Wayne And Winnie Gretzky

I’m going to spare his identity, because he’s generally a pretty good guy – but one of our local radio hosts just compared the alleged involvement of the Gretzkys in the “Operation Slapshot” gambling scandal to Nelson and Winnie Mandela.
It’s so freaking bizarre, I still can’t stop laughing.
Only in Canada.

  1. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire where “Wayne & Winnie” are concerned.. We will just have to wait & see how far the “scandal” goes.

  2. You know, people around here expect 10 posts a day and accurate punctuation, too.
Perhaps it’s time to go dark for a few days to remind you folks who does the work here.

  3. I was just being silly Kate. No offense meant…I shoulda put a smiley behind my comment.
And if you wanted to take a break…we could accept 8 or 9 posts a day instead of the required 10. 🙂 Considering visits to SDA are like a drug habit for many of us…maybe the government should provide us with free “SDA fix” injection sites.

  4. Kate!
    No, please don’t, I couldn’t handle the withdrawal… 😉
(See my post on previous thread)

  5. We just have too damn little real intrigue to occupy our MSM…pretty much all of the criminal doings in this nation are concentrated in sitting Liberal political cartels…then they are staring off into space as a gangster liberal cartel robs us blind for a decade or so….now this primary public threat has heen removed, and to make us feel they’re still the watch dogs of the public, we see bizzare sensationalist cultural anthropology about our sports icons or the manufaturing of nebulous windigos in cyber space who threaten the Trudeaupian state by having dissenting opinion.
Just to damn little to do up here….don’t know what’s more potentially dangerous a large standing army out out of work or a media with no demons to slay?

  6. Shabbadoo:
“SDA injection sites”? Impossible. They don’t have a source of the necessary euphoriate, there being only one…

  7. Please Kate! don’t listen to them they know not what they say!I too have become a Blunkie and find that the MSM is like Methadone. We need the good stuff!

  8. Agreed, the Winnie Mandela angle is very silly.
However, I’ve been honestly wondering why this is such a big story. Can we not bet on just about anything via any number of websites?
Granted sports is scared of fixing allegations, but that is a NHL issue to deal with, and there was apparently no betting on hockey here. Is being a bookie even illegal in Canada? If it is, why? Most Canadian provinces are in the gambling business. In the USA it may be illegal in states other than Nevada, however, you can easily place sports bets via on-line Vegas sites so the law seems outdated.
Seems to me this is more a case of “not a great idea for an NHL coach” rather than any real wrong doing or harm. So what if Mrs. Gretzky places wagers on sports events? Yawn. So does just about everybody else at sometime or other.

  9. Kate: It was me you are writing about, but I appreciate you not naming me. That’s what I get when I try to think on my feet and come up with another example of how one can be affected by so-called guilt-by-association.
As for some others, punctuation seems to be a really big deal!

  10. It must be nice to work in a punctuation free environment… glad you took my poke at you in the spirit in which it was intended. The think on the feet thing catches everyone sooner or later!

  11. Radio people will think of anything to be funny and unique, to outdo each other. One radio guy here in Calgary (I will spare his identity as well) stated that throughout history, whoever Wayne Greyzky is involved with, they will be in financial trouble. Alan Eagleson, Peter Pocklington, Bruce Mcnall, and now this..
    Hmmm..

  12. When you consider the demographic that “news release” is focused at has limited understanding of western law and its institutions…and that any “understanding” they do have comes from the narrow manipulative clannish ethnic lobbies like the CIC…this is first rate propaganda copy…Heir Goebbels would be proud of this effort. Great inflamatory misdirection with good potential for inciting mob-think in the focal community.
We note the wording in this 5th columnist agitiation piece was carefully scripted to gain maximum fear and loathing in the target audience while escaping the wrath of the “hate laws”, which I’m sure this lobby plays like a stradivarius.
These people are dangerous nutters and certainly function in a self imposed vacuum apart from mainstream Canada.
I personally I’m thankful that fanatic seditious agitators like Elmasry are closely watched by CSIS and the info is shared with the FBI and interpol.

  13. Very interesting angle Asian Wild Rose. I never thought of that. Perhaps this could spell the return of Jets hockey. The people of Phoenix, simply could not care less about the Coyotes.
“So does just about everybody else at sometime or other.”
I think thousands of bets and 1.7 mill in wagers is a little heavier than the average person betting on the Superbowl. When do we hear the words “organized crime”? Or was it an “NHL players-only” exclusive?
“Can we not bet on just about anything via any number of websites?”
Were the words “website” or “company” or “investment” uttered yet? No, just “Gambling-ring”. I hope I’m wrong and all this just goes away.

  14. So, now Canadians are going to get wrapped up in the lives and foibles of celebs? You guys sure you ain’t from Down Here?
What are the rules regarding gambling by NHL Coaches? Or by NHL wives?
Do we behead them now? Or wait until the MSM has found them guilty?

  15. Not really a story of any worth because the wealthy never face any real penalty for cheating people out of their funds.
It would be a story with real and severe penalties if you and I were involved.
Just consider OJ, Conrad Black, Chretien, Goodale,Martin and hundreds of inside traders. TG

  16. Meanness and bitchiness dept: what’s wrong with betting
on any sport, including the sport they play? If the Toronto Maple Leaf players had bet on the other team in the playoffs all these years they’d be richer than Harold Ballard.
I realize this comment is unworthy of SDA, but I just bottled my Merlot and am not responsible for this post. (Gretzkys/ Mandelas?! Wish we received that radio stn in B.C.)

  17. … at the divorce hearing, Winnie wanted half of everything Nelson had so the judge gave her 13 1/2 years in prison …

  19. Tony guitar — you are right.
Kado — you are sometimes wrong.
Let’s just say, depending on the jurisdiction, chances are way higher in the U.S. that someone will get a sentence closer to what they deserve. Sentences in Canada are a joke.

  20. Placing a bet with ‘the mob’, just means that you didn’t do it through a governmint betting agency-shame on you! Uhhhhhh- which ‘mob’ are we talking about, here? (Since it isn’t the GOVERNMENT MOB).

  21. Reportedly the Scarfo mob out of Philly. Pere Nicky was a blood thirsty killer whom I think is doing a life stretch now. There was a great piece on A&E American Justice a while back on the Scarfo family. Not a bunch anyone with a brain would want to get mixed up with.

  23. Yup, reports just coming out now from New Jersey. Gretzky’s wife placed $500,000 on NFL bets in the last 6 weeks including $75,000 on the Super Bowl itself. There is expected to be a press conference in Phoenix within the hour with Wayne announcing he will not accompany the Canadian team to Torino and possibly step down as head coach of the Coyotes.

  24. If all Janet Jones/Gretzky did was place some bets she should not be in any trouble (assuming she reported any winnings to IRS). But if she participated in recruiting others to the betting ring and particulary if she got any kicbacks for doing such then she is in big do do. But then I think she should have been sentenced years ago for those Police Academy movies.

  25. Doh!

Why does my suspicious brain always go the conspiracy route?

The Yanks timing on this is as bad as it could possibly be for Canuks in Turin.

I wonder what the odds are now on Canuks vs Yanks for gold.

  26. In the end, it’s all about hockey isn’t it? First it was Yoko Janet when she made Wayner move away from Hadmonchuk, now it’s Winnie Janet. I predict that all blame will deflected off WG’s stick and Tick Tocket will take the penalty time. After all, that’s the Canadian way, isn’t it? Just like Chretien and Martin and cronies. They won’t spend any time “inside”. They will quietly retire to the country to spend their days painting landscapes. Hockey is the opiate of the Canadian people.

  27. I’m going to repeat what I posted on Bourque ’cause I just want to know: WHAT? Wayne lied? He looked into the camera and told a WHOPPER? Maybe he should be a politician instead.
