“Its a minority. The Tories didn’t “win”; they just avoided losing.”
Of course the rejoinder to this patent nonsense is to assert “The LIEberals didn’t ‘lose’; they just avoided winning.”
In the words of R. Budd Dwyer, former treasurer of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as he brandished the handgun with which he shot himself in the head moments later:
“Stay back, this could hurt someone.”
So 3 children later, now aged 18, 12 and 8 I have exactly no use for the so called LIEberal daycare plan as they are too damn late!!! I would like to thank the LIEBERALS for their timely plan which was announced in the 1993 RED BOOK (edited by Chairman Mao no doubt)!
Well at least we don’t suffer idiots lightly.
Especially selected for Big City Lib in the words of one in his gallery of heros:
When Karl Marx, asked by his housekeeper what his last words were he replied:
Go on, get out! Last words are for fools who haven’t said enough!

  40. BCL – I can tell you are not a parent. My $1200 will go straight into his education savings plan, so in about 2021 you can brainwash him.

  41. “He’s representing a gay and lesbian bookstore (I think it’s called ‘Little Girls’) that’s suing the federal government for funding in order for it to overturn a ban on allowing it (the bookstore) to import obscenely pornographic material involving children.”
My guess is that the name of the bookstore is really “little sisters”. It has been the centre of controversy for some time for attempting this stuff.

  42. Breaking News – Toronto Hiring Undercover Investigators To Pose As Homeless People For Census
    * Known Problem May Invalidate or Skew Data
    * Original Story – Please Credit Lost Budgie Blog *

    http://lostbudgie.blogspot.com/2006/04/breaking-news-toronto-hiring.html
On the night of Wednesday, April 19, 2006, some 1,700 volunteers will fan out across Toronto in an attempt to take a census of homeless people sleeping on the streets, in parks and at City of Toronto homeless shelters…
…and waiting for the volunteer census takers will be a small army of undercover investigators, actors and students posing as homeless people for the night. Students will be paid $110 for the night, while professionals will be paid more.
But although these “undercover homeless” people are designed to act as “controls” to enable auditing of the census, their very presence threatens to skew the data – because few of them will be alone.
“I’m bringing a friend with me” said “Mary” – who contacted Lost Budgie a few minutes ago with the story.
“I need the money, but I’m scared sh*tless to be out alone at night pretending to be homeless with a bunch of genuine stinky homeless people. Some of these people are on the streets because of addictions or because they have a record of violence and aren’t allowed into the shelters anymore. I am scared sh*tless but I need the money.”
So what will happen when a census taker talks with “Mary” and her friend?
Both the undercover investigator and her friend will be noted as homeless in the census – but only one will be a known control.

  43. Two things that we seem to forget: TAX rebate of any kind is not a ‘gift’ ‘given’ to parents or provinces: IF the money goes to parents, it is their own back to do with what needs to be done. IF it goes to the provinces, it represents further taxation not directed where it belongs, back in the hands of those from whom the government took it.
When will we learn that the government is OUR body of choice. And they do our bidding.
As we voted, so goes the government: WE voted in the Conservative platform and what it represents: REAL value for our tax dollars and REAL accountability for what government does with OUR money.
BCL should get it straight: WE, the voter, decided what government we would have. There is no such thing as ‘avoiding losing’… that’s just nonsense. In politics as in many things, it is either win or lose.
As for the Daycare Plan Harper has included in the budget, or will include in the budget: It is right for him to do so and right for him to challenge the opposition, both lib,ndp and bloc to make it a confidence motion. Money motions always are.
And you can bet they won’t like that because if we go back to the polls so soon after Jan 23 it will be the libs, ndpers and bloc who will pay the price and the majority the conservatives should have had will be theirs.
This government, even in such a short period of time, and notwithstanding the msm’s bitter attempts to de-rail, has proven to be very popular with most everybody.
They have shown they can and will do what they were voted in to do and adhere to the will of the people.
That is refreshing after such a long drought of crime, corruption, malfeaseance and all manner of ill-gotten gain.
So, BCL and all you libbers: watch and learn.

  44. Excuse me for asking but where does it say that bearing and raising children is an entittlement and should be fully funded by the government? BNA, Charter of Rights, Liberal Red Book? The fact that PMSH is proposing to “help out” by giving $1200 and the $500 sports grant should be looked upon as a bonus. All up to the election I heard people moaning about how the $1200 plan wasn’t going to completely pay for little johnny’s day care and such as if it was the government’s job to raise their kids. Having children is an expense for sure and if you cannot afford it then don’t have them!
Don’t worry Blogwell fray, Kate might be having a bad day or something. After all, she is still letting BCL drabble on and that person is a complete jerk with no redeeming values.
–> Standing by for Blithering Retort —>

  45. Lost Budgie,
This census is totally nuts. All you have to do is try walking the streets to know there are far too many homeless. The censuus is a costly smokescreen for politicains of all ilks to say, look at me I’m doing something.
My suggestion is to create a rehabilitation shelter in Saskatchewan and ship them all there. Train them to be contributing members of society or be instituionalized for the rest of their lives.
Rudolf Guliani did this in NYC and it worked.
