Two readers have emailed me about this;

“I just heard an audio clip on cfra on the drive home that enraged me.
At an all candidates meeting in Refrew, ON. (“up the valley” from Ottawa) last night, a WW2 vet (one Mr. Tomkins) stood up and asked the Liberal candidate, Don Lindsay, what plans the Liberals had to compensate handgun owners for seizing their private property. Instead of answering the question immediately, Lindsay started by spouting Martins favorite line: “The United States is our neighbour. This is Canada. And if you want to live that lifestyle, perhaps you better move there”. The crowd instantly became very vocal and started shoting at Lindsay. Imagine the nerve, the GALL of this man to TELL A WW2 VET to MOVE TO THE US!
I was FURIOUS! And I still am…

  5. They pulled the same stunt n 2000 at an all-candidates debate, although not with a vet. The Liberal (forget his name) was asked about the gun registry (not popular in a rural riding) and said something arrogant about gun owners, got boos and hisses, and lost the election to Cheryl Gallant.
    they really need to lose badly…

  8. I am proud to say that I grew up in the riding of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. I know for a fact that the people living there are a proud and honest folk, not easily misled by the messaging of Mother Government.
    It wasn’t always this way…this riding was proudly represented by Liberal Len Hopkins, who served the riding for 30 years. Why? Because he knew his constituents and their values. As soon as he retired and his Liberal nomination was taken over by Hec Cloutier, previously an independent who took over purely in a sense of opportunism, their values were compromised. Cloutier labelled opponents to the gun registry (of which there were MANY in that riding) as rednecks, so the electorate immediately took the opportunity to elect the Alliance candidate in 2000 (Cheryl Gallant, one of only two Alliance members from Ontario in that election who still represents the riding to this day and will likely continue to do so).
    This instance only serves to show that the Liberals continue to essentially misunderstand the values of voters outside of Toronto/Vancouver/Montreal and would attempt to impose their values on them, while labelling those who would not subscribe to such dictated values as rednecks who lie outside of the Canadian mainstream.
    Why am I telling you this? I want the voters in the West to understand that not everyone in Ontario is brainwashed by the Liberal guilt that would dictate who are true Canadians and who aren’t. I assure you that the voters in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, and many others in our province, understand that Canadian values are defined by the people and not the politicians.

  9. I can see the level of respect and thanks that mr don lindsay has for the men and women who protected this precious right of ours. I very much doubt that mr lindsay has the same “jam” that Mr. Tomkins and so many others had/have. The sheer nerve of that pantywaist! I think perhaps I’m being too generous with even that description!!!

But to the Liberals, our vets are considered the past, an almost shameful time in our history when we PICKED UP RIFLES AND KILLED PEOPLE in the name of freedom. Now, we have the UN, so we can castrate the military and provide peacekeeping services that make us proud. Won’t hear about this in the MSM.

  15. My father is a WWII vet, inlisted the RCN in 1939 and got home in 1946. His ship was credited with sinking two german sub’s and they where rammed by a german sub on one convey. To think he spent six years of his life, to defending a piece of garbage like Don Lindsay and what he stands for, just piss’s me off. God, I hope the MSM was there to catch this one, but I have my doubts that it will air, any where but here in cyber space.

  18. I love how Liberals describe owning firearms as a “lifestyle”. Sadly it isn’t a state sanctioned one like Homosexuality or Polygamy and therefore to a Liberal this is considered to be “deviant”. Well speaking as a persecuted firearms collector who took Don Lindsay’s advice back in 1999 and moved to the States – at least the Canadian government can no longer confiscate my legally owned and responsibly used property. As I like to tell my American friends and colleagues “I didn’t leave Canada – Canada left me.”
    There are licenses and waiting periods and restrictions galore just like in Canada. So really the “lifestyle” is quite similar. The difference is that down here, people who misuse guns get locked up for a long time or are executed after the due process of law. But going after law abiding gun owners is an easy way to a Liberal politician to flaunt their moral superiority as gangs in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver blow each other away with all the finesse of the Battle of the Somme. And when the perps are caught – 40 years of Liberal jurisprudence guarantee that it will be “catch and release” time for these poor misunderstood victims. Perhaps they needed more community centers or maybe they needed a hot lunch at school…
    Well good luck on Monday. But like so many other things in Canada, its going to take a lot more than five years of a Conservative government to undo the damage that the Liberals have wrought.

  19. At our little Elks meeting the other night under new business was a letter from this putrid govt,s gun registry asking about our members guns and how many there was. This is a facist govt. these stinking liberals have the nerve to ask a question like this as if here in Alberta we will rat our neighbors to these leninists. Think long and hard Toronto when you vote on monday. 9 to 12 billion leave Alberta for the east every year just stop and think that every pickup we use in the oilpatch, every length of pipe, every tractor we use on our farms every part we use comes from the east we are good people here in Alberta and Sask even if that stinking martin and his moronic friend( basil, who would name their boy basil) says otherwise. You vote for these stinking thieves again and the separation will be from the west and Quebec

    Unfortunately, yes. This is the same line of thinking that kept PMPM from ever attending the Police Officers’ Memorial Service on Parliament Hill, that led the Liberal war room to believe that a picture of Harper and Duceppe from the Holocaust Memorial would be appropriate in an attack ad campaign, and forced veterans into a hunger strike on the Hill to attempt to get an adequate level of pension benefits so they could continue to live. Frankly, Paul Martin and the members of his generation in the Liberal caucus wish the veterans and others who continue to protect this country would just go away so they wouldn’t have to be shamed into acknowledging them.

  25. I am in S-W Ontario and believe me, everyone i know is voting PCP. However, i still am worried about Toronto…if they would stop and think for a few minutes they would realize it is in their best interests to have someone from the city with a nice cabinet job and some clout….NDP and Lieberals will get them nothing after jan 23rd.

  26. Does this really surprise anyone? Liberal attitude has been becoming more “holier than thou” for decades. It is only now that the mask is being dropped to expose the TRUE face of intolerance, bigotry & hatred. Keep in mind that a large portion of these “intelligent representatives of Canadian citizenry” have been sitting on the throne of power FOR 12 YEARS! They honestly believe that they are better then the majority of Canadians and KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR CANADA. Take a bit of time to think back on the last 12 YEARS and reflect on whether the electorate has been treated with the respect OWED TO US BY THE GOVERNMENT, or with contempt as you would a group of irresponsible hooligans? It is about time Canadians woke up to reality and began telling our leaders to not take us for granted and to treat us, and the positions they hold, with respect.

  27. This riding includes Camp Petawawa a majpr Cdn Army base. I served there a long time ago . . . god how I miss the snad of Mattawa Plain & Trig Point golf.

    There is nothing we shouldn’t do for our vets who snuffed out the facist menace of Hitler.     I am always awed by the Canadian cemeteries in France an Belgium and Holland.
    Makes me think when the Liberals created the faux ceremony for Pierre Trudeau’s funeral they accepted his wish to have the brutal dictator Fidel Castor as a pallbearer for a “Canadian’, who sat out the war and the greatest moral challenge of his generation, in the bars and cafes of Montreal whiel he discussed Marxist philosphy.
    His imprint on the Liberal Party is obviously in good repair as shown by this dufus.

The liberal US media makes us believe that Canadians hate America now because we are run by “evil” republicans and also persuades us to believe all Canadians are left wing liberals.     Mr. Martin, you seem to be advocating full and free access to abortion? Would you put no conditions on abortion and allow even late term procedures?
    How does he respond to that question? Would he say he DOES favour some forms of abortion?

My dad was a veteran, my grandfather , a Great War veteran, was one of the founders of the Royal Canadian Legion. They were both gun owners. They both must be restless in their graves.   47. And all the MSM can talk about is abortion! The minute possibility (about the same as a pro-life Liberal) that “muzzled” Cheryl Gallant would introduce a private member’s bill on abortion should have quieted this story.
    During this campaign:
    -Our military has been insulted over and over again
    -fear-mongering and attacks reached a new low
    -Americans were attacked continuously
    -Martin/Buzz bashed Alberta
    -Our soldiers took on a proud and dangerous leading role in Afghanistan
    -the Libs attempted to repossess and trademark “Canadian values”
    If Martin and all the slimy dirty tricks give him a tiny minority on Monday night, where will we be as a country? Talk about a threat to national unity!
    I will be outraged. Please Canada, let’s clean up government!

  48. Hey! I also grew up in the Upper Ottawa Valley inside what is now Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. Living in the west for some time I have been proud to tell people that although I indeed come from Ontario, I come from the only part of Ontario to elect Alliance MPs. When I told people that gun ownership was widespread there and played a significant role in elections, some people had a hard time believing me. What the article and Reluctant Ninja didn’t mention is that Cheryl Gallant got about 60% of the vote last time and is probably going to do better this time. She might have the safest Conservative seat in Ontario. Don Lindsay, who I understand is a recent migrant to the riding, committed a major Liberal Party political gaffe by saying what he actually believes.

  49. In last night’s Calgary SW forum the Liberal Candidate was decent, but the organizer had an anger problem. After the forum she approached us to talk, and at some point I tried to object to misleading ads on the Liberals website.
    She wouldn’t let me make my point, and continued yelling about how Fundy Christians are hateful and brainwashed, Stephen Harper will eliminate our social programs, and how you can’t argue with Conservatives. Not when you are yelling and won’t let the other person speak!
    She couldn’t tell me how she knew of the conservatives plan, but deep down she knew our country was in trouble. She was not convinced by the fact I worked with the former co-chair of the policy comittee, nor that I was an aboriginal who grew up the son of a single mom on welfare.
    You just can’t argue with people who calmly resort to the facts.
