Yet another Liberal-tied firm making timely profits?

Cargojet is leasing the gas-guzzling 727 Paul Martin is using to fly around the country, a plane he is sticking with despite the bad press it has generated.
Cargojet’s founder and CEO, Ajay Virmani, is a big Liberal Party supporter. Thousands and thousands in donations, both personally and by Cargojet.
So does it come as any surprise that just before Ralph Goodale announced favourable tax treatment for income trusts, that there was a spike in trading in units in Cargojet’s income trust fund?
Depressingly, no.

  1. Good show, Angry! More about Cargojet from today’s edition of – wait for it – The Bermuda Royal Gazette:

“There is a new plane delivering overnight cargo to and from Bermuda. Canadian company Cargojet has taken over the role of cargo carrier for the Island from previous operator Can-X.

This new service will provide both Canadian and US-based shippers direct air cargo service to and from Canada to Newark and Bermuda, which will be serviced by our current fleet of Boeing 727-200 Advanced Freighters, said the company in a statement.
Cargojet is expecting to increase its annual revenue from between $6 to $8 million.”

I guess it makes sense that they charter a bloody cargo plane to haul all of that loot to tax-haven Bermuda.
The Globe Investor (subscription) had an article on income trusts on Nov. 30th stating “Cargojet Income Fund, Canada’s dominant independent cargo airline, has an estimated $1.10 a unit in annual distributions. That gives it a yield of just over 11 per cent.” http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/Page/document/v4/sub/MarketingPage?user_URL=http://www.theglobeandmail.com%2Fservlet%2FArticleNews%2FTPStory%2FLAC%2F20051130%2FRJAZZ30%2FTPBusiness%2FMoneyMarkets&ord=1134309096732&brand=theglobeandmail&force_login=true
A good discussion of this issue at http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/2479092/
Starjet (AKA Cargojet) operates 2 B727-200 passenger aircraft with a contract for the Toronto Bluejays, and also recently flew Prime Minister Paul Martin across Canada for the Liberal party campaign, as well as several teams in the 2004 world cup of hockey.

  2. makes ultimate sense that the Liberals would have their exit from Canada strategy all worked out–shouldn’t be hard to follow them though–with all that CO2 pollution we just have to send the Kyoto gang after them? Guess they and their trough buddies don’t have to take the one tonne challenge?
Now, does anyone of our customs agents(you know, the ones that Screeching Annie has invested billions of our dollars for ‘security’) inspected what is on these plane’s cargo? Do we know if bags of our tax dollars are leaving, post haste, before the Liberals get deleted from the political picture in Canada? To hell with the terrorist threat–I want to know if the real terrorists in Canada, the LPOC, are making off with the loot they tell us they are ‘entitled’ to.

  3. THIS Conservative press release on Paul Martin’s 727 is also of note…

OTTAWA Liberal Leader Paul Martin flew in to Montreal today to boast about his clean air record. Um, but he flew in quite the gas guzzler! Paul Martin is jetting around in a Boeing 727 one of the worlds noisiest and most environmentally unfriendly aircraft. Conversely, the Conservative campaign plane is an Airbus 320 widely respected for its low greenhouse gas emissions and noise control.
According to the European Commission, The noise level of an Airbus 320, is around 20 dB less than that of a Boeing 727 40 years ago. And when it comes to aviation fuel consumption – and thus the volume of greenhouse gas emissions the reduction is around 70%. http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/rtdinfo/en/28/aero3.html
Statistics released by the Air Transport Association of Canada in 2002 reveal that the Boeing 727 burns 1,289 gallons of fuel per hour, compared with the Airbus 320 which burns just over half that amount, at 767 gallons per hour. (Globe and Mail, June 11, 2004)
Even Boeing admits that its old 727s are archaic noise polluters: “Airplanes that utilize older, less-effective noise technology are being retired. Very few still are flying in countries where the overwhelming majority of the world’s fleet is located. The noise levels of airplane operations will continue to decline dramatically as airplanes such as the Boeing 727 and 737-200 are removed from service.” http://www.boeing.com/commercial/news/feature/quiet.html
Paul Martin once called on all governments to put a shoulder to the wheel to meet promises to cut greenhouse gases (Toronto Star, January 20, 2005). Clearly theres a gap between Mr. Martins rhetoric and his actions.

  4. Something that the insiders who made good bucks should remember – if they are in positions of fiduciary responsibility to public shareholders – they are personally liable to those shareholders, and at risk of being sued, and thus stripped of their assets. Personal liability. Serious consequences.

  5. Paul AdScam-Don’t Income Trust Me- Jackass – Martin: Jean Chretien wanted a legacy, too.
Jackass Martin has a legacy, too. Beyond outrage it is. Beyond satire, ridicule; beyond politics.
An utterly corrupt Paul Martin; an utterly corrupt Liberal Party. Is there no end to it?

Parents of slain teen say prime minister’s proposed handgun ban will do nothing to stop youth violence
    By ALAN CAIRNS, TORONTO SUN
A grieving Yvette, whose eldest son Jason was gunned down on Aug. 30, say Liberal policies have led to youth violence. (Ernest Doroszuk/ Sun)
MAPLE — Prime Minister Paul Martin is a “jackass” if he thinks that banning handguns will “choke off” the deadly weaponry of Toronto street gangs, says a man whose son was slain.
“For this so-called prime minister of ours to come into the low-income areas of this city and make a statement banning guns … I look at him as a jackass … and I’ll never vote Liberal again as long as I live,” said Theodore Huxtable, whose eldest son Jason, 18, was killed on Aug. 30.
And Huxtable gave a stern warning that if justice is not served in his son’s death, he will seek his own vengeance.
“I’ll be part of your news … I’ve told police the same thing … they say ‘Mr. Huxtable, you shouldn’t make these statements’ … they can’t say I didn’t warn them,” he said.
Huxtable said his family’s grief is so overwhelming that he just doesn’t care.
His eldest son, Jason Huxtable, a loving, friendly, gentle, hard-working churchgoer, was slain in his car at a Magellan Rd. townhouse complex, near Jane St. and Shepherd Ave., in broad daylight as he drove there to give a female friend a ride.
He was not a criminal and did not have gang links. His parents believe he was shot out of envy.
His alleged killer is a 15-year-old boy who is charged with second-degree murder. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, his name cannot be published.>>> more

  6. I wonder what cargo gets hauled back to Canada and if it’s ever checked for illegal substances? Does this company ever fly to and from Haiti?

  7. Another one?
    How’s this for timing?
Thomas Charles Strike, of Canwest / Global Television went from owning no shares of the Canwest Mediaworks Income Fund… to buying 3,000 shares on November 22, 2005.
Canwest (i.e. National Post & Global Television) donates far more money to the Liberal Party of Canada than it does to any other party.

  8. My bet is, a lot of this money is going to be funnelled back, maybe in brown envelopes, to the LPC. A made-in-Ontario Trustscam. There can’t be so many coincidences with direct Liberal connections. No wonder we can’t get an unbiased story from the media.

  9. Its a bit like actor LEONARDO CECAPRIO who flew in his private jet then drives in a big gas guzzler to a big earth day event in WASHINGTON D.C. to give a big SAVE THE EARTH speech what a hypotcrit but those liberals in hollywood just do it for the publicity amd the wretched papperazi

  10. Three short verses that fit Liberals every word and deed.
(with thanks and apologies to Preston Manning)
    Birds Fly
    Liberal Truisms (and ethical guidance)
    Fish swim.
    Birds fly.
    Liberals LIE.
    Pigs snort.
    Sheep bleat.
    Liberals CHEAT.
    Waters flow.
    Slimes congeal.
    Liberals STEAL.

  11. Breaking!
First Scott Reid says on CBC this morning that Canadian parents will spend their $1200 daycare funding on “beer and popcorn”.
(Audio link of interview available at http://www.cbc.ca/sunday/ under “Campaign Promises”)
Then on CTV Question Period today, John Duffy, given a chance to retract by Tim Powers, instead reasserts Reid’s slam on Canadian parents.
    (Video link available at…

I’d say Martin is in for a rough ride on the 16th.
    Anyway…
It’s nice to know exactly what Liberals think of Canadian parents, eh? Certainly clears the air on this topic.

  12. This is a great find Angry, not so much a scandal but it sure shows where their loyalties lie with respect to donations. I mean, Cargojet could make a donation, get a receipt, then make a profit leasing the plane to the very party they are making the donation too….

  13. the world would be a very different place if people only campaigned within walking distance. Members of parliament are representatives of their riding. The prime minister should in no way be a ‘president’ of Canada, the govenor general if anyone has that role as provided by the queen. It is only a nature of corruption and criminality that has the division of commons from the monarchy, we should not attempt to overrule but be equals that is non political in nature for the good and well being of all of canada. We should all rise and have access to justice by being just lawyers and members of the bar and furthermore justices of the public peace and judges of our own actions to royal law, in that we are all representative of the Monarchy and specifically the nature of divinity that it represents.

  14. Did anybody see CTV news last night? Apparently Bloomberg is reporting there was a spike in trading that day. This follows their earlier statement that there wasn’t. Maybe they went back and checked certain stocks. But it looks as though CTV is going to pursue this, albeit reluctantly, I would think. CBC continues to ignore it for the most part.
