Different strokes for different folks, though. Don at All Things Canadian seems to think Jim Travers take is worth reading today.
If paying party workers with taxpayer dollars worked in Quebec, then why not elsewhere? In fact, way back in 2002 The Toronto Star reported that similar tactics were allegedly used coast-to-coast.
In Atlantic Canada, a fantasy federal contract is said to have paid a provincial Liberal campaign organizer. Out West, a prospective candidate’s salary was allegedly reimbursed through inflated advertising payments.
Neither case has been tested in court or heard by Gomery, who is narrowly focused on Quebec. And it’s also true there is little incentive to break what until now has been a circle of silence protected with all the ferocity of junkyard dogs.
Will Brault’s surprisingly candid revelations finally expose all that noise as just the yapping of those with much to hide?

Good junkyard dogs don’t bark. They don’t act ferociously. A professionally trained junkyard dog remains sleeping in the sun while you approach his compound. He snaps at a buzzing fly in response to that stick you’re running against the fence. When the wirecutters come out, he sits up, sends you a direct gaze …. and scratches an itchy ear with hind leg.

Kate: I would call the dog you described a trained guard dog or protection dog. Most people think of junk yard dogs as those mangy half-shepherd mixes that live in junk yards and bark incessently.
When I lived in downtown Toronto I often cycled out to the Leslie Spit. The route would take me through and old warehouse district (now becoming rapidly gentrified) which had a large auto salvage yard. The yard had two dogs.
One a white german shepher mix and the other looked like some sort of rottweiler cross. Both would bark furiously as I rode by.

I told him that in the future, he should simply ask, and that if he might remember that the internet doesn’t necessarily follow his rules. Becoming the number one google hit for “Sheepf***stain” might not be what he wants to wake up to.
It’s good advice for anyone, actually. Test your skin thickness before you engage in flamewars.

Kate’s description of a REAL junk yard dog is absolutely correct. Some years ago, I was repairing telephone equipment in a junk yard and was (accidentally?) locked in by the employees at 5 pm. Being a dog lover, I had occasionally petted the 2 scruffy dogs which lay in the shade while I was working. When I realized that the employees had gone home without telling me, I nonchalantly walked towards the gate to open it and leave. I was very fortunate that I left my truck door open becaue I managed to get back inside before the dogs reached me. There was not a single bark. They didn’t need to bark, believe me. I have never been more scared of anything in my life. And the instant the owner returned and opened the gate, they reverted to their previous behavior, wagging their tails and ignoring me totally.
Of course dogs can be trained to bark or not. But a REAL junk yard dog will attack you without any warning at all – as Kate says – the instant you cross that invisible line.
(And to make this more relevant to Adscam, I think junk yard dog is a pretty good description of Jean Chreten too!)

This is a lie. Kate can explain her censorship policies to the public. She can explain which right wing views she will publish and which views she will censor and suppress. For example, criticizing American Foreign Policy or their President is off limits. Criticizing Stephen Harper or his policies is off limits.
Lying about Warren Kinsella is OK. Criticizing Ralph Klein or MIke Harris is not allowed. Bashing the Premier of Ontario is just fine.

Joe, I appreciate that you did not start calling names and indulging in perjorative invective. Naturally, I profoundly disagree with you. Last election cycle we had two other old VietNam buddies in our living room. One, a Republican candidate for sheriff and the other a Republican candidate for county commissioner. The latter was a former Marine recon whose son just got back from Iraq as a forward observer in the Marine Corps. He did a lot of cross training with Navy Seals, which interested me for my own reasons.
Now my dog story. I agree with Kate. We are also dog lovers and have rescued a number of dogs. We work with a no-kill shelter called Friends for Animals.
So a long time ago, a guy I knew was aware of the fact that I like dogs and started encouraging me to try to pet a dog that he knew about on the other side of a cyclone fence. I could tell something was fishy, but hadn’t sufficient canine experience at the time. I looked at the dog and he smiled up at me with his tail wagging. I tentatively and slowly started putting my hand over the fence, saying, “good dog! what a good boy.” The dog wagged his tail more vigorously, looking up at me with bright, friendly eyes. My hand got closer, his tail wagged ferociously, he looked up at me with encouragement.
The dog came off the ground with fangs bared, ready to rip my tricep off. I just barely managed to get my arm out of the way before the dog’s jaws clamped together with a force that would have severed a 2 by 4.
I looked at the dog with some alarm, and the dog looked back at me with a slightly disappointed, but otherwise contented look. The dog was an optimist. There would always be a next time.
