Monte Solberg is shutting down his blog to – get this – work on his Citizenship and Immigration portfolio. And they said they’d be different than the Liberals. Well, the Liberals didn’t blog as cabinet ministers, and now Solberg isn’t blogging as a cabinet minister, I feel so betrayed.

I’ve now discarded the fifth plan I drew up to lure/kidnap Monte to California. Our shortage of politicians who can do perspective and humor has reached critical and I was hoping to distill out some kind of hyper smart achingly funny pheromones from Monte. Sort of like dabbing some charisma behind your ears.
The problem has arisen when one of my black op consultants pointed out that, like some wines, he might not travel very well. Ironic, self deprecation pretty much vanished here when Bob Newhart quit doing stand up.
So, he is safe and I’m sure you’ll be relieved to hear that. I will miss his blog.

Sometime mid-election campaign, when things weren’t looking so good for the CPC, I read through the Kyoto agreement, dug up some historical and projected emissions data, and figured out that if Alberta were to separate, Canada would actually end up in a situation where they would (easily) meet all of there targets and be able to sell credits.
It would be a win-win situation for Alberta/Canada. Alberta could dump Kyoto, and Canada could meet their targets and crow about how much better than the US they were. Soccer moms everywhere could continue driving SUV’s and not feel guilty about polluting
I’m not a big fan of legislating the ideas that university professors espouse. “Encouraging Intellectual Diversity” sounds like something you’d expect to hear from the Ministry of Truth.
We already have a technique for spreading intellectual diversity, its called debate. I suppose if you can’t win a debate you legislate.
I’ll miss Monte. His blog was always very entertaining. And whatever your politics, BlogBoy for the Liberals had me visibly shaking with laughter and is also missed. The Liberals took his blog down but his story about missing the Prime Minister’s motorcade in South America was hilarious.

Who is buying credits? The only people I hear talking about buying and selling credits nowadays are Kyoto’s opponents.
Just wait a few decades for your Alberta seperation. The writing may very well be on the wall for nation states in the decades ahead. In which case we may see a lot of regions making clean and easy breaks. And you never know you might even see the Golden Horseshoe (which is also fed up with subsidizing the rest of the country) break away as well.

According to the UNFCC website (because the text of the Kyoto Protocol bores me to tears):
“Under emissions trading, an Annex I Party may transfer some of the emissions under its assigned amount, known as assigned amount units (AAUs), to another Annex I Party that finds it relatively more difficult to meet its emissions target. It may also transfer CERs, ERUs or RMUs that it has acquired through the CDM, joint implementation or sink activities in the same way. In order to address the concern that some countries could �over-sell� and then be unable to meet their own targets, the Protocol rulebook requires Annex I Parties to hold a minimum level of AAUs, CERs, ERUs and/or RMUs in a commitment period reserve that cannot be traded.”
This is a legitimate method for member countries to meet their targets. I don’t think that it’s accurate to say that only “Kyoto’s opponents” are talking about it.

gearman- I agree the exchange of credits was part of the original idea behind Kyoto but its not being taken up by anyone. That was the point I was trying to make.
It’s unfortunate that the idea got put forward at all as its fueled a lot of skepticism about global warming and alternative energy in general.

Our economic system is unsustainable by its very nature. The only response to climate chaos and peak oil is major social change
There is no meaningful response to climate change without massive social change. A cap on this and a quota on the other won’t do it. Tinker at the edges as we may, we cannot sustain earth’s life-support systems within the present economic system.
Capitalism is not sustainable by its very nature. It is predicated on infinitely expanding markets, faster consumption and bigger production in a finite planet. And yet this ideological model remains the central organising principle of our lives, and as long as it continues to be so it will automatically undo (with its invisible hand) every single green initiative anybody cares to come up with.

Almost 1,000 Danish websites have been defaced by Islamic hackers protesting about controversial cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad.
The attacks typically replace home pages with pro-Islam messages and condemn the publication of the images.
Hack attack monitoring group Zone-H said the defacements were done both by hacker groups and individuals.
Zone-H said some hackers left moderate messages but many called for a violent response to the cartoons’ publication.
Fast response
“We have never seen so many defacements that are politically targeted in such a short time,” said Roberto Preatoni, founder and administrator of Zone-H.
“What is extraordinary for this Danish case is the speed in which the community united,” he added.
Mr Preatoni said monitoring of hacker chat channels revealed that hackers and groups in different Islamic nations had banded together to make the protests more effective. Attacks were known to have come from groups in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Indonesia.
Many of the groups involved in the attacks were well known, said Mr Preatoni, but some new ones had emerged as the attacks unfolded.
There was even evidence that the protests had brought one older hacker out of retirement just to make his feelings known. >>> more

I’m a lefty but the lion share technologies are being created by start ups not government. Communist countries don’t have a good track record of developing green technologies.
Entrepeneurs have given us a variety of new engine designs, new wind technologies, new solar technologies, etc. etc. Geuss what the UK government’s big idea is, cut down rainforests to plant palm oil plantations for biofuel.
Government should just provide incentives, help with infrastructure and stay out of the way. Check out Norway and Finland.
