There is no question in her case that she presided over a biased and hostile to Conservatives machine. When people say that they don’t want the Government to gain access to their private conversations, it’s because of people like Lerner. Do you want a hostile to have access to your personal information?

I worked in government for a number of years. I was absolutly immune to politics…when MPs called me to ask for details of investigations I routinely told them to piss off; that they were not entitled to such information, regardless of which party they were affilated with. I took the same approach when appearing before Parliamentary committees; it really ticked off some of the MPs when I challenged them that their questions were impertinent, but they apparently learned to live with my attitude. And all of my counterparts apparently had the same attitude.
When on earth did all of this partisan politics, which is clearly evident in all sectors of US government, intrude itself, and how do the powers that be get it out?
Lerner is the quintessential definition of a “progressive” Liberal.
They are parasites, living off the fat of the land, their moral compass is dictated by the letter of the Laws of the Land or through Utopian thinking. They learn, through the hallowed halls of academia, they hone through working in the “public sector”, and then actualize their ingrained and finely-sculpted skills to go after those who trying to tear down their constructed ideas and attempts at building a kinder and gentler society.
They hide behind the laws of the land to justify their meddling and intrusive behavior.
Lerner and her staff used the Laws of the Land to intimidate, harass and bully those who were not buying into the schemes of the think-tanks and committees, attempting to subjugate any who were non-compliant and hostile to the “grand plan”. She and her office demanded full disclosure and transparency but are now hiding behind the skirt of the Constitution to circumvent those same principles.
That is why Conservatives, Republicans and Libertarians stand is such complete contempt of these ideologues.
Lerner did not “take the fifth”, she simply said that she would not answer questions. She did not mention the fifth. But she can not be accused of refusing to answer questions because none were asked. She never needed to take the fifth. Issa, clown that he is, told her she could go and she went, with her legal team. No one asked the questions. Issa may be older than he looks, but he cannot hide the age of his brain.
If Lerner is recalled she can start from scratch and make the House committee look like idiots.
Administrative “careerists” are a large part of the problem of government overreach/oppression we see blooming in this decade. Lerner is typical of the type of partisan activist/asskisser who rises in big government administrative ranks – although most lower level civil servants are hard working people just trying to feed a family, their careerist bosses, who use the administration’s privilege/power to actuate partisan policy pogroms, are remorseless sociopathic martinets who should never be allowed near any kind of authority. Fascist Germany was full of them, China is full of them, soviet Russia was permeated with them – until the soviet system fell and they migrated in the UN and UN NGOs – now the EU and US Fed system are full of them.

You might have challenged politicans who wanted to access info they had no right to but on the whole my impression is that doesn’t happen enough. Bottom line is that there does not appear to be any serious deterrent faced by bureacrats or politicans for their actions. Usually a ‘I am sorry’ does the trick and everyone moves on to the next sound bite.
Since few people actually go to church anymore the ethics of life taught from the pulpit are disappearing. Universities started giving ethics as course material but like most academia there is no bottom line.
Call ‘Godwin’s Law’ on me, but the Nazis at Auschwitz didn’t break the law either, Ms Lerner. What is legal, or not specifically deemed illegal, may not be right, ethical, moral or fair. One can do wrong without breaking the law.
While Ms. Lerner did not say ‘fifth amendment’ she did state.
“I have not done anything wrong, I have not broken any laws, I have not violated any IRS rules or regulations and I have not provided false information to this or any other congressional committee,” Lerner told House Oversight and Government Reform Committee members. “While I would very much like to answer the committee’s questions today, I have been advised by my counsel to assert MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT not to testify or answer questions related to the subject manner of this hearing.” (CAPS added by me)
The only right listed in the Bill of Rights regarding testimony is the 5th. It only applies to criminal cases so Ms Lerner, her lawyer and every law maker who accepted her statement obviously does not understand the plain English of the 5th amendment.

Bruce, you asked when partisan politics became so intrusive in all sectors of government. Glacierman and Occam discuss this and I might add that I believe this started incrementally after WW II. In the late 1950s, a teacher friend, now retired and a teacher step-brother, now deceased, both experienced self-admitted communists in their classes during their teacher training. When asked why they were there, they replied to teach the children. This must have been happening all over North America, and we see the results in our educational system from top to bottom and in our government bureaucracy. I still say Stalin’s boy did a great job on infiltrating our society with their Marxist ideology. Gouzenko just exposed the tip of the iceberg.
