  6. I have noted among several of families I know that many of the high school girls soon to graduate and those in university have this dream to have a cushy job in elementary schools. Cushy because how much do you have to know to teach those so young? The truely skilled and effective teacher have the technique to get through to the kids, that technique is the secret of success. The ones seeking that cushy job are not likely to work hard to develope that effective technique.

  7. Meanwhile, the Captain, who graduated with an economics degree, cannot actually find paid work as an economist. But he parrots the standard SDA narrative, and he’s also mean-spirited, which are apparently enough to make him a resident expert on economics and career counselling around these parts.
    By the way, the list of 20-something bloggers includes someone based in Malaysia, and another based in Indian. If you’re going to spend your personal time putting together a blog post that serves no higher purpose than to rally your anonymous online pals together so that you all can mock a bunch of idealistic young American college students behind their backs, at least get your targets right.

  8. Not everyone has the aptitude to be in STEM fields. All sorts of people that are otherwise useless can be beneficial to have around from time to time. Like economists. For example.

  9. Dear Lord forgive me but I’m agreeing with Davenport. The great Captain has wasted time and bandwidth writing in his blog that others have blogs that do not meet his exacting standards in writing. Give me a break please, these folks may not be rocket scientists but they don’t claim to be. That is the joy of the internet. In parts of the world anyone is free to create a blog. They are also free to ridicule others but then again this is more a reflection of the person ridiculing than the target. Sad Captain, sad.

  12. My little whiz kid is in that boat. I damn near died when she came home and announced she had dumped the sciences for fine arts. Then she announced she was gay. I didn’t get up again after taking that pie in the face.
    Of course I was the only one in the family with a problem with her life decisions, but I was told I was an ignoramus and that my opinion was worthless and to please shut the hell up. We have to love and support our children in everything they do, right? Right???
    Now my creative daughter is slinging coffee at Starbucks, her artsy-fartsy ‘life partner’ is bagging groceries – and it’s all Steven Harper’s fault – him and those eeeeevil bankers.
    I remain an ignoramus but a silent one who laughs to himself quietly from time to time. What else are you gonna do?

  14. And Big Bad Jim, your daughter’s sexual orientation has exactly what to do with her economic circumstances? I can’t argue on the science vs. arts thing though. Nope, definitely can’t argue there.

  16. Well Wet One, suffice it to say that I though I am a politically incorrect ignoramus – I know enough about when to keep silent.
    Rest assured I will act as shocked and outraged when certain economic and social realities kick my daughter squarely in the butt.
    I am sure that the proliferation of men that wear tutus and women with mustaches in the Fine Arts programs is purely coincidental too.

  23. I’m with Texaas Canuck on this one. Captain Capitalism may be great with economics, but when it comes to understanding humanity and the freedoms we have in our society to just be ourselves, he’s out of his league. These people aren’t Occupiers, complainers nor trying to drag us anywhere. They’re just expressing themselves on-line for friends and family. Leave them alone.
    But first, the Captain could take a few lessons from them on web design.

  24. My take on this isn’t that anyone really thinks that most of the silly people with the silly websites ought to be taking engineering or biochemistry. I doubt most of them could handle it. It’s really more that the degrees they are taking are costing them time and money and are utterly worthless. Far too many people go to university. It’s a scam, really. And I’ll spare you my rant about teachers (there are too many of them, they are stupid and uneducated, you can’t fire them, why are they all women?, they’re a pack of commies etc.).
    Over the summer I wasted some time hanging out on a lefty blog. I wound up begging one of the girls to stop with her degree in Women’s Studies. Not only useless, but unspeakably boring. But no, she’s going to be a lawyer specializing in… women, I guess. After all, there’s such a dearth of lawyers. Ca-ching.

  25. Not all. My daughter is pursuing her PhD in a STEM discipline. Her peers are getting jobs. She’s getting paid to go to school and do research.
    That makes her part of the 1 percent. Well, somebody’s got to pay for all the drones we’re churning out.
