Prayer In School

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power,
and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

  1. I remember in the weeks following the attacks of 9/11, our guide to all that is right and good in this country, CBC radio, ran a series over a week, dealing with Islam. I suppose it was fair, as far as these things go: i.e. it wasn’t a complete whitewash. But what struck me as odd at the time was what kind of treatment Christianity, or heaven forbid Catholicism would have received. Would the Illuminati who run the CBC have refused to run a series that was the main competition for the secular humanist dogma? Could such a series have been a fair representation? Would the media, public have srceamed blue bloody murder? How dare the CBC preach to a diverse and multi-cultural population. But Islam, hey, no problem.

  2. What sad times we live in; when people are brainwashed into believing that because Christianity is the belief of our forefathers, people who starved and fought and died to maintain (a) country(s) where all men and women are equal: political and social equality is garenteed from birth under the law and economic equality is up to the individual.
Some people want to be slaves BUT they do not want other people to be free. It is an odd contridiction – one the suicide boomers and their ilk depend on for the distruction of the Free people of the world. Thank-you for the link Kate. It is depressing but good to have in the glossery of brain facts that we can carry around with us.

  3. My post is missing some words, it should read: ‘because Christianity is the faith of our forefathers it is outdated and naive and out of sinq with the 21st Century. Pioneers, people who…

  4. Muslim, Christian, Jew it doesn’t matter.
When the bullets and incendiaries start flying the following axiom is always held as self evident:
    When DEATH is your constant companion;
THERE ARE NO ATHEISTS IN FOXHOLES.
If one wanted to teach comparitive religion, I don’t know if grade school is the appropriate place. It first might be appropriate to ground oneself in one’s own beliefs before engaging in a survey of others beliefs.
Our present age, only seems to accept the axiom that all paths to enlightenment are equal. Plainly, if one is talking terrorism based on a misrepresentation of the Muslim faith the axiom is then false.
I think all the above faiths share the same greeting of “Peace be with you.” Evidently some in the various communities missed that one.

  5. I sometimes find it ironic how lefties can be so anti-christian. If they wish to learn about being open-minded and tolerant, perhaps they should read the gospel. Every free, democratic, and developed nation shares one thing in common. The backbone of thier constitution, and moral thought is grounded in Christianity. I pray God still blesses this agnostic nation we are becoming.

  6. I’m confused – there’s nothing at that link that has to do with school prayer. Not specifically. I suppose generally it’s about religion and public schools in the United States, but nothing specifically about the Lord’s Prayer or anything.

  7. Wow, in Grade 7 I was studying algebra, reading, writing, basic physics and chemistry. We also had to take a home economics course and a wood shop course. We didn’t have time in the curriculum to take a course on religions.
What I find ridiculous in this day and age is that it seems to be okay to teach children about Islam or (insert religion here) but it is totally taboo to teach children about Christianity or Judaism. The study of a variety of the world’s predominant religions (including Christianity or Judaism) should be required in a “Comparison of Religions” course, or barring that, such courses should not be taught at all (If you cannot put forward an objective view of all major religions, then whats the point in such a course if not for indoctrination). I also believe that a such a course if taught, should be taught at the high-school level and should be a social sciences elective so that parents can decide if their children will be exposed to this material or not.
(I guess what I’m saying is I’m sick of these double standards that “ban” the study of certain religions but make exceptions allowing for other religions to be studied.)

  8. Dear LC CanForce101:
I don’t know what it’s like in your province, but in Ontario, there’s a high school World Religions course which teaches the basics of all your billion-plus world religions (Hinduism/Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism (not a billion-plus, but you get the idea)). Perhaps other provinces don’t offer this course.

  9. Yeah, just when I think that everything that is messed up, is “up north”, we (USA)go and do something stupid like this. Add to this, the comment from SanFransisco mayor when asked about his recent outlawing of firearms in his city says something like …we know the law will get overturned on appeal, but we felt it important to make a statement… Silly me, I always thought it was illegal to intentionally do something that is against the law.

  10. You know, back when I went to a catholic school (and dinosaurs roamed the earth), we were taught nothing about anyone else’s religion. In fact, it was the “Evil Empire” that the other kids went to and we should not associate too much with them. But kids being kids and not PC in those days, usually chummed around and had many friends. Most of us would check out each other’s religion if only to find out which one had more benefits as in school holidays, teacher’s conventions and such.
Now if the word God or Christ is used anywhere near a taxpayer’s dollar then it is taboo. As for this case, if this week it was Hindu then next week it was Christian, then Islan, Druid, etc., then I’d have no problem. Problem is that as far as I’ve read this is only about Islam, not a world religion course.
Is there a sinister plot out there? I doubt it but ask Ralph Klein about how something innocent and simple can be said and then turned into paranoia on a national scale.

  11. “..we believe in natural rightsinalienable, endowed not by man (which would leave them open to postmodern challenge and hermeneutic drift) but by a Creator. Inalienable rights cannot be stripped by the Government, and so are beyond the reach of tyrantsan important founding principle…. ”
When I read that I thought of two comparisions.
    Natural law vs legal fictions
    and
    Moral absolutism vs moral relativism

  12. Many people studied Russian during the Cold War. It makes sense to learn about Islam these days.

  13. “Multiculturalism has betrayed the English, Archbishop says”, The Times, Nov. 21:
    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1882591,00.html
    Excerpts:
‘BRITAINS first black Archbishop has made a powerful attack on multiculturalism, urging English people to reclaim their national identity.
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, said that too many people were embarrassed about being English. Multiculturalism has seemed to imply, wrongly for me, let other cultures be allowed to express themselves but do not let the majority culture at all tell us its glories, its struggles, its joys, its pains, he said…
But as a direct product himself of the British Empire, he intends to make mission and a passion for English culture, and the Christian roots of that culture, driving forces of the next decade or more that he will spend as primate of Englands northern province…
He disliked the word tolerance when used in reference, for example, to people of different cultures. It seems to be the word tolerance is bad because it just means putting up with it, he said. I was raised in the spirit of magnanimity. That is a better word than tolerance. If you are magnanimous in your judgments on other people, there is a chance that I will recognise that you will help me in my struggle...’

  14. Get used to it Canada…
We have been ruled by closet socialists now for many years…
We have witnessed back door socialism, creeping into our lives, pushed by people who claim to be Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, the Green Party…
They call themselves anything/everything, but the socialists they are…
They can say ..do ..anything, LIE,STEAL,CHEAT,MURDER,MAIM,KILL, all is acceptable as long as you promote socialism…!!
All political parties have been infiltrated and changed from within…
    Trudeau set that in motion…..!!
History has shown that the first casualty of socialism …is truth…
    The second is religion…!!
The values that define us as christian are under attack from all sides…!
Wake UP Canada…We are being led down a soviet style garden path that leads to corruption, theft and the destruction of our way of life…
I doubt we will ever be able to stop it…but there is hope…
The conservatives led by Stephen Harper, have not been infiltrated…YET…
    We can’t let that happen…!!!!!!!!!!
Stand up for Canadian values, vote conservative…
Lets get rid of the social engineers who call themselves Liberal…!!!!!!!!
Lets get rid of the Liberal liars and theives that infest Ottawa today….
Long live truth, justice and the Stephen Harper way..
    God Bless…!!!

  15. That’s the point, “Random Name”. The same ideology that rejects Christian school prayer, embraces Islamic role playing in class.

  16. I recently read an academic articel that questioned whether a dominant and detailed secular philosophy which is being developed out of the provisions of the Constitution (not just the freedom of religion provision but also the equality provision), and whether it will in fact progressively constrict religious practice. Frankly, I find this rather true.
The removal of the Lord’s Prayer was just the start. Learning about other cultures is beneficial, but not when our children are simultaneously told that their religion should not be openly supported or practiced.

  17. Personally I don’t put much faith in prayer or religion in general. That’s just me. I believe there are healers in the world and it has nothing to do with a god. “If you can fool the mind sometimes you can fool the body”.
