So here’s what concerns me: how was Maher able to contact these individual donors – indeed voters – when the only information Elections Canada publicly provides is the postal code?
Update: Excellent points in the comments – if you insist on holding the questioner to a higher standard than the reporter.
From the same story, it states that Elections Canada provides the person’s name, city, province, and postal code of each donor. One just has to pick up a phonebook to get the number to call. I don’t get it? Am I missing something obvious here.
Name + postal code + google = phone number. Or he had a phone book and just called everybody with the same name.
Except unlisted numbers, of course. That might take a bit of doing. Maybe Maher has a “backwards book”, they aren’t impossible to get.
Or, there might be a helpful elf in Elections Canada. Just because a competent individual could get this done the hard way doesn’t prove some Liberal didn’t send an email.
If we don’t clean up the lib-left corruption in the electoral process and the media (and I mean sue them every time they are caught) we will end up with a clusterfrig like we saw in the US the past 15 years. Is Elections Canada as clean and unbiased as the media claims it is???
Um, Canada411.com? Not hard to find numbers of people in Quebec unless they’re named Guy Tremblay or Luc Leduc. A bunch of guys with Italian names are probably easy to find, and you can always ask, “are you the Rocco Ravioli at 123 Palermo Lane who owns Rocco’s Plastering?”
These people lied to Maher. I wonder why?

If you believe that you have any privacy in this country, once you are issued numbers regulated by the government,your belief is a grievous error in your thinking.
Though they may try to convince you otherwise, the regulators of these numbers can include:
– people who may not give a damn about your privacy
– people who may have achieved their position of employment through means which do not include their ability to do the job as required
– people who may gain financially in the “redistribution” of your information.
In my experience this is not conspiracy-theory, tin-foil hat, big brother delusion…I have acknowledged this as a fact of life since I was issued a SIN 40 years ago!
Folks with media credentials have access to rather sophisticated tracking systems. But in this case, with the info publicly available from Elections Canada, an inanimate carbon rod could obtain those phone numbers. No conspiracy here.
Wouldn’t he have checked with the Tories to see if they had some comment on this item before publishing in the first place?
Like others have said… With a name and a postal code, you can pretty much find anyone. This sounds like yelling in an echo chamber. No story here, so let’s invent one, just like Maher?
Didn’t Ian Brodie point out that with the public EC info you could create a contact list without using the CPC data and therefore that terrifying robocalls that steal elections didn’t have to come from CPC headquarters. Hasn’t Maher just shown that possibility to be correct?
The downside of public disclosure of donors. It doesn’t please the Liberal bribe solicitors in Quebec. It’s pretty hard to get a public works contract in Quebec even though you’ve paid the requisite bribe when you have donated to the Conservatives. That’s why the denial. The place is not only illiterate and lazy but stiflingly corrupt.

Lets see… When election donation regulations were changed, all three major parties admitted to initial errors due to confusion on the regulations.
Elections Canada showed up at Conservative Party headquarters with a SWAT team and reporters in tow.
Liberals and NDP…no investigation.
Elections Canada is just one more leftist fiefdom stuffed full of Liberal apparatchiks.

Did you guys happen to notice the names of the voters who “forgot” about their contributions? They’re all “construction entrepreneurs” with names like “Joey” and “Rocco”. I’m not making this up. I think that Mr. Maher should really give some consideration of the source when throwing around accusations like this.
The problem is that the “questioner” shows no more intelligence than the so called “reporter”.
