Ralph Peters, in the NY Post (behind a registration wall) ;
Every one of the Army’s 10 divisions its key combat organizations has exceeded its re-enlistment goal for the year to date. Those with the most intense experience in Iraq have the best rates. The 1st Cavalry Division is at 136 percent of its target, the 3rd Infantry Division at 117 percent.
What about first-time enlistment rates, since that was the issue last spring? The Army is running at 108 percent of its needs. Guess not every young American despises his or her country and our president.
The Army Reserve is a tougher sell, given that it takes men and women away from their families and careers on short notice. Well, Reserve recruitment stands at 102 percent of requirements.
And then there’s the Army National Guard. We’ve been told for two years that the Guard was in free-fall. Really?
Guard recruitment and retention comes out to 106 percent of its requirements as of June 30.

maz2, this is my favorite post on that site:
“UNION ASKS POLITICIANS TO CUT CBC FUNDING
The Canadian Media Guild bought a full-page ad today in the Hill-Times, demanding that Parliament pull back on CBC funding. Its headline read: “Should a Crown corporation that locks out its employees continue to get its full parliamentary appropriation?” I’m unclear, personally, on how this is a good long-term strategy — should we really be putting that bug in their ear?”
LOL – proof that unions are truly run by idiots.
back on topic, Kate, it’s nice to see someone in the MSM is actually paying attention…
Perhaps the Americans should pass a law that, for second offenders of certain crime, usually perpetrated by street gangs, mandatory service be required in the military for the same duration of time the law would have otherwise put them in prison. Violent murderers, rapists, cop killers and child killers should sit in prison however, preferably in a cell where al-Queda recruiters can’t get to them.
Don’t give them a rifle or anything dangerous. Make them do all the grunt work or dirty work, like digging ditches, cleaning latrines, etc.
I’d say put the addicts in the forces too, but they can only handle so many recruits at one time.
This might also be a good idea for Canada, except first we need a military.
Not a bad idea, John C, but I have a better one – instead of dumping all those foreign aid dollars into places like Zimbabwe, etc, why don’t we send over those who can’t find honest employment or manage to keep a roof over their heads, and they could help rebuild the third world. The moonbat faction says they’re just people who need a break, and most of them have more education than the folks they’d be helping, so wouldn’t this be a marvellous opportunity for all concerned?
kakola. Why not put the criminals to work for us anyway and just keep the money we send to places like Zimbabwe? Kill two birds with one stone. The again, maybe we could just send Bono and Sean Penn. Again, two birds with one stone.
Peters had the numbers wrong, though the news is still pretty good.
Candace, regarding “UNION ASKS POLITICIANS TO CUT CBC FUNDING”:
I always go over to rabble.ca when I need to have a good laugh and cheer myself up.
It’s always great to take a peek at the odd, alternate universe the “progressives” live in.
On the subject of unions, the best one lately has been a column by one Jim Stanford extolling the virtues of free public transportation, incentives to take the bus, reduce car use and emissions, yadda, yadda, yadda…
All this would be fine BUT Jim is actually none other than an economist with – drum roll please – the Canadian Auto Workers union.
Wonder how the dues-paying union members down on the shop floor at Ford in Milton or GM in Oshawa would take to knowing they’re paying for someone who advocates a REDUCTION in automobile use?
Though I suppose if you’re a CAW worker in the Nova bus plant, increased public transportation sounds great…
Oops! I suppose the Ford plant is actually in Oakville, isn’t it?
No, John C – if we keep them here they will only find some way of multiplying. Better that they multiply over there where one has to be much more fit to survive.

Study says coffee delivers more health benefits than fruit and veg
JOHN VON RADOWITZ
COFFEE is likely to contribute far more health-giving anti- oxidants to the British diet than fruit and vegetables, new research suggests.
The evidence comes from the United States, where scientists measured the antioxidant content of more than 100 items, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, spices, oils and beverages.
Coffee emerged as easily the biggest source of antioxidants, taking account of the amount per serving and level of consumption. Black tea came second, followed by bananas, dry beans and corn.
“Americans get more of their antioxidants from coffee than any other dietary source – nothing else comes close,” said the leader of the study, Professor Joe Vinson, of Scranton University, Pennsylvania. Caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee appeared to provide similar antioxidant levels. The US findings probably reflect a similar trend in the UK, with 47 per cent of the population drinking about 70 million cups of coffee each day.
Antioxidants help to rid the body of harmful free radicals – destructive molecules that damage cells and DNA – and have been linked to a number of health benefits, including protection against heart disease and cancer.
