Federal Finance Minister Ralph Goodale is saying an attack ad running in Quebec was never endorsed, approved or released by the Liberal Party.
Goodale argues it is not about the ad itself, but the judgement that was made on it. The Liberal Party chose not to run it, and that he contends, is what is important. He admits politicians must be careful not to make damaging assertions without the evidence to back it up.
Paul Martin defended the series of controversial ads his Liberal Party unleashed this week and continued his attack on Stephen Harper, painting him as a leader who subscribes to a far right-wing ideology.
In an interview Thursday morning on CTV’s Canada AM, Martin said he approved every one of the harshly critical ads — including one that suggested the Tory Leader would use the military to occupy Canadian cities.
Seems nobody told the Deputy Prime Minister, either.

Wisdom from my last African safari:
“Before sawing the tusks of the Great White Elephant for a trophy, make sure the beast is truly dead or you may get gored to death.”
The demise of the Liberals is being celebrated a little too soon. Although they have faltered every week of the campaign, it is certain that they have a few salvos left in their arsenal. In particular, every campaign they have ever run ends with selective dirt of their opponents being released to the media. I believe that we are now seeing the start of this with the attack ads rehashing old quotes from (or about) Stephen Harper.
Also, I don’t think it was any accident that Derek Zeisman’s problems with the law came out now…near the end of the campaign and after the Conservatives could replace him. (Knowing our current government, it would not surprise me if the charges against him were deliberately hidden from the CPC when they did their security checks.)
Look for more leaks to the media in the next week and a half as the Liberals unload whatever dirt they may have left on the CPC.
I find it amazing that PMPM talks about honesty and integrity. He speaks on CTV and says he approved the ads. Many Liberal candidates are saying the ad was offensive, and are distancing themselves from it at the speed of light.
Others are saying it was a mistake yet it continues to run in Quebec.
Who to believe..who is running this joke of a party
They cant even get their stories straight in a major damage control exercise.
Now I really believe that PMPM knew nothing of adscam.he is totally out to lunch..he couldnt have even comprehended what was going on..he is a simpleton who will say anything to anybody for a vote…..so much for integrity.
I have never seen such an abysmally run campaign ever.
Thank God
Ron
I have a little different take on the Animal Farm theme:
The current liberal strategy and in fact the past 13 years could have been scripted by George Orwell himself. Jean and Paul (Major and Napoleon) ovethrow the evil Farmer Mulrooney and begin setting things straight on “The Farm”.
Throw in some aspects of “1984”, say “newspeak”:
Da proof is da proof, an investigation is not an investigation, an ad is not an ad, I didn’t approve the ad/I did approve the ad……….I could go on here….
Include the “thought police” (conservative hidden adgenda, canadian values) and we pretty much have the story of our great Liberal social revolution.
Do you remember what happened to the pigs Ron?? They got drunk with power and corrupted beyond repair. Sound familar??
The rest of us animals have had enough!!!!
Goodbye Pigerals!!!

There is a very interesting report on the Reuters news wire released today you my find a wee bit enlightening.

I agree with you, now is not the time to pop the Champaign corks yet. So I will venture a guess, I can at least put it on ice.
its in the stars folks…
went out for a puff and there’s a nice full moon out there. tomorrow is friday the 13th. saturday is known, for some reason, as a wolf’s moon. triple jeopardy.
Nothing wrong with posting Canadian Soldiers in Canadian cities-Ottawa would be a good place to start.
RG says PMPM did not approve the ads. PMPM on national TV says he did approve them and pulled the military ad because it “wasn’t that good”.
Wow!!! They can’t get thier stories straight on this and I’m supposed to believe them on the IT scandal??? Why??? Because they investigated themselves and concluded they are as pure as the driven snow???
Holy Shit Batman!!!!

The only excuse for this melt down Paulie is having is he is a compulsive liar. He has gotten away with not answers questions in the House of Commons, or he denys any knowledge of events. Paulie has dug himself into a hole, instead of stopping he just keeps digging! It is long over due for the Liebreal’s to have a complete cleaning of their party. I hope we can say good bye to Paulie, Ralph, Scream’n Annie,

Harpers Performance Drops 18 points…

I just figured it out! The Liberals want to ban all guns. No handguns for collectors. No rifles for farmers. No sidearms for border security. No guns for the military. I makes perfect sense now!
Ron’s back – at least I thought he’d been away for a while. The Liberals are doing very well without you, Ron. Martin does so many turn-arounds I don’t wonder you can’t keep up to them, but at least try. You do think, don’t you?

WMD threat: PM
SADDAM’S MISSING WEAPONS IN TERRORISTS’ HANDS: MARTIN
By STEPHANIE RUBEC, OTTAWA BUREAU, SUN MEDIA

Prime Minister Paul Martin says he believes Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and they’ve fallen into terrorists’ hands. Martin said the threat of terrorism is even greater now than it was following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, because terrorists have acquired nuclear, chemical and biological weapons from the toppled Iraqi leader.
“The fact is that there is now, we know well, a proliferation of nuclear weapons, and that many weapons that Saddam Hussein had, we don’t know where they are,” Martin told a crowd of about 700 university researchers and business leaders in Montreal. “That means terrorists have access to all of that.”
‘NOT OUT OF IT YET’
The PM’s comments run counter to opinions expressed by leaders in such countries as France and Germany who have accused the U.S. and Britain of fudging evidence of WMDs to justify the war against Iraq.
When asked to assess the threat level since Saddam was captured by U.S. troops, Martin said he believes it has increased.
“I believe that terrorism will be, for our generation, what the Cold War was to generations that preceded us,” he said. “I don’t think we’re out of it yet.”
Martin disagreed with former prime minister Jean Chretien, who publicly blamed poverty for terrorism and the Sept. 11 attacks. “The cause of terrorism is not poverty, it is hatred.”
He said he’ll lead the charge to convince countries to join forces to combat terrorism and make sure the Third World has the tools to stamp it out.
Martin said he’s lobbying the international community to set up an informal organization to tackle world issues such as terrorism.
GETS NOD FROM BUSH
He said he got the nod from U.S. President George Bush during his visit last month to Washington, D.C., and will take his idea to the European Union and Latin America next.
arthurdecco: has it ever occurred to you that people change their opinions over time, after receiving new information? Harper’s position on troops into Iraq may very well be the result of that. Why bring up the 1993 anti-Chretien ads? Even Conservatives found them embarassing. How far back do you want to go? Liberal PM Mackenzie-Kings’ remarks from 1936 in praise of Hitler? Ridiculous. Shouldn’t you mention John A. McDonalds’ drinking problem?
Lots of people believed the “weapons of mass destruction” story. Chretien didn’t keep Canadian troops out of Iraq because of a deep moral conviction against war. There was simply nothing to gain for him. The Liberals have always acted based on what’s good for the Party, not necessarily the country.
I assume you are one of those rare geniuses who always make the right choices, and never have to backtrack, or admit mistakes. Perhaps someone should consider founding a religion with YOU as Messiah.
With respect to the WMDs that are unaccounted for due to the US intelligence community blunders; even if one accepted that there may be a few out there one must ask the question:
Why on earth would slag the professionalism of the very soldiers; who would ostensibly be part of the solution, in solving global terrorism with respect to WMDs? Worse, why would one make soldiers appear as they are part of the terror problem, cast as ravaging the home population.
Secondly, given the US intelligence failures it would appear that Stephen Harpers plan of having a Canadian spy agency would go some distance in rectifying the US intelligence community failures.
At least Canadian Forces would have some decent independent intelligence; before they are willy nilly thrown into places like Iraq/Iran. This would act as a brake to going off half cocked; by back stopping proposed missions with multiple sources of intelligence.
In short, you get your facts straight, BEFORE you pull the trigger.

Prime Minister Paul Martin: “…I approved this ad.”

That wouldn’t be a bad idea, dmorris. LOL! Then I could live every conservative’s wet dream – a tax-free existence! 😉
In all seriousness, I’ve made and faced up to more mistakes than I care to remember right now. Any thinking human being is going to make mistakes. That’s how we all learn.
My problem with Harper, (and its not going away!) is that he has never admitted making mistakes or admitted that some of his previous public pronouncements are now a source of regret for him. If in fact his opinions have changed, don’t you think he has a responsibility to explain to those of us voting in this election his reasons for those changes?
I certainly think he owes me an explanation, as should any thinking, responsible voter in these troubled times. Yet I have not seen a SINGLE serious response to my original question asking if it was reasonable to NOT expect Mr. Harper to explain himself in this huge on-going thread.
Unfortunately, most of you seem to be too busy circle-jerking discussing non-issues like the legitimacy of the “military ad” to consider the ramifications of a leader unwilling to explain sudden, dramatic changes in his public policy positions.
Some of you may remember that in the book, 1984, that’s exactly what happens – the government switches policies and NEVER explains to the public the reasons for it. Doesn’t that parallel concern you even a little? Not even ONE of you?
Is there not one of you with the courage and curiosity to deal with this issue head on right now?
Regarding the ‘Dingo’ parody on Rutherford today… found a link with the ad and a few other parodies…

They are quite funny.
Well Atrhurdecco I’ll give you an example of Mr. Harper apologizing for pevious statements. One of the current Liberal attack ads refers to Mr. Harper making a statement that eastern Canada has a “attitude of defeat”. Last fall, while on a tour of the maratimes he apologized for the statement on network TV.
Does that help art??

People people.
Let’s calm down and have an inquiry as to why these ads that have been pulled in english Canada are still running in Quebec. I’m sure an independant jurist can be found to investigate this incident and discover that this was done by some rogue elements of the Liberal party in Quebec. These are bad people, not good Liberals, that have infiltrated the party and commited these acts without the PM’s approval or knowledge. He’s nad as hell and he’ll get to the bottom of this and fix everything so that it never happens again.
Deja vu,
(sarcasm off)
Where have I heard this explanation before???

Is anyone in charge of the Liberal campaign?
Prime Minister Paul Martin says he approved the release of the now-infamous anti-Harper attack ad:
In an interview Thursday morning on CTV’s Canada AM, Martin said he approved every one of the harshly critical ads — including one that suggested the…
Goodale: “An attack ad running in Quebec was never endorsed, approved or released by the Liberal Party.”
Martin: “I approved every one of those ads.”
Keith Martin: “Some idiot inadvertently sent out an ad that was not approved and not supported by the party with the 11 (ads) that were supported,”
Martin: “I approved every one of those ads.”
Anne McLellan: “The ad was never approved by the prime minister and should have never seen the light of day.”
Martin: “I approved every one of those ads.”
John Kerry: “I voted for the war before I voted against it.”
Martin: “I approved that ad before I disapproved it.”
I guess this is Martin’s John Kerry moment. The others? Well, I guess they’re all liars.
Nope. I ain’t making this up either. No matter how hard I tried I could never make this up. The above would make a great ad for the CPC doncha think?
Why is it, that every time Goodale opens his mouth road apples spew forth?
Martin on AM was so sad.
I like his tactic though. Instead of finding out who I am and then basing his campaign on what’s important to me (read; i’m a Canadian), he decides to tell me why Harper would make a bad prime minister. Brilliant.
Let me give you some advice PM…..if you were in prison, and you tried that same tactic, you’d quickly become of the property of ‘Tim’ and ‘Bubba’ and would be traded from cell to cell for a pack of cigarettes until you’ve “made friends” with everyone.
And don’t look to the guards for help….they aren’t allowed to have guns in Canada….
Kate and fellow SDA readers, this is the key question that you must ask the Prime Minister:
“Mr. Martin, rightly or wrongly, many Canadians felt that the ‘Soldiers in the streets with guns in Canada’ ad you approved implied that the Canadian Forces are a threat to Canadians. If this interpretation is correct, it would be an extremely serious problem for Canada. You have stated before the public and the media that this interpretation is wrong and that this ad merely refers to the most effective basing of our Forces and their logistical systems. Since it is virtually unprecedented in history for a ruling national leader to imply that his own army is a threat to his country during an election campaign, will you release all ad development memos, meeting minutes, emails, and other documentary evidence proving your claim that this attack ad was about efficient logistics and not, like Pinochet, about martial law?”
My name is Chris Dollis. I am a Canadian civilian.
Once, I was an Army Reservist, and my record was unremarkable.
Yet I have enormous pride in the people I served with and the people who still serve in both our Regular and Reserve Canadian Forces on air, land, and sea. They are the best young people you could imagine.
As someone who has a keen interest in military history and who observed military morale on the ground first hand, I understand how important it is for a person who has not only volunteered to endure discomfort, injury, and death, but to give up their Saturday night at an Officer’s whim, that their government and their people support them.
Our soldiers are mostly peacekeepers today. They also help us each year digging out from snow storms, delivering people from floods, rescuing fishermen and families lost at sea. When they fought, they fought great evil, almost unbelievable evil, and they triumphed.
And when they came back home to Canada, they put down their dirty boots, picked up their pens, and went back to work in the offices across this country alongside you and I. Some were farmers, some doctors, a few were so injured and battered up mentally or physically that they never worked again.
They are heroes and, more importantly, they are good, hard working, honest, decent Canadian men and woman and they love this country.
Sincerely,
Chris Dollis
P.S. The answer to this question is essential to setting the historical record about the Paul Martin government and its relationship with the Canadian Forces straight.
Unfortunately, most of you seem to be too busy circle-jerking discussing non-issues like the legitimacy of the “military ad”
Non issue? Tell that to the good men and women that serve this country to protect your ass.
Paul Martin himself admitted approving that ad,only after facing descent in his ranks and from the public did he start to back peddle on it.
Obviously, the Liberals thought it was legitimate, they paid for it.
Amidst all the back and forth about whether the anti-military attack ad was approved or not before it was withdraw, almost everybody seems to miss the point that it was always destined to scare wavering Federalist francophones in Quebec (who remember without fondness the time when the Liberals sent the military into the streets) AND IT IS STILL PLAYING IN FRENCH! Go listen to the “Pour et Contre” add on the Liberal.ca website right now and you will see the army in all our cities line repeated. “Im not allowed to make this stuff up”.
