Via email: Frustrated and Disenfranchised Ontario Voter Looks to Relocate; Considers Saskatchewan

Do you have any suggestions as to where a 52-year-old disgusted former liberal can go in Sask. to benefit from your 3.4% unemployment rate (well over 7% and climbing here in On-scare-io) to find work WITHOUT having to fork over nearly $2K of my annual income for a proposed pension plan that I won’t see a penny of (because I’m too old)?
What are the property values at? There seems to be a wide range across the board. Can I afford to buy my own home out there? My townhome in Ottawa is assessed at $240K, and I have 100% equity. I don’t owe a damn penny on the place. I need to sell my property before the Wynne socialists “lie-berals” take it away from me, like they’ve done to those poor rural bastards with their blasted giant fans (If they haven’t made them sick first).
BTW… Love your site, and your SDA blog. The blog gives me some reassurance that I’m not the only one remaining in Canada that can still think with his brain.

Your advice and suggestions are welcome in the comments.

  1. For a good part of the history of Canada, the calling has been “Go West Young Man….Go West”. At 52 you are still young so come on out and enjoy!!!!!

  2. “…Former Liberal…” I really want to say, “suck it up and enjoy what you voted for – Reap what you sowed!” But if you do move out west to get away from what you created, leave the Liberal crap behind.

  3. People who voted Liberal in the 90’s are many of the same folks who vote Conservative in the teens.
The people haven’t necessarily changed much, but modern Liberalism has.
As per the Ottawa guy…if you are used to Ottawa amenities you should consider heading to Alberta. Live in or near Calgary. You should be able to get a nice place for $240K if you don’t live downtown.

  4. Keeping Chris’s caution in mind, I would suggest relocating to a small town within commuting distance of either Saskatoon or Regina. We do not know what your employment skills are but there may also be employment opportunities in some of the smaller cities like Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Lloydminster, Yorkton, and others. Purchasing a home outside of Saskatoon or Regina will allow you to make the most of your dollar amount.

  5. I haven’t voted liberal since before 1993. I’m hoping after more than 20 years, I can be forgiven for my past sins.
To clarify my point, I had NEVER EVER voted for McGuilty… even though he was my riding’s MPP. After more than 12 years of this, can you now understand why I want to leave?

  6. No. Ontario needs former Liberals to stay put and spend the rest of their lives suffering the mess they made of their province and working on putting it right.

  7. Mr. Disgrunted:
Have a look at what the locals are actually paying for the work you’d like to do. Look at what’s available in kijiji for housing / jobs… and sell while you still can.

  8. If you are not a member of the party become one. Attend every meeting and other activity of the riding association and never shut up about what is wrong with the party, how it has ruined the province, and how Liberals must stamp out the corruption in their own ranks and reverse the decline of the province by promoting a culture of individual liberty and personal responsibility and destroy the nanny state. You are 52? You have lived longer than you are going to live. You may be dead in only a few years. Or days. Do some good with the time you have left.

  9. No offence sir but I moved here from socialist manitoba in 2001 I realized I needed to change my scenery, when I moved to Alberta I shortly realized I needed to change my politics as well, unless you will vote FOR the wild rose out in Alberta(if you come out here). I kinda agree with tooner.
Stay where you are and wallow in the shit mess you helped create.
We have enough traitors in Alberta so much so that it Has changed our politics and we have had 2 socialist premiers in a row 2 times they have been kicked out. If another one gets in that will be the dalton death blow to Alberta it will show that we are officially circling the bowl as a province. Next election it’s wild rose or nothing!!
Note,I never voted in manitoba politics. The first time I voted in my life was FOR Ralph , and for Harper. Bin that was since.

  10. Well Mr Disgruntled, perhaps I’ll share a big U-Haul with you 😉
Look at http://www.saskjobs.ca/ to see what may interest you and then check out http://www.mls.ca for housing options.
Saskatchewan has it’s charms but do not rule out Alberta. Where else in the world can you do the boreal forest, the bald a$$ prairie, the badlands and the mountains in a SINGLE day?

  11. Stay where you are. Live with what you created. For years you probably sneered at the rest of Canada like a typical Ontario buffoon and now we laugh at you fool. Stay put and enjoy your socialist paradise.

  12. If you can weld you can have a job tomorrow here in the iron tri-angle of Saskatchewan. (Humboldt, St Brieux, Annaheim, Engefeld, St. Gregor ) If not, there are still plenty of supporting jobs in the area. An average small town house would set you back $150-$200 Gs. Good schools, friendly neighbours, great fishing and hunting. What are you waiting for?

  13. Here’s what I said on June 7th…
“As an immigrant to Canada, Ontario, and damn grateful… I’ve made a decision in my life. At 16 (she’s 5 now) my daughter and my wife will go to Saskatchewan. Spend 1 week. See what the Canada I came to has to offer. This will be the best investment made since my family came here.
Our kids have a fear of straying too far. In a global economy there’s no such thing. I want my daughter to have the best, as I’ve had. She just has to focus on the opportunity.
    Kids go to Sask.”
You can go for a week (or 2) vacation and learn something at the same time. Go with your young adult, show them some ropes, boots on the ground.

  14. I moved in mid February from Calgary because it is becoming “too liberal”. I purchased a 980 sq.ft. duplex for $ 240,000 and am completing a $ 60,000 reno – as I am installing a basement apartment. Everyone in Regina is employed if they want to be – lots of work in construction, retail, I agree check out Kijiji ads. It is great to see people happy and working – very happy with my move so far – very friendly neighbours.

  15. As Conservatives we are the big tent party. People learn, grow and adapt.
    Conservatives need to welcome all.
Comments and attitude like Jame’s are of little help.
Liberal or Conservative, there’s idiots in all parties.
I see a bitter old curmudgeon, muttering alone in the corner, in Jame’s future

  16. “…Liberal or Conservative, there’s idiots in all parties…”
And all parties need those who have seen the error of their ways to make up for it. Running away and leaving the solving of problems to someone else (e.g. “the government” funded by “the rich”) is what went wrong in Ontario and what a lot of people running away from it will bring to the West. We grow enough people like that here already.
I see another Ontario, here, in our future. It doesn’t need even a little help from you.

  17. FYI Frustrated. House prices in Calgary average over $400G so you may want to look for another centre if you don’t wish to incur debt.
However, I left Ontario in 1989 and won’t tell you to stay in Ontario to wallow in the stupid.
Folks, the media is the enemy not the people they lie to. It is a bigoted and biased media that keeps the Liberals propped up with their continuous attacks on liberty minded people. It’s why we have Mayor Nensharia here in Calgary. The greasy slob has never been asked by the incompetent, lying, hacktivists in the ememedia about his support for Sharia. I have, and was told he believes in the will of the people. Consider that he runs around begging Muslims to come here, we have already radicalized terrorists here in Calgary, and he supports the segregation of girls in Muslim schools. If enough Muslims come to Calgary Nensharia will support Sharia as it will be the people’s will.
I am not aware of any journalist asking his views on the topic. Cowardly enemies.
Ontario sucks so come on out to Sasks/AB and make a life for yourself. Remember to leave the PROG level stupid behind, it’s why you want to leave in the first place.

  18. I don’t know how long it has been since you have been to Calgary but I am wondering what you think that he would be able to get for 240K? My grandson bought a house 3 years ago in one of the burbs and it cost 350K! My small villa is selling for close to 500K, I live on the south end of the city.If you think that you can get anywhere near downtown for 250K I would like to see what it is. Maybe one of the houses on the flood plain that has seen many floods.

  19. I moved from Ottawa to Calgary in 2002.
My family members continue to vote for liberals and I keep encouraging them to do so. The biggest problem I have these days is finding people to work for me. Having the libs in charge in Ontario creates a flow of workers coming west which is a benefit for me.

  20. Move to Vancouver instead, housing is cheap and you’ll be surrounded by fellow Liberals,Greens, and NIMBY’s like you’ve never experienced before.
And if you can manage to catch of of those gub’mint jobs, you’ll be set for life.
Mayor Gregor will make you feel completely at home.

  21. ‘…a 52-year-old disgusted former liberal …”
    Dear Disgruntled,
Call up your buddy The Dildo down in Harvard – he’s the one that owes you, not me.

  22. Darn…and I forgot to add that we need to get out before horse face institutes a brand new “Ontario Exit Tax.”

  23. Disgruntled, Moose Jaw welcomes you! Close to Regina and Saskatoon(but not TOO close ;p). Housing prices won’t bury you in debt. Cost of living is reasonable. It’s really just a big small town. Bring your skills and set up shop.

  24. WITHOUT having to fork over nearly $2K of my annual income for a proposed pension plan that I won’t see a penny of (because I’m too old)
Well there’s that, plus the fact that you’ll be handing your hard-earned money over to a scam artist who has pizzed away billions of your tax dollars in ill thought out schemes that even a dolt would balk at.
So what could possibly go wrong with handing over even more of your money to that big-nosed woman?

  25. Nope. Former liberals created the problem. They want to escape the pain they’ve created, and will undoubtedly vote for more of the same in the new host they choose to infect.

  26. I’ve looked at some of the comments here, and I must say… OUCH!
Folks… There’s not a progressive bone in my body. I voted liberal more than 25 years ago while living in Quebec, where the only alternative provincially to voting liberal was voting PQ.
Since I moved to Ontario in 1995 (Finally having to come to the realization that I was no longer welcome in Quebec because of my Anglo heritage), I must say that I had NEVER VOTED LIBERAL while being here. So I will plead “NOT GUILTY” for contributing to the destruction of this province or this country. I was, and still am, a bystander, who just wants to live his life in peace, and contribute positively to society.
I was what you would call today a “Classic Liberal”. I’ve always believed in individual rights and freedoms, and I also believe that with those rights comes accountability and responsibility. I’ve always been independent. What has happened, to paraphrase Ronald Reagan, is that I didn’t leave the Liberal party, the Liberal Party left me!
Even now, I work as a consultant in computer programming. I never worked a government job in my life. I never had a pension other than contributing to the CPP. I don’t have any perks. Don’t have paid vacations, no statutory holidays or sick days, and I NEVER EVER JOINED A UNION! In short, if I don’t work, I don’t get paid, which is the way it should be.
And I will make one more comment: I considered moving to Calgary a while ago, but not while that clown Nemshee is in charge. I’ve had enough of lefty-liberal mayors like Chiarelli, and Watson here in Ottawa. I hope Calgarians wise up soon enough, then maybe, just maybe I’ll take a second look… If I can afford it.

  27. I think this thread is very illuminating, and timely. Depending on the vote on Thursday, I may be looking to relocate as well. Now if I can only get the GF to move as well.

  28. Disgruntled Ontario Voter:
You never voted for McGuinty but, assuming you voted for Peterson you’re guilty of helping to install the corrupt political machine citizens of Ontario now enjoy (they must as so many of them, per the latest polls, still will vote Liberal).
Ontario likely will not change. Major urban areas like the GTA are infested with 3rd world immigrants (bravo Mr. Federal Government!) who reflexively vote Liberal. As bad as it is this immigrant population has never had it better considering the corrupt hell holes they originate from.
The Unions are running amok and will always support the left. No relief in sight I’m afraid.
Ontario, a second Greece in the making.
Run, run away as fast as you can.

  29. Come to Alberta, come to Saskatchewan, whatever. But avoid the big cities. Life is better in the smaller centres, and in rural areas. And we need to increase the rural population in order to increase, or maintain even, our rural representation in the legislatures.
The liberal/conservative divide in Canada is, in large part, an urban/rural divide too. Large cities tend to vote more to the left than do small towns.

  30. “Major urban areas like the GTA are infested with 3rd world immigrants (bravo Mr. Federal Government!) who reflexively vote Liberal.”
    1. “In the past, Toronto had often supported the Progressive Conservative party, and in the 2011 federal election, Torontonians sent nine Conservative MPs to Ottawa, eight NDP MPs and six Liberal MPs.” (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_of_Toronto)
    2. “The Liberals suffered a stunning collapse in the area around the City of Toronto in Monday night’s federal election, losing all but one of their seats in the 905 region to the Conservatives.” May 03, 2011 (www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/tory-wave-sweeps-905-area-outside-toronto-1.1058641)
Do these sound like reflexive voting for Liberals?
Is the mayor of Toronto a Liberal?

  31. Compare that to the provincial numbers for the last few elections. And the only reason Ford was elected was because of the boroughs outside of the Toronto core.

  32. $240k in Calgary? Mobile home with as much refinishing as you’d like to do to it. 240 will get you nothing and I live in a poorer section of the NE (but I repeat myself).

  33. Come on over, but please oh please make sure you have cleansed your soul of any liberal ideas that may be lingering. The very last thing we need out west is more liberal locusts coming here and trying to recreate the socialist “paradise” they have created in the East. It’s bad enough now that we have PC’s like Redford buying union votes and expecting anyone to think she is anything but a liberal.
I expect a significant amount of the vote she got was from transplanted Easterners that were drawn like moth’s to her flame of promised increased gov spending here and there and everywhere.
I welcome anyone and everyone to the west that seeks to better themselves through hard work…not at the financial foot of government.

  34. “And all parties need those who have seen the error of their ways to make up for it. Running away and leaving the solving of problems to someone else (e.g. “the government” funded by “the rich”) is what went wrong in Ontario and what a lot of people running away from it will bring to the West. We grow enough people like that here already.
I see another Ontario, here, in our future. It doesn’t need even a little help from you.”

If not for us Conservative voters here in Ontario, people like you would be saying “Prime Minister Ignatieff” today.

  35. I would suggest you take your life savings and invest it in fuel and motels for a vacation by car or pickup truck (best) , (no smart car)to visit the west, starting with many of the places mentioned in Sask, Alberta and Northern BC. Go in late August to end of Sept and no later, as being from Ottawa you have no idea what real winter means. Get a feel for life out West and the opportunities that present themselves. Whatever you do, lie through your teeth and don’t tell anyone you’re from Ottawa as that is a huge negative for potential employers that don’t want to hire another useless drone. You may not be one but the visuals are automatic. Tell them you’re from Timmins or somewhere far north. Forget that you’re a computer consultant and be open to anything. Many jobs offer training at no cost to you and at 52 you are young enough for anything. OK, not male stripper. By the time you retire the new age will be 70 or higher anyway. Go for it, what have you got to lose ?

  36. “I don’t know how long it has been since you have been to Calgary but I am wondering what you think that he would be able to get for 240K?” from Eliza
    Here’s the original comment:
“Do you have any suggestions as to where a 52-year-old disgusted former liberal can go in Sask. ” (my emphasis added) Geography isn’t my strongest subject, but I wasn’t aware that Calgary had relocated to SK.
meanwhile, there are many here calling our Ontario friend a ‘buffoon’, or advising him “Stay where you are and wallow in the shit mess you helped create.” without knowing the first thing about his political views or activities.
So, from my point of view, there are many you in Alberta who 1) can’t read, 2) jump to conclusions without knowing the facts, and 3) conveniently forget that self-reliant, nose-to-the-grindstone Alberta is the ONLY province in Canada’s history to default on its debt.
So, DOV, I hope you find what you’re looking for from the decent people who took the time to read your request, understand it, and respond without indulging in unfair speculation and calumny. There’s a bunch of them here, and I appreciate what they post. The others can take a long walk on a short pier.

  37. … I hope Calgarians wise up soon enough, then maybe, just maybe I’ll take a second look… If I can afford it…
As one who has lived since 1976 in Calgary (barring 3 yrs of temporary insanity in Barrie 08-10)… could not agree more. This clown has AGENDA 21 written all over his purple lips. Progressive wingnut.
Don’ listen to close to those screaming for you to leave your liberal ideas in the East…moving to a rural part of the West will in 2 years time cure you of ANY liberal thinking.
Come on out, we need professionals in all trades and occupations. but word to the wise…no one out here hires if you are still living in Ontario…best bet is to be here. Good living, clean air little to no Union stupidity although we have teachers too..in Unions. And just like an Ontario Liberal, REDFRAUD bought her way into the premiers seat by promising to fund pension liabilities and then later, reneging. However the next election should cleanse the legislature in a big Way.!!
Barring stupidity, Wild Rose should win the next election..in Alberta its time for the PC’s to sit in opposition.
As for Ontario..it is lost as far as I am concerned..and will end up just like Detroit. No work – No business – no money.

  38. Good for you. Now dig in and fight harder. If it weren’t for you Conservatives in Ontario you would have come up with better candidates and better campaigns and beaten the Liberals.

  39. Don’t move to Calgary. It’s going “Detroit” faster than Detroit did.

  40. It’s 300k+ even in small towns/cities like Grande Cache and Grande Prairie. And that’s a good bit further north than the major cities.

  41. I just had a great idea! You know how if you bring pets or plants or whatever to another part of the world, and they have to go into quarantine for a while to make sure they are free of disease, etc.?
Why don’t we take anyone who wants to come from Ontario, and put them in quarantine for a while to make sure they don’t have any lingering leftist tendencies? Quarantine could take the form of tree-planting, ditch digging, or really any honest work.
Am I all wet on this?

  42. I always tell people if your in hell get out.
Saskatchewan is just beginning it economic march with the many finds in oil has started a run. In some ways its more varied in employment than Alberta.
I think the suggestions of moving to a smaller community is a sound one.
After this last heart attack I’m considering it myself.
    Red Deer has possibilities.
As for Politics , I’m not to worried about that. You find out real quick how Saskatchewan went through socialist hell already. As we found out with the Red-faced & her Ukrainian Bolshevik before her. From 0 debt to 23 billion by these thieves.
They have created another political elite here where we never had one before.23 billion making this a reality is the legacy of trying to destroy our culture as the Communists now running Ontario have. The Unions are vultures , but our dislike for them is palatable.
As for Calgary its now a Muslim enclave. Red cowboys who now herd camels run it. King Ralph’s shade who was a classical Liberal that has probably left here.
Edmonton has 4000 people coming in the city a month here. Housing is almost impossible to find. Though our last Mayor did a lot for the down-town.
Saskatchewan is the future. Alberta has lost its way.Its elite has become no better than the Toronto swamp of socialists.
I say that as a life long Albertan.Though we do have some hope having kicked out 2 of the pretenders so far. Both Provinces are probably the only place left in North America where you can make 100,000 a years with a grade nine education.

  43. I feel your pain – went through the same process in 1993 under Bob Rae’s NDP Ontario with unemployment at 12%. Applied for and got a job transfer to the Atlanta HQ of a big red cola company and LOOOOVED conservative, low tax, ‘concealed carry’ life in Dixie. Stayed long enough to get U.S. citizenship, but came back to Ontario in 2005 for family reasons (elderly, unwell parents). Now with Obungler in the U.S. and Lieberal thieves in Ontario, I’m a man with 2 passports but nowhere I really WANT to be. Ontarians moving west will have the same effect as Democrats moving south from NY, IL, PA and MA … they say they fled high taxes up north but vote for the same thieving leftist moronic policies in their new locations. We really DO need a revolution with leftist heads on pikes …SERIOUSLY, we DO.

  44. This will be my final comment on this thread, (Yes, I’m the guy who started it)
I’m encouraged by some of the suggestions. I’m very interested in relocating in a smaller community, provided I can find work… any kind of work… to support myself.
Quarantine? I’ll do it. Anything to get out of here!
I know how Redford came to power. She was smuggled into the PC leadership by her union cronies. I’d NEVER have vote for her despite the “conservative” moniker. I’m not fooled. She’s no conservative. Not by a long shot. Just thinking about the palace she had planned, and that was enough to force her to resign. Oh, I’ll bet Wynne is grateful she isn’t premier of Alberta.
I’ve been lied to by enough liberals to know when they’re lying, and Redford is a very good example of that. The fact that liberals lie so often, and with such impunity, not only the pols, but the journos too, is the reason I’ve become fed up with the entire progressive movement. (I hesitate to call myself a converted conservative, because I suspect there are still skeptics out there that still doubt that I’ve shed all my liberal thoughts and inclinations)
I’m a “climate denier”. Have been WELL BEFORE Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth” in 2006. Been skeptical of the entire “science” since the 90’s.
I’m pro tar sands. If it wasn’t for that revenue, Canada would never have come through the last recession the way that it did. Canadians all over the country owe a huge ‘thank-you’ to Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Does anybody care to guess what my position on abortion is? Does any body have any other questions as to where my leanings are? I want to get out of Ontario not because I created this mess (I didn’t — “NEVER VOTED LIBERAL” in Ontario means I DID’T VOTE FOR PETERSON EITHER), but because I don’t want to live in this mess anymore. I thought I could change it, but the stupidity is just too much to bear. Now this government is going to dig deeper into my pocket with this new pension plan scheme, and that’s just about the last straw.
Thanks for all the suggestions and comments. There was one commenter who provided a link to a Saskatchewan jobs site. Thanks for that. I’ll follow up on that as soon as I can.

  45. There is a company that is crying for employees in Calgary. They hire them and then they get poached to the huge paycheques of the oil patch. The company will even give you the plane ticket out!
That said, the biggest portion of this national company’s income is generated out west. Their head office is in the GTA. I wonder for how much longer….
